      Can't get tension right? I know, let's do double-crotchet* in a tiny circle with a what the bloody hell now stitch slip thingie eh wot?
      Mine wasn't very good. One side was there inches higher than the other, it looked like a trumpet. And fell off my finger 😠
      HOWEVER....can I have a drum roll please? Or vague attention at least. I'm needy. I discovered the perfect tension-thingy; those very stretchy ponytail bands. Not the thin ones, the ones that used to made of towelling but dunno what now (I'll find a link if anyone wants one) Controls the tension perfectly and is fully adjustable for different size wool. I just have to persuade the cat to give it back...
      *renamed cos it makes me crotchetty!

    • @Ciriun
      @Ciriun Рік тому +4

      I would really like to know more about where to get these ponytail bands and how you use them! My tension is so bad I can’t even manage a single chain! And it’s so frustrating because knitting doesn’t give me anywhere near this much trouble. Even finger loop braiding was easier than trying to crochet!

    • @randomhumanoidblob4506
      @randomhumanoidblob4506 Рік тому +8

      @Ciriun
      Here ya go. I'm fairly sure it's these, tho you can get different sizes. I'm afraid I bought mine so long ago I can't remember if they were mixed sizes, but I've used all the sizes I have and they all work, I just wrap the larger ones round my finger one more time.
      I can crochet now and no longer need them (finally made the bloody regulator too, but not in the round) but altho I have tried every type of ring, regulator etc, I still use them for finer yarns when my hand gets tired cos they're the most comfortable. If you have an old pair of leggings lying around I'd guess you could make a similar small loop with an offcut - anything stretchy and soft with no "grab" should work.
      One tip I do have for learning is use a thicker yarn - I'd never have mastered it with anything below worsted/aran weight, especially as the first couple of rows are always the hardest. At least if the tension is controlled it's another thing to not have to worry about.
      Hope this helps and best of luck 🤗

      @Ciriun
      Oops, forgot to say how to use...
      You just wrap it round your finger. They're small rings made of soft, stretchy fabric so you just stick it on your index finger and double up, exactly as you would when using elastic bands to keep something together. Run the yarn through it just as you would with any other ring and you're done. Because even the smallest one will loop round your finger at least twice, you can then either run the yarn underneath both loops or just one.
      It sounds horribly complicated but it's exactly the same as wrapping an elastic band round your finger, only softer and far more comfortable.

      I think that's awesome though and a great work-out for ones upper thighs. Holding your yarn tension with your knees is impressive if you ask me! I've been trying to find a way to do it with my toes because I have this terrible way of keeping my tension and I just can't seem to break the habit (31 years of holding tension the same way, so it's pretty ingrained...lol), which is terrible because the way I hold my tension is PAINFUL when working with things like crochet thread, DK/Sport. Worsted weight and above, it's no problem.

It is awkward for him to understand how to wrap the yarn and hold the tension as well as manipulating the hook to make a chain. WOW! I could see the advantage of him having only one task to concentrate on at a time thus eliminating his frustration. I love crocheting but have issues with my baby fingers and end up with what I refer to as ‘pinky fatigue’ and my pinky’s feel like they are going to lock up and I lose total strength and can’t control my tension at all. Using the tension regulator combined with using a straight-necked hook at first like Susan Bates', versus Boye, was indeed a game-changer and really got me from limping to going. I think I might be weening off of the regulator now for granny squares, but it remains to be seen if I might need it for extra-consistent, small gauge loom-knit-looking stitches for Amigurumi and such.

She washed it and said it came apart as I didn't weave it properly so she took the rest of it apart. So I go up a bit further and either put a tiny bit of clear PVA on it or candle wax.. But PVA works better, only a fab though on the ends.

    not gonna lie, for a while there i was considering dropping crochet despite only just getting into it because not being able to hold the yarn was really discouraging. so this ring has really been a game changer for me, and i'm so very excited to continue on my crochet journey!

    With ring finger being shorter, I made another one with 8 ch and hdc. Fits perfectly now.
    My issue with tension is too tight, and my hands gets tired from over stretching from holding the yarn.

    This is such a great tutorial! Unfortunately, as I am rather young (at least, still living under my parents' roof) I have access to pretty limited supplies since my parents do not want to buy me any extra yarn or hooks until I prove I'll stick with it. As it is, I only have a couple balls of yarn and two hooks, 6 and 6.5 mm from my grandmother. Is this still possible to make even though I have larger hooks? What adjustments do I need to make?

      Yes, I totally understand that. But if you can figure it out it will help so much! If it's turning out too loose, try using a smaller hook to see if that helps with your tension. You can make it as big or as small as you'd like, just make sure the starting chain wraps around your finger. I hope that helps!

    Thank you very much. This is genius and so helpful! When i was making this, I was struggling with my tension 😅 It would either be too tight or too loose, l usually crochet too tight. So I got frustrated but I managed it finish it with my pink yarn and it does its job perfectly even if it doesn't look like the one in the video (it has a bit of flared bottom because I made my tension too loose) Hopefully this is help me improve, it already feels so much better to crochet with this 😋 I will be making another one with this regulator and seeing if it turns out better.
    Good luck with your crocheting, everyone!

    funny thing, I tried a few chain stitches to create this regulator when i actually just got better at maintaining my tension! im a beginner so i'll practice for a few hours with 4mm then go to 5mm since 4 really helped me with getting the tension right.

      Not a dumb question 😉 But you will have to wait until you are either changing yarn color, or you can cut your yarn at the end of a row and reattach your yarn with the tension regulator. Hopefully that makes sense!

You show how to use crochet hook at the start of a project but how do we insert crochet hook in the tension regulator on a project which has been started? Unfortunately the video of basic crochet lesson has been deleted from UA-cam. Would appreciate your input.
