I found Trevor's Me, myself, and I when I was deadly ill for a month in the hospital. He showed me what was possible. I had bought Mythic a couple years before, but couldn't grasp it. Trevor ROCKS
So excited to watch this, I'm going to save it for my "Self care" Sunday Afternoon. Feet up, Cold drink and a probably a notepad for any wisdom I can "Magpie" into my toolkit.
Hi Kelsey, I'm glad you have found the wonderful world of solo play. Trevor is the best at it! For people who like group play, and who have never done solo, I thought I would explain why I love solo. To me, solo play is like reading a novel. Reading is a solo journey between me and the book. I don't need to schedule 4 to 6 people to be with me, to try to look over my shoulders and read the same book at the same time. Solo play provides that same one-on-one experience for me. Me, my dice, the oracles and a rule set go on a journey together. Happy soloing!
Absolutely loved this. As an old school gamer who kind of came back to the hobby later in life (i.e. kids grew up) solo play has been a true revelation. Excited to get my copy of Shadowdark and also for the next season of Me, Myself and Die. Watching these youtube channels has replaced TV for me. Keep up the great work.
Same here! It's been since like 1993 for me. When I came back, seeing people playing solo blew me away. Now I run solo delves all the time, and the results of those delves become lore for the campaign with my table game. Trevor is absolutely massive in showing the potential there.
I went all in on Shadowdark despite the lack of a solo mode....Great to see this session and Trevor is my favourite solo channel along with Ryan of the north Chaosyclypse and the Dungeon Dive. Many thanks for this Kelsey and Trevor.
Caught part of this live on my drive home, but finished it while making dinner. Both you (Kelsey) and Trevor are very suited to this GMs Corner dialogue. Well done. Thanks for sharing y’all’s thoughts to us mere mortals.
Hi! I'm the guy who met you at Gen Con and asked about solo adventures for Shadowdark... and then you said for me to make one lol 😂. This stream was very helpful especially when you explained campaigns and their issues. I suppose an adventure would be a micro event that happens in a macro world. Maybe at later levels the micro events could affect the macro world but at lower levels the macro probably wouldn't affect the adventure... Or so I think. I have been thinking about your challenge of making a solo adventure and wonder if it if is possible to do part choose your own adventure (I have this monster that everyone has to meet) but it isn't the only way for the whole thing to unfold. I have a setting and three problems for one lone monk who's stuck over the Summer session (he holidays over Winter). He can't leave but well some of students that have nowhere to go... Maybe 🤔... I mean they want to adventure... not too unethical... and hmmm well he is incharge... and well what could go wrong? and so it begins.
There are simplified versions of the Mythic GME ( Mythic Magazine issue 25) the Adventure crafter ( Mythic Magazine issue 29) and Location Crafter ( Mythic Magazine issue 31) easier and cheaper for people new to Mythic.
This is really a great conversation. Really good observations by Kelsey and good answers by Trevor. I feel like I'm sitting in the room with you both. :) Thank you.
Thanks to both of you. I enjoyed your conversation. Took me ages to get around to watching. And now, I want to find my Mythic PDF and create a character… but I'd better get to the kitchen and cook dinner for the family. Aagh! Curse you, real world! Nah, not really. But it is inspiring. Keep on spreading your boundless energy 😁
I loved reading the Dragonlance books as they came out, but yeah the game modules I feel in the end had a negative impact on the ttrpg genre. Definitely feel that leaving the player's character's fate in their own hands is the best method. As a GM I love designing things or taking some published module and making it my own or putting my own touches and changes to it. It actually has always saved me time to do this.I use the published adventure module as a inspiration and a spring board. For me coming up with absolutely fresh material is the burn out.
I love listening to MM&D while I work. I hope Season 4 works for your soon, but 5 Parsecs has kept be going. Trevor introduced me to oracles, which has made my GM experience so much better. I also can't wait for physical copies of Shadowdark. I've played 4 sessions so far and it's great!
Hi Kelsey and Trevor sad I can't stay. Real life again LOVE YOU BOTH. I appreciate your detail and depth of sharing gameplay aspects. Lots of love to you both. ❤️
Great interview! I really enjoyed the back-and-forth with Kelsey and Trevor. As a long-time user of Mythic GME, I thought the process analysis of Mythic GME was fantastic. I also really enjoyed hearing about both of their experiences with good and bad prewritten adventures. I only played the very beginning of Curse of Strahd before the GM couldn't continue due to changing work schedules. I also look forward to seeing Kelsey have a go at solo gaming, so I have subbed in preparation of that.
Mythic also has a set of cards that are fantastic and easy to use. A general knowledge of the Mythic system and the cards means not having to dig through the book to find the right chart etc. It is honestly one of the best purchases I have ever made. I am planning on doing a Shadowdark Solo game using the Mythic 2 with the deck. I am really looking forward to giving it a shot.
That was a great discussion. I seldom make it through a UA-cam video of this length, but stayed with it. Unfortunately, I was available during the actual livestream. Solo play is much more interesting and well supported today, but I would note that it goes back to the very dawn of RPGs. There was a solo dungeon crawl generation system included in Issue #1 of The Strategic Review (the precursor to The Dragon magazine) in “Spring, 1975”.
What a great conversation! I have just gotten Mythic GME2 to study it while vacationing so, yeah, this has come at a great time for me. It's such a great tool! Mythic (and soloing in general) should be a heavily recommended practice for every RPer, even if they're not naturally a soloist. Also, if you're a new GM, you don't have to wait for sessions with your players to train your improvisational skills, you can do it alone! The only way to become an expert at anything is to actually put a lot of hours into it in solitary. Moreover, soloing also allows you to prep while playing. You can make your world more alive (or literally make your world) by playing characters that your players will later find as NPCs, or even read about them in centuries-old legends. Ah... this hobby is just the best.
I will never forget the Battle of Hundatora episode. It's in that moment when you realize that this really could be it for everyone, especially the "WHY DID I SAY THAT?!" moment. Anyone who has seen the episode will remember, I'm sure. But that was the moment where I was 100% sure that this show was truly ruled by what the dice said and that if there was a TPK, that was the season.
Great video! I just purchased shadowdark and solodark and I'm just trying to figure out what setting you use shadowdark with? Do the Zines have campaigns for solo? Thanks for any help
This is such a fascinating conversation. I’m a hesitant gm because I’m overwhelmed by the infinite choices an RPG has. I have felt like oracles could give me more confidence in making decisions and choosing directions (metaphorically) in group games as well. I’m experimenting with the idea of converting Paul Bimler’s yes/no roll into a good/bad roll; so that when there’s a lull I can roll for myself to get inspiration about what could happen next. In this way I’m making the dice my idea person where I get to fill in the blanks, but am not sure if that too chaotic an idea. Edit: I forgot to preface that I’m also trying to culture a Bob Ross style (read fast, minimalistic and spontaneous) of gm-img where there is minimal prep and I could theoretically just set the first scene and build out from there on the fly.
I've got to say, for somebody basically from Hollywood, T Devall being perhaps 100% responsive to anything asked by anyone with questions about the game or just even banter, is a shocking example of actual down to earth HUMANITY. Similar, I guess, to what has been demonstrated and attributed to the Dionne herself. How the hells do I get to run his game system as a pro dm? 🤔
I tried the adventure Storm Kings Thunder and thought "the giants are having a civil war? That is awesome!". Then when I played through and was disappointed, I took the module, made it what I wanted and ran it for another group. Then it was awesome
I don’t think it’s about improvising, it’s more about making sense of the prompts given in relation to the current situation of the game. That is where you trust your instinct and goes with the first meaning you thought of.
Being continuously creative on demand is exhausting. You need breaks, even from doing what you love. I was playing/recording/producing music and posting a video of the results once a week, but it becomes monotonous, and you need a break to re-charge the batteries so you can come up with something new and different.
Seeing you guys together makes me so happy! ❤As a queer person in my fourties, this video really gives me hope, to invest more in roleplaying solo and with others again after a looong pause.
when i saw the opportunity to play by myself i was astonished ... imagine its hard to make time to you play with you , in a group periodically seems impossible . So that alternative makes me so happy , now im playing more and more each week .
“We just like rolling dice and looking in books.” Love it!
I found Trevor's Me, myself, and I when I was deadly ill for a month in the hospital. He showed me what was possible. I had bought Mythic a couple years before, but couldn't grasp it. Trevor ROCKS
@neonGliiitch Thank you very much!

