If I recall correctly, Eddie Vedder explained that this song was written about a homeless man also named Eddie, a veteran who would post up in the doorway of their practice studio in Seattle. The band befriended the man eventually and when the band returned from a short club tour they noticed the man was not there. They then found out that he had passed away and it drove Eddie to write this song.

They are amazing live, and from watching recent videos of concerts they still are. But I'm glad I got to see them several times when they were young and angry. 😂

This brings back memories. I was in my early 20's when this song and this group broke out. It was an amazing time for music. The songs and singers were just so full of passion and you could feel it when they performed. Another group from this time was 'Stone Temple Pilots'. The lead singer Scott Weiland was fantastic. Their songs and music great.
No cell phones anywhere to be seen. A simpler time.

Eddie Vedder also wrote the sound track to the movie Into The Wild a true story by Sean Penn.
The lyrics to this song really helps understand the song more. Great reaction and you really got the meaning down to a tee.

I like this reaction channel because they research the music a bit before listening so they can have an appreciation for what the song is about to help them provide an informed reaction. A lot of reaction channels ask questions to the viewers about the songs they are reacting to while the are playing. I keep saying "Don't you you have an internet browser to quickly look up the answers to your questions?".

Great reaction! Saw them back in the day, funny story my friend I went with got too drunk during the warm up bands and said she had to go to the restroom and I waited at our seats because I didn't want to miss the beginning of the concert. Should have went with her, she never came back. I turns out she stepped outside for air and they wouldn't let her back in. So, I enjoyed the entire Pearl Jam part of the concert by myself and strangers around me. Still had a great time, and found her outside laying in a grassy area after the concert. I was so hoping I would find her she drove. Good thing she napped, cause by this time I was pretty buzzed too.

One of the funniest things I ever saw was at a bar in downtown Seattle about 1995, a band was playing and the singer did a stage dive and the crowd just parted and allowed him to land on the floor. Obviously they were no where near as good as Eddie Vedder and who was going to catch this guy?

Really nailed it with the “grunge” “classical” and “blues” comment. That would sum it up pretty appropriately for me. Tia catalogue is huge, as well as the endless availability of live versions of songs and the individual unique or rare circumstance that may have occurred with any of those songs being played. Got to you guys through Avenged reactions. Revisit them. Looking forward to the day PJ arrives again

I heard the comment about some homeless ppl put themselves there and I wonder what you meant, bc I feel like even when it seems to be “bad choices”, sometimes all ppl have is what feels like bad and worse choices. I know a lot of ppl think addicts who are homeless “put themselves there” but I’ve never met an addict who started out as a happy well adjusted, mentally stable person.
In fact a dr in the early 20th century treating addicts discovered if he dove down, delved deep enough he found trauma. But bc not every person who suffers trauma becomes an addict ppl think it’s a personal flaw. I think that’s where genetics come into the picture. Like borderline personality disorder. You’re born with the predisposition to have BPD but it’s only “triggered” when something happens as a young child. Anything from lack of parental attachment, abuse, to even having a severely mentally ill parent yourself.
I believe that in that same way, ppl have a predisposition towards addiction that is in their genetics. A person with a genetic predisposition towards addiction, but who has a good childhood with a strong parental support system and a lack of trauma, is less likely to become addicted to substances, food, sex, etc. But you add in trauma and that’s when addiction can grab hold.
Most drug users don’t become addicts, but there’s a reason those who do become that way.
Especially now with an insane housing market, exploding rent, lack of affordable healthcare, student loan debt and general income inequality, it’s easy to see why homelessness has exploded. Being homeless in itself is traumatizing. You’re constantly under threat, ppl treat you like trash and bc of the culture we live in you start to blame yourself. Many non users became users after becoming homeless bc an escape is so desperately needed. Homeless ppl suffer high rates of rpe and assault. So just a thought.

He was not the original drummer. Matt Cameron played drums on the demo's that got to Eddie and Dave Krusen was the drummer on Ten. Dave Abbruzzese was a great drummer but his personality clashed with Eddie and Jeff. Listen to "Glorified G". The first two lines are purportedly a direct quote from the drummer. Obviously, things were not working out.

That has absolutely nothing to do with why they named the band PJ.
Its about grit (the sound) making something special... as in a Pearl (as in sand irritating the oyster to produce a pearl)... Jeff came up with that... and Jam comes from when they witnessed Neil Young turning every song into a Jam session on stage with his band, which they liked.
The band also started a rumour for the media that Pearl was Eddies grandmother and she used to make a jam out of hallucinogens but that was just a story.
