Great idea! Our son (37) went back to school and is now a pilot. Becoming a pilot is VERY expensive and very time consuming. Anything they can do to get more competent pilots is needed.

I'm a POC from limited means and started taking lessons back when I was 15 years old by working in an orchard for money to fly. I'm 34 now, Commercial Pilot flying corporate aircraft, Certified Flight Instructor, Airframe & Powerplant Mechanic, and former US Army Aviator. Great program and idea, it's just my hope that they don't focus so much on gender and race that they forget about the qualities and skills that make a good Aviator. I wish the students well.

And have been on it every sense. Not, bad for man in his middle 40's. I will obtain my private pilot license. My personal aviation goal is to become a first officer for an regional airline. Getting a Private Pilot License is a stretch but doable for many people at only 40 hrs of flight. The issue with getting a transport license or ATP is the 1500 hrs of flight time across numerous special conditions. To qualify up for commercial jets, the PPLs need to stack up night flights, cross country flights, multi-engine aircraft, and flying in simulated/actual no vision conditions.
Those hours are expensive to build up and realistically require either a program like this or some other non-ATP flying job, like crop-dusting, aerial photography, or relocation services. Programs like this around the airlines are effectively paying the flight costs for the 1500 hrs of flight to then get a pilot for their fleet. In times of extreme labor shortage, like in Dec 2021, certain airlines were offering 2-3.5x overtime pay for pilots to take additional flights to cover the Christmas holidays.

You're putting your eggs in one basket by just hiring from te military. Be more diversified & have more of a variety to choose from. Invest more into the programs. Quit relying on the colleges, get trade & vocational programs going. Come on! Step out the comfort zone for once.

the point of the academy isn't to get pilots flying 787s and other wide-body aircraft immediately. in fact, it isn't at all. the seniority system of airlines means current and able to fly pilots will fill the spots of the pilots senior to them (for example, wide-body first officers will fill retiring wide-body capt's, narrow-body capt's will likely fill in wide-body f/o's, etc.). yes, this will mean there will be a gap in short-haul first officer roles; that's what the academy will provide. also in general the pipeline from having 0 flight hours to flying for airlines is typically a couple of years, not 10. I don't know about Aviate specifically but I'd imagine it's a similar time frame.
being a captain on a wide-body aircraft, however, does typically take around or just over a decade of experience. but that's okay because as long as this academy and other training programs continue United and other airlines will have a somewhat steady flow of fresh pilots to fill in the retiring gap.
