Hey guys, thanks for running my adventure. I've watched you for years so imagine my excitement when I saw you were doing a live-play of Paper Chase. Great job! I especially loved the way you involved the player characters up front. Keep up the good work.

You wrote a truly memorable and timeless piece of storycraft. This is the first CoC scenario I ever played, coincidentally in 1991 when this AP is set, and it changed the way I looked at roleplaying games forever. Thank you again. -Keeper Chad

Jill has the choker!! It's not the 90s without that choker.
Edit: I'd REALLY love more CoC and MotW. They're very similar, but the tones are very different. I want to see more of both. I'd also love to see Monty play more!

My D&D group changed over to Call of Cthulhu in high school, ‘89-93, so this really struck a chord with me. So many great memories. Thanks for doing this!
Also, Jill may well be the most adorable person ever.

Honestly, this was much more watchable on UA-cam than the DnD. I've been the keeper before and if you write your own campaign I suggest creating many paths to your "end game". Also make sure to include several false paths that play on what your players would typically expect - like "the butler did it" or all the clues indicate its a vampire, werewolf, etc but is really something else. Suggested fun scenarios that I have played - 1) Players are 1920s gangsters hiding out from police in a haunted mansion, 2) Players are the Scooby Doo gang - and someone actually plays Scooby. We made it so he could not talk but had all the senses of a dog - it was hilarious.

Dungeon Dudes + Call of C'thulhu = possible Seth Skorkowsky cross-over? ❤ Pleeeeeeease.
I've always found odd how unsuited the CoC Rules are for playing the game; unless the Keeper treats investigative skill rolls as rolling to advance the plot without complications. So that it isn't "Do you succeed", but rather, "Do you succeed without a complication". Otherwise, the game can become a series of annoying dead ends.
A couple of extra giggleworthy moments from Kelly, "There is a missing MAN... uscript!" and "It's been a year... he's PROBABLY dead..."
I miss Joe; however, the small group did give Jill more of a chance to get a word in edgewise. 🤗

Awesome time! Thank you for the chills! In my head-cannon, the effects of the mythos knowledge meant that they were never sure that this world was the same as the one from before their trek through the tunnels.
After a string of bad financial decisions and a breakdown in close relationships, one of them decides that this world is not the right reality and returns to the tunnels trying to find the original world from whence they came. It does not go well.

So happy to see you trying Call of Cthulhu and liking it. There are sooo many flavors you could try with it, as mentioned, the more "pulpy" feel for heroes facing of the Mythos head on, or ALL the shades of horror themes you can do in classic CoC, at the end all depending on the narrative and mature level you prefer. One of the things that I like to mention to people starting in CoC is that CoC is also not only about a " weird mythos monster" related mystery it can also be completely mythos unrelated and the system will allow a lot to be explored.

You managed to bring something interesting to this scenario that I particularly enjoyed!! I love the chat at the end and how Kelly points out that the adventure is very Lovecraftian in the personal sense of dealing with a question... vs the battle with an eldritch horror. I think that lends a new level of appreciation to this scenario

I'm so glad you guys tried this game! I've run it many times. It lends itself well to one-shots and mini-series. I've even run some campaigns but when I do that I always warn players not to get too attached to their characters. They tend to deteriorate over time, especially since Cthulhu Mythos Knowledge lowers your maximum possible SAN.

In comparing the two systems, I'd point out to D&D players that in the base system you don't start a low-powered commoner and level up to nearly god status. You start out as a commoner and either die or go irretrievably mad. The character progression over a campaign is almost inverted, so while starting and ending a campaign with the same character is possible, always have a backup character or two. There is somewhat less so chance of character death in the Pulp Cthulhu variant where you get more HP and a larger budget for skills, but even so character death is always a real possibility. Do with that what you will.

  • @thornedkelp8321
    @thornedkelp8321 2 роки тому

Loved the adventure, and I would love to see more COC from all of you. What I find most interesting is that the players have a very reasonable to likely chance of dying, because in your other games in dnd that threat of death seems to be very very minimal. The threat of death at anytime I think keeps the story incredibly interesting. I believe Pulp Cthulhu takes a bit away from that, but the tradeoff is being able to have fun going toe to toe with the monsters of the mythos.

I think the switch from 1920s to 1990s is really good. 1920s was 50-60 years in the past when the game was written. There were a lot of living grandparents and their generation who had been adults in the 1920s. Players had living connections to the 1920s. But today the 20s are 100 years in the past and those born in 1900 are gone. The 1970s are as long ago to us today as the 1920s were when the game was written and the 1990s as long ago for us today as WWII was then. And IMHO this is the sweet spot for CoC,

This was very entertaining, especially since Paper Chase was my first and currently only foray into GMing CoC. It's interesting to see how Monty interpreted the same source material, while setting it in the 90s (I used 1920s America). Also of note was how short this ended up being (much more in line with what the module expects), compared to the one I ran with one player (my wife), where it took us ~6h spread over two sessions to finish the module (mostly due to extensive character interactions, but also more time spent investigating the house).
I, for one, would greatly favor a Dungeon Dudes CoC campaign.

