Frappe was the top cold coffee before most people started drinking espresso, so then they had to think of a cold alternative and that's why we drink freddo espresso. It's bitter than frappe but very addictive. Also frappe is less healthy cuz its made of instant coffee, but it's cheap and you can make it at home and you don't need a coffee machine.

Cappuccino as merenda at 4-5 p.m. is tolerated. It's just that it's not supposed to be after a meal. So there's this short loophole time in later afternoon. Also in Veneto there's macchiatone which people do take after lunch and that's just shamelessly cheating on the no cappuccino rule because it's just so similar

It also has to do with the lack of refrigeration between the 50-80s in alot of Italian households. Milk would curdle starting after 11 as it would be delivered everyday in the morning. So after 11 you couldnt even make a proper cappuccino even if you wanted too. So you would do cheese instead and make an espresso

So is it like scrambled eggs or pancakes for lunch? Those are designated breakfast foods, it would be weird to eat them at lunch and while pancakes are okay for breakfast, they’d be considered unhealthy outside of breakfast?

It actually mostly having to do with lack of refrigeration in the past. They didnt get those until later than most Europeans countries and milk was delivered in the mornings. So starting around after 11 you couldnt even make a proper cappuccino even if you wanted to because milk would start to curdle. So if you had milk in the afternoon you would make fresh cheese instead
Thats how culturally speaking they became horrified at the idea of a cappuccino after 11
Also food culture and etiquette is really big in italy. And most people before didnt go to restaurants often. So you would have a family member cook for you. And if anyone ever found out you opted out from eating another prepared dish or dessert. Even not having seconds. But having a cappuccino instead. It would be considered offensive or like a slap in the face. That you wouldn’t have just one more pasta dish or cake. But you have a big filling drink instead. How rude are you! Aha is what they would think.

A lot of times this was impossible in Italy due to lack of refrigeration until the 80s. It was literally impossible
To make a cappuccino after 11 as the milk was delivered fresh in the morning and start to curdle in the afternoon. So it wasnt really an option until recently thats how all of this started…

I always have decaf green tea and eggs on toast for breakfast. Italian hubby and his family have cappuccino and some kind of pastry. I tried the Italian way and it didn’t work with my Irish physiology. The Italian way left me starving and wired with gas. Not good. Same with the Italian way of eating at 8pm at night. I can’t sleep if I eat that late.

@@slkonnaris8477 I think the climate definitely helps. I eat a lot of heavy food and I’m fine with it, but hubby tends to favour lighter foods. I also think that having coffee and pastry for breakfast stimulates the body which makes me wonder if it’s quite damaging long term for the adrenals and pancreas.

@@jacobmcmahan6227 It low-key does. Brazil has coffee trees so they make their own coffee. It's regional. So is italian food bc it was invented there. Many cheeses and other things that are used for italian cuisine grow in italy. It's also regional and thus their own.
And btw you didn't even read my last sentence bc I literally said that it sounds ridiculous to say what I said but so is the statement he said. At the bar it feels wrong to order it anytime after breakfast but at home I can make it whenever I want. Especially since I work evenings and nights so I usually sleep until late morning. Cappuccino is my only must have for breakfast, so if I wake up at noon I'm making myself one at noon even though I'm gonna have lunch less than half an hour later, no problem. You never drink it WHILE you're having lunch or dinner tho, like I've actually seen some tourists do, that's just gross. At least wait until the end of the meal
