Abbott would've been BOTH dying in the "present" and he could STILL be 3000 years in the future because of the heptapods non-linear time. Although I'm not sure how you could die and still be alive... So it's probably Costello who's the one that's alive in 3000 years. Although Costello says he's in the "death process" not that he's ACTUALLY dead. Heptapods might never die because of their non-linear time, they just enter a "death process". So of course they'd come to save themselves, it costs them literally nothing.
I don't think that's how it works. I think the "death process" meant he was injured and dying- in which case, he definitely understood that going on the mission to bring their language to humanity was a one way ticket. Their "non linear lives" don't make them immortal, it lets them see every moment of THEIR lives. Not everyone elses- just their own circle of experiences.
Knowing her daughter would be with her for such a short amount of time.... and knowing how painfully she would lose her . . . everyday with that child would be a countdown to her last day... literally knowing the day it would happen... it would be emotionally devastating on a daily basis.
But you'd also know every moment of joy. Once you have a non-linear view of time (which knowing the heptapod language creates), you would see everything all at once, and your grief would be tempered with joy (and vice versa).
@@kojiromusashi13 Agreed, I think we can't fully understand how she goes through with it because we can't perceive how she experiences time, changing her perception of time and memories would likely change how you process grief and anger
Everyone talks about Louise and how she feels, but honestly the one i feel bad for is the daughter: she was brought into this world, *knowingly,* by a parent who 100% knew, beyond any doubt, that they would die a horrible, slow death due to unstoppable illness. A parent who's first instinct should be to want to protect their child from any pain. No wonder she said she hated Louise. Now Hannah's own father cant look at her the same or talk to her the same, she's almost lost her dad in a sense since he is separating himself in his pre-grief. To me personally, Its beyond selfish to bring a life into this world that you know will die early and horrific for certain, just so *you* can have your happy memories, while the child knows pain and suffering, as well as her dad being unable to look at her the same, and then death. If I knew before birth that my son would suffer due to an illness, I absolutely wouldn't have brought him into this world just to suffer.
It's interesting watching reactions to this film and how everyone comes to the realization that her daughter's story wasn't a flashback at different times. For me it was when she says "who is this child" inside the ship. It hit me like a lightening bolt - omg this hasn't happened yet. Those aren't flashbacks... they are visions of her future. It feels like every reactor has that epiphany at different parts of the film. It's so interesting how it hits and when for each person.

That was pretty much the filmmakers slapping you in the face with it. They're like "If you haven't figured it out by now... Here!". Then they give you the "who is this girl" and you're like "WHAM! IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW!". I actually figured it out when her daughter was making the little clay heptapods. I was like "how in the fuck is she making heptapods if this is a flashback?"... There are a bunch of other clues to figure it out on a rewatch. Arrival really is an incredible movie with how rewatchable it is.
It's comparable to The Sixth Sense. There's a lot of clues along the way leading up to a big reveal towards the end where most people learn the truth. Some people pick up on it early... but no matter when you figure it out, everyone can go back and rewatch it with new eyes a second time and have a deeper appreciation for how it was all put together.

@@PowerDiva The film is a hermeneutic circle. Just as Louise sees new visions of her future, she expands her circle, gaining new insight. The best example of this is when she talks to Shang. Immediately before talking to Shang she goes to the future where she literally WROTE THE BOOK on the heptapod language. That gives her insight into her entire life at the outermost circle. So she immediately knows she has to call Shang, and how to do it. Since she's living in non-linear time by that point like the heptapods, she's actually experiencing BOTH THINGS at THE SAME TIME. After Louise reads her own book in the future she's now fully living in non-linear time. There is no longer a "past" or "future" for her.
One of my fave movies ever. It is such a heart-wrenching story. The score, the writing, the acting, the cinematography, the directing, every thing was absolutely perfect. Im so glad y'all watched this.
