This is hydro-mechanical cam chain tensioner. The oil pressure is what loads up the piston inside the CCT and then maintains the pressure thereby making it maintenance free, basically like hydraulic tappet.
Good video, and answered my question about needing to set the motor at TDC before changing the tensioner, some have commented on forums you need to, others not, so some confusion exists. Mines not so noisy, but something to bear in mind for the future I feel.
i did this on my 2023 norden 901, got the tensioner from Rottweiler in California, ordered on a Monday it was in the bike on the Thursday afternoon, Im in the UK so was impressive. Just took old one out and put new one in as here, silent now.
When you installed your's did you set your engine to TDC? I just ordered one from Rottweiler, so want to make sure i get full instruction before installing. Thx
@@paultaylorduke have u installed it on the bike, if so, how’s it holding up? I’d like to do this too but I use my bike as a daily commuter so don’t wanna risk anything 😂
How's the bike now, a good 9months since you posted the video, have you encountered any other issues, and how many Mike's have you done since you changed it.
I just bought a 2023 Duke 890 R with only 9K kms. It is imaculate and yet it sounds like a sewing machine which, as someone who loves the CBR1000RR turbine sound of an inline four, sounds so bad as to have me thinking I made a big mistake with the purchase. I haven't ridden the bike more than 10 kms yet and it does have a stock exhaust which accentuates the engine sound. Watching this video it seems like I need to replace the same tensioner. Hopefully this will help the engine and the sound. Thoughts?
@@sadeqalbana There is a screw on the right side of the engine at the level of the oil window. You have to rotate counter-clockwise the engine manually until you see a notch.
Some people are saying you should have only done this at TDC but... ask yourself why.. does the engine only start up on TDC? This is a manual cam chain tensioner so I don't see a problem doing it like you did.. plus the fact we literally just watched you do it and it was fine
Awesome, do more 890R vids as you run into them. My 890 Just went into the shop with a Pulser Coil, a radiator thermostat, and ignition cover gasket, problem, that all started with my battery dying. (according to ktm anyway) They're charging 6 hours of labor for it, which comes out to be about 260USD in labor.
If the hydraulic tensioner isnt doing the job its likely down to low oil pressure. Changing the tensioner is a short term fix, and I suspect the low oil pressure will cause your cams to wear prematurely as is the case on thousands of these bikes.
Not correct in all cases. Since it's hydraulic and designed to work well in operating temperatures, you first need to build the correct oil pressure which is not reached at a cold start. I read that the optimal pressure is at 6000rpm. My 890R is also noisy untill warm, or untill it reached somewhere around that rpm
if the stock tensioner gets quite when its warm or after sometimes then its working correctly. The reasons its noisy because its allow more initial slack than this dirttrick to prevent premature wear on the timing chain. Pirate Racing from Germany explained this very well
Hello. I'm also riding the 890DUKE R. I bought Dirt Tricks TC-3 by watching your video. I exchanged the tensioner today, but the sound got louder! Do you know why?
why is that KTM and other manufactures are unable to make simple mechanical devices reliable that have been engineered for very many years and fit them to their machines, this is not cutting edge technology, KTM make very dynamic bikes no argument but their basic engineering choices sometimes really make me scratch my head WTF! also alas on occasion ride in aeroplanes in my bike kit whilst my bike rides on the back of a truck, just aint good enough for me anymore.

@Bryan Spears.. I may have lost it.. repeated the vid a couple of times.. where can i get the replacement tensioner? Did he replace the whole tensioner and added a spring?
It depends, if the tensioner is too loose, it has a chance that the cam chain would slip 1-2 tooth while cold start, and damage values in combustion chamber.
I love how Ktm transforms lots of people into a mechanic ❤brilliant
It's true , unfortunately .... 😢🧡🧡🧡
So called, buy one get one free, one bike free motorcycle doctor yourself, 390 is even stinker. 😂

Good info.BTW,Yoshimura will replace a revised mid pipe with a heel guard at no charge.I contacted them and replaced with no hassle.

Hi great video..where can I buy that tensioner?? Thank you

I second this.
Would like to hear how this is holding up.
Tractor sounds galore right now 😁
I wonder if the loose chain tensioner causes the cams to wear quicker.

before removing the cam chain tensioner do you need to put it on TDC? thanks
where you can buy this ?
How did this last??????
Interesting -- usually with CCT you need to rotate the engine to TDC before removing the tensioners...
how can you tell that the piston is at TDC?

Any feedback about the KTM Duke 890 timing chain tensioner? is it worth it?
Is there a way I can send you a video of my 890? See if this is what I need
Awesome thanks. Ordering now

was the noisy sound only at cold starts or does it even sound like this when its warmed up?

@Bryan Spears.. I may have lost it.. repeated the vid a couple of times.. where can i get the replacement tensioner?
Did he replace the whole tensioner and added a spring?
is dangerous for the bike to ride with this sound?

How is it holding up after the install?
Several track days in and she sounds perfect.

what a disgrace for my country to sell such low quality bikes for such a high price. i hear many things about ktm and most are not good..
KTM has become synonym for worst most unreliable motorcycle ever
its noisy cause its not electric 🤪
