I’m a 70 year old Englishman (and I would like to think a gentleman). Having worn suit and tie for work for 40 plus years, I did find it interesting to forego these for a couple of years. But, now, I feel more comfortable with myself wearing suits, jackets and slacks, dress shirts, tie or ascot - all with clean, polished shoes. Plus, almost always, a trilby, fedora or flat cap (for the most casual circumstances) For me it’s not about what other people (apart from my wife) thinks; it’s about how I feel. Having said that, the only comments made to my face, or within my earshot, have been positive but who knows what has been thought or said quietly. And I don’t care. When I was growing up, dress codes were not flexible. Every man and boy had to obey certain “rules”. At my school, we had to wear short, blazer, tie and cap - it was said that uniform takes everyone, rich or poor, to the same level. True but it also restricted the development of style. I am thankful those days have gone and people can now dress as they wish. Of course. I wish people spent more time and effort to dress with care but that is just me. Let everyone be happy.
You and I are similar. Dressing well is important to me, but I also believe fashion is a form of self expression the more rules the less freedom to do such. However I’m torn because when there is complete lack or care in appearance or just little effort it becomes uninspiring. Thanks for watching and giving a fantastic comment.
A white button down collar, pinpoint oxford cloth dress shirt, top two buttons unbuttoned, with a soft silken ascot tied around my neck! Nicely Puffed! A brass buttoned , Navy blue blazer, with white dress trousers, and knee high Black patent leather Dress Boots, That is my new dress code that I wear very often since I have retired!
Very old fashioned English man, love it ! It frustrates me a bit that a channel such as yours, with outstanding production and content doesn't get the exposure it deserves. I get so much from it - Thanks man! #sortitoutyoutube !
That seems to be always the case…. I started to make some quality content but it just falls on death ears. I bet if there was some butts and tits it would have gotten much better traction though lol
I dig the cravat, looks good, also retains some heat in cooler weather, there's a lot of good stuff there. But I can't carry that off here in the rural borderland of England and Wales 🤣 Just not brave enough, man 🤣
Anyone who wears a cravat and it’s not a costume is a brave soul. If one day you venture out with one; just know you’re braver than all that surround you.
I've marched through both Monmouth and Cheppers with a cravat. Rather pleased to report that I wasn't murdered, and only mildly harassed. Not sure my luck would hold were I try that in Newport, however.
@@FashionableFather Much appreciated for your very kind reply! Men's fashion is in such desperate need of good mentors these days and you definitely fit the bill in spades! I've been a bit on the fence about procuring a few matching ascots and handkerchiefs and your video took the trepidation right out of it. Thank you, sir!
I live in the Netherlands were the culture is very informal (derived from Calvinism). I dress my best daily. To go to work, supermarket or stay at home. It does not matter. I do it for myself. People look at me and act surprised and scared. I get asked daily, without exaggerating. “Do you have a party to go to?” “Why are you so chic?” Those who do not know me look at me terrified.
@@jenxsj3902 I always think that Europe in general is better dressed than the States. Thank you for changing the perspective slightly. Also thank you for watching, enjoying and commenting.
My guy, that polo shirt is perfect... Seriously considering getting a cravat now! I really like the idea of making it more accessible and casual; there's no need to restrict it to formality. It looks like it was made for a polo match Always great watching your stuff man! Your enthusiasm and charm is magnetic and you have great camera presence
Isn't that polo nice? And Abercrombie!? Have you seen Marvelous Mrs. Maisel? Tony Shalhoub looks amazing in one in the 3rd season. You could totally rock one. Your compliments are truly tremendous. Thank You!! Made my day!
Do what makes you feel good. Like I said in the vid, this is actually less casual than a tie. So you you don’t have to wear it with a button up. But if you don’t like the look with a polo don’t do it. I think it looks fantastic
@@loloppololp9304 YES!! Handle it. Wear it with confidence. Also remember you will most likely get compliments and other comments as well. For those other comments be ready with witty retorts. Certainly happy I helped in a small way.
The silk of the ascot touches the skin... How do you clean it? Due to the frailty of the silk, you can't wash it with water. You can't have it dry cleaned either.
The one I have is cotton. But I’d still rock silk, make sure I’m clean, but also not worry if the silk gets a lil oil from my skin. Part of the character.
Very impressive... I feel so sad to witness that even our today's young military fraternity has forgotten - how to carry this gentlemanly wear. People tend to consider this more formal than a neck tie which is not true...
I just watched the film Emma from 2020 and I was like -why have I never seen a starched collar and a cravat like this? Have you ever seen that kind of cravat out in the wild?
I’ve been wearing ascots to work and out to try and bring it back as business casual like the modern necktie… I’m slowly inspiring my coworkers!
Love this!!!
Thanks for this! A polo shirt with a cravat looks GREAT on you!
I feel like you have the perfect amount of tongue-in-cheek. Keep up the good content!
Thank you! Awesome compliment!
Great video. I'm sold
Thank you! Awesome to know I inspired.
Really nice looking, like that it can be casual.

Flat caps are such a cool style.
I do this with my scarves all the time.
And so very debonair.
Can you wear it to business casual work environment?
Yes! But an ascot will grab some attention no matter where. Just be prepared for the attention; good and bad.

I saw a dude wearing one and I called it a "bandana" ... and then came here after watching a bunch of Troy Hawke videos.
Hope I helped.
Cary Grant is not "the quintessential ascot wearing beast." That title should go to David Niven.🙂