Language defines our world. Literally. Even our conception of time is heavily influenced by our language. English-speakers for instance do not really think about what it means to have three tenses that situates us in time; by that same token, they often do not realize that not every language have the same relationship to time as english and the romance languages. Naturally some liberties were taken with this movie, but the core thesis remains the same: language and communication do more than transmit information. They are the structures of our thoughts and by extension, what we are and are not capable of conceiving. And Louise, the linguist, is the most aware of this fact. And I would like to point out that it's a very rare alien first contact story that is resolved through communication. More than that, the female lead isn't forced to adopt a male-coded role based on aggression and fighting, but is instead playing to her unique strengths. I mean I love Sigourney Weaver in Alien, but how many similar movies do you know where a female lead doesn't resolve the conflict through large amounts of explosives? Louise shows that female leads can be more than a gender-bent male lead. She's contemplative and decisive, compassionate and firm, and best of all, proof that being willing to talk things through is a strength.
Excellently written! I'm Finnish, but I speak two other languages. Each language has a unique way of describing the reality. For example in Finnish all objects "are". In Dutch objects either sit, lay or stand. It gives the object a more of an active substance. In Finnish it's an existential substance.
I love this film for being "true" science fiction. There's the layer that deals with the fantastical - spaceships, aliens, seeing the future - and another layer that deals with universal human things - how we communicate, how language shapes our worldview, how we find joy in experiencing life even though we know that death is inevitable. An amazing experience, and it's all held together by a deeply human and relatable character whose choices are beautiful and noble and heartbreaking. Combine that with the acting and the music and it's an instant winner.
Better to have loved and lost, than to have never loved at all ❤ This movie is incredibly heartbreaking and the use of the song “On the Nature of Daylight” as the theme is so gut wrenching. I don’t know if you recognised it but it’s also used in the Bill and Frank episode of TLOU. It makes me cry in any movie/tv show it’s used in 😢

I watched this years ago, and I loved it. But it was recently, through several more viewings, that I came to think that maybe the reason for her to give in at the end (and have her child all the same) is that she understood that having Hannah will give her the tools to associate and crack the alien code.

I think it's more that she loves her child SO MUCH she HAS to have her. Even if she dies, she has like 14 great years or whatever with her, and once she has the heptapod language she can relive that as many times as she wants. Once she has the heptapod language she is living in non-linear time. So time to some degree "doesn't exist" for Louise because there is no longer a "past" or a "future". If she never has Hannah then she is completely erased from Louise's timeline. Ian never got full control of the heptapod language, so Hannah would always be that sick girl in the hospital for him. That's why he told Louise she "made a mistake", because he simply couldn't understand her choice since he was still living in linear time.
So glad you watched this film! It's one of my all-time favorites. It's just so beautiful and thought-provoking. This is the way I interpret the movie (and I could be wrong, for sure) - but some physicists believe that time is just one HUGE block and all of time exists in this block and EVERYTHING has already happened. WE just experience it linearly. The aliens don't exactly time travel (I mean, yes and no) - they just experience time as it is in this movie and they know the past and the future (because it already exists and in effect, can't really be changed because of this). They experience time non-linearly. Amy's character was experiencing time non-linearly from the beginning of the movie, seeing her future daughter, but not really understanding her "visions". I could go on about free will (or the lack of) and determinism, but it's getting above my pay grade! Glad you loved it. ❤
One of my all-time favorite films. It ALWAYS affects me... even after I KNOW what's going to happen. (Irony!) The title "ARRIVAL" can apply as much to Hannah's imminent arrival as much as the aliens. I also think that Louise, a true hero, probably had her biology changed enough to pass down that "rare disease" to Hannah... She was the only one who was literally inside the alien's atmosphere, so that had to affect her in some way. It's such a beautiful story filled with tragedy, empathy, and ultimately the triumph of knowledge over fear. Since you loved this one, you've got to check out these BRILLIANT films: "PLEASANTVILLE," "STRANGER THAN FICTION," "CHILDREN OF MEN," "GRAVITY," and "AMELIE"... each one of these films has incredible stories, direction, acting, cinematography, and effects. They are all underrated gems. ...and you will never forget any of them, once you see them. CHEERS!!
the thing about this movie is that they made scifi much more compelling. I'm not opposed to other scifis but Interstellar and Arrival and similar type of movies just elevate the genre
Absolutely amazing film and yeah, she should have won an Oscar for this film... it was the victim of infuriating studio politics. I don't generally recommend films, but I think you'd love Alien just because Sigourney Weaver is incredible.
