The stoner guy is as ripped as Hemsworth, so they had to dress him in heavy shirts to cover it up.
I was going to comment this lol I saw him in something recent before I saw this in theaters and was like wow
No way that's true, no way he's ripped
at that time, yes he's as ripped. considering hemsworth is not as ripped as he is now. even the film crew said it lol @@Rash23215
The stoner guy was definitely ripped.... 😂
Looked it up, I was expecting the muscle, wasn't expecting the hair 🥵
I love how they were worried about Dana smashing the glass elevator while she was pounding on it when A WEREWOLF CHARGING AT IT DID NOTHING lmao
No, the werewolf was charging at its own containment. Assuming the same applies to their own elevator is unreasonable.
@@sergeyromanov5560 it's unreasonable to assume that the containers that all looked exactly the same are made of the same material?
I love the fact that, because they treated the rirual as "just another day at the job" initially, they drugged and manipulated them into the 5 WRONG archetypes, not noticing that these 5, who in lore would be the ones to bring down the system WERE the 5 PERFECT representatives of the archetypes, but in reverse order.
They "whore" was in the same monogamous commited relationship since childhood, and was in fact the Fool, because she was always making self-deprecating jokes and trying to make others happy.
The "jock" was a Social Studies major whose first scene was him recommending books. He was actually the Scholar.
The "scholar" first appeared catching a ball from the second floor, across the window and the street. He was actually the Jock.
The "virgin" was having an affair wirh her teacher, was willing to creep on the guy next door through the mirror and her first scene had her pantless at the window receiving not only her friend, but also her best friend's boyfriend naked. By horror movie logic, SHE was the Whore.
And, finally, the "fool" was, by his own admission, a virgin, and the only character who doesn't talk about sex during the whole movie. HE WAS THE VIRGIN, and him dying before the main character was what actually ended the world, not the other way around.
They mixed and confused the 5 archetypes, so the ritual would never work.
This is brilliant! Of course I recognized that they didn't fit the type they were assigned but I never realised that they all fit a different one perfectly!
holy shitttt
Absolutely not. The point is that they are people. They don't fit any stereotype.
Jules is smart. The are all smart; none of them is The Fool.
Curt and Holden are both smart AND athletic. Neither is The Athlete (who is supposed to be a dumb jock), nor The Scholar (who is supposed to be weak).
Dana, who made a mistake in her sex life, was definitely not The Whore. Both she and Jules are aware of their sexuality, she is just a bit more reserved.
And Marty did not admit he is a virgin, and he definitely doesn't fit with The Virgin stereotype.
So, you're totally missing the point.
@@migmit No, the first comment is more logical according to the script of the movie and the stereotypes it uses.
@@Natalianegora No it's not. The movie is not “using” stereptypes, it's subverting them.
This movie was filmed before Chris Hemsworth was CHRIS HEMSWORTH. It was shelved for a few years and I believed it was released in theaters after Thor came out so a lot of people were just as surprised he got killed of when and how he did.
That's interesting. All this time, I was under the impression it was made post-Thor to capitalise on his rising stardom; I suppose the second part is true in a retrospective sense.
Yep. Whedon was a producer on the film and he was already in talks with Marvel for Avengers. They were struggling finding a Thor. Drew Goddard and Whedon watched the dailies of Chris's inspiration speech and LITERALLY called Marvel like "yo we found Thor." Apparently that was a Wednesday, he had an audtion Thursday, and was back on set on Friday. And he was kinda shy because everyone started teasing him about how famous he was going to be
HAHAHA! The disgust Chey had for those shoes was everything! 🤣🤣🤣
Is his name Chey?! I always thought it was Chase! 😂
@@EmiigiirlI always thought that too but then I followed both of them and I was like ‘oh his name is Chey. He shares the same name as my brother’
"What the fuck, Polly Pocket?!"
