The dude playing drums is still alive. But apparently this isn't the "original" band because this drummer isn't the original. He didn't play with the band in the 3rd grade.
Drama, Ronnie Van Zant wrote this song about Gary Rossington, the Guitar player, A True Story, This is about the smell of Death, Unfortunatly i have seen Many Many People Drinking Whiskey at Skynyrd Concerts, They took the Song and the Message the Wrong Way, Gary is the Only surviving member of the Original Band, Gary was loaded driving his New car and hit a Oak Tree, Crashed, It is lucky he survived, the words are all True Man, This is the First only Anti Drug anti Driving Drunk song that i know of, If you really listen to the words you will see, Ronnie was a songwriter of the real things in life, R.I.P. To All, Rock On, Cousin Figel
Artimus is still alilve... but Bob Burns was the original drummer...recording wise....he was on the the 1st 2 albums...but Artimus is a great drummer and really added alot when he joined..
Yep, and that was Gaines on that first guitar solo. It was a thing of beauty. Ronnie said "I better look out 'cause this dude is gonna end up taking over the band!" Ronnie was that impressed with his talent.
Lynyrd Skynyrd was the best band of all time the only band in history the truly knew how to use 3 amazing guitar players....can you think of another song where the back up singers scream HELL YEAH!!! LOL
Nothing against Free Bird (I love Free Bird), but this is my absolute fav Skynyrd song: , the message, the background vocals, and the guitar work on this song is impeccable. I think you might have missed the point though, it wasn't glorifying drugs, it was anti-drugs---"the smell of death surrounds you".
Glad you liked it, but I think you missed the point of the song. It's an ANTI-DRUG and drinking song, it says that if you take another toke, stick needles in your arms, it very well might kill you. Take one more drink it'll drown you. It's saying don't do drugs. The music is great, as to be expected from Skynyrd, but listen to the words. Thanks again.
The Tedeschi Trucks Band. Derek Trucks is the nephew of Butch Trucks, one of the drummers of the Allman Bros. Derek plays some fine slide guitar and his wife Susan sings some mighty fine soulful stuff! One of my favs is Bound For Glory. Betcha can't like just one....Made Up Mind.
I’m almost jealous that you’re getting to discover this music and it’s new to you. I’ve heard this all of my life. I’m so glad you’re discovering their music. BTW, been praying for you and your family. The song is written about one of the guitarists, Gary Rossington.
Not just Gary Rossington but Billy Powell crashed the same weekend and I think they both had new cars both were busted up but Gary's crash was much worse, this was in the prime of their fame and I would guess that they had just gotten some big paychecks henceforth new cars drugs and alcohol.
The Smell that surrounds him is the Smell Of Death this song is an Anti Drug and Alcohol Song, and If you do a reaction to Saturday Night Special that is an Anti Gun Song
Saturday night special is one of my favorite Skynyrd songs in it took me years to figure out what he was actually talking about but yes it’s got an amazing message
The first cautionary anti-drug song I remember hearing. Def not intended to be a party tune... but then again, whenever Skynyrd is blasting, it's a PARTY!
This album was the pinnacle of Skynyrd's discography of which there are many great albums. There is not a weak song on Street Survivors. Unfortunately we lost the band shortly after the release of this album. Oh what could have been. If you love the guitar work of Steve Gains, check out "I know a Little" and check out his band Crawdad which he headed prior to joining Skynyrd.
Been playing bass 44 yrs, "Southern Rock" is very complex with the multiple guitars doing " hand offs" luv the respect that you give it! ❤️ To play this right, you gotta be on your game! ❤️❤️
This is my all time favorite band ....each person in this group was a monster on the instrument they played...every guitar player ..the drummer ....the vocals 💜💜💜💜 best ever!!!
Lynyrd skynyrd is the real deal. This song was written as a warning about alcohol abuse etc.... A band member wrecked his new car, "Oak tree you're in my way".
