Hi Richie, a great list as expected from the Punk Guru. One regret of mine was not seeing the Cramps or PIL live, but I saw most of the UK punk bands - The Damned were one of the best. I saw Talking Heads live twice, fantastic! Also The Banshees and The Cure together one night and Robert Smith played for both bands - Siouxsie smashed a guy in front of me on the head with the mic for spitting. The Stranglers were also superb live and still are great today. I saw The B52's when they first came to London - brilliant! I would put The Residents as punk as they pissed off a lot of people with their early stuff :) Their Commercial Album is genius. Ramones at number 1, yes. Never saw them live either :( Cheers, Paul
I regret never buying the Residents. I would have included them. When I saw The Damned the punk kids were complaining about the $10 tickets. I remember reading about Robert Smith playing with both bands on tour. How great is that.
Awesome as usual. Being from Canada I have some different ones like Teenage Head, The Battered Wives and the Diodes. They all recorded in the late 70's. There was actually a very cool punk scene in Canada in the late seventies and early 80's. Cheers
I became aware of Teenage Head from the VC. I looked Diodes because the name sounded familiar. I know their debut album. I don’t own it but I have heard it. Most surprising to me is that the Battered Wives was released by Bomp Records, the LA label.
I am in Philadelphia and I just got Wattie of The EXPLOITED to autograph 3 of my rarest record jackets. Tonight's show is in a church and should be good. I wish they would have came to Detroit. Philadelphia is a busy place.
I agree with you on The Who choice after Keith passed away. Scabies would have been a great replacement. After seeing them with Moon and then seeing them with the other guy in 1979. It was like night and day. I forget the guy's name right now. But he never really filled in the position. Their sound was suddenly hollowed. Excellent list Rich. Gen X. Superb record~ Rob/Boston
I love your list, you have quite an eclectic collection. I was a Stooge, MC5,Dolls pre punk junkie living in New York and eager to hear more similar sounds. The fan magazine N.Y. Rocker ran a photo of a new band with Johnny Thunders, Jerry Nolan and Richard Hell called the Heartbreakers, that was the start of punk for me (keep in mind it was the Heartbreakers going to London that started the punk scene there sadly also the herion drug use. I already was hip to The Dictators first LP (Killer punk Anthems). I went regularly to CBGB and Max's and saw many bands on your list. Thanks for mentioning Wire, Cramps, Pere Ubu, Mink DeVille, Contortions, DMZ ,Dead Boys and The Heartbreakers. I agree with most but some were too soft for my taste even though I had purchased most on your list I collected mostly 45's and EP's in 1976-77 and was happy to see The Saints EP on your list you could have included their first LP. Thanks for the memories and Rock On!
I didn’t have The Saints debut when I made this video. I picked up a great copy since. I saw Blondie in 76 at the Whiskey A Go-Go’s. That was my taste. I want the new reissue of the Heartbreakers album. Thanks for the great comment.
Whoever produced that Sex Pistols album did one helluva great job! To make that band into a masterpiece of an album that still stands up today is amazing! Love the song Bodies! “ Strapped on a table in a factory! An unintimate place to be Dying little baby in a lavatory Die little baby screaming !” Holy shit right?!? Again this is as you always say “Fantastic!”
Hey CV check out the movie D.O.A. when the Pistols toured America and you will hear. minus Sid of course, that the Pistols were nailing their album sound.

