R.I.P. Gary Rossington. The song was written about his experience and gary just passed away.Recently. He was the last surviving member of the original skynyrd
This song was written after band member Gary Rossington wrapped his car around an oak tree while wasted (first verse) and survived. Ronnie Van Zant nicknamed Rossington "Prince Charming". Three days after the album's release the plane crash that killed members of the band happened. Gary Rossington was one of the members that survived.
The album was released just before the plane crash, some had hit the market. The record company removed the flames and re-released the album again. Great reaction and Congrats.
I still have the LP with the flames cover; I was 16 and bought it the day it came out. Such talent, taken so young. Tragedy seemed to follow the survivors, too.
My Dad was an alcoholic. He quit before I was born, but he passed away when I was 12. But I am his daughter, and for a while, during some dark times in my life, I did drink too much. And not socially, alone, at home, which is really sad. Becoming too poor to buy it anymore is what finally got me to stop. No rehab, just knew if I wanted to keep my home I had to pull it together.
This came from personal experiences. Gary Rossington, guitar player, actually crashed his brand new car into an oak tree, got hurt severely. They all struggled, in the band.
Turns out the drugs weren't what got them. Sometimes we're here for a good time not a long time. I'd rather live a fun exciting life and die young than live to be 90 and have no experience. I've dabbled in about any drug you can imagine and never be hooked on anything. It's all about will power. At the end of the day the key to anything is understanding your limits and doing things in moderation.
It's insane that the frontman wrote it as a warning to his bandmate to not lose himself to drugs or he'd die, and in a few days after the album's release, the frontman, and several others were killed in the plane crash.
I bought this album the day of the plane crash. It came over the radio about the crash on the drive home. The cover with the flames is the original. They did a cover after the crash without the flames.
This song takes me back to hanging out with this guy in our neighborhood. He was like the Johnny no good in the hood. This song was playing at his house and I remember it leaving an impression on me at the time, knowing that this guy really liked to party it down. He never did stop but it was actually brain cancer that got him in his twenties. 😢 Another great reaction ❤
Congrats on your sobriety!.......and great reflection and honesty in your reaction......definitely my favorite LS song (released just months before their plane crash).
Here I am again, Saeed!!! My life apparently is full of memories I thought were inconsequential!!!! Was I ever wrong!! YES, I have a story. In 1977 Lynyrd Skynyrd was supposed to play in Baton Rouge, La. I had tickets and was ecstatic in anticipation of the concert! Unfortunately, in route to the venue due to pilot error the plane crashed!!! I was heartbroken as were millions in America!!!! This experience was forever in my heart & soul!!!! No doubt they were then & still are the Kings of Southern Rock!!!
Hi Donna! That is a heartbreaking story. I have read a bit about their story since my first reaction. And to hear first hand of someone who was going to see them. That truly is heartbreaking.
You’ll never go wrong with skynyrd their music and brutally honest lyrica are killer my favorite band since 1974 the original only music awsome guitar sound
Aerosmith walked out onto the tarmac to fly to their next stop on their tour, heard the engines and saw the double propeller airplane they were ready to board and said no way are we getting on that old sick sounding plane, they booked another plane to fly on, sadly about a month later that was the same plane Lynard Scynard got on, a couple of the band members declined boarding and Ronnie ( the singer) said oh c’mon man it’s fine, if it’s your time it’s your time. As mentioned in another comment the original cover of the album was pulled immediately, guitarist Steve Gains is the one in the middle on fire, he was killed along with his sister who was called just a day or two before to fill in for a few gigs to sing backup vocals ( she had done this before when one of the three female backup singers were sick or any other reason they had to miss a show ). I can’t imagine having to be the one who had to call their Mother to let her know both of your children were killed tonight in a plane crash. Both pilots and Ronnie Van Zant lost their lives that night as well. The “ Bad” engine they heard before boarding ( same thing Aerosmith heard too ) it failed about 2 hrs into their flight, the pilot and co pilot couldn’t get it started again so they transferred the fuel from the bad engine over to the good one, because with fuel now pouring all over the bad engine a possible fire was more than possible it would still fly with one engine but it would need more fuel to get to a safe place to land, however probably because of panic the pilot accidentally transferred the fuel from the good engine to the blown out one and the other engine obviously stopped, dead silence in the plane, no engine sound as they were losing altitude at an alarming rate, the pilots did their best to keep control of the plane and fly it like a glider towards an open field they could see in the distance, the forward momentum was of course getting slower and slower they were about half a mile away ( not far at all when flying ) from landing safely on the