Sal….I completely ignored grunge when it first came out ……, it was my sons’ generation’s music. I just thought it was angry with depressing lyrics. And I’m from Seattle! Then the pandemic hit and I had time and interest to explore metal, grunge and other genres and I was flabbergasted by how good the grunge bands were! Especially AIC and PJ. Amazing melodies, great vocals, deep lyrics and great musicians. I became a grunge fan at 73! 😏🤘
That's wonderful!! Thanks for sharing!! I'm so happy you gave Grunge another listen and fell in love. It's amazing and came straight from their souls. They kept it "real" and really raw!!👊🥰 Pearl Jam is still out there rocking as hard and real as ever!!🙃 Oh and btw, I'm in your son's generation (Gen X😉)... as good as I know the 70's were for your generation (it's my parents generation too) music-wise... the 90's and Grunge were just as impactful to us Gen X'ers!!🙃🤗 Peace and light...
Soundgarden.
@@artis1969 well, yes…..one of the “big four”, and Chris Cornell had a great voice. For some reason, their songs didn’t connect with me as much. Neither did Nirvana….which was too “punk” for me. But Audioslave? Yeah! RATM and Cornell? How could it miss? 😁
@@w.geoffreyspaulding6588 I'd bet most of us who were lucky enough to be immersed in that phenomenon all have different stories. I owned SG and AIC before the Teen Spirit Beatlemania. I liked them both, but it was Nirvana and PJ that brought it all together for me. It was amazing to learn of all these great bands coming out of one scene.
Now that it's mostly all over, I always come back to SG and AIC. I still like Nirvana and PJ, but the music hasn't endured quite as much to me as the other two.
Audioslave escaped me. I thought it would be a great collaboration, but it ended up being a bit too radio friendly for me. But I do think the coolest thing about grunge in general was 1) it was influenced by so many different types of music, and 2) all the bands on the periphery that got exposure they would not have normally gotten. We might not exactly call STP, Pumpkins, etc grunge, but the doors were blown off for bands like that to become really big. RHCP/Jane's Addiction came before, but were all under the umbrella of the alternative genre. REM, Live...there was no shortage of great music and different perspectives. It was a great time.
@@artis1969 well said.
Heya. David Abbruzzese here. I'm the drummer on this track.
The single that we released is different that the one from the Ten album. Stone was eventually happy with the version that we did with me on drums. 👊😁
I can’t even listen to the original version anymore😆 the energy on your version is just unbeatable!
You made good songs great. Should have redid the whole album 😂
Dave, thank you for your work. I'm a bass player who practiced to your drumming for many years.
Even with the band not being happy with the way it turned out Ten is one of the strongest first albums from any band
It is the strongest!
🙌
It really was how raw the album sounded that drew me to it. It was so different than the polished music that we got from the hair bands of that time.
@@nickface55 Raw? Its over produced to the max. Reverb on a snare drum?
Btw this is re recorded version with Dave Abbruzzes on drums.
Eddie Vedder's voice 👌🙌 one of the best... so iconic, can't mistake him for anyone else
I still can't fathom that back in those days he was just a kid that no one heard of
Love his voice.
Cornell is the only other voice I’ve ever confused with Eddie’s, Hunger Strike.
Don't forget Stone Gossard's riffs.
I feel so privileged to be able to say I crowd surfed at my first PJ concert-this tour, for the Ten album-when I was 17.
They worked really hard at their concerts. They genuinely felt that they owed their fans their best effort
No need for past tense, they're still out there doing it better than the rest imo. Just saw them in QC at the beginning of the month. They have shortened their set lists yet still played well over 2 hours. They just don't come any better than PJ and I'm speaking in the Present Tense, because it makes much more sense. ;) got to enjoy that one at QC and it was AMAZING.
Yes, you have SEVERLY underestimated them. They're one of the greatest bands of all time
My favorite thing about grunge is that it’s imperfect. It’s real. It’s not wrapped up with a little bow.
In my opinion Ten is one of the greatest albums ever made. Not a single bad song. Probably in my top 5 albums. And I didn’t listen to Pearl Jam when they first became popular as I was still into heavier stuff back then. Their other albums are great but nothing could touch the raw sound and emotion of this album.
Late 80s rock was big hair and Leopard print spandex. Grunge was rebelling against that scene with unwashed hair, flannel and jeans. Throw in the respective attitudes and angst and you have the grunge scene.
grunge came in at just the perfect time. the 90s were incredible. the whole seattle scene gave us some incredible shit. the soundtrack to 'Singles' is epic.
