In April 2021, the European Super League was announced, sparking outrage among players, coaches and pundits and protests from fans, falling flat on its face within 72 hours after nine of its twelve founding clubs withdrew from the project. But just seven months later, at the general assembly of the Confederation of African Football, also known as CAF, all 54 member associations voted to give the organisation’s executive committee permission to move forward with plans for a very similar competition.
But who is behind it? How would it work? And could it actually be a good idea? Or is it doomed to fail like its European cousin?
On today’s EFD Explained, we’re going to find out.

As a South African I’m the most happy about every country getting a big stadium. South Africa was fortunate to get them from the World Cup and I hope CAF can expand it
I feel this, only issue is can they fill these stadiums. We haven't done it in SA since the world cup. Not even the Soweto Derby can do it.

Here's an African perspective (by the way this is a very good video).
The main difference I see with the two Super Leagues is that Europe's version was all to make more money while the African version is to invest into developing the content in a footballing perspective. The reality is that when we watch European football there is a big difference in quality of everything because in Africa we do have some good clubs but generally the quality isn't the same, hence why we love football but don't watch many local games because all of Africa's best players are all playing in Europe.
I'd support the Super League in Africa on condition that it benefits all teams and other smaller teams will be able to participate and get a slice of the pie, but due to greediness I don't think that will happen
The problem is that any superleague will only help the top teams and hinder the smaller teams...

imagine an SA club (in the winter) having to play a local match, then flying to central Africa for a super league match in Congo in the insane heat and rain, then fly back to SA for a derby man
when it happens in europe via the ucl, nobody complains. let africa go through with this plan it could really develop football in the continent. rn all the best african players play abroad

with most of the best sides in Northern and Southern Africa, distances like that are much more frequent for Matchdays.
I'm for African football to develop, but the Super league AND domestic football is impossible. South African clubs can play as many as 3 domestic competitions a season btw

Am from an African country called Namibia and we have talented players here but none of them have any exposure but if CAF could improve the exposure for us , allowing us to actually have a chance at having a career in football would be best thing.

I feel like the African super league should (if it ever goes through) copy the mls system as it would minimise Jetlag for players and staff as well as granting more teams entry. This would maybe even work with Africa divided into three regions

@@dirtykurty1774 MLS has a better structure than Europe. MLS's structure gives more teams a chance, unlike Europe where the system keeps the rich rich and the poor poor forever.
That might actually work, or like the NFL have two conferences split into 4 regions north east south west. Though at the end of the day some traditions should not be touched imo.

Europeans often neglect how tough having relegation is when the sport and its fans are in infancy.
It works so well in Europe because there is a deep history of clubs as well as a large and successful 2nd (and more) leagues.
The issue is outside of Europe, these fan bases do not exist. There isnt depth. To build fan bases, sell tickets to games and actually have anyone care you cant just throw teams in and out.
Relegation is a goal. But you cannot just start big tournaments in underdeveloped areas with relegation. It will fail.

Wow! I had no idea that the African Super League was even a thing. I. Kenyan and I appreciate the analysis. I will now have my eyes open and see how the idea develops. While you have ably brought out the likely downfalls, greed and all, I think the risk is worth it, because local sport is very poorly funded, clubs struggle to stay above water and it is almost taboo to support local clubs compared to the Premier League or other top five leagues. We don't have that many stadiums to speak of. So the extra money would definitely be useful. Then again, there will be the added danger of increased corruption with the new revenue streams. But on the whole, the continent needs the extra exposure and funding, if only for the sport to grow and unearth the next Wanyamas, Salahs and Koulibalys.

Good video, I'd suggest that we should start with regional super leagues (SADC, ECOWAS, East Africa and Northern Africa) then play offs then have the top 2 from all regions compete

good idea. this would work. the play offs should be played over a very short period of time and in one country each time. teams having to travel from county to country on regular basis could be very costly.

I like in the comments the idea of splitting up into conferences that makes a lot of sense. But my biggest concern still would be the political instability across the continent and the potential for corruption similar to Italy in the early-00s. There's no question though that the talent pool is available on the continent

Africa and Asia are huge continents in comparison to Europe, so I'd say it's better to organise their champions League competitions in regional basis and only those who qualify for the final stages of the competition have to make those extensive journeys from north to south or east to west. Would be the best solution possible, would keep it real sportive and available for everyone.

