I’ve watched a lot of the pole barn home builds on UA-cam and being a custom home builder I think this start to finish video is the best I’ve seen for those do it yourselfers needing a good overview of the building process. What you’ve done can be done by nearly anyone with the right amount of planning, budgeting and commitment. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to build a home. Just keep the first one simple like these folks have done. I’d encourage anyone interested in doing this to earmark this video for learning the process, how to techniques and inspiration. You will not only save money and enjoy the country lifestyle but by doing this you will both learn and acquire a lifetime skill set and acquire a confidence that will help you overcome many other challenges in your life’s journey. I built my first home when I was 22 years old working on it part time from my regular job and to my surprise a doctor bought it from me. So I kept on going and built another one, and then an other and another. I’m now a 76 year old but still enthusiastic about building. Thanks for making this video and to all that watch it be encouraged. Best wishes to everyone.
You and your family are such an inspiration, my wife and I have a 2 year old and we are so excited to move out to the country and build a pole barn house. Thanks for all the great videos!!!
Talk about an inspiration man. Me and my wife have been stalking the channel for awhile, and are purchasing a piece of land to do a build similar! We just had a little one and want to be mortgage free. Thanks for sharing! Many happy years to come in your home with your family
You will never regret including your kids in projects. My kids are adults now and remember those days. Time moves on; make some positive memories for the family.
Awesome to watch from start to end. We have been working on our polebarn home for almost a year. The Amish Stick framed it and we are finishing the rest or contracting out. Man, it's alot of work, but worth it.
I love what you’ve done with your pole barn house. Would you mind telling me what you used to finish your concrete floors and if over time it’s something that has held up? My daughter and I are in the process of purchasing an existing Pole barn with the intention of converting it to a house. We have been homeless for a year now and are so ready to have a home again.
We used eagle armor seal. It’s help up well but can definitely tell it has worn in high traffic areas. Good luck on your big adventure! So glad y’all were able to get a place to turn into a home!
I know this is an old video, but I’ve been watching a lot of building vids on here. I bought 12 acres back in Oct of last year that I’ve slowly been clearing with my chainsaw and tractor. Eventually we wanna build something like this. My question is where do I start? Did you do most all of this yourself? Did you contract some of it out? Where did you get the floor plans? Thanks for any info you’re willing to give out!
Beautiful! How did you finish all the pine on the walls? Poly? And what ever, was it applied before the pine was put up after it was all hung? Your little helper is a real cutie.
Congrats on a fantastic job. Thanks for sharing all the very informative videos.Getting ready to start a similar project at Enid Lake, Ms. and had a question. I noticed the furnace/air handler is installed horizontally over the laundry closet. Have you had any issues with noise or vibration? Was thinking about doing a package unit outside but I think I like this solution better. Thanks
Looks great! Couple questions if you don't mind. Was the shell a kit? Why did build inside walls in 3 sections (bottom, middle, top)? What is the r value in the walls and roof? Thanks again for sharing 😊
The walls are in sections because they put up the 2x6 purlins to attach the metal too and I studded up between them. R value is 23 all the way around. Thanks for watching!
Love your channel! In One of your videos you mentioned some thing about the insurance. My husband and I want to build one of these but with a sharp attached also. Is there a problem with insurance if there’s a shop attached?
Great question. So with our insurance company they said it makes it easier to insure if it isn't connected to a shop. Why that is the case, I'm not sure. But it's worth asking your insurance agent about. Thanks for watching!
Do you think with a different floor plan a small loft could be built over some of the area? Say like 8 ft ceilings in bedroom/bath area with loft above that with higher open ceiling in Kitchen / Living area? How tall is the tallest part of the house? Sorry for all the questions on your videos but each one peaks my interest and leaves me with different questions.
You could definitely do it with a loft above. Probably have to do a little taller side walls though. My side walls are 10'. The peak of the roof is about 14'
You have to buy special nails for the ram shot tool. They (ram shot) sell a nail just for that application. I can't remember but I think I put a nail about every other stud or every 2 studs.
How far apart were the poles? 10ft? Just wondering. Great job. I'm looking into building one now. I'll need more windows and might be going a little bigger but wanting to plan something similar to this.
Congrads on your new house. I am in the building planning process and have been for awhile now. cough, cough.. haha. What is the R value on your ceiling insulation and do you wish you would have went traditional trusses vs. steel if cost was out of the picture. Curious about all the interior finishing and insulation with steel trusses. Thanks in advance, Robert.
@@LifeOnTheRidge Thanks. i have been uncertain about how to insulate the ceiling well enough and finish the ceiling with the steel trusses. Thanks for your feedback.
@@LifeOnTheRidge Thats awesome! And very encouraging! Im about two years away from my build so im trying to work out logistics now. I am self employed so that helps, but no time is a good time to not be working you know?

Thanks for all the great videos!!!
You guys did a great job and were our inspiration to tackle our own build.
Good job guys. Me and my boys are gonna build us one for a hunting cabin and hangout. This video gave a lot of good tips. Thanks.

That's awesome! Thank you very much and congrats on your new addition to your family!
Nice brother 👍 well done!
Beautiful home.
My building inspector talked me into building a pole barn. Thanks for the inspiration.
Beautiful!
Beautiful. Wishing you joy!🎈
Thanks Blue Star! Same to you!