field but they all heard tree branches breaking and the plane started shaking as the sound of the branches breaking got louder and louder and more violent until it sadly smashed into the bottom of a giant tree splitting the aircraft apart. Mr. Pile the drummer, injured limped in pitch dark through this forest swamp area to get help, the survivors that were trapped in the plane were just waiting for alligators and snakes to come get them, but thankfully they didn’t and help soon arrived. Theres actual news footage here on UA-cam of Keyboardist Billy Powell answering questions from a reporter with blood and gashes on his face, I think at the crash site if I remember correctly, he became the unofficial spokesperson from the local hospital they were all taken to, everyday he would be on the news giving updates on his band mates conditions. I can’t remember what his name is but here on UA-cam I saw a mini documentary about the crash from a passenger who survived he was the main lightning guy for the shows, details of the flight to horrible details from going down and crashing. On his channel he had a bag and would blindly reach in and grab an old all access pass of his from all the different bands he toured with who hired him and his lighting company during the 1970’s. He would talk about that band and that particular tour and all the funny stuff band members did on the road. There was nothing funny about his last tour. When he pulled the Lynard Skynard pass. I got the chills.. The video was titled something like “ Think you know about the Lynard Scynard plane crash, I was there “ He’s had something like 19 different surgeries on his leg over the years and still has trouble walking, from the crash. He does something he said he would never ever do in the video, he revisits the crash site for the first time ever many years later and a camera crew goes with him. I’ll start searching for it and post the link if I can find it. Fascinating but sad for obvious reasons.
Lynrd Skynrd’s musicianship and truth telling in song are gifts to humanity IMO. Their catalog is vast although their history is tragically too short. Great song and reaction. ✌🏽
This is my favorite LS song! I decided to get rid of "That Smell" 1/2/2015. Free and clean from heroin for almost 10 years and haven't looked back! The only New Years resolution I ever kept!
3 days after this song was released their plane crashed.killing ronnie van zant, steve gaines n his sister. the record company took the flames off the cover.
Congratulations on your sobriety. Great job, and thanks for another Great reaction to Skynyrd as well. There is so much more to explore with this band on their 5 studio albums and one live album. Thanks again.
Not really one of their best, all things considered. But it does have the distinction of being the one song repeatedly served up as a defense for an accusation that nobody ever has made.
I'm proud of all who overcome their addictions. My son, at one point, had a heroin addiction and quit cold turkey. He has been clean for about 15 years. My brother was so addicted to crack that he stole his childrens Christmas presents, my mother's wedding ring and broke into my house and stole my vcr. He's been clean for about 20 years now. This band tells it like it is. I'm proud of your accomplishments, Saeed, as I'm proud of my son and brother and others. Thank you for being so open and sincere. Much love to you and your family ❤️ 🫂 3:39
great anti drug or alcohol songs-hand of doom(black sabbath)-suicide solution(ozzy)-the pusher n snowblind freind(steppenwolf)wasted sunsets(deep purple)
Congrats on your sobriety. You really get this song and i think you get Skynyrd. There's so many more songs to explore from these guys. 5 albums before the plane crash. Not a bad song on any of them
Nice reaction congratulations on your sobriety. I can see your interpretation of the smell. As an old drug addict clean since 89 have a little different interpretation. The smell of death and the smell of powder drug use was the same. It was a nasty smell combination of vomit, cigarettes, alcohol, dirty people, stress, despair ect. Sometimes back then you go to a party, somewhere in the house people will be doing powder drugs and it would smell differently in that part of the house. The smell of death, doom and regret. Just like alcohol but different.
This album was released 3 days before the plane crash, and the album was recalled because of the flames and redistributed with a plain black background, so if you didn't buy it upon release like I did, you don't have the original cover.
Great band. I've seen them in concert several times. Sweet Home Alabama. Gimme Three Steps. The Ballad of Curtis Loew. Simple Man. Free Bird. Tuesday's Gone With the Wind
Genius song.Watch them play it in concert…3 sync guitars at the end. They did another anti- drug song called “ The Needle and the Spoon.”Another great one.
You have to check out REDBONE "Come And Get Your Love"! Classic Americana, REDBONE INDIAN TRIBE!!!! Also Randy Newman, from rag- , tag jazz to rock & roll and everything in between, "Louisiana 1927", this song epitomizes what is happening today in America with weather modification!!! This is my home state that I never wish to leave!!!! Another band of my youth, AMERICA, "You Can Do Magic"! Michael Martin Murphey, "WILDFIRE"!!!
A habit is a form of addiction, that feeds and incites a worsening addiction. The underlying damages of a dangerous addiction are re-enforced by a calmer addiction of habit.