The brilliant (and pretty damn handsome) director, Denis Villeneuve, plays with our expectations. We assume the loss of Amy Adams' daughter is in the past and it influences how we see her character. At the end Villeneuve shows that Adams' character is richer than many of us can ourselves be for choosing to have a daughter that she knows will die. And the love she and her daughter experience is worth the loss. It's a monumental film in a small, quiet format that simply asks if the ephemeral experience of true love is worth it, knowing that all of us die in the end. And the answer is unequivocally YES! Of course it's worth it.
to be fair, I dont think whats happening is time travel at all, or at least not time travel in the sense most fiction puts it in. For most works of fiction, those who travel through time still experience their personal timeline in linear order, and each moment exerpeinces has a specific place in their timeline because their personal time is linear. for example, in my 20's I traveled back to the Inca empire, and then in my 30's I traveled to spaceland 7570 etc. What Arrival presents is not time travel, what they present is the absence of the construct of linear time. Louis after fully understanding the Heptapod language no longer experience the world, or her own life as before and after, her 20's don't necessarily occur after her teen years or before her 30's. all events of her life are happening and she is experiencing all of them she is aware of all of them. Her life is now the epitome of 'living in the present'
32:09 i was reminded on my last watch about how louise said the language you speak affects how you see the world. these soldiers have been ‘speaking the language’ of aggression, fear and violence through the media they consume, so every interaction with the heptapods is viewed through that lens and that is why they immediately respond with violence. something that i think is especially pertinent right now in our own world. loved your reaction, and laughed out loud at ‘what if they get test anxiety’ over the math problems. can relate!
I love when the movie took ahold of you and you both got emotional ❤ This movie is AMAZING. I bawled my eyes out in the theatre when the end credits rolled
Arrival was such a great movie. If y’all haven’t seen Interstellar, y’all need to watch that. It was my favorite movie until I saw Everything Everywhere All at Once. If y’all haven’t seen it, please buckle up. It is a ride but best to go in with no knowledge of the movie at all. I would suggest interstellar first, then EEAAO.
Ok you have to watch "Alien" and "Aliens"! Sigour ey is Queen in those! Also "Contact" with the incomparable Jodie Foster. I couldn't work out if you'd seen "Life" or not but I'd definitely recommend it because it's bloody terrifying!
Yes, watch it again, and this time for yourself. This is a difficult movie to react to because when you talk you miss important clues. Here is what you might have seen if you didn't have to talk at the same time. By now you realize that Louise never had a child until after the events of the movie. All the flashbacks of her and her daughter were visions of the future child that she would have with Ian. One of the first clues was when a vision shows Hannah and her picture she drew called "Mommy and Daddy talk to animals." If you look at the picture you can see the Daddy with a hazmat suit on and bird in a cage, and "animals" that look something like the aliens. You might chalk that one up to childish imagination. But a stronger clue was the two visions where Hannah is older and asking her mom the word for "a competition where both sides are satisfied." In the first vision we see Louse say "ask your father, the scientist". Then a few minutes later in the real world, that very topic comes up and Ian says "A non-zero sum game" (which you talked over and missed). Then the second vision shows Louise giving that answer, "non zero-sum game" to Hannah. This strongly suggests the vision could not be a memory from the past, since Louse just learned it now. And Ian is a scientists. By now you can start guessing that Hannah will be the child of Louise and Ian. Then the final clue that really cinches it is when we see a vision where Louise explains to Hannah why her father left them. There is no way that could be a memory. It could only be a vision of the future. But there is one more. When Louise goes into the shell alone and talks with Costello, she is "given" another vision of Hannah, and then she says "I don't understand. Who is this child?" All along we were led to believe this was her child that she already had and who died. But if that were the case she would certainly know who that child is. Then when Louise gets back to base camp she has a vision of herself in the future having written the book on the alien language and teaching classes about it. (Side note: It is satisfying to see her class full now, as compared to not many students before.) Finally, she sees the vision of the meeting 18 months in the future where the Chinese general gives her is private number and the message she needs now. You really have to watch this movie with your full attention.