I love how you say "No..." when you see Eddie lining up for one of is famous stage dives. =) That was one of his things, yeeting himself in to the crowd with absolutely no care or concern.
He was a beast. Pretty sure he doesn't move quite like he used to anymore. But his voice is still amazing.
I've seen Pearl Jam live 4 times, they never disappoint. Check out Porch, Corduroy, Spin the Black Circle, Hail Hail, Save You, God's Dice.
I was going to say he’d love “Spin the Black Circle” & “Do the Evolution” for the energy they have!
That bass line in Save You is phenomenal. I love their heavy songs. Satan's Bed is awesome as well as Whipping and Go.
That's the beautiful thing about pearl jam.. their set list are never the same.. i understand why die hard fans started that 40 club.. where every member has atleast been to 40 different concerts.. incredible. There's a guy here on youtube that uploaded just the biggest hits.. and that video is 1h 20m long no commercial breaks.. just amazing stuff.
That bass line is Save You is phenomenal. That song is so sick.
I got to see them live once in Memphis and it was my 2nd favorite live show next to Tool. Eddie even sang some Elvis for us and that was a nice treat. They had Veruca Salt opening for them and they all came out for an encode after the show. I'll never forget how amazing it was
Eddie Vedder has an unmistakable and amazing voice! He and Pearl Jam are that era!
There part of that era. You have Nirvana and Soundgarden releasing albums first with as great or better success!
Eddie is a beast on stage. Look up some live performances of him climbing lighting rigs.
Always great to see someone discover just how great Pearl Jam is. The rabbit hole is deep on this one. Their sound has changed over 30 years, as they’ve obviously matured and evolved. But they still have a huge fan base, and still fill arenas around the world. If you’re looking for rockers, I’d start with the UNCENSORED “Jeremy” video, the official animated “Do The Evolution” video, and “Porch” and “State of Love and Trust” from MTV Unplugged. Subscribed.
Definitely if you listen to Jeremy do the uncensored music video, it's intense.
I was born in 1983. This music was what helped shape the person I am. Seattle will always hold a special place in the hearts of the 90s kid.
Agreed! I was born in ‘83, too, and 90’s grunge and alternative is still my favorite genre to this day!
Pearl Jam are icons. I was 20 in 92 and as a part of the grunge movement these guys helped change the world along with Nirvana, Sonic Youth, The Pixies, Soundgarden and Mudhoney. Gen Xers like them and me grew up through 80s hair metal that was entirely about excess and image and we weren't really feeling that. Grunge signalled a change into grittier dirtier musical choices and deeper, more personal and resonant lyrics delivered with the power and emotion of the overall performance. Also, makes amazing driving music too, so there's that 😆🤘
👏👏👏 VERY well said!!👊 I was 20 in '92 as well and I feel ya on the 80's hair metal. We had our fill of it and the Seattle Grunge music was a much-needed change. I'll even go as far as to say... it was life-changing in some ways. It was good to know that I wasn't alone in my thoughts and feelings about the horrible state and ways of the world. Just coming of age in that time period, entering the "adult" world and realizing the corruptness, selfishness, hate greed etc was absolutely horrifying and disheartening to me... listening to Grunge was very cathartic for my young soul back then (and it still is!!😉). It made me feel so much better. That's the power of music!!!🤗🥰
Oh and, YEP... it's kick-azz driving music!!!🙃 Great comment!! Peace and light...💞
I was in my mid 20s when grunge became popular and I gotta tell you-I was in love at first listen. Hair bands and all the excess just didn’t do it for me. When I first saw the video for Smells Like Teen Spirit, I felt like I was coming home and that I could relate to these bands, PJ being one of the best. I still listen to alt 90s and grunge almost all the time. I’m hoping the younger generation can get out of it what I do.❤
@@tinagilbert8902. Yep…once I became aware of the sound, look and attitude of grunge, I thought, “Finally!! THESE are my people!”
All of this. I miss this time. But I still have it in me. Always
speaking as a huge Led Zep, Rush, etc. fan, Eddie Vedder may just have the BEST pure rock voice. I'll leave it at that.
Yeah…adore Plant, but Eddie’s is unique…very rich and deeper than most rock singers. Have you ever watched him do the cover of Masters of War by Dylan? If not, look it up. It’s superb
Layne Staley.
There's so many, but you can't look past Paul Rodgers for that type of voice. For me anyway ☘
@@terrybarton1604 I like Rodgers and think his work with Bad Company was good. And he’s still going strong. But I never thought he had a particularly powerful voice though. For example, I didn’t think he was a very good match with Page in The Firm. Vedder has the deepness, richness WITH incredible power.
