The Norwegians at the beginning were trying to save everyone. "Get the hell away! It's not a dog! It's imitating a dog! It's not real! Get away, idiots!" Poor bastards.
It's funny you mentioned getting some women in there to fix the situation. Carpenter specifically made the cast all male to make the movie feel more bleak and lonely. The scene with MacReady and the chess computer doen't just foreshadow him being willing to destroy everything to keep the Thing from winning, it also serves to violently rip away the only female presence in the movie, so the audience feels the absence more
Some have gone so far as to say that an all male cast dealing with paranoia of infection in the early eighties was symbolic of AIDS paranoia. I don't know if that may be looking too much into it, but I have heard the theory.
Offhand I can't remember a single reaction creator ever NOT pleading for the safety of the runaway "dog". Conversely, when reacting to The Exorcist they tend to assume the St.Joseph's medallion dropped at the scene of the possession is some evil thing, possibly the cause of the possession itself. I'm convinced that given an irl horror scenario the average UA-cam reaction creator wouldn't make it lol.
The "Husky" in the film was actually a wolf-Alaskan Malamute hybrid named Jed. This was his film debut, but he starred in some other films as well. Thanks for the reaction!
There are so many theories about whether Childs or Macready is human or a Thing, but I think they're both human. That's the tragedy. They're both human and they're both going to die because they can't trust each other.
They’re both going to die because they will freeze. It doesn’t matter if they trust each other. Actually with the passing of the drink at the end it is implied there is a bit of fck it I’ll trust you energy. The tragedy is that the whole camp is destroyed and everyone is dead and they will soon be too because they can’t risk calling for saving or go anywhere or even call anyone.
When they first put Blair out in the shed, he is extremely paranoid and hostile. When Mack goes back out to check on him later, he is apologetic and begging to go back in, but he has a noose hanging from the ceiling. It's clear that he was planning to commit suicide before the thing can take him over, but the thing gets him before he can do it. By the time Mack checks on him, he is a thing.
This. It's also compounded by them later going into the shed to look for him again after that, _and there's a punched-in hole in the roof._ The poor man tried to save humanity by sabotaging everything to trap the organism in the Antarctica, warned McReady about the most possibly infected member at the time (Clark, who sadly wasn't)... and right after preparing a noose to off himself and escape the nightmare, the thing crawled in through the roof and took him.
Found out recently that the noose was a touch by Brimley (Blair’s actor), and Carpenter loved it. I find it adds a real level of dark comedy to that scene.
Outstanding reaction! One of my all time favs. Saw it in the theater with my best friend , both of us seniors in HS in 1982. It was utterly shocking back then!
This movie will forever be a masterpiece. It's one of those horror movies that still creeps me out to the fullest and is very traumatizing. 😂 Such a classic

I have to say though that I'm absolutely heartbroken that you haven't seen more young Kurt Russell movies! He was so yummy!! Big Trouble in Little China? Escape From New York? Overboard???? Classics!
This movie! 🤣"The dog is gonna live. i just feel it" And you guys need to expand on your Kurt Russel experience. *Overboard* is the one. Hot, sweaty carpenter Kurt, absolute Queen and comedic genius Goldie Hawn. Hollywood's most attractive power couple in iconic 80s glory.
One of my favorite Kurt Russell movies is an 80s rom-com he made with his wife called "Overboard". It's a film I watched a lot with my grandmother, because ot was her favorite movie.
I LOVE this movie! One of my FAV 80's horror movies. It's just SO Perfect and Iconic to me. It also holds a sweet spot in my heart b/c it came out the year I was born. :) OH! Btw, The Swede in the beginning, what he is yelling translates to: "Get the hell away from that thing. That's not a dog, it's some sort of thing! It's imitating a dog, it isn't real! GET AWAY YOU IDIOTS!!"
