@@EngelSlayer In COG, and in most cults, people gave all their money when they joined. But the majority of them did not have much. They earned money once in by giving pamphlets away and asking for money. And later, yes, there was prostitution. However, some people who had really high paying jobs did not do this. Unlike others, who renounced their "system jobs," they kept working and giving to the group.

There's another side to this story: Ted Patrick was paid incredible amounts of money by the parents to get the children back from whatever it was the parents didn't agree with. It wasn't just cults- it was also different political ideologies and sexual orientations that these parents wanted their adult children "rescued" from. He was also known to use some pretty extreme methods to bring them back- Ted Patrick did some amazing work for people who needed it and who were very grateful to be deprogramed, but also parents could hire him to force their kids to come back from whatever ideology they had themselves

all people are complicated. Ted Patrick, as an example-he had many negative qualities but you probably dont know how it was like in the seventies. Cults were running rampant, totally destroying families and individual persons-the police couldnt help since the people were adults. Ted Patrick did many controversial things but overall his work was much more positive than negative. Somebody had to do illegal things in order to save families and young people.

In 1980 Patrick was paid $27,000 to carry out the deprogramming of Susan Wirth, a 35-year-old teacher living in San Francisco. He was hired by her parents, who objected to her involvement in leftist political activities. The process involved handcuffing her to a bed for two weeks and denying her food.[6][7] She was later released and after returning to San Francisco spoke out against deprogramming but declined to press legal charges against her parents or Patrick.
In 1980, Patrick was convicted of conspiracy, kidnapping, and false imprisonment. These charges were related to the abduction and attempted deprogramming of Roberta McElfish, a 26-year-old Tucson waitress.[11] Patrick was sentenced to one year in prison and fined five thousand dollars.

    From Ted Patrick's wiki:
"In 1980 Patrick was paid $27,000 to carry out the deprogramming of Susan Wirth, a 35-year-old teacher living in San Francisco. He was hired by her parents, who objected to her involvement in leftist political activities. The process involved handcuffing her to a bed for two weeks and denying her food.[6][7] She was later released and after returning to San Francisco spoke out against deprogramming but declined to press legal charges against her parents or Patrick."
A problem inherent in his method is that what is considered extremist thought, is subjective. What one person sees as a cult is seen as a faith to someone else. While COG is obviously a cult, being a democrat or a republican is not.
Also much of his work involved kidnapping adults who had made their own unfortunate decisions.
I think he appears to have done a lot of good, but his methods sure are questionable from an ethical stand point.