I love to see the appreciation from the younger generation. That speaks volumes of how good Skynyrd was! You hit the nail on the head. We’ve lost the art of making great music.. This song is from their last album before the plane crash in 1977. It’s an anti-drug, anti alcohol abuse song. Ronnie is singing about the smell of death that gets around. And you can hear him acknowledging that he’s been there! Great job!
The guitars are great in the way they wind in and out of each other, support and back and then go solo, a staple for southern rock. Allman Brothers did a great job of this too.
The original album cover that this song was from pictured the band walking through flames. After the plane crash the album was pulled and re-released without the flames
I listen to all types of music but i grew up listening to this kickass band. Great reaction brother. Music brings us all together. Much respect from Mobile, Alabama my friend.
Lynyrd Skynyrd was my dad's favorite band. His favorite song from them was Free Bird. Dramasyde my dad really liked watching your reactions. He passed away on February 19. 2020. He also liked this song too. You were one of his favorite reactors.😢😭💔❤
LS is the perfect blend of rock, blues, soul and a smidge of country twang. Nobody does it like they did. I honestly believe that had they lived and played for 5 more years, they would've been the greatest rock and roll band in history. They were that good.
One of the best! I personally love "Curtis Loew" as my favorite, but this is a song with a deep meaning to addiction! Thank you for doing your own research and giving us this review.
One of their top 3 songs to me.3 guitars ....deep song about one of their guitarists Gary Rossington having a car accident drunk before a tour started. They call him “ Prince Charming” still. If you want to see it done live perfectly, try the Vicious Cycles dvd...will give you chills at the end.
They were singing about the realization of drugs and alcohol, they were sick of being sick and it was time to stop. Some of them were starting families and didn`t want the smell of drugs and alcohol around anymore. They were growing up. Next do "Sweet Home Alabama", "Simple Man", "Call Me The Breeze" (live), "Tuesday Gone". "Gimme Three Steps", "The Ballad Of Curtis Loew", "Saturday Night Special", "Workin For MCA", and more
Try out their album Nuthin Fancy it's my favorite of all their albums and it doesn't get as much air time as the others. Its deep cuts for sure and it contains some of their blusiest and funkiest material. Just fn awesome! And four walls of Rayford too. Just Dolbro playin and Ronnie singing. Killer!
You might be interested to know that there's a great live version of this song out there. It was recorded at a concert they did just weeks before the original band died.
I love you my brother, and don't even know you. Great reaction! What a great song by a legendary band. Thank you for keeping this great music alive! And there is something special about southern rock. Has there ever been a bad song in the genre?? I haven't found it. You're channel brings me joy. Thanks man!
I love Lynyrd Skynyrd we used to go and see him all the time even after he was killed and his brother took over as lead singer there a great band I love all the songs but there’s one special song for me it’s called call me the breeze that was my best friend and he died three years ago for Super Bowl Sunday he was my friend for 40 years and I’ll never forget them as long as I live I think of them many many times Liz the queen I hope you pay it one of these days thank you
The second solo is played by Steve Gaines. He most always played a strat Gary Rossington played a les paul Allen Collins play a firebird or explorer. You can tell who is playing. The first solo is Gary Rossington you can tell the fat chunk of a paul and the bright twang of a strat. Hope that helps you. Love your channel
Again we can sing bye bye miss american pie. October 20 1977. once again is the day the music died. I was 18 and very into this band. My heart still bleeds for this tragic, and uncalled for loss. Street Survivors is still played constantly. I can't seem to get enough of it ,and I still listen to this album over and over to this day. WOW. all started and unleashed from a baseball event, & childhood friends. Miss you Ronnie.
Thanks so much for this music your reacting to, it makes me proud to be born and raised here in Jax, Florida and to see your reaction to this music and to know what your talking about. I’ve watched your channel for a year now and we don’t always agree but that’s what makes people different but I have learned a lot from you and what to listen for, I respect any man who can tell the truth and stick to his guns be dammed what anyone else thinks. Thank you and you have a life long fan of your channel. Please keep up the great job you do.
Hey I really can’t say who is the best band of all time because it really depends on your taste but this Band is my favorite! They just wrote great songs and the Guitar army was untouchable.
