This was very educational. My Father-in-law always wears an ascot. I bought him a pocket square and he managed to make ascot out of it lol. Great styling of the Ascot.
I wear ascot everyday and my favorite pairing is with jeans, white long sleeve shirt (rolled up sleeves for more casual) and sometimes a vest. This gives me the freedom to wear vivid color ascot with floral or unique patterns! If someone accuses me of not changing my clothes I point to the ascot and say "see different color today!" Really looking forward to trying the four in hand knot, never have done that. Thanks for the great video and showcasing some amazing ideas!
I've been rockin' the ascot for almost every formal function I've gone to for the past eight years, including my wedding. I've also worn them for an added dapper element for the Distinguished Gentlemen's Ride, an annual charity motorcycle ride. It's amazing how a simple, unexpected piece elevates an outfit, and generates so many compliments.
Just love your style, I'm wearing an ascot today even I'm a woman but I find an ascot very stylish. I love the looks of the navy jacket and the one with the sweater which is exactly unexpected but very cute! I'll try that. thank you for this great video!
Digging this. I might have to get one. My city dictates tee shirts, jeans and sportswear year round, so wearing anything slightly formal is unusual. I enjoy a classic aesthetic. The ascot serving as a less formal version of a neck tie seems extremely appropriate in my own mind, but ironically, I'm sure to experience more public stares if I wore one. No biggie though, it's not a bad thing if one is inclined toward style, and people take notice.
Thats why I'm here! One of my favorite movies, and Cary is my favorite actor. Im pulling off the car ride look today with the light grey pleated pants, grey coat, open buttoned white shirt and ascot!
Easy: ascot of your choice. Put it on first, then whatever crew-neck you're wearing on top. Final adjustments, presto!! Cary Grant actually created that look in 1929.
Wearing an ascot with a crew neck sweater has been my favorite style to wear casually for the past few years during the colder months. Taking cue from my wife I started wearing ascots and silk scarves (Hermes 65 cm size folds really well and you can get them in cashmere silk blends for more warmth) with crew necks. It also comes in pretty handy during the winter months in Southern California where it's warm under the sun and cold indoors (because they still blast the freakin' AC) or when the sun sets. An ascot takes less space than a scarf and I can easily have it stashed in my jacket and put it on whenever I need it. It really is a good way bring together an outfit. If my dad could pull it off...anyone can pull it off!
Thank you! I have been on a 20 year, completely unsuccessful, one man mission to revive the Ascot. But I don't care, I love them. I appreciate the 3 ways to tie an ascot, and agree that the once over will simply have you tugging it up all day, just slips away (silk after all... New Idea you brought to me was under the crewneck sweater almost mock turtle version. Kudos. Love the content. and BTW, was interested to see all these "ascots" were what I would call neck scarves as I do have many ascots that are designed for that exact purpose, wide and usually pointed at the ends, thin, sewn in folds in the middle like the front of an old cummerbund except that portion is around the back of the neck. I have a few of the long scarves like you show. Found the ascots in London and Paris mostly, not easy to find. Keep it up!
Thank you for making a video that simplifies different ways to tie an ascot. In particular, I appreciated the example which showed an ascot worn in a subdued manner resultant from choice of close-matching other garment pieces...this was an idea I had to "down-play " the look while still facilitating the elegance of the ascot. Well done !
Fred actually wears a neckerchief. His orange ascot Looks just like the orange neckerchief that I wore in Boy Scouts. Ascot or neckerchief, it is incredibly sexy. I wear one all the time. And sometimes I tie and wear one of my many Boy Scout neckerchiefs as an ascot like this man is wearing.
Davi Santos thanks, Davi. That’s the trick! Don’t approach it as a costumey accessory. Or maybe more to the point, don’t build a costume around it. Stay true to it’s original intent and it’ll look great.
The last outfit was genius! I can't help but feel the association with the stereotypical rich guy when seeing and ascot and often find it to look too stuffy, but that last outfit made it look natural and elegant.
In the process of looking for eye wear, after seeing those worn in the video, I've narrowed it down. Oh yeah, the lesson on ascot tying is great; they also protect the collars of your favorite shirts. God bless you for giving lesson on proper dress.
I found your video most helpful. I have worn a cravat all my life particularly during the colder weather. I now know how to tie it correctly. Than you.
I have seen many videos demonstrating ways of tying an Ascot. This one was better thanks to showing detailed outfits and looks. Thanks for this as I have started a Cravat/Ascot collection.
I love the ascot especially with a double breasted blazer or with a waistcoat. I have quite a few of them and do wear them a lot. They do have a feel of the past but that for me is a bonus not a negative. Good video and food for thought.
Great Video Brian, I personally love it when I have an opportunity to take out my ascot. It's just something completely different and especially younger people my age don't even know this accessory. Definitely a great conversation starter. Loved the outfits you put together 👍🏼
Just returned from Italy with my first ascot. So excited to wear it this weekend to a nice dinner. 😍 Thanks for this video. Great presentation and pacing.
Good video. The day ascot is definitely an underused element in menswear today. So much potential and utility in that little item. As to your outfits, good overall, a small critique is a o be aware of your button stance, there is a noticeable amount of shirt peeking out from beneath your jacket. A high rise pair of trousers or a lower button stance will solve the problem.
Meanwhile, here in feral Australia, I wear an ascot every day, and people constantly mock me, snicker behind my back, and look at me like I'm a revulsion.
