Marianne broke onto the scene at only 17 after performing at various venues throughout London in her teenage years. She released her debut album the following year, and her highly publicized relationship with Mick Jagger started soon afterward. Marianne left her first husband and child in order to be with Mick and ended up losing custody of that child as a result. After her relationship with Mick dissolved in 1970, Marianne attempted suicide.
After her suicide attempt, Marianne had a nervous breakdown and was homeless for a few years while maintaining an addiction to heroin. At the end of the 1970s, she released a successful comeback album by the name of Broken English. Although the album was successful, her disastrous Saturday Night Live appearance promoting it proved that Marianne still wasn’t all there.
After over a decade of living in squalor, Marianne finally went to rehab in 1985. Though the treatment was successful, Marianne fell in love with a fellow patient during her time at the facility and the patient committed suicide while she was there. Marianne dedicated her subsequent album to the patient, Howard Tose. The album was 1987's Strange Weather, and it showcased Marianne using her new weathered voice as a blues singer.
Despite all that she’s been through, Marianne is still at it today! Having recently overcome a long battle with COVID-19 that saw her hospitalized, the singer is preparing the release of her latest album. Join Facts Verse as we take a look at the unimaginable tragedies of Marianne Faithfull.
The Unimaginable Tragedies of Marianne Faithfull - Розваги
I became a fan of Marianne Faithfull back in 1965 when "As Tears Go By" became popular here in the US. I was shocked to hear that after all of the high-flying friends, relations, and relatives she had that she actually spent several years of her life living on the streets. Unbelievable.
As someone who knows about such things, I know how this can happen. She hid it from them or she always found a way to divert the topic if it ever came up. If people really don't want to know how their family and friends are doing (unless you come out and ask directly) for most people it's usually too unpleasant a subject to address. If you have a lot of pride you wouldn't want to talk about it either. Or maybe she preferred it instead of justifying her behavior to other people. As a person with mental illness and substance abuse issues, she probably pushed people away and some people didn't want to deal with the drama, because you have to admit, people like her that have demons also can bring unwanted drama. Honestly, it doesn't matter who you know or who you are. Just opinions of course.
Addicts are extremely difficult to help, especially for friends and family. Addicts exploit the people around them. It's part of their addictive drive.
That's what addiction does.
Hard drugs will do that to you.....
@@Sab_MJsMama sounds like personal experience to me. 😉
Marianne Faithfull is a force unlike any other. She's been photographed for her beauty, photographed for her acting, her singing, her exploits, her mistakes, her failures, and just about everything in her life except maybe sitting on her john. And judged, usually unjustly, as if she's a sinner and everyone else are saints. But nobody can honestly say through her battles, her shortcomings, her highs, and her many lows, Marianne Faithfull has never lost her strength and determination to keep going. Regardless of how she's been perceived, she's never ran away or denied anything she actually did. She's no hypocrite. And as one of her biggest admirers I give her the highest of respect for that and also for some of the most extraordinary music ever recorded. A true musician and a trooper indeed. I love you Marianne. ❤️
A few more fun facts about Marianne: 1.The song Wild Horses is about her. 2.She's related to the Marquis de Sade (from whom we get the terms "sadism" & "sadomasochism.") 3.She says in her autobiography she really preferred Keith Richards & had a brief fling with him, but he gave her to Mick.
The reason her voice changed is because when she was living on the streets she became very sick with pneumonia the sickness and the coughing damaged her vocal chords.
I read the other day Marianne has recently checked herself into a Nursing Home...Hope she recovers ...All the best beautiful Lady XX
I met her Aunt in Bassingbourn near Royston Herts, who lived next to an army barracks. I worked in the barracks and met Mariannes Aunt flying model aircraft(s). I asked her one day was she related to Marianne as I knew her surname (Faithful) and she said "yes I am her Aunt"! I was surprised, but should not be because they look a bit similar. Marianne's Aunt was really nice and friendly..I shall never forget that great moment. God bless both of them.
Marianne was and is a product of her time! Many music people of that era were heavily compromised by drugs, alcohol and fame. The one endearing fact about Marianne, is that she got through all of this and still does what she does best!! SING Nova Scotia has always loved her and still does! You are one fine survivor of this world of music and we are so thank full our sweet angel!!!!!
Most surprised about her ancestry, meaning, who her parents were. Also her seemingly prolific acting career. The only 2 films I've seen are, Irina Palm and Marie Antoinette.
My introduction to this beautiful woman was in 1980 when I was employed at a record store in Dallas and, it was through the album Broken English. Before then, I lived in a communist country where British and American rock bands and pop culture was frowned upon. Basically, I spent the entire decade 1980-1990 catching up to everything and everyone I missed during my teens.
I lift my hat in awe and admiration for Miss Faithful... what a trouper!
Thank you for this very nice video.