🤣🤣🤣🤣
"Who are they praying to?" might be one of the most meta comments in a reaction I have heard to date! I love watching people react to this movie.
I like the idea that every horror movie can be explained by this movie.
So here's a fun bit of trivia: when Sigourney says that the sun will come up in 8 minutes, in exactly 8 minutes after that the lights would turn on in the theatres! Just another little fun meta thing from this movie. Love it so much, definitely one of my favorites of all time.
Fun fact: Heather Langenkamp "Nancy" had her own horror effects company and she did all the monster designs
Didn't know she was behind them, but there are some great behind-the-scenes clips about the monster costumes/effects. Almost all of them (except the obvious stuff like the giant snake and the ghosts) were practical effects, including the vast majority of monsters in the long-shot of the elevator room.
One my personal favorite horror movies. My mind was blown when I first watched it.
Seeing it in theaters first day with friends and a packed theater was wild!
AfricanGrey? Hmmm, have I found another Yellowjackets/Misty fan? 😂❤
And, INDEED … this might just be my all time fav horror movie 😂
I loved that this movie basically explains almost every other horror movie. It’s a love letter to horror films.
Also, Sigourney Weaver.
Q: What sound does it make when you hit a zombie with a giant coffee cup?
A: Bong.
I so want that coffee cup. And I don't even smoke.
My favourite thing about this movie, is definitely the play on reverse, different, character tropes. And how that works into the whole narrative of the story
Love this! my interpretation was in this universe monsters are real and are used for this ritual throughout the ages to appease the old gods. Then obviously like urban legends little details trickle out and become folklore which obviously becomes modern day horror tropes. So basically everything we love from horror movies stems from this ritual.
Very true, and the "Old Gods" are us, the audience. If the movie doesn't follow the formula we expect, we trash the movie world AKA movie reviews and means no sequels so the world is destroyed. The concept and way it is pulled off is fantastic.
Yup, its a clever concept both from a literal in universe POV as well as a metaphor for audiences and criticism of genre film in general.
@@Smokie_666
40:37 Basically the central joke in the premise is that all those played-out horror tropes exist because ancient eldritch gods demand it every year
Which is actually the horror audience who flock to movies like this to watch people get butchered.
so This is my belief.. we the horror fans are the gods .. the ppl in white where the directors sourgorney was the producer .. it was hella meta speaking on what directors had to do for their movies for their horror fans(the ancient gods) to be apeased. The young adults were the cast of the movie "we wanted"and the customers are the general audience. Rewatching with this in mind makes the movie was more understandable.
Yes yes yes! Always nice to come across another fan who really gets it.
Amen ! And when things get stale, and Jigsaw doesn't cut it anymore, then along comes Jordan Peel, who destroys the entire world and sets up a new paradigm.
I like this theory!!
@@salyxWait, I said I liked this theory, and I do, but is that how the movie is actually supposed to be interpreted?
@@mikaelafox6106 a lot of what’s said/happens in the movie doesn’t make sense otherwise (at least as far as my watching goes). It’s supposed to be an extra level of meta, yes.
What was cool with this movie is Heather Langenkamp (Nancy from the Nightmare franchise) worked with her husband on the special effects on this movie
I love the reveal of The Director.
I knew that person was in the movie, but I'm sure it was a big surprise for a lot of people, if they didn't recognize the voice over the PA.
Apparently, they were really interested in the werewolf.
Yeah, that voice was a dead giveaway. I've seen different reaction posts where people thought her billing as The Director meant she was was direction the film. Too funny!
Love seeing how many different ways people think of this story in the comments! My interpretation was that it’s actually THIS universe. That every B horror movie you’ve ever seen with ‘unknown’ actors was actually a sacrificial rite. That’s why the same tropes appear over and over again. This is because in addition to the blood itself, the ritual has to be witnessed, the fear of the witnesses is what keeps the ritual locked in until the next sacrifice. Back in the day, human sacrifice would be done in a large ceremony in front of hundreds or thousands of people. But now, people don’t believe in the old gods so they have to create the fear in another way….
