This song was written about one of their guitarists, Gary Rossington, who, ironically, ended up being the LAST surviving member of Skynyrd, who was still playing Skynyrd, and in Skynyrd.
The 1976 knebworth live version of Freebird was amazing in numerous ways! They opened for The Rolling Stones and read different articles they were told not to go out for an encore and play Freebird. Their show was going great and running long, so Ronnie Van Zant did as always, forgot management etc. and played an extra long version of Freebird and you’ll see the sacred Tongue only permitted use for the Stones, making this Freebird classic memorable! Lynyrd
Back up singers are called The Honkettes: JoJo Billingsley, Leslie Hawkins and Cassie Gaines (guitarist Steve Gaines' sister; both perished in the plane crash)
Excellent reaction! It was an anti hard drug song. There is no one like skynard and never will be again. Saw them live before the crash and I'll never forget it.
No not the smell of smoke or the smell of drugs Ronnie says it plainly , ooh ooh that smell the smell of DEATH surrounds you it's an old saying that you tell someone when they are fucking up really bad and their end could be very close . And even tho Ronnie Van Zant and Allen Collins wrote it for Gary Rossington after a drunk and stoned car crash Ronnie for his part was actually writing it for all of them the whole band including himself ! WHO DEY
The song is about guitarist Gary Rossington nicknamed Prince Charming.Gary just Recently having past away.He was the last founding member to pass..I guess it's kind of ironic giving the lyrics to the song.Gary was a real survivor having escaped death a few times including their tragic plane crash
By Far One Of The Greatest Songs Ever Written with deepest darkest meanings ever if you know what i mean if you been there dun that and survived this song says it all on all levels
Yes, this song has deep content. Gary wrecked his car into an Oak Tree (lyrics, “Oak tree you’re in my way), and the band had to delay their tour. They fined Gary $10,000. The band were probably still in their early to mid 20s, and had began cleaning their lives up. The way he was living, “the smell of death” was definitely around him. Ironically, other than Artimus Pyle, Gary lived to be 71, older than any other original band member.
That album cover was changed after the plane crash removing the flames. A very sad day in rock history. Fortunately they produced some awesome classic rock before that fateful day like this warning about drugs and alcohol killing friends and family. I had the original cassette with flames, but Ironically lost it in a fire.
The song was written as a warning to guitar player Gary Rossington who was doing all the things mentioned in the song. After the success of the first album and tour, he crashed his car into an oak tree during a night of partying. He delayed the second tour by months. Singer Ronnie Van Zant(band leader) was furious and worried about fellow band member Gary Rossington. So he wrote this song as a warning to Gary and all others who indulge. Oddly enough, with all of Gary's vices, he was the last surviving member of the original band.
Mystery and Intrigue…. When an unknown band name is suggested it comes with mystery of who they are and what they sound like. Names like Pink Floyd, Supertramp, Kansas, Jethro Tull, Lynyrd Skynyrd… Then after you discover who they are and how talented they are each new song comes with Intrigue knowing it is going to be greatness on display. I just smile.
This is about guitarist Gary Rossington who bought a new car, got drunk and crashed into a tree, then a house. Great reaction! Try Simple man, a slower but great one. Also Give me three steps, another fast one is great.
Johnny Van Zant took over for his brother Ronnie as lead singer. Sounded very similar. L.S. recently lost a founding member Lead Guitarist Gary Rossington. They toured until his death. I saw them in 2018. My videos are on my channel from my camera.
They don't have a bad song. You could start listening to the first album and continue through this one, which was their last studio album before the plane crash, and every song would be good. You should check out the opening track I Ain't the One from their debut album Pronounced. That was my first introduction to their music and I've been hooked ever since.
Another HOME RUN HIT added to your Batting Record. JM... if you were in the MLB you're hitting well over 800 in my opinion. An All Star Reactor. This makes 119 in your folder on my desktop.
shooting up coke is extremely dangerous because the feeling is so intense and it wares off fairly quickly, so you keep increasing the amount you shoot up to try and get a better high. And the smell of death is not knowing if the next round is gonna kill you.
The song was inspired by guitarist Gary Rossington who got drunk and high and crashed his bran new car into an oak tree, and bounced off and into a phone poll then a house, he almost died, they had to cancel 6 concerts, and the band fined him $5000
Such tasty guitar playing. Considering the lifestyle of these bands at the time an excellent read is the biography of the Allman Brothers Band, "One Way Out" which is largely composed of interviews of anybody and everybody that was connected to or part of the band whether they conflict or not. At one point the whole band was hooked on heroin and was still managing to function. Makes for compelling reading.
JM... this is getting close to Heaven, or as close as we may ever get. When three of the most talented musicians get together it was said that the "CREAM" has risen to the top. Eric "GOD" Clapton - Guitars/Vocals... Jack Bruce - Bass/Vocals... Ginger Baker- Drums....Start with this.... "Crossroads" Live in 1968.... you might want to get on your knees and bow.
The song I remember being played the most when they released their third album was, "Saturday Night Special", Surprisingly nobody plays it anymore. Another album never played is Jethro Tull's "Benefit"!, Crosby, Stills and Nash released a live concert video called "Daylight Again" that is excellent! Here's one "Green Manalishi" by Fleetwood Mac, released in 1969.
That Smell - refers to shooting up "Pure" Cocaine...... It is a very-very powerful "Clinical" smell as soon as it hits your vein..... then the immediate euphoria ... it is truly addictive!!!!
WRONG it's referring to the old saying and says it in plain language right in the song , the smell of death surrounds you i.e. living your life on a path to destruction ✌️😎
JM, I'd like to be the first to introduce you to "GOD".... Eric Clapton. in the sixties was called that for very good godly like reasons. Clapton is a Cornerstone Of Classic Rock. His guitar is among the most legendary greatest of all time, or ever will be. I suggest you start with a song that made him the legend he is today. From the group "Cream" - "Crossroads" live... then do "Layla" album version, then live.... this guy gets deep.... real deep.
One of the greatest Rock and Roll Songs ever Composed
This song was written about one of their guitarists, Gary Rossington, who, ironically, ended up being the LAST surviving member of Skynyrd, who was still playing Skynyrd, and in Skynyrd.
He was singing about band member Gary Rossi from...R.I.P.
The smell of death surrounds you is what he was saying. Nice one brother

