I just acquired a 2018 Crosstrek after trading in my 2015 Crosstrek for it, and there's only one point in this video I would disagree with. That point is that I absolutely find thrills in driving my new car. However, they are different thrills from the ones I used to find when I had a Mustang GT or my Mazda Miata. What I find thrilling in the Crosstrek is seeing a dirt road and being able to say, "Hey, let's see what's down that way!" instead of just glancing wistfully as I drive by. I was quite thrilled to be able to drive my 2015 right out onto the beach at the cape on Hatteras Island instead of having to park on the pavement and trudge through the hot sand. I'm also very thrilled every time I can look back on a fun day of driving through the country roads (paved and dirt) of West Virginia and then realize I still have gas left in the tank :D Great video summary of the Crosstrek, thanks for sharing it :)
christopher sigmund Hey, I wanted to buy a Crosstrek at the beginning of the 2019. So how do you feel about driving the Crosstrek on an incline road ? I mean when you drive the car to climb on a montain, do you feel the engine shivering ? Because I really enjoy going roadtrip in the U.S, so I really care about the performance of the engine when it climbs on a high mountain. I’m driving a 2014 Honda Civic, and whenever I drive the car on a high mountain, I cannot reach 60 mph because the engine is weak and I have the feeling if I push the pedal to 60 mph or over, the engine would explode because of the loud noise from the hood. So could you give me some reviews about the 2018 Crosstrek on that criteria ? Thank you
@@zacharyreynolds4303 Yeah, fast or quick are relative. A RAV4Prime is about as quick 0-60MPH as a GTO Judge or a Testarossa. It's not even considered "quick" these days. A new Camry can outcorner or outbrake many performance cars from the 90s, yet it's considered "bland" these days.
I already liked the Crosstrek. The 2018 just seems like an amazing package. If I was buying a new practical car in the next year, this would be it. Bravo Subaru.
Thanks for the review. I just bought a 2020 6sp MT Premium Crosstrek and I couldn't have said it better. This is a great daily driver, having the manual was a highlight for me, it gives you that much more connection to the driving experience and with the 4 wheel drive, cargo capacity, 27-30 MPG and 5 star safety rating for under $27,000 all in...it's easily one of the best values anywhere.
+ron s agreed! It's a massive improvement. The only sound system (and now the Crosstrek) I've listened to in a Subaru and been impressed. Glad they addressed that area!
I just purchased my 2018 Crosstrek with 53k miles on it, felt like a brand new vehicle. Started to adjust to my driving habits and now fits me like a glove. The acceleration is decent and good enough for me to safely pass anyone on the highway or merge onto a fast paced highway easily. It’s comfortable and quiet. I am not sure what you mean by there’s no excitement with the way it drives, it drives just fine. We are not at Le Mans 😑🤣
The eternal dilemma of car buying - wait for the unproven, next year generation with better tech; or buy the previous generation with proven components.
While I agree with the sentiment, remember that the Crosstrek is based on the Impreza which has been out for nearly a year now. Given that the chassis and technology have had that time to work out any issues, I'd have no problem getting one of the first Crosstreks to hit dealer floors.
+Flame Beats I had one of the very first Xbox 360's (it was from the second wave released to stores) and somehow it still works just fine today! My original Xbox died in a lightning storm though. :(
Flame Beats I did that with my mountain bike. It turns out that the frames snaps and there was no warranty. So it helps waiting a year or two after a major redesign.
No such car buying dilemma exist if you are able to learn how to fix what you break. You just buy a car that doesn't need a certified tech with a supercomputer for diagnosis and then you don't buy another car for 40 years.
I just purchased a 2023 Crosstrek Limited, which is the final year that the 2nd gen Crosstrek will be built. The larger 2.5L engine with 30 additional horsepower and torque which became available on the Sport and Limited trims starting in 2021 really helped the Crosstrek. Great cars.
AVO makes a kick butt kits for the boxer 4 engine. I have the AVO stage two kit on my Scion FRS and more then doubled my horse power. Here is a link for information: www.avoturbo.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=257:subaru-crosstrek-xv-turbocharger-kit&catid=3:general-news
Yeah, back in the mid 2000's in the USA, EVERY Subaru model could be had with a turbocharged boxer engine AND manual transmission. I believe 2005 was the last model year for that. Models include the Outback 2.5XT, Forester 2.5XT, Baja Turbo, Legacy 2.5GT, and of course, the Impreza WRX. The biggest difference was, every turbo engine was the EJ255 except for the WRX which had the EJ205.
I picked up a Sunshine orange '18 about 3 weeks ago. I'm 6'7" and absolutely amazed at how I fit in the front seat. My last ride was a 4 cyl automatic (had to be auto or I grinded my shins into the firewall!) '97 Wrangler, so this Crosstrek is a roomy speed demon compared to my Jeep! Have to say I love your videos. Keep it up man! Thanks.
Europe probably doesnt buy into the whole AWD as a necessity thing and likely means Subaru's market share is much smaller than in the US. Limiting options and features means they can get a car to market for less to increase profit margins.
EinChris75 it's a conspiracy, theres a plan to make everyone in the world drive automatics before pushing the autonomous cars...sleep with your eyes open and also keep your blinds opened 🙃🙃😵😵😵
The 2nd gen fits bigger tires. It's available with a 2.5L now. It has a temp gauge now. It lost the rear bumper cutout for a foglight or hitch. It still doesn't offer the manny-tranny with a sunroof...or the powerful motor. It still can't "lock" the center diff. Until I can get an affordable replacement at any autoparts store, I don't want factory LED lights.
