I happend to in for a fitting yesterday as an SA on a 1870's picture. The young chap did an excellent knot and I asked what it was ,an Ascot he replied. I've not heard of it so searched and came across your most excellent vid. Many thanks.
I love your, "Great," when you drop the tie tac. Thanks for teaching how to do this and making it look easy for us normal guys who also drop our tie tacs.
This is like the only video on the entire internet that successfully describes how to tie a formal ascot. And not the kind of ascot worn by Mr. Howel on Gilligan’s Island (which is the way all the other UA-cam videos teach it). Kudos to you, Mr. Novotny. Keep up the good work!
Patrick ; could you describe the ascot as to width , length and material ? Never thought I'd go for something like this . . . now , I don't know . I like this .
that's standard day cravat size. look those up in google images and youtube you might like that. fred astaire, many celebrities wore them back in the day. it's the same material and size he used, but without the need for a tack, and the shirt is open as the luxurious silk wraps around your neck (and not just for decoration like the ascot).it keeps you warm (as silk a natural protein is the best all weather material: warm in winter and cool in summer)
+Koe Cars Great question. Since the Ascots and Cravats are not normally worn I feel there is freedom in the occasions that you choose to wear them. I was at an committee and directors appreciation dinner at an members only golf club and I could have easily worn a fancy necktie knot or a bow tie. I knew the past President and current President of our board wear bow ties so I wanted to make sure I was noticeably different and decided to wear the Barrel knot for the first time. I would wear it to any semi formal or black tie optional event. I would even wear it to go for a drive with top down :)
+DongleSlongBog Everyone that sees it loves it and comments on it. Of course I tell them to watch my videos :) did it and I tell them to go watch my videos :) It has become expected that I wear something extraordinary to any dinner functions or photo ops so I would be letting people down if I showed up in a suit with just a Windsor knot.
+Henrique Nascimento The Ascot is made of silk and it's not going to keep you warm, but if you are dressed up anyways then it makes for a great addition to your outfit.
Great look, nice knot. I can confirm an ascot is NOT a cravat. All forms of 'neck ties' including ascot, tie and bow tie originated from a Cravat during the evolution of men's neck ties. An Ascot is worn under the open neck collar, a cravat worn over a closed neck collar. Ascot is less formal, Cravat formal. Why do people use he wrong terminology, it inspires no confidence in those that do.
+Eric Steele Hi Eric. Yes I checked out the link. I could do the Mail Coach knot if I had a proper cravat. It looks like it goes twice around with a over hand knot on the lower part. If I had a stock I could do it. :) Thanks for sharing.
Patrick . O.k. - First of all , the inspiration: Guitarist Mason Williams on the Ed Sullivan show in1968 ( Classical Gas ) . His performance attire was retro . His ascot - is my focus . Can you identify it for me ? I've worn out my fingers trying to replicate it . No luck . Thanks much ! ( Over 40 years I've puzzled over this )
Could be way neater, I've seen them almost manufactured looking and pressed in appearance before, with a really tight flat sock like barrel knot in the centre. The Edwardians knew how to nail that one. Oh and don't wear a cravat at Ascot people, not done. It should be, but it's all polished top hat / ivory morning waistcoat frock coat & pale blue tie if you want to get it right. If you want to impress and really push the boat out go for a detachable starched stud fastening imperial raised collar from the Barker company.
+Sten43 Since 1977 Most definitely would go for full morning dress if I had it and that remains on my shopping list for the time being. Living on the west coast in Canada it's not stuffy and I wouldn't expect anyone to call me out for dressing a little different even if it isn't period correct. Nonetheless I do enjoy wearing it on dress up occasions.
What a really horrible watch! If you're going to wear a time piece that tacky, please at least adjust the size of the bracelet to your wrist. I'm sorry but this ruins the entire look. If you cannot be bothered, then don't wear a watch.