The stoner is definitely final boy material. Watch your mouth, Wesley. Y’all was sleeping on my boy hard and he ate this movie tf up. Like he was literally the only person calling shit out and making sense. He is the moment😂😂
This is the type of movie that you have to rewatch in order to understand it fully. Also, on the intro where the underground people are talking, they stated that they once failed a ritual on 1998. Now this is going to be a fun game, since this movie is an homage to every single horror movies, what horror movie in 1998 features every main characters (that fit the stereotypical roles) survive till the end of the movie?
I know this is 8 months late, but I gotta say it was The Faculty. All five mains loosely fit the archetypes and they all survived
I love this movie and I'm so glad y'all reacted to it. I love the metaphor that the old gods are the horror audience and how they have to have their horror a certain way, even when they complain about there being nothing new. Also love all the nods to horror from other countries, but they should have included France.
And Italy. Giallo movies especially.
With this being directed by Drew Goddard (a Joss Whedon protégé) in his directorial debut, produced by Whedon, and written by Whedon and Goddard. Making the essentially a Whedon side project. Which explains the script, plot, young girls scantly clad, and visual style.
And thank you Petty Pumpkins for another great review. Your reactions is identical to how we all acted when it first came out. As well as thank you for all your hard work on the channel. You both make a difference in our collective lives.
I'm crying at the nine year old Japanese girls defeating the evil. Baby queens!
This was probably one of the first super meta movies I ever watched.
I interpreted Sigourney Weaver's appearance as effectively saying the events of the Alien franchise were real and that she survived them (as "the virgin"), and I just about peed my pants with glee.
Granted, that interpretation could be wrong, but man. That would be pretty sick.
Fun Fact: Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard wrote the screenplay for this movie over a three day weekend.
And both regret writing a simple two sentence description into the movie...
"Werewolves, Aliens, Mutants, and Robots pour out of the elevators at crazy speed decimating the men even as they begin to fire. It's a warzone in a second."
These two sentences cost the production MILLIONS OF DOLLARS because of the massive amount special effects required to bring this scene to life.
I love the Killer Ballerina! Her backstory PLEASE!
The one with the weird face? I think that was The Tooth Fairy.
One of my favorite horror comedies. The deliberate tropes had me rolling. Marty is by far my favorite. ❤
Marty ftw!
Chris Hemsworth was still a C list actor when this was filmed so naturally he wasn't the lead.
the movie is a commentary or satire of horror movie formats and the horror fans. sometimes changing the formula will cause horror fans to upset cause ultimately a lot of them love things ot be done a certain way.
The polly pocket shoes are called mary janes...and mary jane is the reason SHE and mister stoney ACTUALLY get to the end. costume designer that day was working overtime.
This movie is fantastic, it makes fun of horror movies but in a very respectful way to the point of giving all those things we love about horror movies not only an explanation but also a purpose.
39:42 i love how everyone is shocked to see sigourney weaver in this lol but the best fun fact about this movie is that she accepted immediately because she saw that she'd have a scene with the werewolf. she literally pet it behind the scenes lol
Ha! It was so much fun watching you guys try to figure out what was going on! This movie is great.
And now for something almost different: "Tucker and Dale vs Evil" ... with a hilariously twisted concept.
Without a doubt, society came up with the horror themed sacrifices. It's like Death Race and Squid Game. They don't care about humanity.
Killer Unicorn for the gays!!! I can't stop watching this channel you two kill me every time.... Thanks for the content and please keep it coming! 😁
IM SO HAPPY YOU LOVED THIS MOVIE
it's my favorite of all time
1. there are a TON of horror movie references throughout
2. the director wanted as many practical effects as possible, but due to budget constraints and an unexpectedly large area to fill during "the purge", they had to resort to some CGI
3. there are a lot of details in the movie subverting the roles given to each character. like jules was loyal to her boyfriend and yet she was assigned as the whore. Dana slept with a professor that was probably married. they were all in college so none of them were dumb, and yet "dumb jock" etc
4. theres a pic of sigourney weaver holding hands with the werewolf. it is my everything
5. the whole movie is a meta commentary on the horror audience/filmmmakers. the gods keep demanding the same tropes over and over in horror media. but it is up to us to break the cycle.
