Crocheting too tight? 3 Tips on how to avoid it!

  • Crocheting too tight can be really frustrating. It also can lead to hand cramping and rage quitting. Here are the three tips I give to tight crocheters to help loosen things up!
I'm using size 5 bulky weight yarn and a K hook in this video. Let me know if you have other hurdles to crocheting comfortably. It shouldn't hurt unless you're dealing with something like carpal tunnel, arthritis, or another condition.

I'm so relieved to realize that I'm not the only one who made this mistake. I'm trying to do the magic circle, I made the base, but it's too tight to do the slip stitch.

Crochet is literally the only craft I wasn't immediately good at, so I gave up.
Recently picked it back up after a wrist injury, and struggle bussed my way through my FIRST completed project....it's not good. My stitches were so tight I was losing where to finish my row of double crochet.
    THANK YOU for this! 💜

I was so frustrated because I've been redoing the whole thing over and over again. The stitches kept getting tighter each time and it's always around the 7th to 12th stitch that it got almost impossible for the hook to pass through and I was so tempted to give up. I'm glad that your video appeared in the right time and finally I have more progress. Thank you so much this video has been really helpful!

I pull too tightly on the yarn with my left hand and too tightly on the work in my right hand. At first my stitches seem okay until I come back through to make another row then it seems like I’m tightening them even more as I work. It’s so frustrating and limits the types of work I can do.

You just saved my bunny ears hat project! I tried making this adorable hat (first project after a literal decade) and the beanie itself needed extra 19 rows to actually sit on my head & 3-4 extra rows along the edge of the hat so it covered my hears (it only needed 3 but I added a row of loose white double stitches for a cute trim) and I was ready to give up on the ears 'cuz they just kept being too tight

What about the right sized hook for the weight of woollen yarn you are using? Can a mismatch cause issues? Im doing a scarf which has an intricate pattern and I think I'm probably crocheting too tight but could it also help to go up a hook size? Also Ive heard with wool you need to steam and shape the scarf at the end of the project by pinning it out on a board which helps it relax once you have finished the job. Is that a thing?
