Fantastic West Ham, I am 56 years old now, this was the Hammers last major trophy, I live in hope that soon or later we can get another one. this win against Arsenal was something to celebrate!
I can remember watching this game live at 3am in the morning on TV. I grew up in New Zealand, I used to get up every year to watch the FA cup final. I thought that West Ham's early goal would be cancelled out, and Willie Young's outrageous tackle would have been a red card if the game had been played today.
You did better than my dad so. Rte, state broadcaster in Ireland were on strike at the time so he drove up into local mountain to here bbc radio coverage. Really was different times. Fantastic story though. Especially as a west ham fan, obviously don't remember 1980, but I remember 2006 final like it was yesterday
The foul which occured on 3:07 caused a lot of uproar and backlash amongst fans and league officials and this in turn prompted footballs law makers, the IFAB to make such fouls a red card offence.
Yeah, but to be honest that was just Brian being Brian. Put a TV camera infront of him and he'd give them something to splash across the back pages. I well remember having a discussion with my older brother and sister about Willie Young's foul and what I regarded as being more important. Allen was considered old enough to play in a Cup Final but not old enough to hold a Driving Licence or get laid. I'm a couple of months older than Paul and that was the sort of thing that troubled my mind at that age. Paul, of course, went on and won an FA Cup Winners Medal, whilst I had a lot of success and excitement as a trolley patrol man at Asda's big car-park.
Just heard Stuart Pearce say scoring that early was worse for him as it meant you had the biggest part of the match to hold on to that lead. Being a Saints fan, FA Cup day has always been a day supporting the underdog and I can well remember the tension in the room back in 1980, willing the Hammers to go on and score again. So when that tackle reappeared before my eyes some 39 years later, I was immediately remembering the kid jumping from his seat and screaming at the injustice along with my Dad.
My dad and his brother were West Ham fanatics they were at the final⚒ that day! West Ham were by far the better team and it was a shame Paul Allen aged 17 didn't score when he was clinically fouled when through on goal. What fantastic supporters they have and still do to this day COYI ⚒
There were 4 Irish players for Arsenal that day: Stapleton, Brady, O'Leary from the Republic of Ireland, and Pat Jennings from Northern Ireland. Those were the days
I remember watching this, my youngest brother was born that year, screaming his head off has babies do. My other brother was there watching it, he was born in 1975 and I was born in 1964. If you are a hammers fan you will know how significant those years are.
I was there I was with my little brother the atmosphere was incredible! It seemed like west ham had a twelfth player! Shame young Paul Allen didn’t score would’ve been amazing!!!! This was the beginning of a great few years for the HAMMERS
I'm not a West Ham or Arsenal fan, but for some reason I look back upon 1980 as possibly the greatest of all years. I cannot quite remember what it was or why I have often thought that. Maybe it was the music, or the weather... or maybe I achieved more successes that year than failures. I was 18 so perhaps it was the prospect of having a bright future to look forward too. I don't know! But if I were granted one wish to revisit any year at all, I would always ask for 1980.
I was 8 years old at the time and really nervous as the minutes ticked by. Then I heard something I’d never heard before, that was my mum swearing 🤬 as Willie Young brought down Paul Allen. I tell you now it would of made a navvy blush! 🤣🤣🤣
Congratulations to West Ham United for beating us to win the final of the 1980 FA Cup!!!Anyway,Arsenal for life and Arsenal till I die!!!Forever Arsenal and Come On You Gunners!!! :-D
Magisk øyeblikk i 1980 som underdogs mot Gunners. Denne sesongen har jeg store forhåpninger til en ny cup - finale, veldig gjerne med Gunners på andre side av banen. :-)
I was there that historic day situated just under the Royal Box to almost shake hands with Billy Bonds when he held the cup aloft! My voice had almost gone, but I was proud to be a member of "Johnny Lyall's claret n' blue army!" Great day against the Woolwich boys! John was a "super servant" for the Irons over 34 years! Trevor, by the way, was that a header or did it catch your forehead on the way in?
when I saw stuart pearson on the team sheet I knew west ham would win he was a big game player always turned it on if it was a big game. the FA CUP in 1980 was a big game.

Because back in those days quite a few people still had black and white televisions . if arsenal wore their red and white jerseys and west ham wore their claret and blue jerseys in black and white tv both sides would look similar.
I was at the match - supporting West Ham but near to the Arsenal fans who had some irritating chant which they repeated over and over. Although I was close to the goal where Brooking scored, from my angle it looked like Pearson was the scorer, so I forgive the cameramen their similar confusion. I well remember McQueen's cynical professional foul, which in those days was typically not dealt with adequately. Looking at the replay, it's odds on that Allen would have passed to (I think) Cross outside him, rather than shoot himself. Cross could have walked the ball in once Jennings was out of the equation.
And rightfully so it was made a red card. By committing a foul against someone who has a clear and fairly earned chance at goal contravenes all common law fair play and directly attacks that players right to happiness. The latter is the reason why its a sending off.
We should have won an Fa Cup and Cup Winners Cup double in 1980 but the team was knackered, they had to play Liverpool in a replay 3 fuckin times and had 2 finals in 5 days unlucky Gunners
A sunderland fan at school said, if West Ham beat Arsernal he would kiss my shoes, so convinced West Ham could not win. On the Monday he had to kiss my shoes.
Incredible. I was only a kid then . These highlights bring back memories.

I was 14 years old and I remember being happy West Ham won the cup. Although I am a Wolves supporter.!!!!
The Arsenal played seventy games that season and deserved so much more. Two finals in 5 days, both lost. They were knackered with a small squad. 😢
kinky afro did it for them, ask the culprits. Not a clippers in sight.
43 years on, and it still brings a little tear to my eye, as does the euro conference trophy won this year..
Up The Hammers ⚒⚒
I was 14 and the best day ever
But I went to Prague in June and that usurped 1980 just unbelieveble

I was ten when this was played and that foul is my main memory of it! Everyone was SCANDALISED!
makes my spine tingle even though West Ham are my second team.
RIP Motty, him and Brooking became a good combo on the commentary
I remember Brian Clough slagging off Brooking before the match. Did you enjoy that humble pie Brian? (RIP by the way, great man).

That 2:45 save tho
Great tackle by Young there.
Remembered the FA Cup Final 1980 which I was 16 years old now 59 years old nobody saw this coming that West Ham shock Arsenal with a 1-0 victory.
Both channels failed to catch Brooking celebrating, shameful.
The first FA Cup final I watched live on TV. If I'm right - this was Liam Brady's last match for Arsenal too.
No he played the following Wednesday against Valencia in the European cup winners cup final and the following 2 league matches I believe John
3:30 yellow card? 😅
they have since changed the law so that would be a straight red.

HeCDwas area great goalie.. but only 3rd or 4th choice England goalie! We had some greats back then..
Nothing like a 1970s Cup Final on a sunny day.
Loved West Hams top.
I love the way Willie Young apologizes to the referee and Paul Allen after one of the most cynical fouls I have ever seen.
About two years later the straight red was introduced for the professional foul. I wonder why!
agreed, i loved the way stalin apologized for murdering 20 million too. i still remmeber the UN holding up the yellow card.

How did Phil Parkes even hold on to that free kick.
