So, I’ve got to let you know that my seven-year-old son and I love to make your videos the last thing we watch before bed. I feel confident that you will be fun, creative, and still kinda chill. I love the pot and saucer one-piece planter from a convenience of movement perspective, but I’m in love with the deep swirl groove saucer with slanted bulge pot two-piece planter. Peace and happy winter!
I like them all lol , making pot planters is the reason why I want to do pottery, making some awesome pots etc for my orchids , awesome stuff , thanks for a great video. 👍
I love the one piece ones. Be sure to leave enough space that you can get your fingers in between the tray & the pot when it needs cleaning! You could make wider, shallower ones for cactus groups. Here’s a challenge: ovals! 😉
I also love the one piece planters. Potted plants come in standard size pots, which are even numbers, so making them slightly larger than the size you want, and deep enough to conceal the container, is helpful if you don't want to plant the plant directly in the planter. Hope this helps. Thanks for sharing all these techniques, you are inspiring!
Love that you did planters! Love pots and plants. My husband was just working in Minnesota and he was an hour from mocha monkey so let's hope he took my hint and got me a mug or a planter! 😉 Your work is beautiful! And your videos are soooooo informational!
I love your videos! I am a beginner at throwing pottery on the wheel. I find your videos to be very helpful, inspiring and informative. Thank you for sharing your talent.
Wow Jon, both planters are really cool!! Love the one piece, clever design! But the two piece offers more options for colour combinations. For me it depends on the type of plant wich planter I would go for. They each have an own attitude about them so the planter must be a right fit, or at least that's how I'm feeling 🙃 Looking forward to your next video's!
yea plant pots! All in one pieces are especially great for hanging plants Indoors. and two piece pots are also great so that the plate can be removed from plants that are outside so the water doesn’t pool when it rains
Omg, I love making planters! I started a succulent collection because I made so many planters. Right now most of mine don’t have a plate under them, I water them outside or the inside ones in the sink. But I definitely want to try my hand at the all in one. Love it!
The great thing about planters and other more decorative pieces, is yiu can really experiment with glazes. It doesn't matter if they craze, or leach. The single piece planters are nice, because they save you time. Anything a production potter can do, to save time, is a win. At first, I thought you were going to combine/ join the plate and vase portion, of those you threw separately. When it comes to your trimming, have you thought about getting a Giffin Grip? Some claim they are "Cheating", but they are a time saver, and can be used for more than just trimming.
I like the two piece because I like watering my plants from the bottom so I don't over water. Also you should the planters after they have been glazed.
As a very plant person, I loved them all.. I just finished watering 21 of my 61 plants today. I really like both of them but I think the one with the plate under the pot would be better. If there is too much water it would be easier to sit it in the sink and pour out extra than turn the pot on it's side. I tend to do that and end up with dirt in the sink.. Lol I just like everything you make. We actually had a little snow here in Chattanooga last night. You and your Family have a Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year.
I had an idea if you want a more start-to-finish feel: you could give each pot an ID number of some kind, and then tag each pot ID in the description of the videos in which they are featured. Also, when someone buys a piece, they could go back and see which videos it was in because the ID number would be on the pot. It might be a bit more work, but just a thought.
I like the one piece overall, but for my most delicate plants I'd prefer the removable plate so I don't have to tip the whole pot to drain and risk breaking the plant. Love your videos and can't wait to see the finished products!
Have you ever tried making an orchid pot? You'll have to look into that orchids are very popular. Good drainage lots of holes. They're a little work but lots of fun.
I prefer planters that have a separate tray for drainage because what I found on the internet is that the ones with attached saucers can still have a tendency to hold too much water and cause root rot. Or something like that. I don't remember entirely lol. But attached ones would be good for hanging pots probably.
Never knew you were on UA-cam. Glad you posted it today on Instagram. I like the upward curvy 2 piece planters. I seem to make weird rough holes for the planter. Still work in progress
I love the 1 piece planters too! What a great idea! Have you ever tried to make a planter for a Bonsai Tree? I love your work! You did not miss anything!
I wanted to learn how to make the attached drain plate! Thanks. Now that’s what I’m going to try next! Have you ever made beer glasses? I’ve made small goblets, but need to make them bigger for at least 22 oz.
I think you found a really cool thing to do. Probably people found plants bc of the pandemic. Thanks for posting. Stay well dude. Can hardly wait to see the glazing. I like the 2 piece.
So cool! This is definitely going to be a goal of mine for my pottery class! My Aloe needs a bigger pot and the one piece pots, or tbh pots with draining holes can be so hard to find! For some reason most store bought decorative pots dont have draining holes which is weird
Discovered your channel 4 days ago... love it.. really fan of your planters.. hope you'll have some new ones for sale soon.. though wonder if you send them to France...
Thanks Jon, I liked the one piece best! Truly impossible to do a start to finish in one video. Not practical. I just go back and search for the video if there is one that shows maybe the how to and then the glaze combinations.tutorial. Most likely will do that with the planters. I think they will sell very well like the mugs. Something everyone uses. Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year!
Love the one piece! Also would love some with holes it the top for hanging ;) Also, I don’t mind the videos broken up, you could also go back after you’ve posted the process and then make another video where you join them all together so viewers can see the whole process. I would watch all the videos either way, just a thought for those quick viewers:) love your stuff and that new studio!
Do you have an idea of how much clay you need for different sized planters? 4in planter 6in planter 8in planter? Didn't catch how did they were with 2 pounds.
One piece are good. I have one & love it. But I like deep watering once a week. if I preferred occasional in place watering I’d prefer two piece I expect.
So I never see you cut off your pieces, wondering if you cut at a later stage? I was always taught to cut off when you finish throwing. But I’m wondering if you cut later and if so what is the benefit?
What was that tool you used to center for trimming? I never thought to make a one piece planter; I like the idea. One tip, maybe move the holes up so the soil is above where the water drains out
Love the planter! I have been getting into them as well for some reason - must be a thing! Like many others that commented I would like to know about the white disc you use while trimming
I really want to start making pottery but I don’t know where to start. I don’t have the dooohicky thing that you used to form the clay (don’t know what it’s called) 😂 what starter advice do you have?