Be you Drama! Say what you feel! That Southern Rock is shaking up those old "NC boy vibes" you've still got! Skynyrd has NEVER BEEN meek, mellow mood, music! Peace, love and stay safe!🔥🤘
Hey Drama I'm 61 years old i was about 17 or 18 I've loved southern rock all my life but what i want you to know i love your reaction to all the songs i love the honesty and im glad you like elvis Presley of course i should have been one of these guys girl but i missed out lol.
Many years ago I was dating a black girl. Long before it was as common as it is today. I took her to her first rock concert which was ZZ Top. The look on her face when they opened was one of complete shock. She had no idea of what she was about to experience.
Reacting to skynyrd, Allman bros, and Marshall Tucker would give you a good foundation. Fun fact - some feel that Duane allman playing as a studio guitarist on Otis Redding's cover of the Beatles Hey Jude was start of southern rock. May want to check that out
Southern Rock, huh? Try Georgia Satellites and see what you think. Any of these will get you started: "Battleship Chains" "Keep Your Hands To Yourself" "All Over But The Crying" "Six Years Gone" or "Shake That Thing"
I agree with Tim Snow...In excess of seven minutes of musical bliss, with Ronnie’s brilliant double entendre! Rotating favorite for me as it’s impossible to select just one ‘73-77’ Lynyrd Skynyrd Gem! LOL Quoting the late & great Charlie Daniels, “Fly On Proud Bird, You’re Free at Last!”
This is awesome! And yes sir, you've missed a lot , but you are here now. Heard this song many times over the years. Told my wife about it 10 years ago and she never heard it. "ooh ooh that smell"
Southern Rock died when Ronnie did. Charlie Daniel's has a song that pays tribute to Elvis, Janis Joplin, and Ronnie Vanzandt. I believe it called Heaven will be proud. You have the fever my friend! Nothing great after this album due to the crash in 1977. Do T for Texas from the One More From the Road album. That is their best live stuff. Keep on doin' your thing!
One of my all time favorite songs. I recommend this often but no one ever listens to me. Bought this album a few days after release. ( Yeah with the original album jacket that got changed after the plane crash) still got it. Was planning on seeing them at the time but the crash was just a few days before the tickets went on sale here.
Great reaction!! This is actually an anti-drug song. They saw what was happening to them and other bands around them it was time to quit that stuff. “Gimme Back My Bullets” and “Gimme Three Steps are two you should check out!
Fantastic reaction to a great, great song with lyrics about where the abuse of alcohol and drugs can lead: Ooooh that smell The smell of death surrounds you. 🔥🎸🎸
Nnh, we want you to be you brother! Your reactions are always spot on. The "flavors" of Skynyrd and Molly Hatchet are damned slicy right. They straight up assault your ass with their brilliant guitar playing while telling the story of the song.
You could have definitely hung out with us back in the 70s. This was an anti drug song Ronnie wrote after Gary Rossington nearly killed himself in a drug and alcohol fueled car crash. "tomorrow might not be here for you"
From an old lady now , I'm not looking for high minded BS I just love seeing this fabulous music I grew on live on in the souls of you young people. Like it say's in a song what the world needs now is love sweet love. Enjoy
Can we just give a big shout out to the backup singers!! Those ladies punch it out.
They’re authentic. Nothing fake about them . My favorite group of all time.
That song is a master class in musicianship, arranging, songwriting, execution, you name it.
"The smell of death surrounds you. Angel of darkness is upon you". Written for a band member who almost lost his life because of driving while wasted.
Isnt it ironic he is the last one standing?
Hey bub Artimus Pyle the drummer is still alive . He’s from Louisville KY.
It was also about Allan Collins as he had a crash the same weekend but Gary was injured more. Had to cancel tours.
The Pusher by Steppenwolf (In Sterophonic too)
Artimus is still alilve... but Bob Burns was the original drummer...recording wise....he was on the the 1st 2 albums...but Artimus is a great drummer and really added alot when he joined..