@@FactsVerse you're very welcome. Actually, I haven't had the opportunity and time to view too many of your videos. I'll be able to give you some suggestions after I do so.
However, here's one off the top of my head that you could look into. The life and career of actress Frances Farmer. Even more tragic than that of Marianne Faithful.
Thanks for your kind reply... have a fantastic weekend.
“Why’d ya do it” expressed my feelings about my cheating ex boyfriend. Why do guys do it? We give them our love, heart and soul but it means nothing to them. The lyrics are crude and gristly but they say it all.The bitterness is ugly, as bitter as bile; a sentiment that I hid deep inside but exactly what I wish I had spit out at him. Rock on Maryanne.
That's one of her greatest songs, IMO. I saw her perform live at Slim's, a grunge club in San Francisco's warehouse district, in the early 90s. It was just her in a long black dress with cigarettes & a glass of champagne under a spotlight, with one acoustic guitarist. The stage was very low, only raised about 12 inches higher than the floor. I was up front, & she was right there, practically at eye level. When she finished belting out that song, she took a sip of champagne, looked right at me, and said, "Ah! I feel MUCH bettah now!"
Yes I totally understand. Why'd ya do it affected me in that I found it helped purge my anger and helped with my healing.
A lot of guys get upset when their girlfriends badly misspell the name of the artist they claim to love, and then they sleep with a better speller.
Her covers of Yesterday and Scarborough Fair are two of my personal favorites
Great songs! Thank you for sharing your favorites 👍
One must admire her determination. With all she has gone through and failed marriages and losing custody of her son. She has never gave up. She definely has a fighting spirit within.
Very well said. Marianne really went through a lot. Thank you for your heartwarming message to Marianne! 💗
@@FactsVerse Most Welcome!! She is an inspiration to all of us. No matter what we are going through in our lives never to give up but to keep on going.
I hope she is smiling today. You can`t change the past but you can mold your future.
Very well said! Thank you for sharing this inspirational message ❣
I always thought she had the most innocent pure beauty I had ever seen, her background and looks and talent made the world her potential stage, her spirit had to find a way to be herself as conventional success wouldn't have satisfied her, money, fame, reputation and all the establishment values meant little, she found her outlet in the abandon of booze, drugs and sex , living among the most successful and outrageous band in the world and it was poison for her because she had no boundaries and didn't care about herself, unlike Mick and the rest who valued the money and fame and didn't delve all the way, just enough to keep the rock star reputation afloat , she's the real deal having gone to the dark side and coming back.
The Ballad of Lucy Jordan in Thelma&Louise.
THAT was her major breakthrough- MARVELLOUS song as the girls drive through the desert to freedom.♥️🎶
Love her version of “The Eyes of Lucy Jordan”. Exquisite.
Nothing new really, except that she had Covid symptoms passed a year before being diagnosed. Im so so glad she recovered and I'll always wish her well.🦋❤🌷
My heart leaps out towards her as I listened to this and not in any judgmental way, but in understanding and sadness because we all have a similar journey on this highway. She is so human. I feel connected in some way and in other ways not so much; other than were all in this life, living and dying. Since it was not shared, I wonder if she has discovered Jesus and his unconditional love and grace. I enjoy listening to her voice and melody of music. I remember her voice when I was younger. I was in the goodwill the other day and found one of her CD's, 'The Best of Marianne Faithful' I especially enjoy her singing, 'Tomorrow's Calling' .The lyrics; to me anyway, parallels my relationship with Christ.Reminds me of the question I've often asked of God, where is my peace of mind? I'm sure if he replied audibly, he would say, "if you would follow me"🎵