A one piece planter
wold be so cool. Never seen one before!
My favourite is the one piece I think that’s a great idea
Like the ones too that have holes at the top rim/ish so they can hang up on a hook. 👌
I might have missed it. How much Clay do you use for your coasters, pour overs? Will your book include clay amounts used for each bisque-ware?
One piece are great, you’ve solved some Christmas present ideas for me, I’d better get a move on. Cheers Bob 🇬🇧

I make a lot of planters too! And I think I like the built in tray ones best! They are definitely the way to go for hanging plants
This just blew my mind, never thought of how you'd add drainage to hanging planters!
yea plant pots! All in one pieces are especially great for hanging plants Indoors. and two piece pots are also great so that the plate can be removed from plants that are outside so the water doesn’t pool when it rains
I love the one piece planters, but definitely see myself trying two piece planters. Awesome video!
Wonderful thing to watch while eating breakfast this morning :) thanks Jon!
Love both, the 2 price allows me to use the drain plate on other planters but then the one piece is so convenient. Thanks for sharing.!
really like the planters with the saucer attached.
Omg, I love making planters! I started a succulent collection because I made so many planters. Right now most of mine don’t have a plate under them, I water them outside or the inside ones in the sink. But I definitely want to try my hand at the all in one. Love it!

One piece! Great to see you back Jon and thanks for sharing your skills with us.
I like 2 piece planters for larger pots and 1 piece for small ones.
Totally inspired. Thank you for taking the stress out of embarking on this journey :-)
Thanks and love the one piece ✌️

I'm so excited you made planters!! I like both styles.

