I agree. It's stripped down to a point where his singing and whistling is what provides the power. Adding an electric guitar or other vocals would have taken away from it.

Great Sad song. He never lived to see it become his biggest hit. That is very sad. Steve Cropper finished it and got it released because Otis had passed away so suddenly in a plane Crash in Wisconsin. I went to the UW-Madison campus where the lake is where he drowned years ago. I said a prayer for him. It made me sad to think he perished in that lake. I still like the song because it’s a soul classic. RIP Otis Redding
Redding had not even finished the lyrics. The whistling was a placeholder for additional words that he never got to write or sing. A great song, but a sad song!
Wrong, this is a common misconception. How do I know the whistling is intentional? There are multiple takes of him recording vocals to the track, and all of them end with him whistling (obviously intentional.)
liberty Ann DID YOU KNOW THAT MOST OF THE HIPPIES THAT WERE IN SAN FRANCISCO CAME FROM RICH A NB D VERY WELL TO DO FAMILIES....I KNOW BECAUSE I'M 62 YEARS OLD AND BORN AND RAISED IN SAN FRANCISCO. AND PEOPLE WHO ARE ORIGINALLY FROM SAN FRANCISCO DON'T CALL IT FRISCO.
Wasn't it Disco that started the use of Frisco? As for Cali,it's the 90s rappers I first heard say that, but what do I know? I went to San Francisco in 2004 and a lady friend of mine,an old hippie chick at heart, said I must go to Sausolito, and a street or group of streets in one other place but I can't remember which now. She also talked about Oakland; she lent me her comics of things like the Furry Freak Brothers and her crowd were huge fans of the Grateful Dead. Unfortunately I didn't get to Sausolito or the other place because I was with a group of people on their itinery, and the Golden Gate was hidden within thick fog when we went up to it. We could tell the place had lost a bit from those heady 60s-70s days (which it's hopefully getting back again by now) but I enjoyed some of the things we went to and parts we spent time in like Fisherman's Wharf.
Before a winter's dawn, walking off jet lag, then sitting at a ferry dock in Oslo, Akershus Festning to my left and Aker Brygge to my right...and Otis's song pops up. Indelible.
Music history and appreciation should be a compulsory subject in all schools from the ages of 5 to 15, preferably the music that came out of the 60's and 70's, I think it would be a real asset to shaping and guiding the hearts and minds of future generations.
Agreed. I argue there's so much more soul and culture conveyed through music, especially to the younger generation, than the cliche English class poems and books. We might not be able to describe music to the fullest extent, but we can definitely feel it. And why waste time reading about history, when you can feel it?
Great channel, I agree. I"m a little confused as to The Staple Singers doing the vocals as Steve Cropper mentioned. They are not on Otis' original hit so why mention them even if they had a minor score with this?
I have definitely heard an early version of Dock of the Bay when at the end after the whistling the tune stops and someone, probably in the band, says, "You ain't going to make it as no whistler Otis." I'm also sure someone in the background makes the sound of seagulls toward the end. Tell me I'm not dreaming. Otis is my #1 favourite musician of all time in all genres. What a sad loss.

Just one year later, along with Booker T & the MG's, Cropper wrote the #1 smash hit "Green Onions." In the years to follow he co-wrote some of music's biggest classics such as "Knock On Wood," "Midnight Hour," "634-5789," and in 1967 the legendary “(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay," with friend Otis Redding, establishing Cropper as a songwriting genius.