So Better trans Better engine Better chassis Better suspension Better tech Sounds like you should trade up Lel for not being a sports car you seemed to enjoy this one alot
I have the Premium trim 2018 Crosstrek. Always really wanted one, test drove one in early 2016 and it didn't end up working out. Bought my 2018, then, last August after my mom totaled her Forester and was amazingly protected from any major injury. I have about 6500 miles on it now and I am loving it. Great handling, fuel economy and infotainment, just an all around fantastic car. Hoping I can keep it (problem free) for years to come.
Coming up next. Engineering Explained adds turbo charger and upgrades suspension components of his 2016 Crosstrek to make it better than the 2018 model.
Thanks for the informative and objective review. We bought a 2016 Crosstrek on an impulse buy, and ended up LOVING it! Like it so much, even though the 2018 is improved in many ways, no way we could trade it in on a new one.
Makes sense. Even though the Outback has the slightly more powerful engine, the Crosstrek is 400-500 LBS lighter.. that much weight definitely makes a difference..
Mike Calderon I did the same thing. I absolutely love my 2018 Crosstrek w/6-speed manual. Thanks EE for the great review, this is going to help me explain exactly why I opted for it.
Tucsonan Dude shifter feels solid. Occasionally getting into reverse is just a bit stiff, but that's too be expected. Transitions during acceleration are as smooth as can be
I love the way you approached this review. Most reviews of this type car I see are done by people (including you) that drive sports cars or cars verging on super cars etc. Then they expect every car/crossover/suv to have the most sporty transmission, tightest stearing, and able to throw the back of the car out through every corner... You approach this as the car it is, "it can get up to speed easily to get on the highway and overtake, but it's not an exciting drive". And I appreciated how you almost mocked it at the end. No one buys a crosstrek to drag race their friends haha
I dont understand why they dont offer the Crosstrak as a manual in Europe.. People here dont like automatics, yet they refuse to give us this existing transmission.
Xzstnce EU emissions standards are so strict it's bordering on a joke. See things like Diesel Gate. So many models are moving to CVTs and Start/Stop systems to improve emissions for congestion charges and fleet fuel economy statistics. If it wasn't for the Prius, Toyota would be screwed, as they are the last of the big automakers to adopt wide spread direct injection. So almost all of their standard models are CVT with Start/Stop. It's just the sign of the times thanks to obnoxious environmental regulations.
Well at least the crosstrek is not boring, it’s because it’s a manual and it will be even more thrilling if you make it an off roader with off road tires and go off roading and camping
As someone with a 2016 Impreza, I was especially interested in hearing _your_ opinion about this car, because most reviewers just focus on how nice everything looks, the better sound system, and how its all based on the new global platform. They don't say anything else that's really useful when compared to previous years, especially regarding the manual. I feel a little bit resentful that I don't have the 2017 model.
Maria Smith - unless you want to shift gears yourself with a proper 3-pedal manual transmission. Don't get me wrong, I've lived with a Subaru that was equipped with Eyesight for a month. Did I love it? Absolutely. Would I want to daily drive it? Hell no. I'd reserve such a feature for a road trip vehicle, not my daily driven vehicle, where it has the potential to diminish my driving skills.
I traded up from a Kia Forte and have absolutely zero regrets. I was getting 38 mpg in the forte and I get 34 in my crosstrek. I love the storage capacity and safety and the way it drives.
Wait. Removed manual from Europe but it's still available in America, which is notorious for their "lack of" manual driving skills? - I don't understand, Subaru... Edit: I have to edit this. In Switzerland you can get the 6 gear manual transmission if you get the 2.0i or 2.0d engine. Probably because Subaru is quite successfully selling their cars there? Well I know that Subarus are popular there for sure. So my guess is it's only for selected countries?
Europe probably doesnt buy into the whole AWD as a necessity thing and likely means Subaru's market share is much smaller than in the US. Limiting options and features means they can get a car to market for less to increase profit margins.
Nope, I was wrong: was looking at the 2017 model, not the 2018 //I'm not sure, but I think here in Italy you can get this model with the 2 liters engine, 6 gears manual transmission. It's the diesel version though. Or at least this is how it's advertised.
We bought the 2018 Crosstrek in the cool grey khaki for my wife back in the summer of 2018 with the mid tier upgrade package. No complaints so far my wife loves the car.
The only reason I've not upgraded my 2011 Legacy is Subaru stopped offering higher trim packages with the manual transmission. I really don't understand why they do that...
I guess there is not enough demand for a fully loaded car with a manual trannie...but just enough to keep the option available, but to minimize risk...keep them with basic packages.
It’s a self fulfilling prophecy. They make people choose between nice upgrades or a manual making the small percent that like manuals pick the upgrades instead. Which further brings down the sales.
This is the review I have been looking for! My new commute will be roughly 130 miles round trip so I have been heavily researching the subaru lineup and have been debating between the Legacy and Crosstrek. This video may have made my decision for me.
+Engineering Explained - I would like to see a comparison to the VW Golf Alltrack. It has a much more peppy engine that is hard to not like. The Subaru 2.0 N/A is so underwhelming to the point of poking my eyes out. I drove it for 5 minutes and returned it to the dealer and was like not a chance in the world you could sell that to me. Subaru: 152 hp, 145 lb tq - 33 mpg highway VW Golf Alltrack: 170 hp, 199 lb tq - 32 mpg highway Both AWD, both have raised suspensions over their sibling variants. Both have automatics and manual transmission options. For me personally, the new Gen 3 1.8 TSI engine found in the VW is far superior to the new 2.0 N/A engine in the Subaru line-up. And both use their company's new global chassis. Please do a comparison video!