You are right about that! Thanks for watching!!
Congratulations and an awesome build. We want to do something like this on our 31 acre farm and do it to be debt free.
Awesome job
Very nice indeed

I love your home great video Curtis I don't know if I missed it but what was the end size of the building and complete sq footage
Total living space is 1,080
Just found your channel and already loving all videos do you have a link or more info on your trusses
The trusses were custom made by the company we used. I believe they are 4/12 pitch
So is no drywall necessary before you install the knotty pine on the interior?
Nope!!
Is there anyway you could post the blue prints for the plumbing, floor plan etc?
There’s a copy of the floor plan on our socials under the post about the cost estimate
I know this is an old video, but I’ve been watching a lot of building vids on here. I bought 12 acres back in Oct of last year that I’ve slowly been clearing with my chainsaw and tractor.

Yessir. Did all of the inside work ourselves. And yes I drew my own floor plans. On a regular sheet of graph paper.
What kind of insulation is that ? Looks like its bein g held in plastics bags or is that just the vapor barrier ?
I have two different types. One has the paper backing and one has the plastic vapor barrier side
What kind of permits did you have to obtain? Thinking of doing the same..
I did not have to get any permits in my county. Be sure to check your local laws and regulations
Beautiful! How did you finish all the pine on the walls? Poly? And what ever, was it applied before the pine was put up after it was all hung? Your little helper is a real cutie.
We just put it up unfinished
Just curious. What state are you in? Getting ready to do the same in East TN. Thanks for the great videos!
North MS
This is so awesome!! I would also like to know the song at the start of the video please!!
“Glen Canyon” it’s one of the songs from UA-cam’s free audio library
Awesome thank you!!
Did you do all the interior framing ?
Yessir!
I have a question do u put the plumbing in before the concrete ?? I’m getting a kit n doing my house my self
Yes, rough plumbing before concrete. Good luck on your build!! 👍
You’re opinion what was the hardest part or parts to this build ?
Definitely putting the tin on the ceiling. Working above your head is no fun!

No issues so far!! I had considered a package unit as well but my HVAC guy thought this would work better. Appreciate ya watching!
What state do you live in that allows for no footings or concrete cast around the posts?
The posts are set in concrete
Looks great! Couple questions if you don't mind. Was the shell a kit? Why did build inside walls in 3 sections (bottom, middle, top)? What is the r value in the walls and roof? Thanks again for sharing 😊

@@LifeOnTheRidge Thanks for the quick response 👍. One more question. Is there any venting in the roof or is it sealed?
I vented everything through the side walls instead of the roof (less chance of roof leak this way)
Was this a kit?
It was a custom kit. I told the company what I wanted and they fabricated it

A very impressive job all around!👏🏻👍🏻💪🏻🙏🏻
How did you secure your wall bottom plates to the concrete floor?
I used a ram shot
Thank you!👍🏻
What size nails and what spacing do you recommend Sir?
You have to buy special nails for the ram shot tool. They (ram shot) sell a nail just for that application. I can't remember but I think I put a nail about every other stud or every 2 studs.
Any idea if this would be legal in Florida? We have pole barn like this but not sure about using it for a residence. Beautiful job :)
What size barn did you go with?
30x36
What size is the barn
Living portion is 30x36
How did you fasten the tin to the ceiling? I can't see screws or nails.
I used truss screws. They blend in very well
How wide is your kitchen/ living room
18x36
What size are those trusses an how far they spread apart looking to do the same thing
Not sure of the size? They are 12ft apart
& cost average ?
I have a couple of cost estimate videos that will answer your question!
How far apart were the poles? 10ft? Just wondering. Great job. I'm looking into building one now. I'll need more windows and might be going a little bigger but wanting to plan something similar to this.
These are 12ft apart

R value in ceiling and walls is R23. I don't think I would have done anything differently
@@LifeOnTheRidge Thanks. i have been uncertain about how to insulate the ceiling well enough and finish the ceiling with the steel trusses. Thanks for your feedback.
I wish I was able to have more R value in the ceiling but I had limited space to work with. Having an attic space would help with this
How deep did the piers have to go?
I believe they are around 3 ft deep
What size posts did you use?
6x6
Did you have a footer dug by them ?
no we didn't have a footer dug around the perimeter. Didn't see the need since the weight of the building actually rests on the posts.
@@LifeOnTheRidge how are the posts set?
What makes this a pole barn house? I’m a beginner, trying to understand different explanations i hear.
It’s built with posts and trusses. The posts carry the load of the building.
Do you know of any federal grants that could be used to fund building a barn on rural property? Thanks!
I don’t. Sorry I’m not much help. Thanks for the question!
How long did it take from start to finish?
just under 6 months
@@LifeOnTheRidge Did you have a job as well or were you on it full time? Im assuming you were on it full time
@cooper8318 yes! I worked a full time job while building the house full time
@@LifeOnTheRidge Thats awesome! And very encouraging! Im about two years away from my build so im trying to work out logistics now. I am self employed so that helps, but no time is a good time to not be working you know?

65k. I have a couple of cost videos that I think you would find helpful. Check out the pole barn house playlist