@@terrybarton1604 absolutely agree!!!
The unplugged concert is magic 🪄 💥in fact perfection 🧡
I concur!!😎👏
For all you Eddie Vedder lovers out there: check out the UA-cam video of his performing Dylan’s Masters of War. Holy Cow, what a powerful performance.
Which one? They've played it many times. I was fortunate enough to see them do it live at Wrigley Field about 5 years ago or so. McCready lost his mind and smashed his guitar. It was wonderful.
@@babylonkid The best version I've heard is the one from Benaroya Hall from 10/22/23. ua-cam.com/video/HYxpJv7CThc/v-deo.html&si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarE
the first time he did it at the Dylan 30th anniversary tribute concert is so powerful.
Evenflow never gets old. When I got the cd I had it on repeat for months,,lol
Just saw them in Nashville and St Louis..there is just nothing like live PJ. Mind blowing stuff.
Having lived through all this, it's great to see a new generation discover it for the first time. It was standard for these bands to rock, and also slow it down. Their entire catalog is diverse. They just don't do it like that any more.
The thing to remember is that this was young people music. So it for sure will be fun and energetic. The depth and soul is just what made it last.
Listen to the entirety of Ten, it's a masterpiece.
I think you would love the song "Go" and "Animal" from them.
Everyone reacts like that hearing Eddie's vocals. Pearl Jam is legendary.
You need to do Pearl Jam porch live at pink pop 92!!!! They’re great live, I’ve seen them 34 times
Welcome to the fan club of the greatest live band of all time. As well as the greatest songwriter of all time, Eddie Vedder. We are happy to have you.
Everyone complains about how Eddie sings and I like your comment on it…. unique raw and unpolished… and like it or not millions of people really dig it…like me…. One of the greatest bands of all time…pj
Good reaction! They're closing in on 90million records sold worldwide since inception. Rock and roll hall of famers. Still touring in their 50's and selling out stadiums. New album next year. Icons
I’m lucky to have seen Pearl Jam live twice ‘92 and ‘06 both were outstanding! 😎
I was 23 when this album came out and saw them twice on separate coasts. Amazing
I was 30 and saw them in Fla!
Pearl Jam is possibly the greatest live band of all time. Check out their live performances from about 1993 - 1999. They're incredible. They also might be the only band that sounds exactly the same live as they do on record. It's nuts how talented and gifted they are and they're such great song writers. Lastly, because they're such gifted musicians, they can play slow acoustic songs as well as heavy punk and hard rock songs. Their catalog is so diverse and wonderful.
Side note: In case no one has mentioned. Eddie wrote this song about a homeless person he befriended outside of their recording studio. Eddie would hang out and talk with him throughout the days.
PJ was my era… saw them live more than 20 times. Especially in the early 90’s. I also saw them when I was 7 months pregnant with my son 16 years ago.. they are one of my all time favorites.. and one of the only grunge” rocks lead singer from the old days that is still with us!! RIP.. Layne Staley, Chris Cornell, Scott Weiland, Kurt Cobain!!
Just saw them again last weekend and they sound just as awesome as they did then - and with a bigger, deeper potential setlist. They are SO good live.
There’ll only be one Eddie Vedder. And I’m super glad he’s still with us. Eddie is a bloody amazing vocalist and his voice has aged extremely well. Pearl Jam is one of my favourite bands of all time. Even their recent albums are quite good, not as good as Ten per se’, but good. Eddie’s solo work is also really good. Would love to see you check it out one day. 🤘👍😃
I suggest Pearl Jam Porch live at Pink Pop....An epic performance. They still put on an amazing show!
Yes, he needs to watch them live! Feel the energy! And, at that time, you never knew what to expect at a live show, Pearl Jam was no exception! He needs to experience a "mosh pit"! The vibes were off the chain, anything goes, just mind blowing!!!
yah I do too recommended PJ Porch Live at PInk POp
Seen PJ four times in Seattle but the greatest on-tape performance I've ever seen was the PINK POP thing they did in Europe. PORCH is the name of the song.
Eddie is a genius, loved this reaction. Saw them live in a totally minimal club in Stockholm in the 90s, I was literally 1m away and it was one of the best gigs I've ever seen. Hugs from Sweden.
Suggestion: Pearl Jam 1992 Pinkpop concert "Porch" Pearl Jam never disappoints. I love your reaction!! Thank you for sharing this awesome video! 😊💓🤘✌️
If you're just discovering them, you're in for a treat. They could do it all. Rock it out, to more subtle stuff.
Very well said.
"Not your typical garage band... We are at the top of our game, but extremely down to earth."