Engineering Explained I am happy Subaru has included a larger gas tank. I feel like too many auto makers have shrunk gas tanks as efficiency has improved, especially in smaller cars. There is something to be said about being able to fill up less when on long road trips.
I bought a new 2018 Subaru XV (Crosstrek) a month ago after much review watching/reading and test drives and I'm very happy I did. The interior is spacious and comfortable. Living here in Sydney, Australia our roads are very average so the ride in the Subaru is comfortable. Acceleration is more than adequate in city/suburban settings and the steering is light, responsive and confident. The CV transmission (we don't have the manual option but there are paddles if you're into that) is solid though tends to need high revs for a change in the upper gears. I've recently taken it out onto motorways and highways that included significantly steep inclined mountain climbs and, even though it had to work at it, the Subaru did keep up with other cars doing 100+ kph but I was conscious of not letting the revs go too high for the first 1,000km of its life. Everything worked well - the sat. nav., the music system, the a/c, lane departure (which can be turned off), voice recognition and brakes. I haven't used the cruise control yet as I'm wanting a change in speeds and revs to help the engine settle in. Another trip outside the city limits also had the same results and the XV (Crosstrek) had a respectable 6L/100km fuel economy.
I have the 2018 and the best way I can describe it is that it is a very good car and does everything fantastically. Nothing more. It's the perfect size, height, usability, mpg (roughly 26 average). I love it, I don't plan on trading it for anything in a while unless something changes drastically like a turbo model or a 2.5 sport engine.
I've had my '18 for a month. Given that I wanted a manual, I went with the premium, and therefore couldn't get the HK audio. I did get the Rockford Fosgate upgrade, and it does sound very good.
Had anyone noticed that the text that appears on the video (top left) for each improvement indicates 6. infotainment/audio 4:48 and also 9. infotainment/audio 6:46.
mericle123 I have not driven through snow yet. But from what I’ve seen on UA-cam is that it can do extremely well and I think Impreza is better looking for the 2017 year instead of the new cross trek
I just got a new 2018 pearl white crosstrek premium and I really like the smooth suspension and the stereo system. So far loving the car. Previous car 2007 Mazda CX7 awd.
Europe probably doesnt buy into the whole AWD as a necessity thing and likely means Subaru's market share is much smaller than in the US. Limiting options and features means they can get a car to market for less to increase profit margins.
I wish that the Duster was available in the US (along with such vehicles as the Lada Niva, yeah I'm weird). Those likely succeed in the EU market due to taxes and production/shipping costs to get it to those shores. Subaru, being a small company, probably cannot afford to build new facilities or shipping routes to get those cars their cost effectively.
Bought my "18 XV (= Crosstrek) a couple of months ago. I absolutely love it! Awesome vehicle. Not super powerful but it's got all you need, especially if you want to avoid speeding fines. It handles better on 225/65/18 tyres than my previous 2006 Liberty (= Legacy) 3.0R on 215/45/17s, and despite a lot less power, is more fun to drive around town.
plasma246 unfortunately, yes, as well as the demise of large naturally aspirated engines and weird-but-cool stuff like windy windows and 5-cylinder engines, not to mention that everything is so heavy nowadays.
With V6 engines' ability to output the same or more horse power than V8 rivals, why is that an issue? When my 2.0T can outperform a V8 from decades ago, is there really a reason for V8s on everyday cars?
SalveMonesvol Torque, fuel economy, and emissions. The S2000 has no low end torque for easy maneuvering around traffic, gets horrendous fuel economy given its 2.0L (or 2.2) displacement, and is certainly not designated a PZEV. I should know...I own both. The Subaru may not be powerful but given how efficient it is, it doesn't do bad at all. The S2000 gets away with low torque because who cares if you need to wring it out? That's its purpose.
Because it only takes about 60hp to race between stop lights and 20hp to cruise the interstate highways, which is what 99% of drivers do. 200hp is fun but if you gotta scream to 6000rpm to get it, you're not really gonna be doing that except maybe on the merging ramps. In short, everyone overestimates their *need* for horsepower.
I love my 2016, too. Hope I can avoid temptation for a couple of years at least! Great review. Your point of view is unique in the automotive review world, and totally aligns with mine.
I had a 2013 Crosstrek. I loved the ground clearance, AWD system, and versatility. However, it was the SLOWEST vehicle I have ever driven and my first car was a 1991 Mustang LX with the punitive 2.3L engine which didn't set the bar high. I had the replace the driver side axle at 69K miles and the passenger at 73K. It burned a quart and a half of oil every 5000 miles. The bluetooth phone connection was AWEFUL and no one could hear me over the background noise when I attempted to us it. The MPG was amazing for an AWD car, my highest average was 36mpg with the average hovering in the 32mpg range. The rear had started to get round right before I traded it at 122K miles. I don't know what the problem was as I wanted rid of it before I had to address it. I think it is the ideal daily driver for anyone in a snowy state, I just wish it had more power and I hope Subaru has fixed the issues I experienced with mine.
I might make mine into a Crosstrek WRX or STI but I don't know if it'll mess with my Eyesight system. But I'd need mess with the wiring, probably replace the tranny and find a rebuilt WRX or STI motor and a shop that could do it all. Mess with the exhaust, too. Just want to confuse Mustangs when I blast past with that boxer engine making it's dinky little pop noise.
