Lyrics:
See the dark night has come down on us
The world is livin' in its dream
But now we know that we can wake up from this sleep
And set out on the journey
Find a ship to take us on the way
The time has come to trust that guiding light
And leavin' all the rest behind
We'll take the road that leads down to the waterside
And set out on the journey
Find a ship to take us on the way
And we'll sail out on the water
Yes we'll feel the seas roll
Yes we'll meet out on the water
Where are all strangers are known
If you travel blindly, if you fall
The truth is there to set you free
And when your heart can see just one thing in this life
We'll set out on the journey
Find a ship to take us on the way
And we'll sail out on the water
Yes we'll feel the seas roll
Yes we'll meet out on the water
Where are all strangers are known
See the dark night has come down on us
The world is livin' in its dream
But now we know that we can wake up from this sleep
And set out on the journey
Find a ship to take us on the way
And we'll sail out on the water
Yes we'll feel the seas roll
Yes we'll meet out on the water
Where are all strangers are known
#GerryRafferty #TheArk
The album City to city, is still a classic album, to compete with any other of modern times.
The vocals here are just brilliant. This song is just plain incredible!
Gerry's voice is like a healing balm, so smooth and comforting.
My infant son’s favorite song right now. If you watch him while he’s listening to it, you can tell he is getting lost in the vocals. God bless Gerry Rafferty.
I can’t help but get spiritual with the purity of his voice and what this song might mean.
The Ark…. Noah’s Ark ; represented Jesus Christ and his salvation of us.
It’s a nerve wracking thing to stand at the beginning of a great journey of beginning, and decide to set out on it. The Ark, and trusting to set out on that chosen vessel, represents that well.
Trust in Jesus as the Ark.
This is such a beautiful comment.
Yes, I agree. It's hard to find ppl that listen or know of this amazing singer..then to word it this way.. thank you. Sending love and prayers to you. 🙏🏻❤️
Hair standing up on the back of my neck, another classic from Gerry, still listening in MAY 2021, 76 years old and grateful that i can listen to one of the all time great musicians, been listening way before baker st, never tire of listening to his voice which has a hypnotic quality, sadly taken far too son.
Good on you Terry! I played on this track as a member of The Bushwhackers.
Terry Storey Well said! Agree 100% with everything you said..😎
76 and there, too!
Terry has said it all. Gerry Rafferty was not your usual musician and artist out to take your money for nothing. He delivered unbelievable angelic music. Heard this song in my teens. I am 62 now. It has not changed.
I'm from his home town and we love him and ate proud of his lyrics ❤
I’m not in any way a spiritual bloke, but this song lifts my soul to a new level. It’s a song for our post truth age and offers some hope for escape from the liars and charlatans who dominate the world.
You're not alone with that sentiment
Whatevers written in your heart
I'm from paisley Gerrys home town we are all awakening to it all
Sounds like you're actually a spiritual bloke! ;) ... Respect! & I so agree!
I agree that you are more spititual than you relaize. Please know that there is a vast difference between "spiritual" and "religiious" also. I have felt the same way as you described since I first heard and loved this song in the 1970s.
I think we will see Gerry Rafferty in heaven. This is a spiritual song.
One of my favorite songs off of city to city. My dad passed away in 2021 and loved Gerry Rafferty. This song takes me back to childhood and memories of my Dad
Very nice 😢🎉
Agree with all the heartfelt comments. A rare combination of spirituality, poetic talent and musicianship. His spirit lives on through his music.
City to City was the album I found in my late dad's record player whilst clearing his flat. It's now my favourite album. I played Baker Street and The Ark at his funeral
Reminds me of the wonderful 70's, happy times.
At 45 yrs old, I was a young child when this album came out. I discovered it in my early teens going thru my dad's old collection of vinyl. He still has it, and I listen to it digitally now. Just as good now as it was back then. There isn't a song on this album that I skip to get to the next.
46 Years ago you had no idea about this album.
That’s not what he means
I had the same experience with it being in my dad’s collection. A timeless message and masterpiece 😊
Have allways loved his music! Never thought he got his due as a musical artist & poet!
I listen to Gerry since childhood from Senegal west Africa
the voice of a true vocal angel singin up in heaven forever courtin the rest of the angels
Love you Jesus❤💯
I know we were directed to goodness when at 68 with my beloved dying this is giving me the peace we knew was here
pure genius pure gold and so very very missed. God bless you Gerry, may your Ark sail well, carry you home, and long may you sing new songs beneath those new skies. X
The intro to the song is performed by an Australian outfit called "The Bushwackers". Never tire of listening to City to City, an epic album from start to finish.