they wrote this song about a band member to let him know he was killing himself the words the smell of death is aroud you doesn't mean the smell of drugs and alcohol it means he is starting to rott from the inside out and killing himself
Drugs took a brother And A sister. No good comes from it… just death . Unless you get the chance to save yourself.. too many dont.. congrats to all who lived!
A dark but important message that people need to hear. But as you’ve experienced all the logic in the world fails to warn you off when confronted by that addictive need. Appreciate your honesty and so happy that you were able to free yourself from it but know that it’s just one step away. Also, congrats on 40K viewers forgot to mention it the other day when I noticed it!
YEAHHH, R.I.P☹TO ( RONNIE VAN ZANT ) THE BAND LEADER AND SONGWRITER , HIS BROTHER WOULD PICK IT BACK UP 10 YEARS LATER IN ( 87 ) BUT THEY WOULD NEVERRRR BE THE SAME SAEED, TRULY TRAGIC!😮 ALSO R.I.P TO STEVE & CASSIE GAINES AND THE 2 PILOTS!
Ronnie VanZant never wrote down any of the lyrics to hos songs , kept it all in his head saying " If you have to write it down to remember it , then it ain't worth remembering " which is remarkable considering the substance abuse he put himself through RIP FREEBIRDS 🎸🤘✌️🙏🇺🇸❤️
I always felt their female backup singers were so great. 🎶🎵 I believe one of them (Cassie??) Sister to one of the band members, also died in the crash. Community....you'll correct me if i got any of that wrong 💚
#That Smell #LynyrdSkynyrd #SaeedReacts Yes musically this song "slaps"..has the "hooks" as today's vernacular goes...yet the truth goes way beyond the music..the lyrics can be about drink, smoke, jabs, snorts, sex, shopping or money..whatever gives you the rush... Sadly our cultures have devolved to base fulfilment from the influence of movies and pop-star lives...to have it all you have to allow it all..smh..vice became a way of life...morals, homes, family were and even today still are the victims of our hedonistic lifestyles... Even though the song was prophetic in its writing..it was celebrated by the very ones it was singing to in abandon on dance floors, apartment floors, car seats..wherever they were or ended up... I'm not without history..anyone over the age of consent has at least a knowledge of going too far or leaving something too late...in my old age I pray nightly for the souls of humanity...you my friend have been blessed to have opened your eyes..may you always see... 🌿🌿🌿
It is very possible that those same people that celebrated this song, might have a different perspective on it now. Learned the hard way. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment.
I’d like to hear your take on one of Joplin’s sadly neglected sleepers from that era: “Farewell Song” on the album “Live at Winterland ‘68” by Big Brother and the Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin. - -
Glad to hear you stopped if if you knew it was destroying you physically, emotionally, relationship, whatever. Unfortunately some don't. "Tuesday's Gone", "The Ballad of Curtis Loew", "Gimme Back My Bullets" are a few more of MANY Skynyrd classics. Some even more popular. I'm sure you probably had suggestions for "The Needle and the Spoon" which hits straight to the point. Another song relating to the topic worth listening to is "The Pusher" by Steppenwolf.
HEY SAEED! 😊SO YOU SEE THE FLAMES ON THE COVER? THAT REPRESENTS THE HORRIFICCCC PLANE TRAGEDY! 😮☹THEY RELEASED THIS GREAT ALBUM ( STREET SURVIVORS ) BOTH WAYS, WITH & WITHOUT THE FLAMES! SO YOU NEED A GREAT PIANO BANGER FROM IT : I KNOW A LITTLE 👍BE WELL MAN! 💯
R.I.P. Gary Rossington. The song was written about his experience and gary just passed away.Recently. He was the last surviving member of the original skynyrd
Yeah to understand the song you really have to know the band history. This album was their last and they were at the height of their career.
Yep “Prince Charming” Ronnie Van Zant called him.
Check out another song by this band. "The needle and the spoon "
"Whiskey bottles, brand new car, oak tree your in my way", one of the greatest beginnings of a song ever!
Imo "Oak tree" is wisdom, under the influence of anything addictive makes one to throw out all reason, conscience, inhibitions, etc.
@@PowAngel It actually happened to Gary, brand new car, drunk and he smashed into an oak tree.
@@Scubaman1 it was Quaaludes that was high on.
@@bamacopeland4372 Nope - Search fob Ronnie’s interview as he explains it. Someone is feeding you garbage and you’re just slurping it up.
THE drug of choice bk then😢. Sad . Took soo many too. Young
Spot on, almost exactly what I was going to comment.
The Needle and The Spoon is another Lynyrd Skynyrd tune. One thing about this band is, they don’t mince words.
Must check that one out.
Brutal honesty. I like that!
That's true, RVZ was always 100% genuine with his words
The Needle & The Spoon by Neil Young as well. Hand of Doom by
Black Sabbath
The album was released just before the plane crash, some had hit the market. The record company removed the flames and re-released the album again. Great reaction and Congrats.
Thanks for letting me know about that.
My brother has this album cover. I offered him $1000 for it and he declined!
My Dad has a copy of the album with the fire cover. I don't even think he owns a phono
I still have the LP with the flames cover; I was 16 and bought it the day it came out. Such talent, taken so young. Tragedy seemed to follow the survivors, too.
I have 1 of the original album covers
That Smell has some of the finest guitar solos ever! But what a serious topic!
Good for you! Life sober is Soooo much better. ❤
There is still a beautiful life available to you. I hope you succeeded. Truly.