Problem is, you can't just install the motor. You need a better transmission, better axles, stronger cv joints etc, which may mean stronger mounting points and frame reinforcements... and pretty soon you have yourself a crosstrek that is the same weight and power as one of the larger models they already sell. There is no such thing as a free lunch.
Here's my "beef" with Subaru; I love them.. Love my forester 6m (2015). However; Subaru falls "flat" with their engines (pun intended). Good engines; decent power. However; if Subaru can offer a 2.0 non turbo in the cross trek, why not offer a "performance" version with the WRX 2.0 turbo? As well, why offer a 2.5 170 hp in the Forester and then offer the 2.0 as the only engine options? Subaru needs a "midrange" flat 4 that is normally aspirated (for fuel mileage) yet puts out around 200 hp.
They need to learn from Ford. The new 2020 Ford Escape with 250hp/275ftlbs, AWD, a factory tow package w/ 3.Klbs tow rating, LED lighting, 200lbs lighter and more aerdynamic, HUD and full LCD instrument cluster, and even the rear seats recline.
They don't have the demand for it as what they have is wildly popular. Subaru North America said they'd consider it if they ever needed to do it to bolster sales, not before.
@@af4237 Its a huge mistake, as image matters. The image of the Mustang for example is massively boosted by the availability of the Mustang GT, Bullitt, and GT500, even if the majority of sales are the ecoboost. It simply gives the body street cred. Subarus are earning a reputation for being glacial appliances devoid of fun-factor, and that's not a good thing. So even if its a loss leader, offer the XT trim even if it only makes 5% of sales. It will also get reviewers like Car and Driver and others to give it rave reviews and drool all over it, which will get people interested in the chassis that may settle for the low power engine.
Just got my 2018 Crosstrek with a 6 speed manual. Much agreed with sir Jason, its a much quieter, more efficient car, and better riding car. It could use a bit more power, but it's really not a deal breaker for me. If anything, its part of the cars charm
woohunter1 it's been done before, some lad made one into a WRX! dp.subaru.com/dp13-1-mods-wrx-crosstrek It's a good option if you have the finances to throw at it. If enough people ask we may get a WRX or STi factory run on them.
Firstly, how can anyone listen to this guys high pitched voice, it grates on my ears ! Secondly, at the end of the day, this new XV (as we call it in the UK) is a newer design and costs a lot more, but doesnt mean to say the old model is suddenly rubbish. Just watched a POV clip of a 2012 XV 2.0i CVT and it sounded great. Id rather buy that and save my money.
I've had my 2018 for 3 weeks now, and I love it. I test drove the 2016 and liked it. I held off until they made the changes or I found something better. It was definitely worth the wait. Fuel economy is slightly better than EPA ratings. There's very few things about the Crosstrek that feel anything less than solid.
ncplantdoctor maybe so, but for me that would mean I would only have to fill up once a week instead of twice for commuting. It's one of the things I miss most about my old Golf TDI. I have a Honda Fit now which gets great MPG but has a tiny gas tank. I have to fill every 3 days or so.
I have the same 2016 Crosstrek as EE but with a CVT. I enjoy the car for what it is, a great daily driver that can handle beach sand/snow without a problem. It'll never win a drag race but does just fine on the interstate. No Apple CarPlay and the option for a better stereo are the only two issues I have with mine. Great car. Reminds me of my Toyota Tacoma in value.
I only drop in on videos occasionally, but funny we both ended up choosing the same models of vehicles (2006 Honda S2000 Laguna Blue Pearl on Black, 2018 Subaru Crosstrek Limited Dark Gray Metallic on 2 tone Gray/Black). I used to own only manuals, but the Limited's features and Eyesight tipped me toward the CVT. I already have experience with the previous generation Impreza's CVT (your Crosstrek's sister car) and it works pretty well except for the fake gear ratios - wish it would just hold the most efficient rpm under hard load. The nice thing about the suspension improvements on the 2018 is you can be more of a momentum driver. Custom ordered, so I pick mine up on Thursday.
No trolling here. I have owned my new 2018 Crosstrek for a week now and absolutely glad I traded the Rav4 for the Subaru. The Crosstrek's safety features is way ahead of Toyota Rav4, gas mileage and travel range is far greater, the AWD system is superior, the handling/cornering is far better. Try a Crosstrek before you buy a Rav4. Sorry Toyota fans, like I said in a post earlier I have and owned Toyota's for over 35 years and will sing their praises but the Rav4 AWD system sucks! Toyota needs to step up how their AWD system works in my professional opinion.
I now have just under 2,800 miles on my Crosstrek and really like this car. The fuel mileage is great, safety features are awesome, and does way better than the Rav4 in the snow and ice. So if Subaru's have Toyota guts, so be it. Lol
Hey Triple6dynomax, I now have just over 3,000 miles and going to Subaru for it's first oil change tomorrow. Once again my Wife and I really enjoy our new Crosstrek. This car performs extremely well in adverse weather conditions. I put BF Goodrich Ko2's on the vehicle and the tires are quiet and smooth, they perform extremely well in the snow and ice.
Robert my Subaru is the best new car I have ever bought. The AWD system is proven far superior to Toyota, this boxer 4 cylinder is awesome. The CVT is chain driven rather than belt driven like Toyota. So yes I agree with you the Subaru is radically different. I have been able to modify many things on this vehicle and like it so much. I was being nice to the other guys comment having Toyota guts.