I hope this is a foreshadowing of Trevor's next season using Shadowdark
Absolutely!
YES!!!
This would be so good. I looooved when he played ironsworn, a solo shadowdark would be amazing
Foreshadowdark!
and Mythic 2.0

Good recommendations for other solo channels! I will definitely be checking them out! :)
Have you checked out the new solo rules for shadowdark yet? 😊

Congrats on your Ennie! 🎉

Wow such a Good conversation, it’s awesome hearing about his history and Kelsey just let him cook with his responses
This was awesome. You both have such great personalities.
Would love to see more of these discussions!
Trevor didn't know Solo was a thing and is now the go to for how to solo!!
Excited to play your game Kelsey! Great video!

This was thoroughly enjoyable.

I need more of this ❤

Would love to see a director's commentary follow up to a solo session!
Sorry I missed the live stream. Great stream though.
I love Trevor watched some of his games bought 5 Parsecs from Home because of his playthrough

I wouldn't skip the tech trouble, absolute comedy gold that was.

Picked up the Mythic emulator, but haven't really dived into it, yet.
Trevor, we all know you, you're a God :)

Are you gonna make a barbarian as a class to shadowdark?
There's a barbarian in Into the Shadowlands supplement by House DM on drive-thru rpg... and there's a sea wolf class in Shadowdark cursed scroll #3.
To cool, two cool.
Cocaine is a hell of a drug. lol J/K