Y’all continue to surprise and delight me with your reaction choices. The Thing is without a doubt an 80s horror favorite that not only further elevated John Carpenter’s status as a unique genre director, but also presented practical effects that still impress to this very day. The whole cast gave great performances and the story’s pacing and isolated moments makes it very hard to trust anyone and pick out The Thing amongst them in the first watch. I can’t wait to see what y’all watch next, and if you haven’t seen it already then another wild film from John Carpenter I recommend checking out is his highly underrated gem In the Mouth of Madness. ☺️
I think Blair's fate was the most tragic. When he was locked up he was human. When they went to see him again with the noose hanging and him a lot calmer he had already turned. When we see him in the end with his underclothes intact it means his body wasn't taken over with tenticles violently grabbing him but rather through a single cell that got to him. Taking over him slowly. The noose seemed like a visual gag at first but then I realized he tried to kill himself when he understood what was happening to him but it was already too late.
I've seen this movie a hundred times and never noticed that Childs is not wearing the same jacket at the end, which means he was probably taken over by the thing/Blair.
When Mac lights Palmer up and bursts out the door, that's a callback to the original Thing From Another World where James Arness' Thing does the same... well, thing.
So glad you guys finally got to see this phenomenal movie!! It’s one of my absolute favorites. I’ve seen it at least a dozen times and it never gets old. Plus…Kurt Russell!!!! Hubba hubba!
Blair was a little smarter than the others and he got the point very quickly, that the biggest issue was to prevent the thing from ever reaching civilization, which is why he sabotaged the helicopter and radio equipment. I believe they are imitated rather than infected. This is a remake of a rather good 1951 movie called "The Thing From Another World" that John Carpenter was a fan of. It was from a 1938 story called "Who Goes There?"
This is an adaptation of the 1938 story. The 1951 movie was inspired by the story but has almost nothing in common with the 1938 story or John Carpenter's film; there is no shapeshifting alien, it's just a vegetable alien that drinks blood. Seriously. Meanwhile John Carpenter's film is almost a direct translation of the 1938 story, including the characters, the shapeshifting alien, the antarctic base, etc.
@@cthulhuwu_ In 1951, it would have been very difficult to do the shapeshifting. Although not close to the story, the 1951 movie is good in its own right.
I love how someone previously mentioned the absence of Childs's breath at the end end of the movie while he was speaking with MacReady, confirming at least in my mind, Childs was the thing.
Omg can’t believe both of you have gone this long without watching this classic. The practical effects in this are GAG WORTHY (both figuratively and literally lol) The head detach/spider scene still creeps me out to this day 🫣
Yo, funny reaction to this amazing movie. Btw. The dog in the beginning was actually the Thing. So the guy that put the dog in the dog pen wasn´t doing anything wrong. He couldn´t have known that the dog was already an alien. There is actually a scene when Kurt starts shooting the dogs, where he literally tries to stop him from killing them. So, just to clear this little misunderstanding, he loved his dogs ;)
One of my favorite horror movies of all time. The practical effects and FX makeup are a masterclass in how to do it well. I love that this movie stands the test of time and years later is still so suspenseful and horrifying. I'm glad you finally watched it.

This is part of a loose trilogy of films by John Carpenter. The “apocalypse trilogy” along with Prince of Darkness and In The Mouth Of Madness. I think you should check those out.
The greatest horror movie in my opinion. I cant think of a worse scenario to find oneself in. Dealing with an intelligent foe, you dont know if its evil or simply trying to survive, who can't be killed except via fire/acid, who can kill YOU just by touching you, can imitate anything organic and its very hard to tell what is an imitation, and if it reaches water or transportation its not just the end of humanity but all living things on earth. I had the biggest crush on Kurt in this as a kid. It inspired me to one day get a flamethrower 😅 every Winter, when i hear the wind howl....i think of this movie.
This is my favourite horror film. Its based on the novel 'Who Goes There?' Written by John W.Campbell Jr in 1938. It was first adapted as a film in 1951 which was called The Thing from Another World. This 1982 adaptation is actually very close to the original book story, whereas the 1951 adaptation is basically a standard 50s monster movie that has very little to do with the book story, but is still a fun watch.