I have a 2018 Crosstrek Sport and some of the options mentioned are in the sport package (steering adapative headlights for one) or available for add on. It's a great car and I so happy with my purchase.
The radio in our 2018 premium Crosstrek is awesome, beats the stereo in our legacy 2017... our neighbor bought a 2018 limited after checking ours out the led headlights that turn are awesome!
Sadly the XT has gone of the way of the dinosaur for the 2019 model year, so if u want a XT snatch the 2018 before they sell out but can u imagine the crosstrek with that engine set up it would sell like hot cake
I recently changed my 2016 crosstrek for a 2018 one ! Basicly for the fuel Economy, because of the 6th gear. On highway, I've calculate 7,2L/100km (33mpg) and I do around 800km with a tank ! But it seems that the manual transmission is more equipped in Canada than in the US. Mine has the LED steering responsive headlight, with the 8.0 inches radio, and also have the same cluster as the limited editions. Overall, I really live the improvement that Subaru did between both generations !
Nice new video. I'm about to order a 2018 Crosstrek this week. I really wish the LED headlights and upgraded 8" headunit/speakers were offered in the "Premium" model as I dislike leather seats.
Great video! I hope Subaru sends you a present for your informative review. You have a typo in section 9 of the video. I like how they have improved the power issues which were very noticeable during passing events both in city and highway settings. We went with a Kia Forte in 2016 and will be considering a trade now!
I loved my Subaru's and miss them dearly. Sold one last year and bought a SAAB (always wanted one). However, after having two Subaru's with high mileage and beating the ever living snot out of each, I miss their character. Was saving for a WRX, but I am thinking about one of these Crosstrek's now. Especially for the Alaskan winters.
27Zangle - I know it's a different beast, but try the Outback. Mine is 2015, 3.6 , iSight, and I love it ! Plenty of power, great acceleration. Suspension is so, so, but otherwise is a great car !
The Outback is very nice. My mother had a 2013 and she is afraid of long commutes. We used to take it to Anchorage every other weekend for fun. Got great gas mileage and had enough power with the CVT to get over the mountains. My wife didn't like it that much though. She likes sitting up higher, but that does not matter since its going to be my vehicle anyways. My mothers was a 4-cylinder.
27Zangle - I had a 2017 4 cylinder Outback as a loaner for a week, and I was missing something - the power of 6 cylinder engine ! I know what you are talking about, my wife prefers something bigger and higher off the ground too. She is driving a Ford Expedition 2008, with a 2"/4" leveling kit, more aggressive tires , and the Iron Bull front bumper with a winch. I prefer my Outback ! Good luck with your purchase, and have fun !
bmwmsport11 I absolutely agree. Even the wheels are meh. Can't deny the 10 reasons but it seems like they toned the looks down and made it more refined looking. And why do they have to make it wider! It was never supposed to be a bigger vehicle anyway. Seems to be the trend with newer vehicles look at the difference between the new gen Wrangler for example compared to previous 06 and back generations. The JKs dwarf the previous years.
I've always wanted a Crosstrek for reasons I really can't explain. They just looked cool to me and seemed to be the perfect daily utility vehicle. What I didn't know, until now, is how affordable they are! Must. Resist. The. Urge...
Even as an owner of a Crosstrek, I still don't really get why it is so dang popular. It sucks at many things. Namely power and towing. I turn on the AC and feel my car drop HP like it's a disease.
+99codemister many things? You named the one thing it sucks at (acceleration). For it's class, it has a solid tow rating. The majority of crossovers are not even rated to tow.
Engineering Explained So, research you say shows more power will not result in more sales? I say the research is flawed. Most best selling models of most brands have adequate power. Boringly slow cars make me want to swear at the manufacturer.
+Engineering Explained I named one thing because you mentioned my other major gripes in the video. Some of the stuff was addressed, as you pointed out, but I was referring only to the current generation. The current generation is selling insanely fast at my local dealership. When I bought mine they actually brought in three trailers full of only the Crosstrek. They sold out of them just 2.5 weeks later. If you like, I will repeat everything you said in the video.
I own a '13 XV with a manual (bought it new). It's noisy (in a bad way), has rattles, the seats are uncomfortable, the highway stability is marginal, it has a transmission from the 80s in it, the bluetooth mic makes handsfree use at surface street speeds impossible, the steering is beyond numb, the throttle lags in both directions ..., but it looks like a Tonka toy so everyone thinks it's a great car. It's my 7th Subaru (6th with a manual) and it will be my last.
Oh, by the way, being able to tow 2,000 lbs is nothing to be proud of. Look at the weight of any purpose trailer (like a very small popup camper). That is seriously only enough to tow around a (very small) flatbed with some garbage on it. My previous car could do the same with 1,000 lbs towing capacity, the Hyundai Veloster.
I have a 2018 cvt i love it. I feel like i never need to put gas. 4 hour drive i use about a quarter tank. The awd is greaat in the snow. Its boring how easy it is to drive it in bad weather. The adaptove head leads are such a nice touch once i noticed i had them lol Great review bro
EE uploading videos or "How americans are discovering the beauty of driving with a stick"...Funny that in other countries we've been driving with manual gearbox since you learn how to drive. Congrats Jason.
Leo Coscarella , I'm 18 in America and I've owned a manual for 2 years and driven them for 3. It's not that Americans don't drive manuals; the general public just sees them as an unnecessary inconvenience that is reserved for enthusiasts.
Please don't get me wrong, I know there's a public for manuals...I actually celebrate that people like Jason does a good job showing non-enthusiasts the nice things about manual transmission cars.
