  • It's never wise to mess with success. That said, the folks at Subaru have demonstrated how smart they are with the second-generation Crosstrek. It gets the refinement of the newest Impreza and the familiarity of the first Crosstrek. Tom Voelk drives a mid-tier Premium model with manual transmission.

The thought of anyone cross-shopping a crosstrek with a land rover is hilarious. This thing will probably make it to at least 200k without an issue, while the land rover will break down on its way back from the dealership.

Traded my wrx for it too! Less is more for me. Everyone thinks the trek 2.0l boxer engine is slow, I disagree! Thats coming from a previous wrx owner... Its not a bullet, but once the engine break-in is complete, it wakes up nicely! (Momentum) Simply a all-terrain Beast!

You had me until "not going turbo". This powerplant is pedestrian, and makes what could be a very fun car into super bland flavorless cheese. The 190hp 1.6T would have given this enough oomph to be a true pleasure to row the gears through, instead of an exercise in patience. Heck, it'd be safer too, as this is a disaster waiting to happen on Austin's notoriously short highway entrance ramps.

Hi ....I am experiencing ongoing radio / bluetooth problems. I started a lease in feb 2018, put down a big deposit....once the car is warmed up....the whole system goes haywire.....it is unusable....cant use radio or bluetooth, maps....nothing...the screens just rotate through.....buttons dont work...
my local dealer has taken it in and tried to fix it....replaced the whole radio system two times, replaced the usb cable ports..... the can't figure it out..... yet i still have this car that is not fully functioning and for which i am paying full lease fees! I am infuriated. they've told me to go to subaru canada. I can't get through to them on their customer service line.... this has been ongoing for 10 months!!!!!
    any suggestions?

I think it's important to be more informative about Subaru's AWD systems. He covered the manual system well, but the CVT system... not really. The Subaru system that comes paired with CVT cars provides a 60/50 front/rear torque split. This helps it be a bit more predictable in regular (dry pavement) conditions and makes use of the extra weight over the front wheels that provide traction. However, when slippage is detected by sensors or when X-Mode is activated, the system switches to a 50/50 torque split. Because both axles are open diffs, the cars are equipped with X-Mode, which uses the traction control system (brakes) to halt the individual wheels that are slipping, sending more torque to the other wheel on that same axle. However, the system is unfortunately not equipped with low gear mimicking and cannot start in higher gear in sand or snow. It also cannot send more than 60% of torque to the front axle, nor more than 50% to the rear axle, even if the other one is slipping. That makes this system rather rudimentary, especially when there's so little of torque to go around in the Crosstrek.
For contrast, the Ford's Intelligent AWD/4WD system and Jeep's Active Drive (I or II) can send up to 100% of the torque to either front or rear axle or anywhere in between, depending on where the traction is (or isn't.)
In a car that has power a plenty, that's not an issue. The wheels with grip will still get enough oomph to get you going. Unfortunately, in a car that is low on power, that may not be enough.

Needs an interior makeover, a bigger screen, standard eye-sight and rear camera safety; add a plug-in hybrid that gets 45 EV miles, for under $30k, and I might consider it. What I really want is a Honda HR-EV with 200 miles of range and a full suite of safety features for under $33k. Maybe VW or Kia/Hyundai will deliver it first. I won't wait for a Model Y at $50k, however, but I would at $39k.

    • @DrivenCarReviews

Well... this is complicated. I don't generally like CVTs but I personally feel it's the tranny to go with in this car. I was just talking to some fellow auto writers today and they said the same thing. I'm not the kind of driver that insists all cars have manual transmissions and I don't find the manual to be overly engaging.

My mom has one of these. Very nice. We always had Subaru's in our family. But, I can't get one anymore. They are all CVT basically. :( No CVT for me! Fine for a mom-mobile, but, Subaru's are supposed to be tough and rugged. Not good for real drivers who will go camping, up mountain passes, etc.. Manual is always an option. I've had 5 manuals in my life. Although I would love a manual car again, it simply isn't an option with how often I have friends or family drive my car. I road tripped from Washington DC to San Diego and back; a few times. Can't do all that driving alone, and my road trip companions don't drive manual. Sorry Subaru, I may never own another again; unless you get proper automatic transmissions again... I've heard sales in Australia have gone way down ever since they started using only CVT's. Listen to your buyers and give us a good option!

    • @27Zangle

    • @39Hundred

Earthling1984 Why all the hate for CVTs? Every automaker is switching to CVTs. In the future, everyone will have them. Even Bugatti is switching to CVT by 2020.

    • @BoopSnoot
      @BoopSnoot 6 років тому

CVTs are the future, and are getting better every year. I want a 6-speed as it is so much more engaging and thus fun, but you can't beat infinite gearing of a CVT. People just need to get over engines staying at sustained peak horsepower during hard acceleration. The big problem isn't the CVT though, its the sad excuse of an engine. The least they could have done is mirrored VW and put a 170hp engine under the hood. Their 190hp 1.6T would have been amazing, but as it is, its just... well... sad.

Any word via the grapevine when Subaru will put the Outback on the new global platform chasis? The 2018 Outback has some new tech, but is otherwise not really very different from the old one. Also, how does this new platform benefit the new Crosstrek versus the previous model? Is it better ride quality they were seeking, better handling, better steering or something else? Thanks, very good review as always.
