  • I've had the KTM890R for just over 2 weeks and these are my thoughts of the good and not so good.
    PLEASE NOTE THE REAR TYRE PRESSURE AS RECOMMENDED IN THE MANUAL IS 36 psi MINE HAD BEEN SET TO 40psi BY THE KTM TECHNICIAN AND I DIDN’T CHECK THE MANUAL !! THIS WAS POINTED OUT TO ME BY A VIEWER AND I HAVE CHANGED THE REAR PRESSURE . NEVER ASSUME !
    I talk about the fuel tank opening the wrong way. I am highlighting the point that if you want to put a mounting ring for a tank bag, ie sw motech etc then the open end of the mounting ring has to go on the other way, which could cause access problems ....
    Please follow the link below to vlog 1, which then has all the links to the other series of vlogs of my KTM ownership.

    quickshifter is a bit trippy......when i first got it i kept letting off the gas to shift (no clutch) and was really learching forward (abruptly).....I finally just left throttle on and shifts were smooth as butter, so hard to change a style of riding. but yeah dont change throttle even in low rpm and shift.....mine was smooth as silk....only have like 50 miles on mine and still learning the bike.....messing with suspension settings now to get more compliance on street.....

    Agree on suspension. Once you set it for your roads the bike is more enjoyable. It’s really bumpy on my street for 2 miles so I have standard in front and comfort in rear. Had comfort comfort.but front was too soft on twisties. Wait till you have your first service and can use full rev range, will be even more fun. Will try your fueling tip if I detect an issue. Thanks for the tip. Isn’t solo rear psi suggested at 36? 40 s33ms high.

      Yup you’re correct 👍 just checked pdf manual . This is what happens when you assume the technician that PDI’d the machine before handover set everything correctly and knew best !!! I’ll drop the rear 4psi and re-assess the ride and give the technician some advice ! Definitely looking forward to the ride post first service 🤪 thanks .
      Updated : fortunately didn’t need to adjust any suspension settings and didn’t notice any difference in the ride with correct psi set 👍

    Keep the updates coming. Run 32f 34r on mine. Still not happy with suspension yet, Seems soft on front under hard braking and too hard on rear over bumps in the road. Will ask dealer when i take it for 1st service.

    Your not supposed to use the quickshifter while running in (ktm advised) my dealer has not enabled mine til 1st service. Was also told the oil in it is full spec from start not a lesser mineral oil. Ive not experienced any lumpyness really, done 456 at mo had for 2 weeks thought the fuel was brilliant been riding upto 70/80 mph and odd blast upto 6000 rpm but been kind and kept first few hundred under 4500 rpm and been averaging 74 mpg!!
    Agree the best fun and handling ive had for years, at 57 ive fell in love again ...what a tool...enjoy your bike and hope all goes well for you

    The oil they are going to put in at the first service must be very good stuff if it's going to stop the rough, noisy engine and improve the gearbox and quickshifter.

    • @gsd32i
      @gsd32i  3 роки тому +1

      😂 it’s amazing what other KTM owners put on media platforms suggesting this ! Reality is it’s a KTM and they are noisy from cold , plain and simple ! Oh how I wished the oil would change this .Jumping off my Africa Twin and back onto the KTM just highlights this. Gearbox after nearly 1000 miles is smooth . Reality , oil makes sod all difference!! Oh well, but smile definitely gets bigger 😊

    Yeah had my suspicion set by FTR,interestingly they added a few spacers to the front forks and then set it up as apparently the bike sits on its nose, now its sitting flatter and the suspension is working more evenly,hard to believe the ride could improve but now i can take serious liberties in the bends,on the down side that sprocket gasket is definitely leaking clear oil and apparently it has only been addressed over the last few months so keep them pealed,showing my age now!!!! 🤦🏼‍♂️

    • @gsd32i
      @gsd32i  3 роки тому

      I did lower the preload on the rear as the bike was steering too quick for me into the bends , which I guess has a similar effect to what you’ve had done . Fingers crossed for the sprocket leak on mine then , Feb 2021 build date . It has the right amount of power and I am suitably impressed at its low down grunt . Lots of older riders on the uk KTM forum !