What are the nice things about manual cars? I see no joy in them and never enjoy the times i drive one. It's just an extra thing to do while driving and I really don't need what small increases in performance they allow for me.
Because it's an extra thing to do and manage, which I think is fun. If I had to go at the slow highway speeds in the US and couldn't even shift before/after, I'd just fall asleep at the wheel.
this is the first time i've ever heard "droped the manual in europe and kept it in the US" lol
pxK BMW M5, from E60 onwards there's been a manual option in USA but not in Europe...
It's really strange, but for me in Switzerland arrive with manual gearbox...I hope !
Subaru's in general aren't that hot in Europe because their diesel engines are pretty bad.
I was shocked! But happy they kept it.
More over, WRX is not available with a manual in certain european countries if not across the whole Europe.
Thank you
And then realizing 15 mins later that there's nothing down that dirt road, which is why the government hasn't invested in paving it.

What's the 2020 have over the 2018 model?
The new infotainment system is why I went with the new Impreza. It's worlds beyond the old systems Subaru's used in the past.
Cameron Sours tbh that's really with anything
Great cars.
I miss the old Subaru where they'd throw the Wrx motor in everything (Legacy, Forester, ect.) this car deperately needs more power.
CrialCrial I don't think their core audience would notice. Enthusiasts are better off shopping elsewhere.
this is why i have the fxt
Ian Irizarry the FXT is ideal, but no manual 😕
Thanks.
Manual in the US, automatic in Europe? Are they mad?
EinChris75 at least the Americans are happy, 2018 model seems somewhat tempting over getting a second STI.
Europe probably doesnt buy into the whole AWD as a necessity thing and likely means Subaru's market share is much smaller than in the US. Limiting options and features means they can get a car to market for less to increase profit margins.
crosstrek isn't that popular in europe I think, only ever hear about it from american youtube channels
EinChris75 it's a conspiracy, theres a plan to make everyone in the world drive automatics before pushing the autonomous cars...sleep with your eyes open and also keep your blinds opened 🙃🙃😵😵😵
They don't sell 2018 Crosstrek (or Impreza) in Europe at all, I don't know they he got that information.
So
Better trans
Better engine
Better chassis
Better suspension
Better tech
Sounds like you should trade up
Lel for not being a sports car you seemed to enjoy this one alot
yes but does that incremental increase wich is inavoidable worth it? i think not.

+The Vibe He would get another 2 years of manufacture warranty
With the amount of views he gets, he can easily get the 2018.
The Vibe it is definitely worth it. I've driven the 2017 and 2018 back to back and the difference is night and day.
Awesome, I love the ‘18, and love my ‘16!
After owning a 2.5L outback for a month, I switched to a 2.0L crosstrek and this thing is so much faster and more nimble
Makes sense. Even though the Outback has the slightly more powerful engine, the Crosstrek is 400-500 LBS lighter.. that much weight definitely makes a difference..
Was testing cars yesterday and actually bought the 2018 model. I was thoroughly impressed with this Crosstrek
+Mike Calderon nice, congrats on your new ride!
Engineering Explained thank you. It's your videos that help make informed decisions and understand what's out there. Keep up the good work!
Mike Calderon
I did the same thing. I absolutely love my 2018 Crosstrek w/6-speed manual. Thanks EE for the great review, this is going to help me explain exactly why I opted for it.
How does your shifter feel? My 2017 Crosstrek had a great feeling 5-spd.
Tucsonan Dude shifter feels solid. Occasionally getting into reverse is just a bit stiff, but that's too be expected. Transitions during acceleration are as smooth as can be
They need to bring back the WRX hatch. The used prices on those show there is pent up demand for a new one.
Maybe it's a regulation thing that has to do with fuel economy. I'm sure there is a reason.
Yeah, you can probably blame the EU. Weep at your masters control of your life.
I doubt a company as Subaru cant deal with emissions, considering their other SUVs are purchasable here, all with manual transmissions.
I gueass its more because subaru isnt relly popular here. to ship manuals also would be too expensive
Go Try The 2021 with the 2.5. Just makes the Crosstrek so much more enjoyable to drive.
All the reasons mentioned are why I’m happy with my 2019 base manual...but 30 more hp would be perfect!
Just sell your old crosstrek and go for the new one with i-sight. Worth it
My friend did the same and he can tell there is at least 40% difference
+Attila theHun I don't think the claim is literally exactly 40%.
the eyesight package is worth every penny.
I just bought a 2018 and the i-sight is awesome!
His penis grew 40% more because of the erection he had from buying the newer model.
Mike Roth it's for those who want a wrx wagon. haha
Soccer moms need to learn shitck
Nope, I was wrong: was looking at the 2017 model, not the 2018
//I'm not sure, but I think here in Italy you can get this model with the 2 liters engine, 6 gears manual transmission. It's the diesel version though.
Or at least this is how it's advertised.
Don't think about it too hard. Subaru seems to be off their rocker these days.
Market analysis.
So, basically, people that buy manuals need to stop being cheapskates? :D
But the newer lower trims have better tech then the older ones?..I.e 2011..
This is the review I have been looking for! My new commute will be roughly 130 miles round trip so I have been heavily researching the subaru lineup and have been debating between the Legacy and Crosstrek. This video may have made my decision for me.
Thank you Subaru for keeping the manual transmissions!
at least in the US lol
I bought a Crosstrek Limited last year and it has been an absolute dream.