Perfectly stated Cuzco. There is a Me/Tube video where he talks about it. If you wish to watch, Dramasyed. Cheers
The most rockin'est anti-drug song in history, I believe.
It's not a song that advocates drugs at all, it's sole intention is to dissuade drug use
Steve Gaines brought a whole new element to the band. It's sad to think about what direction they would have taken had they survived.
For sure, he was a master.
Yep, and that was Gaines on that first guitar solo. It was a thing of beauty. Ronnie said "I better look out 'cause this dude is gonna end up taking over the band!" Ronnie was that impressed with his talent.
Oh man, Gaines was smokin hot...gave the other guys a kick in the ass!
Ronnie once said. "Someday we'll all be living in his shadow."
They would’ve been the greatest rock band of all time
They are the gold standard for guitar rock!
Lynyrd Skynyrd was the best band of all time the only band in history the truly knew how to use 3 amazing guitar players....can you think of another song where the back up singers scream HELL YEAH!!! LOL
Thank you again for more 'Skynyrd.
Please don't forget about
"Call Me The Breeze".
😊✌
Oh yeah, the Knebworth performance.
Yes. It’s a great cover of a typically expertly-written song by the one and only JJ Cale of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
True Breezy...
“the smell of death surrounds you” sadly prophetic. Legendary band!
most of times i hear 'the smell that surrounds you', even i know its 'death surrounds you'
Nothing against Free Bird (I love Free Bird), but this is my absolute fav Skynyrd song: , the message, the background vocals, and the guitar work on this song is impeccable. A cautionary tale that many back then did not heed. Love this song. The Allman Brothers are a great Southern Rock Band .
LOVE some Allmonds... w/ Bozz Scaggs....hollar

Guitarist Gary Rossington was Driving a brand new car when the oak tree was in the way. One More From the Road is a great live album.
My all time favorite band!!! Glad you enjoy them

Yes. Call me the breeze. Really fun song.
We lost half the band in a terrible plane crash but their legacy will live forever in our hearts. Thanks again man.
"honky tonk nite time man" their cover of a Merle Haggard song Steve Gains guitar picking is insane 👍👍✌️♥️
The music had meaning in the 60's 70's and 80's....blues, rock, funk r+b.....its a journey through history and meaning.
It’s actually an anti drug song. Funny thing is this is, this was our battle cry for partying back in the day.
The most soulful southern rock song perfect 💯 masterpiece
One of the best! I personally love "Curtis Loew" as my favorite, but this is a song with a deep meaning to addiction! Thank you for doing your own research and giving us this review.
One of the best American bands ever
"The SMELL OF DEATH SURROUNDS YOU"
Speaking of Southern Rock you have to try Molly Hatchet "Flirting with Disaster" if you haven't done it already. If you like Skynyrd you will love it.

I read it was about where, one of the guitarist (Rossington) had crashed his new car after a drug and alcohol binge and then.. the realization came.
Try out their album Nuthin Fancy it's my favorite of all their albums and it doesn't get as much air time as the others. Might be one of their top 3 songs....This song is genius....period.
The second solo is played by Steve Gaines. He most always played a strat Gary Rossington played a les paul Allen Collins play a firebird or explorer. You can tell who is playing. Needle and The Spoon is another great song about drug abuse.
Nice request for come back...follow-up jam..🤘🤘🤘
Hey I really can’t say who is the best band of all time because it really depends on your taste but this Band is my favorite! They just wrote great songs and the Guitar army was untouchable.
You have great sound on this. And it deserves it!
Tell true you'll never know truth unless you speak true
Be you Drama! Say what you feel! That Southern Rock is shaking up those old "NC boy vibes" you've still got! Skynyrd has NEVER BEEN meek, mellow mood, music! Peace, love and stay safe!🔥🤘

You should really react to the workin’ for MCA live at knebworth. I’m subscribing and hoping to see it soon 😁
Needle and the spoon is another really good one. These 2 are not as mainstream as some of these that you’ve done. But they’re my favorites
This is a specific sub-genre southern rock,, It’s some of the best every.. my favorite of the rock and roll variations
Many years ago I was dating a black girl. Long before it was as common as it is today. I took her to her first rock concert which was ZZ Top. The look on her face when they opened was one of complete shock. She had no idea of what she was about to experience.
