Love that song!
"(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" was the first ever posthumous single to top the charts in the U.S. 1967 was the year Otis Redding created a buzz for himself at the Monterey Pop Festival with legendary performances of "I've Been Loving You Too Long", "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", and "Try a Little Tenderness". It was also the year he died, sadly. Reprise records released a live album from that concert in 1970, with the Jimi Hendrix Experience on side one and Otis Redding on side two that I used to often listen to back when I was a teenager in the eighties. I picked up a couple of Otis Redding compilation albums later in that decade. The legendary Steve Cropper co-wrote "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay". The sweet guitar licks he lays down on it influenced generations of players. Too bad whatever mix this is left all of that out. That is, what you heard there was not the single but something somebody else did later, much later most likely. It sounds like an session outtake, even the whistle was a bit off.
Oh wow! To everything you said here. I didn’t know Otis died young.
@@EmpressReacts Yep, sadly. Otis Redding died in a plane crash in Wisconsin along with several members of his backing band the Bar Kays. Check out their song "Soul Finger" when you can.
Yeah it’s a good whistle
💯💯
Hey I remember Otis Redding sitting on the dock of bay nice song to loved your reaction Empress and I like the whistle in this song to it’s cool
Pure soul--Otis Redding was one of the few who could do it that well. Song was meant to be chill. If you're looking for something more upbeat, check out his version of "Respect" (ua-cam.com/video/7BDw-H_hUzw/v-deo.html) at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. Aretha had a big hit with this song, but Otis wrote it, and I actually like his version better.
This song stays on my Playlist. It reminds me when have family backyard gatherings with the card games, kids playing and somebody's blocking up the bathroom with someone eles , misbehaving. This song would come on and would here " oh yeah!!.
🧡
It's the kinda sound that could've been recorded in a garage..No EQ, not a lot of amps , no fx..just the natural sound of instruments and Otis' beautiful voice....Timing of his death was just unfair as hell.
Time for you to take a deep dive into Stax: Otis Redding, Carla Thomas, Booker T and the MGs, Sam and Dave, Staples Singers, Issac Hayes and many more.
Noted!
CLASSIC SOUL‼️ Probably the song most associated with Otis. His singing might seem a little understated, but the emotions radiate through effortlessly. I almost for about Jay & Ye sampling this.
Oh wow! So this was his biggest hit?
Where habe you been woman?!!
Sad when you realise he died in a plane crash not long after in the studio recording this song.
Interesting. Of course I've heard the song a thousand times, but never this version. Must have been a take they didn't choose for the single. His singing here is not quite as good, but it's O.K.
Interesting!!
Plus the tasty lead guitar licks are missing.
Find the original official single release for a better performance, Empress. This one was a little off. Still amazing though!