6. this movie was supposed to tie into the SCP foundation. basically a creepypasta website with a few spinoff games. but they couldnt get rights or something
I love how genuinely pissed he got at reds damn footies she decided to wear to the damn FOREST!😂😂😂
Yes the company was using various different drugs and pheromones to influence their behavior, it started before they even got to the cabin/prior to the start of the movie. It’s mentioned briefly but they talk early on about how they doped Jules hair dye to make her less inhibited. Presumably Chris’s character was being covertly fed TRT or something similar.
The people that worked on this movie actually recommened Chris for Marvel, this movie just came out after Thor
I'm so happy you're reacting to this!!! Lots of love from Canada. Sweet baby Jesus, you two are freaking hilarious!!
The algorithm randomly sent me here a year after you posted it and I just have to tell you, you two are gold. What a fun rewatch, thank you, your sass is much appreciated.
My favorite monster design is the ballet dancer! Suuuuper creeepy!
Absolutely LOVE Fran Kranz, especially in his role as Topher in Dollhouse. Also Amy Acker is always lovely to see in everything
This is one of my favorite movies!! I clicked so fast when I saw this video pop up. Your reactions were hilarious! I wish the movie was just a little longer because I really wanted more monster action at the end. 🤡👻🦄
There are so many layers, every time you watch you catch something else... I love the Merman payoff, but also you can see the intern who shared his bet with maintenance on one of the screens holding up a sign begging for help.
The stoner always has so many clothes on because he is legit ripped af. They didn’t think it matched his character.
Hilarious reaction as always! Have you both seen The Final Girls (2015)? It has a similar horror/comedy/meta vibe to it. Also had a sweet side that made me tear up a little bit. I think you'd like it :)
I adore that movie!
"You're back! Yay!!!" 😂
Yessss 👏
I love this one! This whole movie is about horror movies. It's like, The Ancient Ones are us (the viewers) and the people in control are the ones who are doing everything to make a horror movie good enough to satisfy us (directors, writers etc) and they're losing control of things. The film has a cliché point, it has young people, a cabin in the middle of nowhere and OBVIOUSLY cursed objects that they will touch. This all makes a big reference to The Evil Dead and each monster refers to another horror movie/series/game (Hellraiser, Werewolf, The Shining, It, Alien, Anaconda etc). There's a part where the guy says "they don't worry about Japan" or something like that, because horror movies from Japan are (almost) always considered very efficient and well made. Long story short, being clichéd or taking a turn nobody expected (Marty being alive and then dying along with Dana), viewers are almost never satisfied (that's why Dana says "it's time to give someone else a chance" wich basically means another horror movie) and this "never satisfied thing" is represented by the hand crushing everything. That's just what I remember, there's a lot more stuff there.
Love this movie, so corny, but new and fresh at the same time. And Fun Fact. If you look Really Closely when the monsters are let out, you can see the 'One Eyed, One Horned, Flying Purple People Eater.' Also, though brief, LOVE the Sigourney Weaver Cameo at the end.
Its him cussing out 9 years olds for me 😭😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Haha. As soon as I heard her voice over the speaker I knew it was Sigourney Weaver
I love love this movie, it was made for us horror girlies. The way that we as the audience are the ancient ones, so meta, so good. I'm glad you guys lose your minds over it lol 😂❤
This is one of my favorite horror movies! So glad to see you reacting to it!
Although I hate that all the reactors miss that the people, especially Jules and Kurt, aren't actually their horror movie stereotypes. They said multiple times that they were drugging them to slow down cognition but reactors still don't get it! Why is that?