High school in 70's I'm so grateful for the music then compared to now just substance n ability to play a instrument
You sho got that right!👉
I graduated in 1970! We had the greatest music in our generation! 🔥👵🏼☮️💜
Yes, we sure did! There will never be another 70s. We were truly blessed to have been a part of it.
Great song selection. I’m sure you have done the legendary, Freebird. If you haven’t yet, Tuesday’s Gone, is another great classic by Skynyrd.
The second lead at 2:40 is Steve Gaines. Absolutely one of my favorite players.
Music is food for my Soul, first 5 records, GOAT❤😂🎉

We had a copy of the album with the flames on the cover. My ex took all the albums when we split up 😢👵🏼☮️💜
@@sharonpate5481 Some would give big $$$$$ for it.
You can't go wrong with SKYNYRD

The best Anti-Drug message. LS is a must read background to their music = real life events.

I really like what you do here on so many levels...kudos.

Thank you for really listening to the lyrics. It is a deep and powerful song.

Sheer genius, just to add IMO the later version of the band produced awesome music too!

An anti-drug song, written for Prince Charming, Gary Rossington. Enjoyed your reaction. This band is phenomenal.
The smell of death surrounds you.
Yeah!
The smell of death surrounds you
The lyrics are "the smell of death surrounds you". It's kinda hard to hear him say "death"
excellent
Should do the live version

In the 70's Pure Coke was fairly easy to get. Not so much today.....