Starship Troopers you’re gonna love it. #toomuch 😅 Alien/Aliens must-see. Event Horizon ! Scary. District 9 : a wild ride. Signs : a good Night Shyamalan. Contact : beautiful with mother Jodie Foster & matthew mcconaughey playing a priest. 😅
And totally forgot the classic the invasion of the body snatchers 56. They are 3 remakes that we know. 1978 is great also. 1993 Bodysnatchers with Meg Tilly. 2007 the not so good Invasion with Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig.
If this was the first time Amy Adams has been on the channel, i think you guys should do a retro watch of Drop Dead Gorgeous for a silly comedy night. So many amazing women in that cast and so funny!
Hi guys. I love you. Enjoy your repoire with one another. You're such a sweet and funny couple. Im hoping for Gen V now that you're caught with the boys. Also if you haven't Annihilation. It's an interesting mix of Sci Fi and Horror ❤
Saw you guys post this the other day, and I had only seen a few images or clips of the film and heard generally good things about it. So I decided to watch it at 1:00 am this morning and greatly enjoyed it. It's very simple, largely inexpensive, but is still a great movie. And the twist at the end of the daughter being from memories of the future was great. And the aliens were just cool. And that comes from the fact we still don't really know what they are even by the end of the film. Their ships just evaporate into thin air, and they're gone forever. I guess they also interact with humans again 3000 years in the future because they need their help, but we never see that. Edit: In regards to science fiction, I also just watched The Creator yesterday, and was also quite blown away by it. In fact, my face wss covered in tears at multiple points throughout the film.
You may make all the assumptions your little hearts desire at the beginning. They’re all proved wrong as we progress through the movie. The ‘flashbacks’ aren’t flashbacks, they’re flashforwards. Her daughter, of course, dies in the future, not in the past. At one point she’s reading the book on communication with aliens in the future so she’ll have a better grip on their communication in the ‘now’. Then there’s the general’s phone number, which she doesn’t have until the general gives it to her at the celebration. Now she can call his number in the ‘now’, having acquired it in the future. Nice Weapon! BINGO!!! “Didn’t they say language is a weapon?” Very good!!!
I feel they let her know future about her impending heartache so she had that choice. She choose to have the heartache so she had her daughter regardless of her death.
This masterpiece is also fun to watch after you've seen it for the first time. It brings a whole new perspective. Arrival and Interstellar are favorites of mine (but this one may win out just a bit above Interstellar for me....both are superbly phenomenal though). 💖
I would recommend Minority Report for Sci-Fi, it's Tom Cruise as a future cop and 00s Colin Farrell as his rival. Also Last Night in Soho is one of my fave horror films of the past while, it has Anna Taylor-Joy in as a gorgeous 60s starlet 💕
They did this movie in the way we not exspected, in our mind alien movie always about horor, scary, jumpscare, gory. But they twist it with Something different. 😅
This is a movie that gets better with a rewatch. “We are so bound by time, by its order…” You realize they basically gave away the game in the opening scene. Amy Adams’ performance gets even better once you know the twist. On the first watch, you feel like something’s wrong with her performance. Once you know _why_ it makes it 10x better l.
Such a great movie! And YES, PLEASE watch Alien (sci-fi horror) and Aliens (sci-fi gory action thriller)! Terminator 1 & 2 are a must as well, if you haven't already. All extended versions. Both are incredible in different ways and I'm sure you'll have a great time (and so will we 😊)! Also, Ex Machina is very interesting and super creepy!
