It's the same story in the trucking industry. Can't find drivers. Well it's no wonder you can't. Expect them to work 14 hour days, don't give them anywhere to park/use the bathroom, pay them as little as possible, blame them for anything that goes wrong, micromanage the hell out of them, treat them like expendable robots, only let "experienced" drivers drive and suddenly there's a crisis.
Did you know? In the build up to World War II, FDR signed a law that allowed 100,000 pilots to get their license at the expense of the United States government, because we knew we needed a lot of pilots. It is a trade that becomes a lifelong passion and although I do not fly currently I would love to get back in the seat. I'm a farmer and a work from home dad and my kids are too young for me to go off into the wild blue yonder. I had my pilot learner's permit before my driver learner's permit. It is something you will never get enough of, the feeling of lifting off through only your intention and your knowledge of physics. Modern computer avionics seems to make it much easier than when I learned on a Cessna 152. It's also a skill that generally makes you a more organized and thoughtful person.

You are better off getting a computer science degree or going to coding bootcamp and make $100k+ right off the bat. However, like what my flight instructor said, don't get into aviation for the money. only do it because you absolutely love it.

They should just train people for free, and in return students sign a contract that says they fly exclusively for said airline for certain amount of years… everybody wins.
But what happens if those people break the contract? I agree with what your saying but on a business stand point I can see why the airlines wouldn’t want to do that in the risk of losing tons of money to people skipping out on their contracts.
And then you have pilots like me -- former airline Captain with several thousand hours of Part 121 PIC experience -- who have no desire to go back to an industry where you start back on the bottom of the seniority list, sitting reserve as a First Officer, working crap hours, dealing with PITA passengers who are all (rightfully) pissed off at stupid mandates, and making sweet FA for pay.