And the part where they were saying "they don't care about anyone just themselves"...oh the irony!
Every horror film could be connected to this film in a way & I love the that
Director and co-writer Drew Goddard grew up in New Mexico near White Plains, where the government nuclear weapons program is based. He was fascinated by the people who worked there, whose day to day job involve such lethal weapons, and the fact that such a small town had so many churches. None of the people in the facility think they're evil; they're just doing their job to protect America.
Love this movie! I saw it in the theater and when the monsters got let loose we were all cheering LOL. So glad that y’all enjoyed it as well. ❤😊
I love how everyone hates the bad guys in this movie, until they turn out to be the saviors of humanity lol.
Yaaas, I am obsessed with this movie. So glad you finally had a watch, and that you enjoyed too!!
Was dying at the comments on the shoes 😂
Chey´s commentary throughout was gold. Nicely done, great reaction from you two (again)!
This was such a wonderful reaction by you two.
So happy you enjoyed it.
This movie was made and then sat on the shelf for 3 years. It almost didn't get released. Crazy huh? The producers didn't think people would get it. Later Hemsworth got a break in a little movie called "Thor". So even though it was made before "Thor" it didn't get release until nearly a year after it. Also why he's in a supporting role rather than lead. Just about everyone I've seen watch this LOVES it. Its insane how afraid the higher ups are so scared of risk. This gem would have never seen the light of day if not for Marvel popularity.
The "anchient ones" are us, the viewers, who want to see tropes in our horror films in a formula we are used to. If we don't get it, we stop watching horror films and their world, the world in a horror film, will stop existing.
Not the "His brain is so big" to Hemsworth's characters quip about the credit card and the gas pump😂😂 I'm dead 😂😂
The Easter eggs in this are fantastic.
We are the old gods! Think of it, when we're not happy with a movie we rise up
Yes!
I actually have no words and I’m still trying to comprehend what in the hell this movie was 😂
I strongly suggest watching Deadmeat's Kill Count on Cabin in the Woods. It shows super interesting behind the scenes info.
I think I read somewhere that the gods are supposed to represent us, the audience, because we have become jaded to all the horror movies and we are never pleased, we always want more and we cheer for characters dying for our entertainment 🤯
So happy to see you react to this. One of my comfort movies
Fun Random Fact -- Sigourney Weaver's favorite creature was the Werewolf. They said that many times she would come to set asking to see it. lol
”Are they about to face an ancient entity or something” hey thats not a nice thing to to call one of the most distinguished actresses in the industry
Somebody asked whether there would be a sequel, and they said, "Did you see the movie?"
Such a great parody and homage to the horror tropes and genres of the past 40 plus years. Ppl have criticized it but I love it. Besides it's hard to bash a film that's literally making fun of itself.
My favorite creature design was that dance of the sugarplum fairy ballerina - the infinite rows of teeth are such a creepshow, I love it! 😆
❤❤ I literally adore you both and I’m shocked you had never seen it I went to see it in theaters there is even a monster reference to BUFFY. this movie is so camp so meta and iconic
THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS! I need some wine and bon bons b/c this is like a gift to me!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love you guys!
This was by far my favourite reaction 😂 having already seen the movie and knowing what was going to happen, hearing the continuous "wtF is going on?!" comments had me absolutely crying with laughter 🤣🤣
I too loved this movie! Such creative choices, from creature design to acting! The weird scorpion/spider(?) robot was indeed cool, and Bloody Blowhole is a classic! The Murdercorn was a nice treat too!
I'm eating my lunch, only gone to 8 minutes and you both have me cracking up laughing I can't eat ! This is going to be a good reaction!😂
Has anybody explained yet that we, society, are the 'ancient ones'?
They call the RV a van because the Mystery Machine from Scooby Doo is a van.