Definitely a precautionary Tale they had definitely been down that road
Song :::Trust your old friend...Molly Hatchet. Please Sir
Now that is some good music for my afternoon coffee break👍🏻👍🏻
On the Hunt and Searching 🔥🔥🔥
Just can’t go wrong with LS. You won’t find a bad song. The Breeze should definitely be next. Thanks brother, love you!
Rockn southern REBELS! Lyrics speak truth regardless of culture! Awesome guitar rifts! Message sent.
Reacting to skynyrd, Allman bros, and Marshall Tucker would give you a good foundation. Fun fact - some feel that Duane allman playing as a studio guitarist on Otis Redding's cover of the Beatles Hey Jude was start of southern rock. May want to check that out
Yes. Please react to otis Redding's hey jude.
This one reminds me of my late best friend's ex husband. Great song. You've got a lot of good times ahead of you, exploring Skynyrd. 😊✌️💜💚💛
Southern Rock, huh? Try Georgia Satellites and see what you think. Any of these will get you started: "Battleship Chains" "Keep Your Hands To Yourself" "All Over But The Crying" "Six Years Gone" or "Shake That Thing"
Great reaction to a great band!🤘🎸👊
Been listing to this since 1979. Great music lasts no matter what trends come and go. Welcome to the real world of music. I’m soooooo glad your here
"Take your time" is a fun one from these dudes ! Not overplayed .. Thanks Drama
🤘🤘😎
I agree with Tim Snow...In excess of seven minutes of musical bliss, with Ronnie’s brilliant double entendre! Rotating favorite for me as it’s impossible to select just one ‘73-77’ Lynyrd Skynyrd Gem! LOL Quoting the late & great Charlie Daniels, “Fly On Proud Bird, You’re Free at Last!”
This is awesome! And yes sir, you've missed a lot , but you are here now. Heard this song many times over the years. Told my wife about it 10 years ago and she never heard it. "ooh ooh that smell"
I’m glad you’re a Skynyrd fan! You should try “the needle and the spoon “ , “t for Texas” or “travelin’ man”. All great songs.
That Smell & The Needle and The Spoon were both 70's interventions done Skynyrd style.
Epic band....epic song. Skynyrd is one one the greatest classic rock bands..... southern rock icons.
While you're in the Southern Rock rabbit hole, don't miss the Outlaws, particularly their epic "Green Grass and High Tides."
Or Blackhawk in the country genre it’s really all the same
Glad to see you back on the channel. Much love to you ❤
Southern Rock died when Ronnie did.
Charlie Daniel's has a song that pays tribute to Elvis, Janis Joplin, and Ronnie Vanzandt.
I believe it called Heaven will be proud.
Charlie and Ronnie were best friends.
There is a line that saids in the song.
It was October in St Louy town. When we heard that the Free Bird fell to the ground.
We all said a prayer before we went down to play.
And Ronnie my buddy above all the rest.
I miss you the most and I love you the best.
So thank you for another great reaction and stay safe
You need to jump into some .38 Special then too if you like Skynyrd.
38 know dought
You keep on going right down that Skynyrd rabbit hole. We'll be right there with you.
Glad you became a Skynyrd fan, my favorite all time band. They RULE!!!!! Love your reactions
Checkout georgia satellite keep your hands to yourself
The Smell of Death Surrounds You! Deep Stuff!!
Fantastic reaction to a great, great song with lyrics about where the abuse of alcohol and drugs can lead:
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you.
🔥🎸🎸
Been a fan or fanatic since 75 love this band LYNYRD SKYNYRD !!!!!!!!!!!
Nnh, we want you to be you brother! Your reactions are always spot on. The "flavors" of Skynyrd and Molly Hatchet are damned slicy right. They straight up assault your ass with their brilliant guitar playing while telling the story of the song.
