I've been wanting to hear an aeolian harp ever since I first heard of them when I was a kid (ok, so I'm pretty nerdy - but I'm not the only one). Thank you Stanley Hershonik, for this and your 5-minute box aeolian harp. It looks like even I might be able to make one myself. Woot. Now my question is whether there are ways of getting different chords?
I'm probably wrong but those look like different sizes of fishing line. amazon sells flourocarbon ukulele strings and i know a friend who uses them all the time
No, it's different choices of notes (equivalent to making a type of minor scale) but was developed for composing with other things called modes (not all of which are major/minor); and anyway, when all strings are played together by the wind, it will sound weird as well. For instance, play all the open strings on a guitar and they're "out of tune" but no, they're just overlapping and not meant to be played that way.
I appreciate the design and all, and I love the idea of using wind to create a constant sound, but the noise it emits would drive me mad after a while! High pitched frequencies and my ears do not like each other!
might impact the sound making it more silent since the air blowing against it is moving the strings creating the vibrations. I'd say the holes at the bottom is MAYBE just to let a little air though so it doesn't get blown down.
Actually that instrument isn't a Theremin. It's something like a sealed metal bowl filled with water and metal rods of different pitched sticking out the top. It's played with a violin bow. Forgot what it's called though.
Who needs a guard dog when you can just play this at night 🤣
Great sound on both instruments.
I'm amazed that a gourd is able to withstand the tension of so many strings.
My neighbors would hate these, and in that case, I shall build one for each corner of the house..lol
I'm here for just that purpose..

Awesome, awesome Awesome!
the concept of the first one is absolutely incredible. Is there a manual for building this harp around?
i LOVE how the gourd one looks and soundss!!!

That's the sound I feel when I have the feeling of impending doom looming up.
It seems to have a spooky supernatural sound to it.
I'm beaming up now!
Good job
very beautiful sound.I need to build this.
It reminds me of Pink Floyd's A Saucerful of Secrets or early Tangerine Dream
A genius
Do you teach "how to" make these things? I would love to be able to make this:) Thanks:)
incredible.
really a suspense building instrument.
and finally one i can play. :D
by doing nothing!
I bet no one trick or treats at this house during Halloween.
I use South Bend fishing line. For the larger harps 50 or 60 lb test. Smaller harps take 15 to 20 lb test.
Billy Meier used these for the sound effects of the model craft
Good idea.
Cool, so this would be a true aeolian zither. Actually sounds more interesting and melodious than an aeolian harp.
Neat comment, Erin!!
Take this as a lesson in Resonant Frequency due to Wind :D

Very cool. How were these instruments recorded?
Hank Tilbury With a camera?
Andrew McKelvy I'm talking about the audio, i.e.: condenser mics, piezoelectric contact mics, PZMs, etc.
which tones do you have? what is the tension? what kind of strings do you use?

!!!LOVE!!!
I want to build on and just put it some random place in a forest for ominous vibes
Do you think adding more holes in the pipe would change the sound? Or are the holes more for visual appeal?

3:20 sound from hell xD
It's pretty awesome, but I think it needs to be tuned with a good electronic tuner.
So that's what's going on in the background of horror movies.
Nah...That's usually a Theremin.

spooky
Drone!
Need to do one all strings sympathetically tuned and preferably at a 432hz or even a BINAURAL healling vibration!!
It would be nice if they sounded like a nice chord or something. Unfortunately that could be the other end from alienoid erieness.
so this is responsible for those cheesy old space movies background noises
I suggest you to observe many videos or in real. Once you understand the principal, make your own version with whatever is at hand☺‼
Sounds like mongolian throat singing from space
I agree with you. It is too much out of tune, which makes it not marketable.
That sounds scary...
SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Now we know where those crappy overused horror movie effects come from.
Creepy
I was expecting something more pleasant. :/ this gave me a headache
You're just jealous b/c it's better than you
Horrible!
