  • This is gonna be a long video but I'm getting close to finishing the longboard. In this video I sand the hotcoat on the longboard, apply a pin stripe and glosscoat to the sanded surfboard. In the previous video I hotcoated the surfboard, see below for the playlist for the video.
    If you want to know all the steps for how to make a surfboard check out some of the other build series I have done below. I've finished this surfboard and getting around to editing the videos now. More to come.

    What are the overall material costs? Round about? Great job by the way. Pin stripes had me in awww.

      Thanks! Hmm good question (USD)
      Blank $120
      Resin $100-150
      Fiberglass cloth $50-75
      Misc parts, leashplug, ventplugs, handle: $30
      Also the cost of the resin is harder to estimate as I buy it in large quantities, so more you buy the cheaper it is. Hope this helps, may do a video on costs someday. Thanks for the question.

    On the resin pinlines - yes, I had all those issues you mentioned... I went over the tape (3m automotive) 3x, but it bled. Resin was too thin and not enough pigment so it ran... Should have waited for it to partially kick, so I reapplied when it did with the extra in the pot... Then it was way too thick of a line, but sanding off was blotchy (not enough pigment per thickness and thickness variation with sanding)... In the end I sanded it off and will be applying Liquitex acrylic marker today. Side note - I think the tape bleed might be a result of running tape too soon after wiping with ethanol. I have had no issue with resin bleeding on the 3m tape otherwise. Thanks a million for these videos!

      Just an update - the Liquitex Acrylic marker worked great. No bleed under the tape, no need to sand dries quickly - I glassed over it about 24 hrs later with no issues. Definitely the way I will do pinlines in the future!

    Great video series. Ive watched all your surfboard videos. I was wondering if you could perhaps show some of your earliest boards you made to get an idea of how the resin ages and colours over time?
    just a thought, thanks again

  • @Helic4

    Hey ! Nice video as always ! I've been having an issue with my gloss/hot coats, they always seem to get some very small holes, or small places where the resin doesn't want to go to. It's been a true headache ! Do you have any suggestions ?

  • @morkusmorkus6040
    @morkusmorkus6040 3 роки тому

    Quick question: When you lay down the hotcoat within the tape dam at the fin end of the bottom, how deep should should the epoxy resin be? Can you go too deep? I just hot/fillercoated my first board and I feel like its too deep...around 2-3mm. Should I sand it down as far as possible or just go with it and sand it until I get a square edge? I imagine 2-3mm wont affect the tail rocker too much, so unless it too weighty or something then I feel it should be fine?
    Also, do you still want people to send in pics of their boards? I'd love to show mine off when its done. Not long now. You were my main inspiration and your videos were most of my guide (though I did do a lot of reading online, but when push came to shove I always watched the relevant videos of yours for the step I was up to just before doing them to make sure I had it all down pat).
    Thanks from Victoria, Australia 👍

    You inspired me to build a board.. Anyone know if you can epoxy over wood stain or if using thermochromic pigment would work in a surfboard coming in and out of the water??

    • @AndrewWorkshop
      @AndrewWorkshop  4 роки тому

      You can epoxy over wood stain once it dries well. Not sure about the theromochromic pigment tho. Good luck on the board!

      I would be careful what type of stain... Oil based might be problematic to epoxy over. Water based would be best, but often those are inclined to fade in the sun (or at least interior stains). If the epoxy has enough UV protection, it might be fine. Might be able to try a clear acrylic spray coating with UV inhibitors worst case?

    excellent videos.. started with making a blank and all the rest ..just curious I was looking for some info on where you live ..are you on the east coast Halifax..? I'm semi retired between Tamarindo Costa Rica and Toronto , but might relocate to Halifax for the summer months and interested where you surf ? Thanks

    • @AndrewWorkshop
      @AndrewWorkshop  3 роки тому

      I am on the east cost, good place to surf when the hurricanes roll by as long as you can deal with cold water most of the time 😂. Can get really busy those days tho, surf scene has grown like crazy here at least in the summer months. The summer weather can be temperamental tho, rain and windy, also the best waves generally are not during the peak summer heat but at the end of the season. Like this past weekend it was overhead due to the hurricane (water was still freezing but worth it).

    Hi Andrew. Are you still putting vents in your EPS boards?

    • @AndrewWorkshop
      @AndrewWorkshop  3 роки тому +1

      Yup I am, covered it in the next video. Not really necessary since it's a pretty dense foam but I like to include them as an insurance policy.

  • @edwardambridge4488
    @edwardambridge4488 4 роки тому

    oh sorry also wanted to know if you have made a SUP ..that I think I will do when I get back to T.O ..if I can ask a question', do you suggest multiple stringers for a SUP Thanks again

    • @AndrewWorkshop
      @AndrewWorkshop  3 роки тому

      I have made a SUP, I only used one stringer and it was plenty strong but I don't have a ton of experience with really large paddle boards but I'm thinking it's more of a personal preference on how you want it to look, with the caveat that the foam used is of a high density. The combination of the strength of the foam, type of resin used (epoxy or poly) and the glassing schedule is probably more important.

      True, but there is no fibreglass dust here in this video. He is sanding the hotcoat/fillercoat so he is only sanding epoxy resin.
