  • 'Sister Morphine'
    Faithfull/Jagger/Richards
'"Sister Morphine" was an attempt.. [to] make art out of a pop song! Peole tend to assume that "Sister Morphine" comes from an incident in my life, that it is a parable of a junkie's last hours. But at the time I wrote it I'd only taken smack once. I was still far from becoming a junkie. "Sister Morphine" was in my head - my feelings about what it might be like to be an addict.. By 1972, when it came out on [The Rolling Stones'album] 'Sticky Fingers', I was the character in the song. You have to be very careful what you write because it's a gateway, and whatever it is you've summoned up may come through..' 'Faithfull, an autobiography', 1994, Marianne Faithfull
Here I lie in my hospital bed,
Tell me, Sister Morphine, when are you coming round again.
Oh, I don't think I can wait that long,
Oh, you see I'm not that strong.
The scream of the ambulance is sounding in my ears.
Tell me, Sister Morphine, how long have I been lying here ?
What am I doing in this place ?
Why does the doctor have no face ?
Oh, I can't crawl across the floor.
Can't you see, Sister Morphine, I'm just trying to score.
Well, it just goes to show things are not what they seem.
Please, Sister Morphine, turn my nightmare into dreams.
Oh, can't you see I'm fading fast
And that this shot will be my last.
Sweet Cousin Cocaine, lay your cool hands on my head.
Hey, Sister Morphine, you'd better make up my bed
For you know and I know in the morning I'll be dead,
And you can sit around and you can watch the clean white sheets stained red.

Just discovered this thread. Marianne's autobiography states she wrote the lyrics, Mick wrote the music. I tend to believe her. Especially since Mick to finally allow her name on the credits. But that's the cut throat music bix for ya. It can drive a person to DRUGS!

Marianne Faithfull played the parts of Lilith and a moon goddess in Kenneth Anger's "Lucifer Rising." Anger took her to Egypt to film, early 1970s. K.ANGER QUOTE: "I said to Marianne Faithfull, don't bring any drugs [to Egypt] because they'll execute you. She was addicted to heroin and had the nerve to carry some in her makeup box under the face powder..If she'd been arrested or discovered, we all would've been shot - that was the penalty then." Yikes.

She never cared about people around. She traded her own son for drugs. She was mean to Mick visiting him in jail when he took all the blame for HER drugs. Very selfish. Good she got rid of addiction but I do wonder, if she ever changed.

i wouldn't say the stones ever hid ry cooder's participation on this track. he is credited on the album sleeve. just like jack nitschze, who plays piano on the track. what more can a studio musician on a record date expect? there are many fine side musicians on many rolling stones tracks. nicky hopkins,(now there is a guy who doesn't get enough credit), bobby keys, jim price, billy preston, sonny rollins. they all got credited on the sleeve, just like ry.
its not like ry's playing the open g style that people claim keith lifted from him on this track. as you note, he is playing slide. his credit seems appropriate.

"The ultimate humiliation, my name expunged even from my own song! I suspected this was a devious way to fleece me of my royalties, so I wrote an indignant letter to Allen Klein and went to see him. Things turned out to be less dire than I had imagined. Allen explained to me that the omission of my name had nothing to do with a fiendish plot, really! He showed me a letter wrtitten by Mick and Keith early in 1969 saying I should get a third of the royalties. It turned out they had not credited me because at the time 'Sister Morphine' had been written I was still contracted to Gerry Bron, and none of us wanted to see him get the royalties. So the arrangement was that I would get royalties , but no credit. In any case, that song did well by me. I lived on the money of 'Sister Morphine' for several lean years." - Marianne Faithfull

For you know and I know in the morning I'll be dead,
And you can sit around and you can watch the clean white sheets stain red.

@@JayJay-wg5ex I am not a druggie but I have had the drip for a horrible urinary track infection. I don’t care how tough you are , you are still only human. The United States where I live has an ass backwards draconian attitude about narcotics and no that is not an endorsement of recreational use ,and abuse . Just for goodness sakes why can’t our society be rational about things . Once I was cured I said goodbye to that Sister Morphine !

@@dagnabbit6187 Yes, we are only human. Pain management is very untapped but key to our lives, everyone. How to handle strong pain be it physical or psychological should be one of the basic survival skills we learn but people just ignore it and deny it and misinterpret it which leads to all kinds of problems. It's nice to know someone understands, through Marianne's music.

Qui giaccio nel mio letto d'ospedale,
Dimmi, sorella Morphine, quando verrai di nuovo.
Oh, non credo di poter aspettare così a lungo,
Oh, vedi che non sono così forte.
L'urlo dell'ambulanza risuona nelle mie orecchie.