As a dad with a ❤️daughter Hannah’s age who is the brightest star 🌟 in my Sky , this F&CKING DESTROYS ME EVERY TIME!! And you MUST watch Interstelar, it also destroys me but SO epic! (Both these are SO worth a second watch makes so much more sense the second time. )
ahh that was such a good reaction!! loved how gagged y'all were by the twist lol. if you want some more girl-power sci-fi recs, i suggest Annihilation (2018) and Coherence (2013)!!
For the love of all things holy, watch Alien (1979 Theatrical edit) and Aliens (1990 Special Edition). You guys do them, I will pay for Patreon access for those two. Alien is terrifying; Aliens is a stress nightmare.
Hi guys! I'm one minute in to and I'm already subscribed. You guys are so fun to watch! I hope you will watch Interstellar next! Please-oh-please! I would get out my eatin dress! 😆
This is a really good movie. Joined the Live earlier but my connection decided to go out. Any is so good here. As for other sci-fi movies, all the ones you named you should definitely watch, plus Annihilation.
Pretty much all those scifi movies you mentioned are bangers. Since you guys like horror too I'd figure stuff like Alien (and Aliens) and Life would be right up your alley.
My cat died one December morning in 2016 and later that day I went to see this movie to get my mind off of the experience. It was hard for me to enjoy the movie and it's still a little bit tainted for me a bit. But it is a good movie.

You might want to give Andrei Tarkovsky's films a try.
Absolutely amazing film and yeah, she should have won an Oscar for this film... it was the victim of infuriating studio politics. I don't generally recommend films, but I think you'd love Alien just because Sigourney Weaver is incredible.
Shes OG mother
MY FAVORITE MOVIE!!! So happy yall watched this!! And so happy yall didn’t guess the ending early, it was so impactful! ❤️
to be fair, I dont think whats happening is time travel at all, or at least not time travel in the sense most fiction puts it in.
Highly recommend Interstellar!
This movie was so damn much for me when I first watched it haha can’t wait for the commentary!!! 😂❤
Y’all are on an absolute roll lately and I love you
Omg pleaseeee watch interstellar
For those curious about the music, it's called "on the nature of daylight" by Max Richter
32:09 i was reminded on my last watch about how louise said the language you speak affects how you see the world. these soldiers have been ‘speaking the language’ of aggression, fear and violence through the media they consume, so every interaction with the heptapods is viewed through that lens and that is why they immediately respond with violence. something that i think is especially pertinent right now in our own world.
loved your reaction, and laughed out loud at ‘what if they get test anxiety’ over the math problems. can relate!
So glad ya'll finally did a movie reaction again. I don't watch TV show reactions, so I've been jonesin'!
everything about arrival is truly remarkable. I was in absolute pieces the first time I watched it. I am all about sci-fi that makes me cry.
I love when the movie took ahold of you and you both got emotional ❤ This movie is AMAZING. I bawled my eyes out in the theatre when the end credits rolled
YESSSSSSSSS
So excited to share with ya! 💚😘
We haven’t seen Interstellar but we were the biggest champions for EEAAO during its Oscar run. Michelle Yeoh hive rise up!!!
You should start with Alien, for sure! Great sci-fi horror to help you cross over. I would also suggest Event Horizon, which is horror before sci-fi.
While I adore this movie, I honestly think Amy's performance in Sharp Objects is 10x better.
Interstellar should be on deck, boys. 😊
This movie is. So. Slept on!! It was absolute burglary for Miss Adams
#toomuch 😅
Alien/Aliens must-see.
Event Horizon ! Scary.
District 9 : a wild ride.
Signs : a good Night Shyamalan.
Contact : beautiful with mother Jodie Foster & matthew mcconaughey playing a priest. 😅
Regarding watching SciFy movies…DEFINITELY check out the Aliens series!! Some seriously scary goodness!!
OMG an iconic film...that dance performance 😅
Oscar for Amy!
Hi guys.