Great encapsulation of Pearl Jam.
Pearl Jam and Tool are my two favorite bands of this generation.
Great reaction. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I'm 60 years old and love Pearl Jam...Eddie has the best voice!
I was a bartender when these guys exploded, so I guess I took them for granted after they were placed in the jukebox & I heard them JAM all night, every night!😂 so I have to thank you, bc your reaction just reintroduced them to me in a sense! It's always amazeballs seeing you hear these gems for the first time, I just want to give you a hug or a high five when it's over hahaa ♥️✌
Ive been to hundreds of gigs in my 50 something years on this ball and by far the best was pearl jam in paris ...at the height of their fame ..will never be beaten
The early to mid 90s was like nothing else. I’m grateful to have been a teen during that time.
I’m just reminded of how fortunate I was to be a freshman in college in 1991, after having grown up on classic rock and soul music. I am privileged.
Bro this band is the greatest “LIVE” American Rock n Roll Band of All Time! They are still unbelievable however their Prime years were unmatched (live performances)
Yes, PJ! Cannot go wrong here, IMO. Sometime check out Adam Sandler doing his version of a cover of Even Flow on SNL as Operaman just cuz. Any PJ is welcomed anytime! Enjoyed this. (ETA: If you want something fast, check out "Rearview Mirror.")
If you have a chance to see them live, DO IT absolutely incredible
You should react to the “Pearl Jam 20” documentary
I was at that concert (Moore theater Seattle) and still the best concert I’ve ever been to. And yes, he did that and dropped into the crowd.
I wish the younger generation would all listen. There was a reason they are legends. I saw them twice in the early to mid nineties. Literally a religious experience. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
You have to check out State Of Love And Trust if you like their more up-tempo songs. It was on the soundtrack for the movie Singles, which was based in Seattle in 1990/1991 and Pearl Jam has a small part in it. As does Alice N Chains and Chris Cornell from Soundgarden. It's a great song. And a very cool movie.
My favorite Pearl Jam Song, rips from the very beginning.
@@SPGhettus Absolutely!
Rearview mirror as well is a corker
Saw them live a couple years ago when they did their Seattle concert, best concert I’ve ever been to.
Sal…..the lyrics in grunge are pretty meaningful….so a good idea to check them out just before, or perhaps just after listening to the song. The lyrics to this song is social commentary in poetic form.
Wow. Dude can really sweep the floor with that hair. Awesome tune.
Pearl Jam are one of the greatest live bands ever. Even to this day their concerts are very energetic and they have great live sound. I just saw them last fall (2022) and Eddie was still running around the stage jumping off speakers, although he's a little more cautious now.
"Release" live in Holland 1992 is the best live PJ song ever. Pinkpop '92 is also an iconic PJ performance.
Grunge really began before this with the U-Men, the Melvins, GreenRiver, Tad, Screaming Trees, Mudhoney, Mother Love Bone. tons of other great bands besides the top 4 of Nirvana, PJ, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains.
Even though I never understood a single word Eddie would sing, I still loved every note!
I grew up with the Beatles, and I love Grunge, and love Pearl Jam. Eddie Vedder is an amazing singer. Many years ago he did Love Reign O'er Me (The Who) in a tribute deal, and knocked it out of the ball park.
Bought this album back when i came out, blew us all away!!
Check out their song porch from pink pop 92 you will not regret it
Should of been at one of their concerts around this time - pure insanity !!
This was an epic rock album. 'Havin' fun' isn't usually an apt description for Eddie Vedder and his singing - the songs are generally deep with social commentary and dark emotion. But they were clearly in a groove in this performance - no question.
I was stationed in Japan when this album dropped. I was instantly hooked! Saw them live in 95 & 97. Glad you've delving into the catalog
Love this song! Good contrast to black unplugged you did earlier
For more grunge Soundgarden would be good. Not sure if you did them yet, maybe Outshined as a first song
Don’t forget Grunge is basically just rock and roll
If you like funk you should try some Vulfpek. Back pocket or 1612 are fun but you can’t go wrong
The hubby & I just saw them play on Sept. 15 in TX. They have such a huge fan base. We met people from all over the world; some who’ve seen them over 40 times!
They STILL sound amazing!!
Good old times, I was in High School when the album came out, TEN is one of the greatest albums.
If you want another upbeat Pearl Jam song, go with "Porch". It's got similar energy to this
Porch live throughout the 90s was an absolute pile of mayhem lol
Pearl Jam is literally the best band in modern times. Sure, some people don’t like them, but they are easily better than any band since the 60’s.