Brian, great video. I think I've seen maybe 2 people wear an ascot IRL about 30 yrs ago. All looks were fantastic on you but definitely out of my comfort zone. I think your Drakes scarf or similar does the trick much better for me than the ascot. The one exception was the ascot and crew neck sweater which was not only my fav but also seemed the least fussy. Looking forward to trying that look.
pattgsm thanks so much for the comment. It’s definitely dependent on your own comfort zone. Maybe try it at home to see how you feel before venturing out into the world?
I love wearing neckerchiefs but I think the ascot would be a better option...totally going to grab one or two! Fantastic outfits, but 4 and 5 we're definitely some of my favorites. Amazing as always, Brian!
What a great, informative video. Straight to the point, easy to follow even though I've never worn an ascot before and you included some great demonstration of how to style an outfit. I really appreciate the explanation for why the matching or accent colours were chosen and what effect that has on the whole look. Thanks!
I consider the ascot to be a Link to surpase the casualness of any outft without drowning it to any real formality. In a sense its a way of adding some dressy flarishness. As usual, great content. This is terrific. Very helpful and your modeling of different styles is a big plus! You wear them all well and the color palette is right-on for your skin tone. Love the winged jacket collar. Class looks!
I never knew what this was called but always found it interesting. I just searched "puffy tie" and here I am. Lol. I feel like a cravat is really hit or miss.. But if you can pull it off, it looks amazing. Im definitely one for elegant fashion and this video sold me on the cravat. Great content!! I'm gonna order one..
Interesting video I stumbled upon. The ascot in the video is subtle "not to busy". Matches the jacket "menza-menz" and creates a nice contrast with the white shirt. Classic looking... Dark jacket, white shirt and dark ascot. Layers well and does not draw too much attention to any one piece. Tough to get blacks to match well though.🍸
This is very informative video. I think that Look 3 - Classic Prep is really inspired and effortlessly elegant. For me the actor, Edward Fox in the film, The Day of the Jackal (1973) gives the most definitive look for any men who want to wear a cravat. Large polka dots cravats (there are about 5 different cravats) that he wears in this film really suit him and it makes his look incredibly memorable.
Awesome video! Ascots definitely need to make more of a comeback and this video was helpful. Only piece of feedback I might give is the volume of the background music towards the middle of the video. Seemed a bit loud to me, but may also be different depending on what device youre using to watch the video.
Yes this is the look I've always wanted when looking wealthy and less formal. You don't see it that much today and that's why I love it. I also love the Victorian look as well with the high color shirts and double breasted top coats or vests with a broach or ascot tie under the shirt or on the shirt..
Also, is there anyway to really dress an ascot down? Like something casual but still sophisticated? I feel the one that was the most casual was with the crew neck.
dude - you are stylin’!!!! great vid - especially with the navy blue double-breasted jacket! think about some Bruno Magli’s on the bottom end - well done
Great Video Brian! I love wearing my ascot. I actually got the inspiration to wear it on New Years Eve under my crew neck sweater from the IG pic you posted a few months ago of the last outfit in the video. The only problem I have with ascots is finding good ones that don’t look tacky. Mine is from The Gentleman’s Gazette. Can you recommend other brands in addition to the ones mentioned in the video? Thanks!
Garrett, Dan Smith Company makes 100% cotton ascots. Lovely and great for all weather. Ranges $9 - $13 on Amazon. Good luck. They are the only ascots I'll buy. Try ladies' scarves, preferably 8" x 50" or thereabouts. I often wear one as an ascot, and they are perfect!
Still not really used to seeing an ascot but some brilliant looks Brian! Then again it took me a while to get used to pocket squares, as they were practically non-existent in Seoul last time I checked. Look #2 was my favourite, though I think #5 is probably the style I would first try out with. Kudos as always! - Han
I ditched ties and went 100% to ascots three years ago. Love them. Hard to find ascots that are not too short or too thick- making them hard to "knot".
My father had a great collection of ascots that he passed on to me. I enjoy wearing them from time-to-time. Comfortable and elegant. (BTW, it drove me crazy that your model’s white shirt wasn’t properly pressed. Casual doesn’t equal sloppy - as I have tried to educate my adult sons)
Love this video, I wear an ascot on occasion. I usually wear with straight pointed collar, is this okay? Or is a button down collared shirt preferable? Great idea to wear with crew neck sweater! Thanks for the info!
Being 22 it feels harder to wear an ascot even if it doesn't stand out in the outfit. Would you say this is a "when you get to that age" look? I've never been one to care what other think, but I still feel out of place with an ascot/cravat on. Amazing content as always! ~Mario, American in 🇯🇵
A true ascot connoisseur knows: -The ascot can be worn with nearly anything, if you choose the correct fabric (no need to buy an ascot; I make my own). -The ascot tucked into a crew-neck or sweater was a look perfected by Cary Grant in the Hitchcock film TO CATCH A THIEF, and is best achieved using a fine scarf instead of an ascot (ladies' scarves at around 8" x 50" are perfect). -The looks you put together are quite admirable, but other than the nod to Cary Grant, it wasn't the variety of looks I'd hoped to see. I was hoping you were going to explore the "makeshift turtleneck" which is the perfect term for what Grant achieved in THIEF. -You were missing a few pointers: pulling or ruffing up the finished knot; exploring fabrics with pros/cons; exploring solid colours which is de rigueur; oh well. -An ascot need not be costly (my best are $5 Dan Smith models in 100% cotton). This leads into the more varied uses of the ascot, including the ascot knot on a winter scarf.
I just wear a knotted short silk scarf, the flat knot, with paisleys or dots, underneath the shirt, with a navy blue double breasted jacket with brass buttons, going for the navy look.
Great video as always!! Let’s be serious, “The Millionaire” owned that ascot like a boss! 🤑
Oh, yeah! Totally right!
@Kaleb Roman Scammer, scammer, go away, Don't come back another day.
@@hespokestylewhy not a belt on any single outfit? 12:11

