    Having sanded and glassed about 5k boards in my time all done with a vary speed sander polisher i can confirm its the tool for the job .I custom adjusted my sanding pads to add a slight curve to stop edge catching .Rails i did by hand 60 grit then a soft pad 2 interface pads on the sander slower speed .When your working on piece work A fixed price per board getting it done quickly is paramount .On filters i used 3M vapour for glassing and switched to my own made dust filters by taking the vapour cartridge apart and and tripe ling up with particle filter pads inside .When your sanding all day even with a 2 foot extractor fan in the room its dusty .Great video .Retired now haven't sanded a board for 12 years now .PS i was the first in uk to trial the auto net Velcro sanding discs they are way better than paper especially where polishing is concerned as there are no stray bigger grit than stated partials plus there way faster .

      Very nice! 5K boards is a serious notch to have under your belt! Also very cool on your dust filter setup, I just bought a new dust extractor and am going to do a cool buildout video, designing system now. It’s funny how interesting dust extraction can be

      Funny thing with extraction we had a 2foot fan in the spray room and a 2foot fan in the sanding room wall mounted to get these to work properly you had to have the main door open so the air could move through great in summer but friking cold in winter with temps dropping below freezing at times ,Glassing was difficult

    Resin eating reminds me of a friend that told me that “you can’t truly know your board until you’ve slept together”. Not sure if he was serious or not. 🤔😆

    great video, thanks for sharing the info. how many slinky hoses do you use, to have it connected to your vacuum and connected above? 1 or 2?

    That Festool sander is really nice. I've used it. The Bosch sander is also amazing and I've used it heavily for years without issues. Festool stuff is amazing. Problem is that it's kind of like an apple product. You have to use all the products within that brands family to get the most out of it. It's like you're joining a club and then you're stuck in it. Thanks for fun video.

      Hey thanks for the insight Robert, I LOVE obsessing over tools! I really like the looks of the Bosch and have been wanting to try it out. I definitely get the feeling they have their own ecosystem for products and accessories etc…, all at top dollar, love their sander though! Robert what is your go to san paper? I’ve been trying out a bunch of different sanding screens and holed sand papers, I really like Mirka but always searching for alternatives

    Thanks for the video. What grit stages do you go through when you are glassing the boards?

    • @RockandSeaGarageBoardShop
      @RockandSeaGarageBoardShop  Рік тому +1

      Hey happy it was helpful, Just spreading the knowledge and stoke! I typically start at 120, most of my time is spent here rough sanding the board, maybe 60% of my time is spent on this grit, then bump up to 180 to get any visible sanding swirls out, probably spend 20% of my sanding time on this step, then a quick buff with 220 and then 320 to get her super slick, 10% time spent on each of these grits👍. I bought a porter cable orbital sander and I've never used one? Is there a specific way I should sand (flat, on angle)? It doesn't have variable settings so it's one speed. I tried using it to sand a ding on an older board I have laying around and the sandpaper went into the ding and ripped off.

    • @RockandSeaGarageBoardShop
      @RockandSeaGarageBoardShop  Рік тому

      Hey don't feel bad, everyone rips paper into a ding from time to time, especially a jagged one, myself included 😂👍. I sand at a slight angle typically for dings, its hard to describe, but if the ding is a vertical crack I sand perpendicular to it, so the sand paper disc is sanding from left side, over the crack, and then onto the right side. If you sand parallel with the sanding pad spinning parallel it's easy for the sanding paper to travel along the crack and get caught ripping off at the end of the ding. Hope this helps!

    Very helpful. 1 question, for your hotcoats do you add wax in styrene to laminating resin or do you buy specific filler resin? Cheers from Australia. 🤙🏻

    • @RockandSeaGarageBoardShop
      @RockandSeaGarageBoardShop  Рік тому +1

      Cheers to Ozzy friends! Depends… so for poly resin you can either buy resin that already has the wax additive, usually it’s called “sanding resin” or “hot coat” resin, some companies refer to their normal resin without the wax additive as “lamination resin”. For epoxy though at least here stateside pretty much all the epoxy brands out there just sell plain epoxy without the wax/styrene additive, you pretty much always have to buy it. It’s commonly called “additive F”. Hope this helps! Like and subscribe to support the channel!

    But does the poisonous things in the air that come from the board just go away or do I always have to wear a mask when I go inside?

    • @RockandSeaGarageBoardShop
      @RockandSeaGarageBoardShop  Рік тому

      Very good question, just when the dust is disturbed and floating around you need a mask. It will settle down onto the ground and then you can either vacuum it up or sweep it up, wear a mask while cleaning as well as you might be disturbing it and get it floating around in the air. But generally speaking as long as it has settled a couple minutes after sanding you don’t need to wear one

  • @maxcalabrese5962

    Acetone isn't especially toxic - it's used in tons of household products and even stuff like nail polish remover. And the amount absorbed through your hands is negligible. It does however tend to dry out an irritate your hands.

    • @RockandSeaGarageBoardShop
      @RockandSeaGarageBoardShop  Рік тому

      That makes me feel a little better, I’m not a scientist, but rumor is among glassers that acetone serves as a vector to transport resin molecules into your bloodstream, poly resin is pretty nasty stuff. Couldn’t confirm or deny this rumor, but still better safe than sorry

    • @maxcalabrese5962
      @maxcalabrese5962 Рік тому +1

      @@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop I would be more worried about resin and fiberglass dust entering your airways when your not wearing a mask like when cleaning up.
      While epoxy/poly probably isn't great for your skin it being absorbed into the bloodstream sounds unlikely. Especially since you're gonna be wearing gloves anyways since it's so damn hard to get clean.

      Your making me feel safer, I love making boards, such a cool art form, always try to limit my exposure to junk, would be a really bummer to sacrifice your health for it. I feel bad for all the old school original guys that didn’t wear PPE … there is some old shaper/sander quote somewhere that says something like “I don’t need a mask, just use the filter on my cigarette” 😳