Great list! Nice expansive view of punk. I largely concur, and own about 95% of those in my collection. I'm a cd collector tho, so probably a total philistine to those in the vc. Never really cared much for Madness, but I'll give them another look. Wasn't aware of the Consumers or the Sods, have to check them out too. Was surprised you didn't list Gang Of Four's "Entertainment" or The Adverts "Crossing The Red Sea...", both are crucial IMO. Also, how about MX-80's "Hard Attack", Simply Saucer's "Cyborgs Revisited", The Outsiders' "Close Up", Graham Parker's "Howlin' Wind", or The Suicide Commandos' "Make A Record"? Or maybe ATV's "The Image Has Cracked" and The Pop Group's "Y"? Also I'd definitely include something by The Only Ones and The Fall as well. Wish they would reissue that Plugz album, it's really underrated.
If I had Gang Of Four they would have made the list easily. It has been awhile since listening to Crossing The Red Sea but I’ve always felt it is just okay. My two biggest 70’s wants are The Ruts and UK Subs.
@@vinylrichie007 Oh yeah, The Ruts are definitely essential too! Some of the most tensely explosive stuff from the UK scene, it's a shame their run was so tragically cut short. The Fall are the epitome of an acquired taste, and the size of their discog is really intimidating, but they are well worth the effort i think. Mark E. Smith had a highly singular vision and unique aesthetic. "Witch Trials" is a good place to start, or maybe the "Early Fall 77-79" comp of early singles.
Loads of classics here Richie in this feature length; Here Come the Warm Jets, Raincoats, Modern Dance, Suicide, 77, Are We Not Men (that's the European cover I have), Pink Flag and obviously Unknown Pleasures would be my highlights. Obviously rankings are down to preference. I think stuff like the Specials was indeed seen as part of punk in the UK in some way because ska/2-tone was also part of the youth culture of the time.
Nice going.....fun and sweet choices. That Akron Ohio put out some killer bands. Glad to see Patti / Lenny and Gary Numan up there. Stew was the punker with the Police, too bad they went south.
The Police blew up. I don't think their later albums are bad but I purged them. I wasn't going to ever feel the urge to play them. Patti Smith has to be included.
Hey Vinyl Richie. Thanks for the epic video. You showed a lot of great records. My favorites of the bunch Nerves, Joe Jackson, Specials, Madness, Police, Clash, B52s, Elvis Costello and of course the Ramones. By the way, I love that first Plimsouls EP too! Take care. / Matt
Crushed Baller , need to check it out. Dead Boys were in Cleveland and then Johnny Thunders convinced them to come to NY and introduced them to Heroin. The rest is history. Read a great book about NY Punk by Phil Marcade from The Senders. Johnny Thunders introduced him to Heroin also. Lot of rock n roll are on punk compilations so I call them punk. Nice list. I need The Adverts first album, not cheap Steve
The guy from The Normal started Mute Records in the UK, one of the best UK indie labels. They gave the label Blast First, releasing Sonic Youth, Big Black etc, in the UK. If you've not listened to the Buzzcocks "Spiral Scratch", then check it out, that's "punk"!
...viewer 666, scary ;-) top vid, 1st RAMONES as #1 - fantastic (and fully signed, with tommy, wow) i hate writing on cover's, but this one is a killer! your GI album looks brand new, but i think it's purchased when it came out, it's the issue with the lyric sheet or printed inner sleeve...
@@vinylrichie007 yeah - back in the days you hear your punk records to death before realize a plastic outer sleeve were necessary ;-) if you have the lyric sheet instead the printed inner (like me) the GI is really valuably...
Excellent, Richie. I remember that the Ramones early tour included San Francisco. They were only playing small little clubs. No one knew of them. They played a few shows at a small dive in North Beach which a friend of mine went to. Those shows were legendary and really helped spawn the SF punk scene. I was so pissed I missed that and only found out shortly after. Also, the Residents were a seminal band in SF that presaged the punk scene. They were, and still are, an enigma.
I kick myself for not picking up any Residents. Their covers were so cool. I was going to college at the time so I was on a budget. The Ramones in a small club on the early tours would have been amazing. I was able to see them at the Palladium and Perkins Palace early on. Not small clubs but pretty intimate.
Great list! But wait, you included Iggy and the stooges and you told me in your top 100 punk that was pre punk, and you included Joy Division and Ultravox which was post punk. LOL! Just busting you. Really good video and list. I loved your lil’ jab to Mazzy about Yoko regarding B52’s. I would have added The Jam, Undertones and The Rich Kids too. Curious, have you ever heard or listened to Fingerprintz. Their first album Distinguishing Marks is awesome, but I think that came out in 1980.
Can't really argue with any of that. I like that you threw in titles not necessarily "punk". But it's a state of mind for chrissake. I always considered it that way. It's about ethos, not style or outfit. I'd throw the Flamin Groovies in on that respect. I still need the first Damned, want a legitimate copy so I'll be patient. Same with The Germsn GI. Iconic records I need in my house. Take care Rich
V.R. YOUR THE REAL DEAL , YOU AND MAZZY... NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS WITH THE OTHER WANKERS. YOU TELL IT LIKE IT IS. SHORT AND SWEET... ROCK ON BROTHER MAN😎🎶🎵🎼✌👍
Great list VR. A lot of those records I have too.Loved the original NY CBGB’s bands ( Television, Patti, Ramones, Hell, etc) but struggled with the no wave stuff. I saw Contortions in Philly once , and luckily avoided James Chance wrath. They played a few songs, mayhem happened and that was it. My older bandmates and I took a train from Delaware to NY to see Sid Vicious at the 3rd night at Max’s Kansas City. As a teen and one of my first trips to NY I anxiously/enthusiastically overdid it pre-show pills and booze wise and puked at our table at the packed Max’s halfway through.Punk rock and I’m sure Sid approved but a rookie move on my part. His backup band was Arthur Kane, Jerry Nolan( Dolls -rhythm section) and Steve Dior( Thunders-like). They were great though I wish I remembered more. Spent the night sleeping it off at the train station as we missed the last train back. Young and dumb me for sure.
Nice list. What about the Dickies Incredible Shirnking I saw them once in 88 they must have played 25 songs in 45 minutes. Also you mentioned Johnny Moped I think Cycledelic came in the 79 but it could of been 80. Thanks for the video. I hope you sat down after that one.
Well, your definition of punk is pretty out there (Gary Numan? The Police?), but this is a really useful countdown! And now I need to get you a copy of Ha! Ha! Ha!
In the 70’s music wasn’t classified into all the genres that people now use. It was classic rock or the weird new music. When the Police first came out they were indeed in the Punk section.
I don't remember them ever being in the punk section, not in the UK anyway. Even the couple of punkier tracks on Od'A sound a lot more like The Cars than the Sex Pistols!
@@DadgeCity They were in the US. Any band from the UK with funny haircuts were put in the Punk section. That is until they added a New Wave section. Anyway my definition of Punk is very broad. Thanks for watching and leaving the comment. I’m currently doing the top ten albums by year starting with 1965.
I appreciate what the New York Dolls did/are, but they still haven't quite clicked with me yet. Eno, never had that issue - loved him the second I heard him, and the first two solo albums are the ones I play the most. Sketches - I need to look for that album. I hate Ska, but I do like Madness (and The Specials in small doses). Love The Cramps.
Great list full of bangers! Unfortunately I don't have that all on vinyl but I do on cd. Rhino released Marquee Moon and it should be still in print. To me Germs would be first and Ramones second but who cares. Pure Hell is fantastic. In fact I'm gonna listen it rn. Cheers, Petri