Subaru: 152 hp, 145 lb tq
- 33 mpg highway
VW Golf Alltrack: 170 hp, 199 lb tq
- 32 mpg highway
Both AWD, both have raised suspensions over their sibling variants.
Both have automatics and manual transmission options.
For me personally, the new Gen 3 1.8 TSI engine found in the VW is far superior to the new 2.0 N/A engine in the Subaru line-up. And both use their company's new global chassis.
Please do a comparison video!
Uberragen21 you are so right. Drove both on a test drive. Hated the sub bought vw alltrack for less. Couldnt be happier.
Thats not true.
In my neck of the woods there are still a few Alltracks on dealership lots!
Picked up a 2018 Crosstrek last week. It has many improvements and a great all around vehicle.
Number 9 is not labeled right I think.
Ha, nope. Should read "Efficiency & Range"
Ha! For a half second, I thought "Wow, the infotainment must be GREAT to be covered twice!" :)
Engineering Explained I am happy Subaru has included a larger gas tank. I feel like too many auto makers have shrunk gas tanks as efficiency has improved, especially in smaller cars. There is something to be said about being able to fill up less when on long road trips.
Engineering Explained damn it Jason!! Now you have to do the whole video again.
Well, I suspect that Subaru sales will continue to rise steadily for the foreseeable future.
"If the sides were wider, it'd be easier to slide it in" ;)
Andrew Murphy giddy
That’s what she said!
I've had my '18 for a month. Given that I wanted a manual, I went with the premium, and therefore couldn't get the HK audio. I did get the Rockford Fosgate upgrade, and it does sound very good.
Had anyone noticed that the text that appears on the video (top left) for each improvement indicates 6. infotainment/audio 4:48 and also 9. infotainment/audio 6:46.
awesome video. I'm also looking at a crosstrek as my next vehicle. the appeal of a manual trans coupled with the AWD system is a HUGE plus for me.
I have a 17 Impreza sport and it's on the same platform. I love it. Very slow in a straight line but handles amazing. And it's my first car.
Same, it doesnt have much low end torque but it handles really nicely on mountain roads, especially fun on downhill slopes
I'm going to college where it snows soon, have you driven it through snow? Does the lower height than the cross trek cause issues?
mericle123 I have not driven through snow yet. But from what I’ve seen on UA-cam is that it can do extremely well and I think Impreza is better looking for the 2017 year instead of the new cross trek
This is one of the videos that i watched before buying my 2018 over the 2017. Thank you.
I want the high end stereo & a manual transmission!!
I just got a new 2018 pearl white crosstrek premium and I really like the smooth suspension and the stereo system. So far loving the car. Previous car 2007 Mazda CX7 awd.
how did they kept the manual in america and sell automatic only in europe?
Europe probably doesnt buy into the whole AWD as a necessity thing and likely means Subaru's market share is much smaller than in the US. Limiting options and features means they can get a car to market for less to increase profit margins.
Alan Bowers we do buy into the 4x4 nowadays, best selling things on wheels. But also you can buy a dacia duster 4x4 1.5 diesel for about 12 grand new.
I don;t know where he got that info from, Subaru doesn;t sell this gen Crosstrek in Europe at all.
in Russia, too, is sold CVT. And the price is like bmw x1
Am i living in a dystopian future where i have to live in fear of the extinction of manuals and v8s?
plasma246 yes
Yes. And you also have to fear rev-hang in the few manuals remaining.
plasma246 unfortunately, yes, as well as the demise of large naturally aspirated engines and weird-but-cool stuff like windy windows and 5-cylinder engines, not to mention that everything is so heavy nowadays.
With V6 engines' ability to output the same or more horse power than V8 rivals, why is that an issue? When my 2.0T can outperform a V8 from decades ago, is there really a reason for V8s on everyday cars?
Why get a gas guzzling V8 when a modern V6 or hybrid could perform at or similar specs?
I was so happy I waited for the 2018. The updated 6 speed, exterior styling, CarPlay, and interior made it so worth it.
Igual wander... How come Honda had a 240HP 2.0 i4 in 2000 and 17 years later we are not getting even 100HP per litre?
SalveMonesvol Torque, fuel economy, and emissions. The S2000 has no low end torque for easy maneuvering around traffic, gets horrendous fuel economy given its 2.0L (or 2.2) displacement, and is certainly not designated a PZEV. I should know...I own both. The Subaru may not be powerful but given how efficient it is, it doesn't do bad at all. The S2000 gets away with low torque because who cares if you need to wring it out? That's its purpose.
@@afterburn2600 Thanks for your knowledgeable reply as an S2000 owner. Look at all the thumbs-up for SalveM: The Glory of Ignorance.
New drinking game: take a shot everytime Jason says "you know"
I had a 2013 Crosstrek.
"The rear had started to get round"
Could you please explain this to me. What does this mean?
You want boring? Drive my 04’ Outback. Looking at Crosstreks, but having no car payments for the last 10 or so years has been nice. Hmmmm
Canadian Sport model has the upgraded Infotainment + 6spd Manual, mine arrives this week :)
Cool. How are you liking the vehicle a few months in?
Subaru needs to make a Crosstrek XT with the WRX motor. That thing would sell like crazy.
Then it would cost close to the Forester XT which is a bigger and more luxurious ride.
So lux people get the forester and sporty people get the crosstrek. bam!
exo STi crosstrek! Haha
I just purchased a new 2019 Impreza Base 5MT and I love it, the global platform is very good.