This was hilarious! Here’s some trivia for you…
They really wanted Fran Kranz to play the stoner because he was so perfect for the role. The problem was that he, in real life, is build like a brick s house! He body is better than Chris Hemsworth. So, the costume department had to hide how well built he was by layering him in all of those clothes. He also had to hunch over to make himself look smaller than Chris because Chris was the jock.
Fran is really hot in real life! Never judge a book….
Not these horny gays gagged that Marty was still alive but they were fully expecting that Chris would come back from that fall. This movie is hilarious.
This is a movie where you catch a lot more on a rewatch. I laughed when you mentioned the deadites fairly early in the movie, cuz that's one of the options on the whiteboard. There's some fun parts to pause and catch all the different monsters thrown in... on the whiteboard to see all the different options people are betting on, or the elevators, before and after the system purge. Obviously some gad to change a little due to copyright.
I like the idea that all horror films are real in this world, and all part of this ritual.
I honestly think the scariest monsters during the attack scene were the killers in the porcelain masks because that could and really happens in real life. Very much a reference to The Strangers
Every single horror monster in this movie is based on either real events, or the actual horror monsters of legend. The porcelain mask characters are directly based on Michael Myers and The Strangers.
The bat is a dragon vampire bat.
The slow moving girl is based on the ring
The slow moving zombies are based on night of the living dead and the walking dead
The clown is based on IT as Terrifier wasn’t out yet
The scarecrow is based on every sentient scarecrow movie,
the squid that kills the girl is just your typical giant squid monster, the anaconda is directly from the giant snake movies, the tree that comes out is based on the whomping willow from Harry Potter, etc.
There are even multiple zombie types from the left for dead series
Behind the scenes showed the witch, the boomer, the tank, and the hunter
What a perfect reaction video, I was giggling the whole time 😂 I’m an old so I saw this one in the theater and I went in completely unaware on purpose-I was like “I wanna see a big dumb horror movie. This looks good.” Just blew my mind, wish I could experience it all over again! Top ten fave for sure 🙌
If any movie deserves a prequel, IT IS THIS ONE!!!!
I HAVE QUESTIONS THAT NEED ANSWERS
I guess a sequel is out of the question.
🤣
At the pre-release screening a reporter asked if there was going to be a sequel. Wheedon asked incredulously "Did you even watch the movie?"@@robbob5302
I think Goody Proctor is what you were reaching for :) I'm sure the Addam's family would take her in tho ;)
Oh Yall were CUTTING UP this episode!! 😂😂❤😂❤ one of my all time favorite horror movies. The twists, turns, & references Honey. The Monster Mash For Real! 😂😂
The Snake, the Bat, & the Merman 🧜♂️ 🩸 💦
Not them truly discussing how Chris might or might not make the jump and I’m just thinking “force field force field force field” 😂 also I wish they would have not shown the force field before he jumped would have had more of an impact
Puff puff pass away is my philosophy on life
Loved that you reacted to this movie! One of my favorite movies and my favorite horror react duo!!❤
The funniest thing is that the stoner character is wearing so many layers because the actor was absolutely jacked and that wouldn't work for the character.
The "I learned it from watching you!" bit was from an anti-drug PSA from back in the day.
i love the ending of this movie.... such a twist
this was one of those movies (like jennifers body) where, when it first came out, people HATED it. they thought the ending was stupid & it didnt make any sense, then it gained a huge cult following and had a resurgence online! i'm so glad it did. And while i dont condone Joss whedon's actions, he is a truly terrible person, goddamn hes a good writer >:(
I LOVE THIS MOVIE! Cuz just like y'all said it was so different so unique!
Just seeing ALL of the things that everyone is scared of is so awesome!!!!! For me, it would be the crawlers, the ones who throw up in your mouth, and clowns. First time watching this I actually cried cuz of how scared I was from that clown haha!
Amazing reactions AS ALWAYS!!!!!!!
Y'all should react to Soft & Quiet !