I'm interested to see how the African Super League can work, but if there's a continent that absolutely needs a Super League, it's Oceania. The OFC and its 11 (Soon 12 when Bougainville eventually joins) members need all the money they can get to develop the game and make those 1-2 spots at the World Cup absolutely worth it.
The most popular sport in Oceania is rugby and kriket there is not care about football 🙃

I’m so glad actually for this but I think there should be even more team just like USA imagin having north conference and south conference so they don’t have to fly all season around but they can have like play offs so it’s more interesting and easier if 20/20 teams and 5 each reach the play offs and meet each other only for finals

As a Zamalek fan from Egypt I’m all for this. The European clubs have so much more money than our clubs that players are leaving Africa as kids to go to play in countries like Switzerland and Belgium. African clubs and our fans deserve better than this, and I don’t want to see our African game die for the feeding of Europe. The European super cup was all money the African super league is still all about money but it would hopefully reignite African football, and invest in our game rather than all of our game be in service of Europe even our fans rooting for European clubs.

I do not agree with you because if African players go to play in Europe it is because in Africa they do not invest in football and it is not a sport watched as in Europe, so the players to be able to earn more money and improve (in fact we have better sports centers) go to Europe. It is not that we steal them from you, rather we do you a favor by growing your players who will one day play for the national team. Contrary to what you say I think that it no longer makes sense to have an African Cup every two years because football is growing in Africa and competing during the European national championships is a great lack of respect for all the European teams that invest in African footballers.
But as usual, instead of taking your responsibility, you blame Europe.
Well said, like the idea of a split region so more clubs are Involved. And money goes to more areas for improvement. At least that's would be the dream.
Something I would like to add to the idea of "regional super leagues" is that they be of 12 to 16 teams. And hopefully some sort of replacement of teams that isn't relegation.

It will only benefit the 20 clubs involved…all players in domestic leagues will only want to play for the 20 teams, not to mention European teams now only have to scout 20 teams to pull talent out of Africa, I don’t see this benefitting Africa tbh
what if the African Super League was split into 4 regional leagues(north, south, east and west), each 14 teams. At the end of the season the top four teams play a champions league playoff. Then 16 teams are split into 4 groups of 4 and each group game is one leg. And after that it just progresses like a normal knockout tournament. The 6 teams below the top 4 in each regional league could do the same and then the bottom 4 from each regional league. The champions league and confederation cup would be scrapped and domestic leagues would continue, except the top teams are promoted into the African Super Leagues.
With one leg in each group the top and bottom teams would play a maximum of 38 matches while the middle teams would play a maximum of 40 matches. Two legs in the groups would only add 3 extra games, and with no champions league or qualifiers; teams would still be playing a reasonable amount of games.

One thing similar for all continents would be how the fans would like relate with the opponents, unlike the small and closely related countries of Europe , Asia and Africa have large countries. With respect to Asia , Me being from India would not be able to relate to a club from China as an opponent during an Asian super league game there’d be no passion, no banter nothing for the fans , I’d rather watch a regional derby
They should partition the super league between north and South, with even central if possible. The same as American sports leagues where it’s partitioned between west and east. With playoffs at the end of it all.

Splitting up the Super league into regional conferences somehow (example North/ south) could help with travel for at least the beginning of the competition. Might not be the most fair competition wise but I don’t see how else to tackle the travel issue
@Lalibela Dogo Wouldn't be fun either cause it just turns into the "Arab" league vs Black league final when it's much better to earn your stripes. Last year a small team from Senegal eliminated Raja Casablanca from the CL, but it would never happen in Super League.
In the short term this sounds like a great idea, more sponsorship and viewership but it would affect players heavily. With fixtures being played almost every season (even during the summer) and everyday a new tournament pops up there would be a dire effect on footballers. Also CAF and FIFA are both organizations with history of corruption so I don't think either of these organizations have African footballs best interest at mind. It is an interesting idea but I do not think that it can be a reality for now until we know how the tournament will function and how it affects other tournaments.
I think Africa is too big for a single league, but I agree that many of the continent’s leagues are too small to be profitable. I think the solution is a middle ground: regional leagues. For me, having 4-5 regional African leagues might be the right size, plus it would still allow for an African champions league.
The best split would probably be a North African league, a west African one, Southern Africa, East Africa, and a potential 5th for Central Africa (tho I think it’s quite reasonable to split central Africa between east, west, and south)
I’d like to add that I think there are several regions that could benefit from this. A united Caribbean league and a united Central American one would increase CONCACAF competition. I think Oceania is another place that could really benefit, either thru regional leagues like Micronesia and Polynesia, or thru a united Oceania league competing in Asia

In life, one must embrace risk and not fear failure, for therein lies invaluable lessons. Africa's past struggles should motivate it to take bold steps towards progress. Problems often find their solutions when action is taken. To succeed, Africa must dare to try and, if necessary, to fail, as this is the path to growth and transformation.
I don't see the Super League idea no matter where doesn't work. It isn't practical and it isn't about culture. I agree in investing in infrastructure but where CAF and everyone should be focusing on is the grassroots of football. Giving them flexibility and funs not creating a 'big boys' club like new leagues

