About Drunk History:
Based on the popular web series, Drunk History is the liquored-up narration of our nation's history. Booze helps bring out the truth. It's just that sometimes the truth is a little incoherent.

My mom's friend was rescued by Ted Patrick. So pretty cool how they did an episode on him
WOW!! THAT'S AMAZING!! 💯❤
I knew someone here would know someone.
He helped a childhood friend of my dad as well
That's crazy...I never heard of this.
The Philippines needs Ted Patrick...The INC is trying to brainwash us all...
What's really messed up is that I've never heard of this guy. With all the talk about representation in Hollywood, Ted Patrick's life as a deprogrammer seems like great material for a feature film.
He's a bit more controversial that this clip shows, it'd make for a good movie, but a hard to digest one.
Yeaaaa he did some good things, but he also handcuffed a women to her bed for 2 weeks because the woman’s parents paid him 27k to deprogram her “leftist political views” so that’s something

He’s a truly great American! Brave but also clearly highly intelligent! I watched a documentary about him ages ago, in which he tells his story.
Looove your hair and glasses! And yeah, at that time too, they could've easily turned him into the bad guy somehow, he's awesome, I hope this gets more people to know who is is and learn about him.
You’re super pretty, idk what First Name Last Name is legitimately talking about
“Are y’all with the cult?”
“Its not a cult, it’s an organization that promotes love and-”

I literally just watched that episode. What a trip.

@@cyruss6536 please say that's a joke
@@cyruss6536 tell me you're being sarcastic
I always joke the main reason why I could never join a cult because the minute they ask for money. I'm already explaining why the cult isn't for me.
michaele: Yea, but most of the members joined with little to no money. They earned money, mostly, by passing out pamphlets and asking for donations (At least initially). If you were young and broke, as so many were in those days, they still wanted you.
Same reason I'll never join a church, they ask for money as soon as the service starts and then after the service they'll ask for 10% of your income. Fucking scammers.
Women don't have to give money, just their bodies
That part. It’s one of many reasons I stopped going to church.
@@EngelSlayer In COG, and in most cults, people gave all their money when they joined. But the majority of them did not have much. They earned money once in by giving pamphlets away and asking for money. And later, yes, there was prostitution. However, some people who had really high paying jobs did not do this. Unlike others, who renounced their "system jobs," they kept working and giving to the group.
Why didn't we get Ted Patrick in Black history month?!!!
boxertest Good point. But how cool is it that this story was presented as just straight up “our history”? He’s an American hero.
@@andrewwolff9129 Excellent point
Andrew Wolff not to sound like a “I don’t see color” asshole, but pretty much this is the first time I’ve really considered his race, seeing it portrayed (comically) visually. The fact he was black was barely a footnote I’ve noticed before.
But, yeah. He’s a black hero and he can be just A hero who invented a form of psyops in the fly due to his passion for helping these poor people. That’s captain America shit.
@@TheSaltySeaman Not sure if this is what you meant, but how are people who "don't see color" assholes?
Elisabeth Vavra Most of the people who say they don’t see color just don’t want to see the social issues that come with having certain skin colors :/

@Soup Pigeon Don't be fooled. That dog WILL KILL YOU!......by stealing your heart
I didn't know he infiltrated before he started kidnapping teens and bringing them back to their parents.
Any way, I love the fact that COG accused him of kidnapping (which he totally did) but the judges kept giving him a slap in the wrist instead of sending him to jail for decades.
Are u dumb He saved those ppl. WHEN THE COG WAS RUINING LIVES ESPECIALLY OF THE CHILDREN BORN INTO IT.
@@kaleahcollins4567 Calm your tits. Legally what he did was kidnapping, since they were taken somewhere against their will by force. Pretty sure OP wasn't saying he did anything wrong, but just that it was neat that even the judges in this case wouldn't let written law inhibit actual good being done.

It would have been nice if he had gotten to my parents, so that I wouldn't have had to be raised in the Children of God cult. But it's nice to know that he helped some get out. I'm glad I got out eventually too. Best decision of my life.

*shows cute little pupper*
There's another side to this story: Ted Patrick was paid incredible amounts of money by the parents to get the children back from whatever it was the parents didn't agree with. It wasn't just cults- it was also different political ideologies and sexual orientations that these parents wanted their adult children "rescued" from. He was also known to use some pretty extreme methods to bring them back- Ted Patrick did some amazing work for people who needed it and who were very grateful to be deprogramed, but also parents could hire him to force their kids to come back from whatever ideology they had themselves
Why does it makes you sad that this particular man was getting paid for his services???

I never heard of him either....
Honestly... I do lol!
That's because he kidnapped some people who actually weren't members of cults. Just left wing or gay and their patents didn't approve and he would tie them up and not feed them just like the cults.
@@ZacharyBittner You seem to be spreading bullshit reasonings.
If a cult has techniques that make people cults. Then why is it bad to use the same technique to make them anti-cults?
Same, never heard of him.
Cults are especially dangerous because outside people dont know how powerful emotions can get and cant empathize.
You are correct
Ted Patrick I appreciate your work, buddy
Gooper Loper , its hardly about emotions in cults but more about the mind, the intellect hence the term brainwashing. The Will of the person is their Mind, that's why it's always attacked. If your will is strong you can overcome many emotional imbalances.
This is so accurate. I was in a low place in my life when I fell in with a certain well known “religion”. I got sober as I dedicated my life to spreading their word. I would’ve taken a bullet for that organization. Thankfully I snapped out of it and became disillusioned and left.
Hi it's Paeonia and I'm Everything! You know that emotions come from the brain right?
"Vicious dogs" shows that cutest happiest pupper ever
The thing I hate the most about Drunk History is how they show you a historical figure in a strictly positive light, you get really excited about this cool new person you've found out about, go on reading more about them... and there comes the whiplash. Turns out they were trashy.
all people are complicated. Ted Patrick, as an example-he had many negative qualities but you probably dont know how it was like in the seventies. Cults were running rampant, totally destroying families and individual persons-the police couldnt help since the people were adults. Ted Patrick did many controversial things but overall his work was much more positive than negative. Somebody had to do illegal things in order to save families and young people.
"The difference between a cult and a religion is the amount of real estate they own" - Frank Zappa
Or if they're invited to the Prayer Breakfast in WH...
I love that quote!
i mean, i get the idea, but i doubt that there is any cult out there owning as much real estate as the catholic church... or are you impying... :D
Is this a pro cult statement or anti cult statement cause it could go either way
@I. Wynn Wynn Scientology isnt even a religion. Its like a book club/cult. Their "religion" is based off a sci-fi novel.

There's a great book called: Life in the Family: An Oral History of the Children of God. I read it as a book review for an oral history class. Reading the members/former member's words is fascinating and scary. This cult had a very strong hold which has left it's mark on history. Reprogramming has also came with its own controversy regarding gaining large amounts of money from the families.