Thank you
I knew very little about her private life
Just goes to show how even the beautiful people have ugly demons to conquer
God bless her for never giving up
The most beautiful woman of the 60s
Yes, Marianne is definitely beautiful. Which of her song is your favorite?
My 2 favorite Marianne Faithfull tunes are "As Tears Go By" and "Summer Nights." I was a teenager in the mid1-1960s when these 2 songs were popular and I have never forgotten it. She lived her life as she saw it, and it was turbulent to say the least. I am glad she survived, as some of her contemporaries didn't.
Great songs, we're glad that you like Marianne! Be on the lookout for our next video!
Tears go by......and ...this little bird, love her ❤
Dreaming my dreams of you LOVED IT 💕 🍀🇮🇪
Thanks. When she played Ophelia in "Hamlet" on the London stage, Anjelica Huston was her stand-by understudy. Cheers.
I have a play bill from that show signed by several cast members including marianne and anthony hoppkins
😁
I'd say more folks know her from "As Tears Go By" than her affair with Mick Jagger.
Agreed.
Jagger and Keith Richards wrote it.
You're joking, right?
She actually has a huge cult following in Europe & both coasts of US. This fandom has vurtually zero to do with her early hits or association with Mick Jagger, and everything to do with her comeback tour, her Broken English & many subsequent albums, & most of all, the singing voice of her older years. The early, sweet soprano voice of her 60s hits has been replaced by a world-weary, whiskey & cigarettes voice of a much more interesting woman who has actually lived. I saw her perform live at a nightclub in San Francisco's warehouse district in the 90s. She was fabulous, & that was one of the most diverse audiences I've ever been a part of-- cowboys, old hippies, gays, businessmen, techies & punk rockers. I was a fan in the 60s & rediscovered her in the 80s. I have a bunch of her albums.
@@ajcarr1965 thank you for mansplaining.
I only knew her from the song "As Tears Go By" waaaaaay back then. All the rest in this video is news to me... thank you!
She's lucky to be alive .
Miss FAithfull is one of my five favorite singers..
Nancy Sinatra, Marianne Faithfull, Dusty Springfield, Wanda Jackson & Etta James
Despite all that I always loved her music and I have most of her albums. Good music sung with a voice that's perfect for the music she sings
Jagger and Richards wrote tears go by. For her
It is unknown why her parents divorced when she was so young. I think that at least some of her worst troubles are due to this event. I also think that Mick Jagger should have made a better effort to help her during her heroin addiction. An outstanding beauty with a remarkably attractive voice, she was one of those women who suffer due to that beauty. I loved her in 1966 and I love her still.
I know "broken English" & loved it. Now, she's a senior.... at over 70 years young. Amazing
Great song! Thank you for watching our content. Be on the lookout for our next video!
Loved her music, beautiful
I first heard of Marianne thru her song Come and stay with me,a favorite of my late father and over the last ,50 yrs a favorite of mine
Life is a living tragedy for her . Wealth doesn’t assure ones mental , physical health
Specially mental health im sure she was having s big issues
My favorite song of hers when I was a wee teen was “Summer Nights” I loved her English looks on the cover of the album
As tears go by
She was going to play at The Coach House some 15 years ago but the show was cancelled. I still have the ticket I bought...
I read both her books. Very enlightening
Glad you like Marianne's books. Which of her songs is your favorite?
I’m the same age same day as her 29/12/46………….75