👍
I feel like crying every time I hear gerrys music. Magical. Love this track.
Agreed, it makes me emotional. One of my favorite albums.
Amazing songwriting and what a voice love this album got me through some dark times RIP gerry the world lost a diamond
There is literally nothing to say. Anything I could put into words would do this song, artist, and album an injustice. This album honestly is so far beyond being able to use mere words to try and describe it. Perfect is really the only word I can think of
Gerry Rafferty knew the truth was in the God of the Bible. But like many of us who believe, Jerry struggled and died young.
The song is so prophetic... I'm writing this in September of 2021.
I'm 70 years old and can say that I've never seen darkness come down on us like we are seeing today. But we have to know that we must wake up from this nightmare and be born again of water and the spirit.
Rafferty had it right! Many of us have traveled blindly and fallen. But the truth in Jesus Christ is there to set us free we will be free indeed. And we will be to be free once our heart can see the One Thing that is the reason for our existence on this planet... An eternal relationship with the creator of the universe... Then we know and have hope that we will be taken out of this world in the ark that is God's love... The Rapture.
Or we can be like the rolling stone in Baker Street and grow old ever searching for a meaningful tomorrow that will never come.
@The GameCat's out of the Gluebag-ger If I was pressed I'd say it sounds very human! God-like??? Your neighbour must be Fred Flintstone, right?
Spot on brother, you haven't done a bad job, believe me!
i love you
jevinday Agree 100%!!
Despite his fears of performing on stage, despite his self consciousness over his eyesight, despite all his demons over drinking, Gerry Rafferty’s face was as beautiful as his voice, possessing technically perfect pitch and tone, incomparable as a lyricist, and a musical genius, who knew exactly what he wanted in his music.
This is an artist for the ages.
All hail, Gerry Rafferty.
I'm proud to say he lived 10 minutes walk from my home town we just played Gerry at my uncles funeral in Paisley Pais Ley 😊
Amen to that brother...Gerry is eternal, true music, harmony, peace & understanding...
@@staceymurray9644 Condolences to you and your family.
Beautiful song and voice. Thank you for your music Gerry.❤
One of my all time favorite songs by Gerry.
I feel so blessed that I have known Gerry’s songs my whole life. He was a gift to the world!
I had this album back in the 80's and wore it out. What a great voice he had, most albums have maybe 5 good songs, this album, every single song was awesome..RIP Gerry Raferty ✝️🙏😢🎼🎵🎶
Was a young guy during the late 70s,so got to know all of Gerrys more famous tunes around that time. This one however somehow escaped me,and more bizarrely rarely gets any air time.Should be a classic.Such a beautiful song,so apt for the time s we live in.
Amen! I heard this song first in the 70s. And I have always wondered why we never hear this played on the air.
In Casablanca is where I listened to the magic album city to city the first time ,and believe me folks the whole day, I had just its echo in my ears I then realised what genius Gerry Rafferty was and always be, I loved your music and I always will so RIP gerry.
Absolute perfection, god bless your beautiful soul Gerry Rafferty ❤
A hymn of hymns
Wondrous and Wonderful ❤❤
This is such a beautiful track to open the City to City album; such a hearfelt message of hope in the lyrics, Gerry's usual talented collaboration of musicians (including the 'folky' section with the fiddle etc) and to bring the whole thing together is the absolutely fabulous vocal harmonizing.
Close your eyes and drift away with GR, peace and tranquility ❤️❤️
Audio theatre.A true melodic magician.Thank you .
These descriptions. Wow.
I Just recovered this ark treasure from an old cassete of my dad. I used to love this song when i was a kid and always have been on my mind but i didnt knew the name. Just a bliss. Love it...
I was 11 when this album was released, and it's been with me every since.
I remember when I found this album. Oh wow!!!
My favorite song of all time.
When you pass away you'll sail on the water in peace, on the most beautiful ocean you've ever seen
Good choice my friend, yes we will meet out on the water......peace buddy was brought up on Gerrys albums!
More than words is this masterpiece
Beautiful song.
Pure brilliance ! Lyrics to die for--timeless !
Wonderful.. Rip gerry
Why yes, please do re-upload the greatest album of all time!