      @@richardgowers7659 yup anything more is just pub talk !! I’ve had more fun on this little thing than I have done in years . 200 hp these days on the road is basically crazy and the easiest way to go to jail .... but 120 horses in a small frame ... well that’s a different ball game . This has more power than my first big bike back in the day in 1986 , when I bought a new Red and silver gpz900R .... may go out for a spin later if it’s not raining 🌧 . Have fun on the track day 🤪

    I bought a 890 duke R last week. At 275 miles the display cluster has gone wacky! It's visible but the every thing that should be white is now a blue -green and much dimmer. When you hit a bump it will get darker too.I have set the fork adjuster to the softest positions and it is still brutally hard when hitting bumps. I think the may be the reason for the instrument display going bad?
    I'm afraid my gut feeling was right about KTM quality! I have never had a problem with all the Japanese bike that I own some for over 15 years!

    • @gsd32i
      @gsd32i  2 роки тому

      Oh no ! I dialled the front compression way down and rebound to and did the same with the rear . Ride is very plush . Was it a 2021 build ? Taking mine to Wales this week doing Snowdonia and Brecon Beacons . My Africa Twin is on standby just in case . Possibly a connection come away slightly ? I know what you mean ref build quality though . My Honda gets an A from me and the KTM a B . I have used ACF 50 on both though . Hope u get it sorted 🤞

      Hi. It looks like the chain on mine was set too tight from when it left the showroom as when i got it back from its first service the quick shifter was still crap and the technician had checked the QS and it didn't need recalibration. In my videos i say that i have turned the shifter off as it was not very smooth. Anyway i have adjusted the chain as per the KTM manual and it was clearly obvious that the chain had been set too tight . It should be 2-5mm from the underside of the swingarm and mine was 12mm+!! Surprise surprise the quick shifter is so much better and i can leave it switched on now!! Brilliant.

      Hi. Im just about to trade my 790 in (which i absolutely love) for the 890r. Are you happy with the quickshift and blipper now please? Its the main things I love about the 790 it makes it such a joy to ride! Im 16 stone though and when pushing on round hilly north yorkshire roads, the suspension on the 790 just doesnt manage! Main reason for swapping is suspension and brakes. Thanks in advance.

      @@stuartcoopalnd6975 hi . Funnily enough I’ve just been out on my 890R having some fun and the quick shifter is now fine . Just putting a video together . Basically the chain had been set too tight by the dealer (unless I’ve misread the pdf manual ) and I explained that I had turned the QS off as it was too clunky when it went in for its first service . It came back still clunky although they had checked it as per the 1st service manual . Out of a bit of frustration I checked the chain and it was too tight ! Adjusted it as per the pdf manual on the paddock stand in neutral blah blah blah and set it to be within the 2-5mm range and now it’s much much better . Happy chap now . 🤦‍♂️

    Do people actually buy sport bikes etc. aand not set the suspension. I have bought 4 bikes new and the first thing I do before I even ride home for the first time, is set the suspension, once home I change the oil to a semi synthetic and go through every nut and bolt and check for torque, then wipe entire bike down with wd 40.

      Derek clearly they do ! No excuse these days . I have less than Malo to roads and have gone the softer side on the suspension and the bike is just a joy to ride . I have to say it is only recently that I have delved into the so called mysterious world of suspension. Pretty easy once you have looked at UA-cam agree 100% set suspension up to how you ride and where you ride .👍

      Hi Peter, I live down in Jersey, so up and down the gearbox. First service due on Tuesday at 620 miles, currently doing approx 130 miles until fuel low indication comes on and that then means about 25-30 until nothing left from the 14 litre tank. 150-55 miles at this time for me . so 11.3 miles per litre.

    The oil in it from new is nothing special and you should get it out very quickly - like right after you buy it and ride it home ! It's full of the metals from a new engine and depending on the manufacturer could be really dirty from the factory.