"Broken English" is an incredible album. I hope Marianne is well and content
I was born in 1978. I was watching a performance by the Rolling Stones on tv with my mom as a very young child. Apparently I leaned in and said, "mom, he has a square mouth". LoL, well...I wasn't wrong.😆
Fun fact. The Stones were criticized for their ruffian music style by a major DJ in London around the time she started dating Jagger. Jagger and the Stones put together a song and Marianne released it. "As Tears Go By" was acclaimed by the same DJ that criticized the Stones and Mick and proved the range of talent the Stones had. Stones also recorded the song in 1965.
It was & still is a beutiful song !!!
I think Mick Jagger has wounded a lot of women over the years, including the mothers of his children, Marianne got into the drugs thru the Stones and then she was tossed aside as if she was nothing .One of jaggers girfriends committed suicide a few years ago, and considering he is now a grandad..he still has young partners...what they see in him is beyond me...but they make sure they have babies with him to secure their futures...its all down to money.
@@Irene-qe5hu why!! But Who Made him do it
@@Irene-qe5hu MICK JAGGER IS SATAN In THE FUCKING FLESH!!!!! 😮
On Broken English, one must listen to "Why D'ya Do It", if you are interested in ground breaking insight. No mention of Anita Pallenberg? Marianne Faithfull made he choices. She certainly didn't invite any commentators to a pity party she never threw. She's an artist of some significance. Take her art. Leave her life alone.
You forgot to mention her wonderful movie; Irena Palm!
Thank God for your inner strength which has, I believe, seen you through what most couldn’t comprehend. You are, to my thinking, a magnificent woman - God bless you. J.R.
Marianna is amazing. I love that song Come My Way. She's a great lady.
We couldn't agree more! Thank you for watching our content and sharing your favorite song. Stay safe 😉
She has such beautiful eyes.
There's a brilliantly edited video of her version of "Its all over now, Baby Blue" on UA-cam, a fan created it with footage from girl on a motorcycle. The outro is great touch, as the song is heavy, about love and the life, I wont try to explain the bulk of the song, but the outro, she's cruising on, like all before was just a Wednesday or "all in a days work". Moving right along. The weight of the song proper lifts just after rolling off into a new day, the camera gives no judgement. A traveling heartbreaker like Bond or something. She very much was it seems, damn the torpedoes, at what a cost. The selected imagery from the movie, it's placement within the song, the quality of the editing and the color work, it's worth the watch next time you want to listen to the song. Think the UA-cam channel is called Elle or Estelle McCartney.
Loved Marianne's music
Us too! Which of her song is your favorite?
I saw " Girl On A Motorcycle", as a late night movie in the 90's as a young person. That is one tripped out film, but interesting.
The girl on the motorcycle is one of my favorites, the psychedelic vibe, i love everything about it
Saw her in a pop package ,with the kinks,Gerry and the pacemakers ,gene Pitney,Bobby shaftoe ,in Eccles at the Broadway cinema in the 70s she was very pritty ,I like the music she did later and today ,very intelligent and very interesting lady who's lived life to the full and got the T shirt.shes the kind of person who I would love to listen to ,over a cup of tea and a chocolate biscuit ,can't drink anymore as I'm a recovering alcoholic no drink for nearly twenty years ,and Def would have loved listening to her when I was drinking xx
Broken English best album EVER
I like her song As Tears Go By
One of her best songs 😀
Truth be known she was a beautiful Wild child & even tho Nick was a shit to her, she let drugs take over her life, what followed was her downfall and for her, her beauty was her curse!!
Love that woman she's been there and still alive and around to tel her stories💟💟💟💟😘😘😘💟👍✌👌
There was no mention of the song she co wrote with Mike Sister morphine ,which is a story of drugs etc
sister Morphine was written by Keith Richards & Marianne-the lyrics were unfortunately biographical for Marianne.
Just AMAZING.
Feel really bad for her son! I hope he has a good life!
I was in the same class at QK secondary school in St John's Wood, north London as her son Nicholas. That was 1976 to 1978. We were just 11 years old. I had no idea at first who his famous mother was! He was a very bright boy and living with his father artist John Dunbar at the time, Marianne's first husband. The boy was a loner at school. He has since become a husband and father and a very educated and succesful man.
I think she sang back up vocals in a Metallica song some time ago.
"The Memory Remains" , the da dada daaa da daaaa da part

