  • Native American Olympian Jim Thorpe trained like hell and became arguably the greatest athlete of the 20th century.
    About Drunk History:
    Based on the popular web series, Drunk History is the liquored-up narration of our nation's history. Host Derek Waters, along with an ever-changing cast of actors and comedians, travels across the country to present the rich tales that every city in this land has to offer. Booze helps bring out the truth. It's just that sometimes the truth is a little incoherent.

      The last of his kind he would’ve, bc he faced an insane amount of racial oppression, like having his medals taken away for stupid reasons, not getting them back until after he was long dead. The reason they were taken...white athletics were threatened by him.

    I love Drunk History, but am quite disappointed that you guys neglected to tell one of the most pivotal parts of the Jim Thorpe story, wherein he got stripped of his medals based on flimsy reasoning because the white establishment were threatened by a Native athlete outperforming them. He eventually got them back posthumously.

    • @daviswhite3591
      @daviswhite3591 5 років тому +118

      Yeah! Those white schools he played for? They all just hated him. Those white people cheering in his Olympic parade secretly hated him. I heard all those rich, white pro-ball team owners he played for hated him too! That's why they paid him top dollar for him.
      To this very day the NFL shits on his memory by awarding a player the Jim Thorpe award every season.

      @@daviswhite3591 his medals where stripped because the white establishment didn't like him lol Every black athlete can attest to this.... White ppl loved them and hated them but most of them couldn't even walk through the front door of a restaurant in the country where white ppl "loved" them.

    • @daviswhite3591
      @daviswhite3591 5 років тому +51

      Jesus Hondo Christ. First off, Jimbo wasn't full blood injun and he wasn't brought up poor.
      Secondly, at the time of his Olympic victory professional athletes were not allowed to compete. In college Thorpe played semiprofessional baseball in the summers for pocket change. In the eyes of the IOC this made Jimmy a Pro and they took his medals.
      Shitty? Yes. Racial? No.

    • @daviswhite3591
      @daviswhite3591 5 років тому +33

      Here's a thought: why don't we just look up how many Olympics athletes have been stripped of their medals and see how many are "minority" people? OBVIOUSLY if the IOC is racist we'd be able to see it in the data.
      Quick look annnnnd wow!
      The IOC is clearly racist!
      Over 85 percent of medals stripped are from the necks of white people!

    While I totally appreciate that you are choosing to honor Jim Thorpe, I think you make a huge mistake by saying "he entered Carlisle High School". This was a school where Native American children were removed from their Native families (he was from Oklahoma) and forced to go to school there with the objective, and I quote from its founder, "kill the Indian and save the Man". I've seen you do a great job addressing racial and social injustices on this program. I wish you would have contextualized his accomplishments in this way. He truly was remarkable and overcame way more than you depict here, including being stripped of his medals because he was also a "professional" athlete. He was the greatest athlete and even greater if you think about what he went through.

    Jim Thorpe: shoes stolen? No problem. Crushes opponents, wins the gold in trash shoes.

      True story! It wasn't until the 90s that his family got them back. I live about 15 miles from Jim's hometown. He's a legend.

      Why did they take them away from him?

    • @taracomcb
      @taracomcb 5 років тому +19

      @@minervaloves Because at the time the Olympics were supposed to only be for amateur athletes. He played professional baseball and so they ruled he was ineligible, but also probably because there was some underlying racism at work too. They actually restored them late: www.nytimes.com/1982/10/14/sports/jim-thorpe-s-olympic-medals-are-restored.html
      The book "Native American Son: The Life and Sporting Legend of Jim Thorpe" by Kate Buford is excellent if you want to learn more.
