The SECRET to TRANSFORMING your voice: The power of Vocal Empathy

  • Now, I know most of y'all wanted a "how to sing like video" from me breaking down how to get the sound of a particular singer, but I made this one first because it's my channel and I do what I want to.
    Jk, I made this one because it was the easiest to do without a lot of preplanning or prep-work.
    I had a lot of fun making this video, and i hope y'all enjoy it. The next video will be an analysis of CVT (complete vocal technique), before I move onto any singer breakdown videos as I want to establish a framework for analyzing their singing!
    Thanks for watching, please drop a comment letting me know your thoughts on the concept!

    Years ago I was listening to the great Dr. John. I began to imagine what he must have been feeling like in that moment. Not just emotionally but physically as well. Like what is his voice telling me about his body and movements. I started to sing while maintaining this connection. My voice transformed. From the next room my then girlfriend exclaimed "What the f@ck are you doing?! You sound exactly like Dr. John!"
    Thanks for giving a term to that experience!

    Hey Greg! This is very encouraging to me because recently that’s been my process and I’ve also had the most progressive experience. I don’t sing in front of people anymore, and I don’t do well if I do. I’m noticing improvements of myself through recordings. I can’t show people what I mean when I say I’m mimicking someone’s singing voice. Glad to see you’re still making videos!

    Wow, very interesting - I can definitely relate to many of these experiences - where I would listen to singers and my voice suddenly opens up - or this one time where I was practicing and was frustrated - and kind of forced myself to change moods and be more positive and it helped a lot.
    However, I sadly forgot about that day - crazy to think this is an actual concept that other people experience, great entertaining / informative / unique video - i'll keep this in mind in future practices. Great channel you've established man.

    This is a good video. While it is true that vocal empathy can help in a live performance (since you only get one shot to get it right), going over the top with it while trying to mimic someone else can seriously injure your voice. Better to get your technique down, and at all volumes and sound colors- not always loud or always soft, and always with complete control.
    Last night I used a combination of these to shout the F4's in "Blind" by Korn. No faking, this time. Full-out SHOUTING. It's been years since being able to do that. Did Falling Away From Me an hour later at another place and nailed a G4!
    Some of that was vocal empathy, but mechanically, it was mostly a matter of warming up with a light connection on a hum with a crazy high larynx. This reset the coordination to one of non-breathiness without strain or constriction. Then, when actually singing, high pitches felt lower, and it was possible to add growl. What gave it energy, though, was just thinking about the first time hearing it, and the feelings it invoked. It's been almost 20 years since being able to sing this song with guts. Oh man, what a catharsis.

    • @into.the.wood.chipper.
      @into.the.wood.chipper. 5 років тому

      @@StudioWestLessons I had the larynx idea in a little too high of a position held to be useful, but warming up in falsetto is no joke, especially if you are going to do a lot of belting. What really doesn't last is pushing chest voice up and up. Every singer who does that eventually loses their high range. You're still young, so as a middle aged man of experience, heed this advice: never let your falsetto weaken. As you reach your 30's and beyond, that will be the first thing to go. Falsetto is the elasticity of your vocal folds and aging sees a reduced elasticity in them. You've probably noticed that when you have a cold or are hoarse, your falsetto is gone. Now, imagine your voice being hoarse every day! That's what abusing the chest voice and refusing to change to a lighter gear when the voice asks for it will eventually do. The male falsetto is a remnant of the child voice we had before puberty. It only makes sense to strengthen that if you want any stable upper range whatsoever.

      Complete copy paste scam basically, despite knowing that it was risky since the teacher didn't have any public singing or students to be showcased - I still went for it since I was desperate to learn and improve. (When I was younger and more foolish)
      Worst investment I made, it's literally just a bunch of SLS exercises with basic explanations - you're better off taking advice from good youtube vocal teachers imo. Other programs might be worth it, but SSM in my opinion is definitely a waste of money and time.
      More like Superior waste of money.

    A friend of mine is in the expert of singing. Before a song, he puts himself in the mood of a song. If it is a sad song, he thinks of a challenging situation he has experienced and keeps this attitude throughout the song. I would call acting when you fake emotion. But when you infuse your real emotions into a song, it is no longer acting. I may be wrong. :)

    Is it true that true vibrato can be obtained only through compression and compression can be obtained by an emotional state? Interest, caring, curiosity about the subject you’re singing about can also create that compression. I’m thinking that if you did not care about what you’re singing, you would get no compression at all, and the singing would not be very good.

    • @denismorissette7318
      @denismorissette7318 2 роки тому

      @@StudioWestLessons What I understand of compression is when the air pressure is higher than when you’re on a chair reading a book when there is a minimal pressure because there is no reason to have any more. Practically, compression increases as you tighten more and more your abs. More air is going through the mouth. I’ll come back to you later. Thanks!