That's a really good point. I guess you could use a sponge too? Not the most user friendly though
Have you ever tried making an orchid pot? You'll have to look into that orchids are very popular. Good drainage lots of holes. They're a little work but lots of fun.
Have you seen the TV show The Great Pottery Throwdown?
It is a great watch especially if you’re into Pottery.
Love the great pottery throw down. Wish they would continue with more episodes.
Love all the shapes
I like your style of pottery. Also the planters are cute! Stay throwing please ....
I am Lear Ning but will try attached plate at bottom. You make look easy! ❤️ Thanks for sharing.
The one pot method for sure!
Love making planters! question, where did you get your little piece to center your pots? what's is it called? thanks!
Johanne Levac i want to know too!
@@YaoiHoshi I use a plastic bottle cap
Yes! What is it!!
@@celtvmp it's a tool from Diamond Core Tools. Go check out their web site...it's on there. I don't know what it's called.
Trimming Spinner -- found here: diamondcoretools.com/collections/sticky-gripping-pads/products/trimming-spinner
I like the 1 piece pots. I'm going to try it. Thanks Jon
It's called a trimming spinner & you can purchase at Diamond Core in US or Sounding Stone in Canada :)
These are fantastic!!!!! I am inspired to try making one. Thx.
I like two piece planters so it is easy to dump the extra water. 4 to 5 large drain holes.
I prefer planters that have a separate tray for drainage because what I found on the internet is that the ones with attached saucers can still have a tendency to hold too much water and cause root rot. Or something like that. I don't remember entirely lol. But attached ones would be good for hanging pots probably.
Love the one piece, can't wait to see what you come up with for glazes!
So satisfying to watch it, thank you!!
I prefer the two piece one cos it's easier to just pour out the water 😀
The connected one is going to be so useful because the clay minerals can actually harm my plants if anything in unglazed so thank you so much 😁
Clever to make the holes right away...I always struggle with the angles!
you are the coolest pottery master i have ever seen :) ohyeah
Never knew you were on UA-cam. Glad you posted it today on Instagram. I like the upward curvy 2 piece planters. I seem to make weird rough holes for the planter. Still work in progress
I love the 1 piece planters too! What a great idea! Have you ever tried to make a planter for a Bonsai Tree? I love your work! You did not miss anything!
I'm partial to the one piece..all-in-one😉 Great video you are awesome!!!!!
Definitely the one piece. I will try some in the New Year. Have a Merry Christmas 🎄 🇬🇧 x
Jon what is that thing you were having on the bottom when trimming? How did I miss that
I like larger planters, but right now, I prefer cardboard boxes, cause I can afford them
One piece. Happy Chanukah and Happy Holidays to all.
I liked the one piece. Best for succulents and cactus, I think.
Idk why you remind me of brad mondo. Two amazing down to earth people. Love to see it
How did you make the indentations at an angle on that one pot? It looks so cool. Looks like sideways finger imprints from the inside out.
Hi Jon, I like the one piece. Can't wait to see the glazing video.
Great video John. Love then, but I’m very partial to one piece planters. Happy holidays!
you´re amazing!!!!!, work so relax and look so easy make a poteries, I´m beginning work with lathe and i love it!
My grand twins ASK to watch your videos:)
I wanted to learn how to make the attached drain plate! Thanks. Now that’s what I’m going to try next! Have you ever made beer glasses? I’ve made small goblets, but need to make them bigger for at least 22 oz.

I like the 1 piece, I've made 2 of them, but didn't make the bottom part wide enough. It fills too quickly.
I'm still learning, work in progress 😊
I’ve always liked the look of the one piece planters, but I’ve never used on my own plants... gonna be watching that Etsy store 👀
hello john the potter, great video but how do you make your hanging plant pots that you showed in another video? thanks
I like both planters,
for me as a guy who have plants i prefer a one piece planter its more portable for me to move plants with no worry about the plate
Whoot whoot for January! Great information! I didnt know you had a patron channel? So cool!
I really miss these kind of videos where you talk through your actions! Very inspiring. Will you go back to this format?
Which type of clay can you use for flowerpots in general? And which types make frostproof plant pots?
I love them both!
Discovered your channel 4 days ago... love it.. really fan of your planters.. hope you'll have some new ones for sale soon.. though wonder if you send them to France...
Great video. Thank you and I enjoyed both styles 👌🏻💕
Love the one piece planters! Merry Christmas from England ! 🎅
Great video. What kind of bats do you use?
Def prefer the attached drainage tray. ESP if you make it a hanging planter. Ty!!!
I ve just discovered your channel, and im already a fan! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

4in planter
6in planter
8in planter?
Didn't catch how did they were with 2 pounds.
Did you ever post the next video of them being glazed and fired?
Very cool. Love it. I’m inspired. Already tried this technique. Needs practice for sure. What’s the little white disc you’re using when you trim?
Beautiful. Love both.
What’s that white thing you use when trimming? I’ve seen some people use it but I don’t understand what it’s good for. Great video 🥰
The level?
I was wondering this too!
BudilBarbro Lindboll yes I was too
@landon welch what's it called & where can I buy it?
It's called trimming spinner & you can purchase from Diamond Core in US or Sounding Stone in Canada 😎
1:39 papyrus likes /needs to be with its roots in water. But I think it is really an exception.
I prefer the one piece most. Clever design!
Wonderful idea for the holidays. Will this method work with air drying clay?
Ok cool love the wholes then plate or saucer.. so what size is it actually after fired and shrunk?
I would like to try the one piece planter with my African violets.
You missed telling us what the new secret project is! Can't wait to find out! Love the one piece.
What type of clay is used in this video? Just starting out . We have our own greenhouse and want to make our own pots/planters. Thanks!
What kind of bats do you use? I usually blow mine cutting it off but you don’t cut them off
One piece are good.
I do cut a little later just to give the rim a little time to firm up so the shape is not changed , not sure if that’s the best way, just my habit
Do you wait a little bit before you take the pot off the bat?
What was that tool you used to center for trimming? I never thought to make a one piece planter; I like the idea. One tip, maybe move the holes up so the soil is above where the water drains out
Love the planter! I have been getting into them as well for some reason - must be a thing!
