- Next up I hotcoat the longboard, which is putting a coat of resin (epoxy) over the top and bottom of the surfboard, sealing it water tight. In the previous video I tinted and glassed the surfboard, see below for the playlist.
If you want to know all the steps for how to make a surfboard check out some of the other build series I have done below. I've finished this surfboard and getting around to editing the videos now. More to come.
Here is where I placed the order for the surf supplies and they provided the blank to me free of charge for this build (affiliate link):

The reason the fin patch is slightly darker is due to extra layer cloth holding slightly more resin. This is really obvious on boards with a bottom resin tint where the fin patch will be a shade darker than the rest. Also I was taught it is best not to run fin patches (or deck patches) at a 90 degree angle to the rail as this creates a weak spot. Best to cut curved or 45 degree reinforcing patches. Keep up the good work mate, boards looking great.
Thanks for the effort you put into these videos! I've been able to learn so much!
Hey Andrew, I've had cloth show layers on clear lams too when I do a patch or fin, I believe it might be a result of the age as sometimes ill use a cloth cut off from up to 5 years ago. Either way, I think the tail patch looks pretty awesome on your board, classic!!
Andrew, have you tried adding a bit of surfacing agent (wax) to the mix? It facilitates the sanding.
Great work Andrew!
I've heard "S" glass and "E" glass have slightly different tints but don't know first hand. When I paint cars I always pull tape back on itself like you did but also away from the fresh paint to help prevent lifting. Probably wouldn't work if the resin has gotten too hard though. Your board is coming out awesome!
Muito bom, eu gostaria muito de aprender a fabricar prancha, porém é meio caro pra estudar aqui . Mas parabéns por sua habilidade. Abraço...
Hi Andrew, first of all, greatings from Portugal ! If you don't mind help me please in that issue. Which is the percentage on the hotcoating? 4% paraffin and 1%/2% catalyst? and on the Glosscoating is the same? Thank so much for sharing your work.
Thought I knew what I was doing (only on my 3rd board) and that tape ball is genius to prop up the tape line.
Any specific reason for using a multi tool over other sander options?
hola saludos me gustarie ver como fabricas una estufa a gas de diesel
Is there a specific formula for the hot coat not using adative f. Also what on Earth is wax in styrene. Thanks
Hey , please why do u use hotcoat given the epoxy is waterproof?
Home manu resin did you use ti male this board?
😃🤝👍🇧🇷
anybody knows what happens if you dont use aditive F on the hotcoat or glass, because i cant find something like that, for my proyect, thank you guys
It doesn't wet out as nice but I've done a few hotcoats/glassocoats without using it and minimal issues, BUT the surface must be free of any fingerprints, oils, greases.
@@AndrewWorkshop thanks mate, I saw like 20 videos of ur channel looking for tips to make my own, really apreciate ur job, it help me a lot even if English is not my language!
I really like it. Also check out Woodglut and plans.
traditionally a hot coat only referred to polyester resin only, Extra methyl ethyl ketone harder was added the pot life was three minutes and it was dumped on the board and spread like a mad man. the resin gave off exothermic chemical heat and was called a "Hot" coat. it cured so fast air contaminates didn't have time to stick and it didn't have time for runs drips and sags to form it was thick and it dried glossy and self leveled. Now people claim to hot coat with epoxy resin but you cant alter the ratio of harder in epoxy so it's a false claim. you are welcome. A hot coat of epoxy is a regular coat of epoxy without the altered characteristics of a catalytic hardner. In short, you can pretend to hot coat with epoxy resin but in reality, its the wrong resin type, and the wrong terminology no matter who you talk to or the book you have read.
There are different hardeners you can use with epoxy. I usually use slow to laminate (I'm not in a production environment, just making the odd board for myself), but I am now trying extra fast for the hotcoats. This is with the Entropy system. The other way you can make epoxy react faster is hotter ambient temperature or leave it in the pot a bit longer before pouring. It is an exothermic reaction and it is definitely possible for it to get out of control (smoking, flames) if one has too much volume in a pot for too long on a hot day.
I'm pretty sure you can still buy plans with all the details you need on Woodprix.