She was such a glamour girl in the 60s so I had no idea that she had such a rough go.
Nothing surprised me of all of the crap this video contains.
It may all be true but why must we continue to listen and chronicle her mistakes? I feel it is very unfair. She is a brilliant artist and that has been proved by her recordings and song writing. Leave her past behind and present her as the artist she truly is. I am so sick of these grisly headlines which never explain the whole story.
I just love her. Always have. Always will.

When she join to Mick and left the husband and child, he came to here, a litlle town in São Paulo, Matão. I saw she and Anita Palenberg crossing the street with popsicle on their hands, for their both and Mick and Keith that were at a bazaar. Sorry to know that after she came back, her life became so bad.
Marriane has gone through hell and back.she became noticed at her age at 17 and known for the song by Mick Jagger As Tears Go By.its now 2024 at her age now 77 shes still alive after going through her addiction drugs for a few years .had cancer 3 times and got covid and is now still alive .Godbless you Marriane your one strong beautiful lady.Good Luck to You 👍🙋♀️🙏💖🦋🎸✌🕊🌹🌻🦋

Hello Mary-Ann here, I'm a 1965 baby, so happy to let you know my father named me, I'm sure after her, that's what I say.
Since the late ‘70’s, her music has much more interesting than Mick Jagger’s oldies act.

She has a beautiful voice, both before and also with broken English. She’s a wonderful woman, I really hope she is happy.
Thank you for your beautiful words for Marianne! ❣
Cursed by sensitivity, beauty, and talent.
Wasn't the song, "She's a Femme Fatale" written about her? Or was that Nico?
What a life!😞
To the narrator here: You are one of many who splash down a hundred facts or factoids like machine gun spray. Take a breath or a pause now and then. Nobody can absord all of that in a few minutes. Marianne is a special person who needs a little context injected between these facts. Because of your style I got little out of this but I knew much of her history anyway. I don't know if it's a generational thing or what but it is crazy! Excellent photos at least that streamed past while listening at least but please slow it down! I want to digest some of this.
Unrecognizable, she doesnt look like the same person as her gorgeous younger self, not even an older version of her younger self. Maybe part of the price of drug addiction.
WHAT AN AMAZING WOMAN!!! ❤
Not how I remember it in that order.
Wow, self-medicated herself, good that you should never give up.
Tough talented lady
True, she has grit and perseverance. May she live her life fully ❣

Her name is pronounced Marry Ann!
“Carrie Anne”
Broken English was my favorite in 1982.
She was such a hottie in her youth
I suppose reading from Wikipedia is a little more up to date & sghorter than reading her Autobiography, whic is as recent as my knowledge of M.F. Is.
I heard she was involved with the occult, as many were in the 70s, and I flirted with it as well in the mid 80s
One story I heard was that she was the center of attention at a "Black Mass". Maybe someone else has more details.
Did she ever re-connect with her son?
The stones introduced her to heroin.
Did she do a music video with a monkey grinder machine?
I have not heard of this singer, I suppose because she is British. Still a sad story with all her drug abuse and all. Glad to hear she got clean and drug-free. Thanks for doing this video. Good info. 😊

Gosh, she was big in the seventies!
Her problems were entirely self-inflicted. A silly, spoilt and irresponsible character who took up a lot of medical resources that could have been devoted to the genuinely ill.
These days I sit on corner stones

The genuinely I'll don't usually don't use heroin scored from the street. If she was silly spoilt and irresponsible, she paid the price, did it hard and made an amazing recovery. She has lived her life to the maxx and has enriched us all with some of the best music ever. Thanks Marianne. You're one beautiful lady