This came from personal experiences. Gary Rossington, guitar player, actually crashed his brand new car into an oak tree, got hurt severely. They all struggled, in the band.
Also, allen Collins, who also got hurt in wreck before Gary but wasn't hurt as bad.
Turns out the drugs weren't what got them. Sometimes we're here for a good time not a long time. I'd rather live a fun exciting life and die young than live to be 90 and have no experience. Thanks! And congratulations on 12 years. That's awesome!

The cover with the flames is the original. They did a cover after the crash without the flames.
I didn’t know that. Makes the lyrics come more alive.

there is a smell that others smell coming off of hard drug users when they start to rot from the inside out

The underlying damages of a dangerous addiction are re-enforced by a calmer addiction of habit.

Drugs took a brother And A sister. No good comes from it… just death . Unless you get the chance to save yourself.. too many dont.. congrats to all who lived!
One of my all time favorite songs. The riff is so good.
Other favorites :
strangle hold by Ted Nugent and cocaine by Eric Clapton
A dark but important message that people need to hear. But as you’ve experienced all the logic in the world fails to warn you off when confronted by that addictive need. Appreciate your honesty and so happy that you were able to free yourself from it but know that it’s just one step away. Also, congrats on 40K viewers forgot to mention it the other day when I noticed it!
It always travels with me for sure. It's easy to reach back to that place, so i need to stay vigilant at all times.
Thanks so much!
I’m sure others have said it , another song of theirs to check out would be the needle and the spoon
That one is on my to do list!
Perfect song love you
Ronnie VanZant never wrote down any of the lyrics to hos songs , kept it all in his head saying " If you have to write it down to remember it , then it ain't worth remembering " which is remarkable considering the substance abuse he put himself through RIP FREEBIRDS 🎸🤘✌️🙏🇺🇸❤️
I always felt their female backup singers were so great. 🎶🎵
I believe one of them (Cassie??) Sister to one of the band members, also died in the crash. Community....you'll correct me if i got any of that wrong 💚
Similar tune is The Needle and the Damage Done by Neil Young....their nemesis perse
Will add that one to my list. Thanks.
I would love to sit down with you for conversation: you are very philosophical. Enjoy your reactions and evaluations to the music I grew up on.
Would be a great conversation for sure! Have a wonderful day!
The south will rise again🤘

Yes musically this song "slaps"..has the "hooks" as today's vernacular goes...yet the truth goes way beyond the music..the lyrics can be about drink, smoke, jabs, snorts, sex, shopping or money..whatever gives you the rush...

Definitely want to get into her music as well. Thanks for the recommendations.
It definitely was getting progressively worse.
Thanks so much for watching and the recommendations!
Thanks for letting me know!
@@SaeedReacts. Of Course! 🙂
"Oak tree you're in my way" Ronnie had a premonition after Gary's accident
You are right...fun while it lasted, but it's shit really.
It really is.
This is an anti drug song.