The brz/Toyota 86 has an na 200 hp 2.0 Liter. They could put that in the trek, but the fuel milage would drop.
Just got my 2018 Crosstrek with a 6 speed manual. Much agreed with sir Jason, its a much quieter, more efficient car, and better riding car. It could use a bit more power, but it's really not a deal breaker for me. If anything, its part of the cars charm
This would appeal to a lot more people if they would just put a detuned version of the fa20dit in there, and call it the crosstrek xt!!!
woohunter1 it's been done before, some lad made one into a WRX!
dp.subaru.com/dp13-1-mods-wrx-crosstrek
It's a good option if you have the finances to throw at it. If enough people ask we may get a WRX or STi factory run on them.
Just for fun good read, interesting, sure was a lot of work
Firstly, how can anyone listen to this guys high pitched voice, it grates on my ears !
This Fall, it will be: "10 Reasons I should've waited for the 2019..."
Turbo Crosstrek when?
Not needed. Market analysis apparently does not support it's feasibility.
I've had my 2023 Premium six-speed for 2 1/2 months, and aside from tire noise from the G91 Geolandars I really like it.
The driving range for commuting is fine, but on long drives I drink enough coffee that I cannot go 500+ miles on my tank.
ncplantdoctor maybe so, but for me that would mean I would only have to fill up once a week instead of twice for commuting. It's one of the things I miss most about my old Golf TDI. I have a Honda Fit now which gets great MPG but has a tiny gas tank. I have to fill every 3 days or so.
Gweeper64 yeah I'd be able to go about two weeks instead of 4 to 5 days in my Jeep. Love my Jeep but I may end up in a Subaru at some point.
I thought he said the Virginity of this car has been totally RENEWED... 🤣🤣🤣
Toyota needs to step up how their AWD system works in my professional opinion.
guess what. Subaru's have Toyota guts.
I now have just under 2,800 miles on my Crosstrek and really like this car. The fuel mileage is great, safety features are awesome, and does way better than the Rav4 in the snow and ice. So if Subaru's have Toyota guts, so be it. Lol
Yep! the rav4 styling also sucks...
It's a great car and I so happy with my purchase.
do a video about runaway diesels
Just purchased a 2018. It's awesome!!!!!!
It would be cool to see an STI trim level for the Crosstrek I think.
magnaxilorius yes
...or a Wilderness 2.5T 6spd. The forced induction would be nice for higher altitudes.
Ooooh man! You really study your stuff! And respect your audience! Thank you
Trade it in :)
The radio in our 2018 premium Crosstrek is awesome, beats the stereo in our legacy 2017... our neighbor bought a 2018 limited after checking ours out the led headlights that turn are awesome!
152 hp? Still so slow. The forester xt turbo is the only way to go. Yes I know, no manual but 250 hp in the xt wins that argument.
+DMETS519 nonsense! 😬
Sadly the XT has gone of the way of the dinosaur for the 2019 model year, so if u want a XT snatch the 2018 before they sell out but can u imagine the crosstrek with that engine set up it would sell like hot cake
recently got a 2017 used and I'm loving it. There are some quirks to work out but im hooked.
One reason your outgoing model is better: that hyper blue tho
I recently changed my 2016 crosstrek for a 2018 one ! Basicly for the fuel Economy, because of the 6th gear. On highway, I've calculate 7,2L/100km (33mpg) and I do around 800km with a tank ! But it seems that the manual transmission is more equipped in Canada than in the US. Mine has the LED steering responsive headlight, with the 8.0 inches radio, and also have the same cluster as the limited editions. Overall, I really live the improvement that Subaru did between both generations !
Never buy the first model year of any vehicle. Give them some time to iron out the kinks
True, UNLESS it is a used car and you have done your research.
Nice new video. I'm about to order a 2018 Crosstrek this week. I really wish the LED headlights and upgraded 8" headunit/speakers were offered in the "Premium" model as I dislike leather seats.
+James Kaffka I'm with you 100%! I want the limited features with cloth seats and a stick shift. Ugh.
Wait, what? 5 speed in a 2016 Car?
Okey i get it, thought it had like 200+ horsepower.
all cars should be available manual.... no question. people are lazy in NA, can't even drive properly
Love your videos 👍
They dropped the manual transmission in Australia too
Please review the 2018 Camry 4 cylinder
or have some class and not ty
XLE wold be nice, thaat things is FAST i heard lol
Great video! I hope Subaru sends you a present for your informative review. You have a typo in section 9 of the video.
I like how they have improved the power issues which were very noticeable during passing events both in city and highway settings. We went with a Kia Forte in 2016 and will be considering a trade now!
The 2016 Crosstrek looks so much better from the outside !
PepperoniPizzaSlice I agree.
The styling of this doesn't look as good as the previous Crosstrek. The lines of this doesn't match the lifted rigged look.
bmwmsport11 i agree. The older one looked great
bmwmsport11 I absolutely agree.
Just got my 2018 premium Crosstrek ! Love it !
why would anyone want a 150hp crosstrek?
+M. H. I can think of 10 good reasons. 😎
nobody wants one, they are just a not so bad choice amongst a bunch of bad choices.
150hp is plenty for normal driving.
They are everywhere in southern California, especially the mountains. And Forester, Outback, Ascent...
I have a 2017 manual and I’m happy with it. I got a good deal so won’t be trading up. The grass is always greener and all that.
just trade yours in...
The adaptove head leads are such a nice touch once i noticed i had them lol
Great review bro
Because it's fun rowing gears. And manual is more reliable