Completely agree, Michael. Thanks so much for chiming in. Would love to see some of those images!
I’m thinking about wearing one for my wedding too! Just what I wanted to read! As mentioned above, photos would be great!

I don't know of anyone who wears an ascot these days, but really appreciate the lesson. I'm tempted. Thank you.
Give it a try! Thanks for the comment, Joe.

I just bought my first ascot today. I absolutely love it. Can’t believe it took me so long to start wearing one. Thanks, Brian!!!
When I hear ascot, I think Fred from Scooby-Doo, but that's probably because I'm too young to have ever seen one anywhere else.
I didn't even think of Fred!
Me too! I’m too young haha
@@hespokestyle Can it actually be worn the way Fred does, though? I like how that looks, haha.

I remember watching Pacino rocking the ascot in The Godfather part II, fell in love with it ever since. Such an attractive look in dress for men.
Quite a late reply but.. That;s why I'm going for that style as I attend my prom tomorrow lol.

I really enjoyed this video. I thought that only Freddy from “Scooby-Doo” could pull off an ascot but you proved me wrong!
Phillip Reynolds awesome! You’re the second to mention Fred from Scooby Doo, who I admit I completely forgot about as an ascot-wearer!
I consider the ascot to be a Link to surpase the casualness of any outft without drowning it to any real formality. In a sense its a way of adding some dressy flarishness.
As usual, great content. Also, kuddos for the article on how you proposed to Mrs Sacawa on the site, you nailed it and it was great to get to know that intimate part of your life.

Being 22 it feels harder to wear an ascot even if it doesn't stand out in the outfit. Would you say this is a "when you get to that age" look? I've never been one to care what other think, but I still feel out of place with an ascot/cravat on. Amazing content as always!

You're right, it depends on the situation a bit when it comes to age. If you're uncomfortable, then it's not worth it.
A true ascot connoisseur knows:
-The ascot can be worn with nearly anything, if you choose the correct fabric (no need to buy an ascot; I make my own).
Would that include a toga? Quite a versatile accessory, indeed.
Pardon me ... would WHAT include a toga?
I’m just starting to wear ascots and Loveeee them!!!
One of my favorite historians, Robert Service, a celebrated Russian history expert is frequently seen wearing an ascot.

Amazing! Just practiced and learning
I'm confused. I always thought an ascot was a bed for a donkey.
Hahahahaha.
Hopefully your confusion can end, now that you know.
I just wear a knotted short silk scarf, the flat knot, with paisleys or dots, underneath the shirt, with a navy blue double breasted jacket with brass buttons, going for the navy look.
Very cool!