There's a fantasy novel I'm reading (okay, light novel) called Grimgar: of Fantasy and Ash (the single season show is Grimgar: of Ashes and Illusions) where, yes, there's magic. You have casters, paladins, Rangers, rogues, warriors, priests, and what not. But a single arrow or bolt can still kill you. A sword, if not blocked by chain/plate mail, or swatted away with a blade, will easily kill.
Do you think that kind of fantasy world would translate to this game style well? Or is there perhaps a different system that would work well?

I feel like in dnd the DM's job is to present obstacles to be overcome, and consequences to make decision making matter. On the other hand, in CoC the GM's job is to present obstacles to slow down and misdirect the players so the story amd system can impose consequences.
This was great fun, I'd love you guys to play it more.

Another thing to keep in mind is failure doesn't have to be a binary You Did It or You Didn't. If the clue in the library is essential, then a failed Library Skill roll may mean you find the clue but you lost an entire day on it.

very cool guys - I really really hope you guys play again. I like D&D a lot, but CoC was the first RPG I played and I'm a big fan of Lovecraft as well and so it has a special place for me. Would love to see you guys play again if you get the chance and are inclined. Great job.
oh heck yeah, I was on the edge of my seat too.
They do have an official version of CoC that is for present day - so you might could check that out. That could be cool to do an x-files type CoC campaign, that's a really good idea.
For a future game I think it would be cool for you to stick with those characters - and have it that maybe this adventure got into their heads and they came back together out of a growing obsession to learn more. Not necessarily even about this specifically, but maybe Melanie used the inter-library loan to order some mythos-y books and shared some of the info with Norman. And then they could learn there's more mysterious stuff in their local area to gradually investigate? You can use their scenarios - and there are tons of fan made mysteries as well online - or its also not as hard as it may seem to make up your scenarios too. In terms of thinking it would be hard to make your own, remember that you're just getting used to this system too, and you've made a ton of D&D homebrew stuff. I think you'd absolutely be capable of doing it on your own. If you want a slightly different, and perhaps even a bit more D&D like, if you do get the core rule book, it should come with an intro adventure that skews a little more toward that type of story, while still retaining this side of it as well. So, you might want to look into that, because it might give you some additional ideas about how CoC adventures can run as well. I think its the same mission in the latest version - they used it for years and years with new additions, just updating it slightly. Its about a haunted house type scenario (just as a frame of reference to compare, in case they did happen to change it out for a different scenario, but I know I have the original CoC core book and then I think I have the 6th ed perhaps and I'm pretty sure it was still the same adventure as of then.

I personally like your play style, any of them. Watching or listening to you play is always entertaining (I have yet to find another D&D or other stream that I like as much). So anything you'll play is more than fine with me. 👍
I've been struggling with a "mystery" campaign myself in the World of Darkness. So I'll be looking forward to your insights on the writing process, Monty.

    Spoilers/Opinion of Call of Cthulu
So what did the players figure out? I'm not really sure to be honest, the person they knew who seemed to disappear from the face of the earth... had disappeared from the face of the earth, they found out he had been invited by something to go somewhere and then left of his own accord... I must admit I was expecting something along the lines of "Those Girls and/or Douglas who went missing were actually *Cthulhu Mythos Stuff*, by Douglas, Those Girls and/or another being." but I guess "Douglas left to the twilight zone, but came back to get some reading material" is another way to go but maybe it is a bit benign (Odd but seemingly 0 danger, I actually think Norman bringing a Gun along was the most dangerous thing that happened to Melanie) and the players involvement was a bit pointless (I guess they know that odd things are out there, but nothing changed, they observed). I don't think it was bad, but It did put me off trying Call of Cthulhu if I was given a choice between Call of Cthulhu or more D&D.
I do think that this is more of a me not getting the game instead of the game being bad though.

This was awesome! Just a tiny piece of feedback: Monty’s microphone could use some equalizing: when he starts to speak, the initial sound is louder than the following. It’s hard when I’m wearing headphones

would LOVE more CoC! I keep bugging my friends to play some and it’s always a treat to see the TTRPG people I follow play some CoC. considering what we’ve already seen with Drakkenneim, I fully believe that Monty can make something that will knock it out of the park 😊

I've been watching a ton of CoC lately as a change of pace from D&D and I love it. I think it would be absolutely amazing if you guys could give this a try under one of the extremely experienced keepers like Becca Scott from Caylx or London Carlisle from Spot Hidden to get a real feel for it

I dont watch a lot of RPG play, but this was excellent! I think CoC works really well for this format because it's A. Smaller parties and B. Smaller chunks of content. I love playing DnD for six hours straight, but watching it is not nearly as fun for me.