I think the fact that you left in the drop in the final edit is what makes me find this video so endearing. I keep on coming back
That’s a very smooth and elegant look. Gotta try this. Thanks
Can you use a casual ascot and tie it with this knot?
How delightfully regal of you to make such a video.
Thanks ;)
Your videos are very informative and useful. They have helped me to take my neckwear game to another level. Keep up the great work.
+J Don Thank you Sir for watching. I love doing videos for everyone and will continue to do so.
This is just a fabulous channel.Pure class.
That`s beautiful. I`m a tie guy but I really want to try to wear an ascot or cravat as I see how beautiful it is.
+Valentin Mr. I love wearing Ascots and thank you.
They're like $2.70 on Wish! Go get em!
I have been looking for this everywhere! Thank you!
Still at it! Thanks!
So helpful Sir and thanks 👍🏾
Terrific! Thank you for these tie tutorials.
+Chase Thomas You're welcome Sir and thank you for watching.
Very very nice!.....great video and so easy to fllow.
Just discovered your channel. Thank you !!
Is it important to drop the tie tack on the floor?
Yaddahay smarmalite only if you’re clumsy like me.
Is this a formal or casual ascot?
Great video very helpful
Hi Patrick I would like to purchase the ascot you're tying in the video. It's beautiful. I would like to know where can I buy it?
The “drop” was something very relatable
The question is, when can you wear it? How formal is it and what attire does it demand ?
I’m curious, can you suggest a few websites for purchasing formal ascot tie please

I'm trying to make these for my groomsmen. What is the width of the fabric that you are using?
How would I tie this using a tie pin?
What occasions suits best the Cravat Barrel Knot?

nice knot for the Ascot ... but I could not stop laughing for you little incident... "great" lol... again great video this one made my day...
+Cesar Marquez Thanks. Ya, I dropped it and thought oh sh!t and then I though good thing I wasnèt doing this above a sink :) Thanks for watching Sir.
Shouldn't the ascot be touching the skin and not worn like a regular tie? Or can we wear it however?
@@peterlee6391 when it’s worn on the skin it’s casual formal daywear.
@@PatrickNovotny I see. Thank you!
man this is super awsome i m trying to do like in my favorite tv show when i m acting it out cause i m acting like my character 1966 dark shadows
Gostei principalmente para usar a noite e no frio, mas acho que não encontro esses acessórios aqui no Brasil.

DAMN.... this shyt looks damn good
Thanks. That's how I roll. ;)

I tend to favor the cravat
So, in other words, the ascot is in contact with the flesh, while the cravat is in contact with fabric.
amazing!
+Edgar De La Cruz Thank you Sir. I hope you try it :)
U r' the best
You should do how to tie a "Mail Coach" knot!
/+Eric Steele Where would I find instructions on the Mail Coach? I would be happy to do it ASAP!
I'm not quite sure. I can check.
Here we are: www.kristenkoster.com/a-regency-primer-on-3-ways-to-tie-a-cravat/

+j baumun I think it's tied the same as a bow tie, but with a long silk scarf is my best guess.
Thanks very much for your reply . You are tops !
+j baumun Thanks.
not that i could ever accomplish this...but nice!
+Greg S Don't sell yourself short. I'm sure you can you do this knot.
I love it!
+thekid26000 I'm happy that you do.
Where can I buy a high-quality cravat please?
+Kolibri G I have bought some from cravat club .com. They have a huge variety and great quality.

Good for you though, not enough people know how to dress like a gentleman any more, needs to make a comeback in everyday wear.
+Sten43 Since 1977 It's the easiest and classiest way to stand out from everyone without even a spoken word.
good video as always. Lerner something new
+Randy King That's what I'm all about.
You had to really force it through the right material. I am sure that this damages the material and leaves puncture marks every time.
@@sueg2286 it’s fine.
@@PatrickNovotny Thankyou for replying.

+Luca Li awesome
Buy zen new shoes pls they are so messed up
Maybe he needs a watch.
so nobody rocks the mail coach anymore?
I haven't seen anyone do the mail coach. Maybe I'll make a video for it ;)
Patrick Novotny Please do I like the look personally.

Vincent Herbst thank you for you're comment 😉 as for the watch. Frankly, it fits just fine and that's how I like it.
waste of time cant even do it
Don't give up.