Black Flag were involved in a court case and weren't allowed to release and records for almost 3 years. The first press of that album didn't have the logo or the name of the band on the cover. Greg Ginn and I think another member were actually put in jail for releasing that album.

The Plugz did some great music for the Repo Man soundtrack. And did I miss something? I stayed to the very end. No "Modern Lovers"??? It's a great personal favorite. I consider it one of the best pieces of music ever made let alone best punk, which it truly is. It's got loud driving tempos, ultra-snotty vocals. Produced by John Cale. The Sex Pistols covered one of their songs. Sigh.

Never saw them live either :(
Cheers, Paul
I regret never buying the Residents. I would have included them. When I saw The Damned the punk kids were complaining about the $10 tickets. I remember reading about Robert Smith playing with both bands on tour. How great is that.

Like a sound critic.
Awesome as usual. Being from Canada I have some different ones like Teenage Head, The Battered Wives and the Diodes. They all recorded in the late 70's. There was actually a very cool punk scene in Canada in the late seventies and early 80's. Cheers
Are those bands from Toronto. I know Toronto had a good Punk scene. I think all my Canadian Punk is from the 80’s.
I became aware of Teenage Head from the VC. I looked Diodes because the name sounded familiar. I know their debut album. I don’t own it but I have heard it. Most surprising to me is that the Battered Wives was released by Bomp Records, the LA label.
Totally Chuck angus was my neighbour and his band L’etranger used to practice in his garage.
I am in Philadelphia and I just got Wattie of The EXPLOITED to autograph 3 of my rarest record jackets. Tonight's show is in a church and should be good. I wish they would have came to Detroit. Philadelphia is a busy place.

@@vinylrichie007 OK.
Gen X. Superb record~

Thanks for watching. Saw your music room video. Getting everything cleaned out and prepped takes a lot of time.
Bodies is brutal. The Sex Pistols album is so well produced.
Hey CV check out the movie D.O.A. when the Pistols toured America and you will hear. minus Sid of course, that the Pistols were nailing their album sound.
True. Chris Spedding is the name. And one hell of an artist himself.

The Fall is a band I never bought and now they have so many records. I need to dive in and check out Witch Trials.
This was way longer than I planned. This is my list today. I would hope everyone’s list would be a bit different.
@@vinylrichie007 I think it went just about the right length to talk about so many albums
Sods' album "Minutes to go" is such an incredible classic! Great brutal sound production and quality song writing and performance!

That's a big stack of records...cool response to Ryan's video.

your GI album looks brand new, but i think it's purchased when it came out, it's the issue with the lyric sheet or printed inner sleeve...
I bought that Germs album when it was released. The plastic outer sleeves are great for preventing ring wear. Viewer 666, yikes.
@@vinylrichie007 yeah - back in the days you hear your punk records to death before realize a plastic outer sleeve were necessary ;-)
if you have the lyric sheet instead the printed inner (like me) the GI is really valuably...
@@mikescott433 I have the printed insert.
Crime is another awesome SF band.
Did I include Iggy and the Stooges? Post Punk = Punk as far as I’m concerned. I never heard anyone in 79 or 80 say “lets go to the post punk show.”
Can't really argue with any of that. I like that you threw in titles not necessarily "punk". But it's a state of mind for chrissake. I always considered it that way.

I'm enjoying your videos!
I appreciate what the New York Dolls did/are, but they still haven't quite clicked with me yet.