You reminded me that I still haven’t seen this film. Just watched it before watching your video and Oh. My. God! A masterpiece! 😢😭
Yes!!!! You should definitely watch interstellar ❤
Amy was Oscar nominated for this movie.
She famously was not nominated 🙃
There is NO 'time travel' in this movie.
"Meet us halfway, y'all are the guest" lmao
So happy you two finally watched this! One of my faves. It's gorgeous and devastating and Amy Adams is amazing. 🥰
Interstellar! Best sci fi film in years!
YAY THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVES
Not only is Alien one of the best SciFi movies of all time, it's one of the best horror movies of all time. I'd love to see your reaction x
loveee this film, and as always love the reaction 💜
If Amy hadn't done her job, this story would have been a dud on the screen. She carries the story. And yet no Oscar nod.
Dune Part 1 and Part 2. Now.
Thanks for this reaction guys. Have you alread watched "All of us strangers"?
It's one of my absolute favourite films, I'm gutted it's not getting a physical release. Was absolutely weeping in the cinema at the ending!
@@Mulbert Me too. That movie devasted me but I cant stop watching (and every reaction to it).
Have you ever seen "Her"? Amy Adams is in that movie too, and so is Joaquin Phoenix
(Both these are SO worth a second watch makes so much more sense the second time. )
Bro on the right figured it out. Friendo to the left was lost lost in the mist.
29:52 not the easy bake oven 😂
I love yall so much ❤
I saw this at an Alamo Drafthouse preview in Dallas the night after the 2016 election. It was a lot to handle after that debacle.
ahh that was such a good reaction!! loved how gagged y'all were by the twist lol. if you want some more girl-power sci-fi recs, i suggest Annihilation (2018) and Coherence (2013)!!
You guys should watch The Thing
We did it back in January 😊
Legit one of my favorite films of all time 💖
Do Dune part 1 and 2 next please!!!!!!
I love the book this movie is based on. An interesting take on first contact
You guys should watch War of the Worlds (2005)
Obviously Amy Adams ate it... But to say this is her greatest performance... I beg to differ. They must not have seen Psycho Beach Party ⛱️🔪🌀 mkay 🤪
Idk if you guys watched arcane yet (Ella purnell) or queens gambit (Anna Taylor joy) but both have great girl power I think you’d love
❤❤❤❤❤
43:24
For the love of all things holy, watch Alien (1979 Theatrical edit) and Aliens (1990 Special Edition). You guys do them, I will pay for Patreon access for those two. Alien is terrifying; Aliens is a stress nightmare.
Oh finally Amy Adams you are mother
Hi guys! I'm one minute in to and I'm already subscribed. You guys are so fun to watch! I hope you will watch Interstellar next! Please-oh-please! I would get out my eatin dress! 😆
second time watching is even harded, the best movie ever
This is a really good movie. Joined the Live earlier but my connection decided to go out. Any is so good here. As for other sci-fi movies, all the ones you named you should definitely watch, plus Annihilation.
pleaseee react to more scifi stuff. alien and life are great watches for sure.
now we wanted Dune Reaction
Y’all have to watch Interstellar next pleaseeeeee!!!
Few words. August moon guard down music video😂
This movie is amazing
Pretty much all those scifi movies you mentioned are bangers. Since you guys like horror too I'd figure stuff like Alien (and Aliens) and Life would be right up your alley.
Thank you!! 🤗
Hey, you guys wanna come over for a dinner party? Spanish tapas theme?
Yall gotta watch Sharp Objects to absorb more Amy Adams top tier content.
My cat died one December morning in 2016 and later that day I went to see this movie to get my mind off of the experience. It was hard for me to enjoy the movie and it's still a little bit tainted for me a bit. But it is a good movie.
You guys should react to a movie called Unsane, it left me bamboozled
omg you must watch interestellar!
Thee Best extra terrestrial film.
Think about it, this is very much a Pro-Life movie. She decided to conceive and give her baby a life even though she knew what would happen.