"Grunge" was born in Seattle in the early 90s. Both Pearl Jam, and Nivana are Seattle Bands, and came out at almost the same time Curt Cobain of Nirvana, and Eddie Vedder, even jammed with each other's bands. Jimi Hendrix was also Born and raised in Seattle. Must be something in the water.
Even Alice in chains is from Seattle which is insane considering how good AIC is
I moved to Seattle in '92 and the city was so alive with AMAZING music. For me, though, Pearl Jam was the most exciting band around back then, and that's saying something (so many incredible bands came out of that era). Ten is still one of my all-time favorite albums!
I was 10 when this album came it and i never looked back. It changed me forever
Very powerful voice live this one but I haven't heard a pearl Jam song I didn't like they dont like but I love it I don't know how much better they want it to be this is excellent you said right exquisitely unique
Dave Krusen is a great drummer. And even great drummers struggle at times. Dave Abbruzzese came along and perfected the formula that Krusen created.
Props top both legends of the game.
This is my favorite "official" music video of all time. Their catalog is incredible. Last few albums, not so much, but there are so many top-tier songs/albums from this band. I first saw them in a small venue in 1993 and numerous times all over the country since. They are excellent live. Lots of high energy material if that's what you're after. Happy exploring!
I was in my early 40's when Grunge hit the air! And I thanked the Lord for it!!!!!!!!
"Exquisitely Unique". I Love your description. Always so fun to see a first time reaction to those who do not know of the greatness called, "Pearl Jam". Perfection!! Welcome aboard!
I always felt grunge was made just for me 🖤
When fall hits, my heart needs grunge. I've lived in the PNW my entire life & the genre speaks to me at some baseline level. Don't apologize for your process either. Grunge was such a departure from the rock coming out of LA, it took a lot of folks a min ( some have still never connected with it) music is so personal and yet connects us in big ways.
This was a fun reaction. Well wishes from Oregon 🌲🌊
First saw this video when I was 12 in ‘92. It felt like it came from outer space; these guys were the coolest fucking dudes I’d ever seen and this was music I had been waiting for my entire (short) life.
Heard my daughter playing nirvana. I was hooked on grundge. I was huge rocker. Then i hooked her up with ska and punk 🤘❤️. Now im sending my granddaughter ska and college radio tunes to her email
Great reaction. I recommend the song Jeremy (Official video). Powerful and emotional.
Too many people call this a studio version, but if you listen to this version, then right after listen to the studio version on the album they are different
It takes courage to admit in public to a potencial 26k subscribers, that you haven't heard to Pearl Jam in their 30+ carreer
I don’t mind looking silly 😅 but yeah I’ve heard of them but never bothered to listen
“It’s part of my process…it’s important for me to understand what I’m listening to.” God Bless You Sir 🫡
The thing I always loved about Vedder as a lyricist is that I can see the pictures in my head. His writing is so eloquent and always made you think. It’s still absolutely relevant 33 years later. I’m not 14 anymore, but I still love their music.
I think the word you’re looking for is £ucking EPIC!
Crowd surfing and staging diving was how we do in Seattle back in the day - it was done at all the grunge shows- free for all - notice no security at the stage! Think Eddie climbing the wall to the balcony at this show.
2024 ❤️ Pearl Jam, thank you for the reaction! Bringing the band to a whole new audience.
The soundtrack to my life 💕
With Love in my Heart I have only one thing to say... PearlJam forever... :D
While all of the band is fabulous.. Eddie Vedder has always been 'it' for me.. just cant get enough.. Thanks for your reaction.. love it!
You should dive deep on Pearl Jam. Rearview Mirror, Tremor Christ, Animal….just a start. 💕🎶
Check out "State of Love and Trust" unplugged version. Also "Porch" from Pink Pop or the unplugged performance are great if you're looking for energy.
You need to listen to Rearview mirror, by Pearl Jam too. The story behind is also worth to know.
Goosebumps!!!
I just seen them in concert for the first time Sunday, they were amazing, however, i so wish I could have seen them during this era, would have been so much fun!
It was! 😉🤘
Exploring this and other late 80s and early 90s music will help explain Gen X. Loving your genuine reactions to the music I grew up with and molded me. 💜
Ah, brings me back to my heydey...what a time to be a fan of music the early 90s was... 💜 I was only a pre-teen, but had an older brother with good taste who would take me to shows, I was lucky
The video was recorded live. This version is different than the album recording. Dave Krusen played drums on the album and David Abbruzzese is on drums here.

Eddie Vedder has an absolute iconic voice! Chris Cornell and Vedder on Hunger Strike!