I remember one thing that struck me and stayed with me ! In one of his interviews he said too much fame could take you to hell . Know wonder before he got famous or the band he were with got famous he would move on . Over and over again. I believe that and that’s why he is in heaven singing .
when i pass, whitch i hope will be a while... play this in my memorey
I want too...
My favourite GR song. The rhythm and tempo conjuror up the feeling of being on the water at sea!
This is a hymn
The most beautiful song… so beautifully crafted. Perfect in every way…. down to the arrangement… the guitar solo … everything..
Great classic album
Dad's favourite album.
Gerry’s a one off 😍
I love this song ❤️
This beautiful song reminds me when I was 18 years old a memory will never forget
That harmonization is grandiose and brings a tear to my eye every time I hear this beautiful song.
Definitive Gerry Rafferty
Gerry knew😊
My first tape. I still listen in 2021!
So you should,stay safe.
This has a very "Comfortably Numb" sound to it, and I love it
Do I detect a Pink Floyd affinity ?
This is such a beautiful song..
It breaks my heart.
Fckn SUPERB👌🏻
You hear music as I do. Some songs go through my soul and touches places I didn't know I had. I've always loved Gerry Rafferty but hadn't heard this one. Thank you!
Beautiful
Love this song almost as much as his major hits... very spiritual... we'll feel the sea grow...
A Song for the Ages.
R.I.P. Gerry.
Marvellous masterpiece, echoes of Fairport Convention
This is one of three songs I listen to during my annual visit to my father's grave at Arlington.
Now 78 and still listening, just hope i never go deaf
Always touches my soul
One of my favorites that I cannot for the life of me get any reactor to react to. I would say” Their loss” but I want others to experience this gem!
we will meet out on the water !
143 comments only.
For this masterpiece!?
After the COVID bullshit.
I am ready for the end.
The time has come to trust God's guiding light...
If you look closely you can see two images, both on the left. One is Billy Connolly and the other is John Byrne who is the artist behind a lot of Rafferty’s work 🙏🏻
Well spotted .. I love these sort of things
I'm ready to sail out on the journey. Thankful to have this with me.
Just beautiful!
Then one day you realize that the reason his music resignated with you is because you were one in the Son all along…. you just didn’t know it yet.
love lead the way
💕 Loved his singing!!!💕🌻
👍👍👍
Thank You Gerry. From Serbia
All in all, in my view, his best album: the pinnacle of his compositions, arrangenents, maybe even lyrics. Also, the epitome of his sound... Much missed, but what a legacy, and all too underrated...
Transcends language
💗💗💗💗
I'm not religious but I like the hymn quality to The Ark
Classic !
🥰2022 and I feel so thankful for a Almighty Power
Just wonderfull
Amazing
Profound & beautiful 😍
Good Lord I love this!
Has the same effect as Dayvan Cowboy. Boards of Canada.
scots
I just discovered this gem. Wow!
I bought this album when it came out because of Baker Street - and it's not even the best song on the album. Definitely in my top 10 albums of all time.
By the time I'd bought the album, the third single "Home and Dry" had hit the radio. Had no idea the rest of the album would maintain that level of quality from start to end! 45 years later it still has that same beauty.
THE JOURNEY IS BUT I PEOPLE I KNOW EXCEPTION "STRANGERS I KNEW .... BEAUTIFUL ❤️
Reminds me of my boy. My eldest son. lobe you Alex xx
Gerry was of course raised as a catholic and the influence - the mark😂- it doesnt leave you.
His songs in my mind are hymns of a sort with a religious message or an analogy.
Im not going to get into a lot of detail but i see this song as the catholic moving from one life to the spiritual next world meeting up with strangers who all hold the same belief in the after world.its a great song.
I was raised in the Presbyterian faith and Gerry was raised but 15 miles from me
I see no trace of the medieval practices in his songs they are spiritual but non denominational
I didnt pursue the upbringing beliefs I had im very spiritual as I think Gerry was
But I see not one trace of the medieval practices of the Catholic church and I only raise it to counter your raising of it completely unnecessary he gave out spiritual vibes not dogma and fear which sadly all Western religion encompasses
No Gerry was a spiritual poet of no denomination
End of ❤
Okay, but that cover art, though? 🏆✨🤍
The cover art is perfect!
Tu es parti un peu trop tôt à mon humble avis! heureusement que tes chosons t 'immortalisent et ce puis fort longtemps que les écoutais;... très jeune ; très très jeune; Repose en paix tu le mérite
So True with the way people worship Pop stars Movies stars, and the Bad Government in so many country's around the world Today, Very sad Situation .