-In my opinion, CAF Super League (CAF SuperL) should run parallel to current CAF Champions League (CAF ChampL). The CAF SuperL should be divided into 2 regions of North and South of 10 (or more) clubs each. And after round robin in each region league, top 4 should advanced to knockout rounds to get the CAF SuperL champion of the season.
-The CAF SuperL should be treated as the top league in CAF ChampL just like the Top 4 leagues in UEFA currently: English Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga and Serie A, albeit with more automatic slot. Top 4 clubs of each regional league in CAF SuperL should get CAF ChampL Group Stage slot, while middle 4 clubs get a playoff slot, and bottom 2 clubs will not get any slot. This should discourage any clubs to get free slot to CAF ChampL even with the dismal result in CAF SuperL.
-And CAF ChampL itself also should be revamped. The North and South division should be created just as current AFC CL with their West and East division, to reduce travel cost (Africa is huge). Each division's group stage should have 12 teams (more is preferable): 4 clubs from SuperL, 4 clubs from automatic slot and 4 clubs from playoff.
-For the 4 automatic slots, let's fix the CAF 5 Year-Ranking. To ensure fairness, the points of the individual clubs participated in SuperL should not contribute to each of their respective association. Which means the points of Moroccan league association (FRMF) should minus points of e.g. Raja Casablanca participation points in 5 year calculation if Raja Casablanca have joined SuperL. After the calculation, top 4 association in each North/South regions can have 1 automatic slot to ChampL Group Stage.
-And let's also talk about CAF Confederation Cup (equivalent to Europe League). The current CAF ConC structure also not helping with less prize money but with the same travel cost as CAF ChampL. Let's use the 5 regional federations (UNAF, WAFU-UFOA, UNIFFAC, CECAFA & COSAFA) to held their own group stage and crown their regional champion. And the 5 champions will advanced to next knockout rounds to crown CAF ConC champion. This should further lessen the travel cost and each country in their regions can have more slot based on CAF 5 Year-Ranking and the size of group stage (the more number of groups, the more slot each country can have). The slots also based on the participation of teams which dropped from ChampL playoff.

Africa is so big the logistic will be a nightmare, but I believe we can do it in four clusters North Africa, west Africa, east Africa and south Africa each cluster can have ten teams by end of the season the champions from each cluster play against each other in one country in that case logistic, different seasons transportation will not be a big issue
African Super league isn't the answer to African football woes. This is a nonstarter as well. The detailed concept of a super league is flawed and fishy, but unfortunately we don't have the fine details for this African super League. Maybe, just maybe if it's different from the European one, once it's public we will know all, but from the info. herein I doubt it will be.

They're thinking about splitting it to 3 regions. each region will have it's own league and then the qualified teams from all the groups play against each other in the play-offs. It might sound reasonable but it's really stupid and not fair, the North African region has most of the best teams in Africa and they mostly dominate. It's not fair that we play against each other in the group stage while other teams TP Mazembe or Sundowns will have it so easy to the finals.

I was watching Concaf matches and it feels like it's still 1960 going out there as an Indian i feel tech in Other countries is behind in every aspect leaving Japan and South Korea of ofcourse and before someone preaches me about football in India I feel more sophisticated tech is there in Cricket from a Decade which the footballing world is using just now and Indian football is growing as fast as you can expect

Another main difference between European and African Super Leagues is Europe does not need another grand tournament. UEFA Champions League exists and is already a global phenomenon, while CAF Champions League is below the expectations.

I think it's better if CAF just improves CAF Champions League, Confederations Cup & Super Cup than introduce a new tournament. AFCON every two years is fine but maybe every three years could be less hassle. Here in South Africa, CAF Champions League isn't that popular. All we know is two clubs have won it. South Africans only like local soccer or European football for those who can afford satellite TV, African football is usually just noticed by us fanatics.
Exposure is the key....but CAF is now growing in SA
IF the league is commercially viable then the funding issue is not really a problem. There is no shortage of investors that would gladly put their money into the project, if it is commercially worthwhile.
Dangote for example has been obsessed with buying a football club for at least 10 years, while he is mostly associated with Arsenal, he has gone on record saying that it doesn't HAVE to be Arsenal.

As a South African, I really wish to abandon my home team Orlando Pirates and start supporting Al Ahly.
I just want to support winners.
But I can't support them if there is no relationship built, as they are way up north, going against teams I know little about, and aren't familiar with. So I can't support them.
But with a superleague, I can compare them side to side with tes I do know like Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Kaiser Chiefs.
Which means I can see them beat my teams, or I can see my teams beat them, which would be extra cool.

If those clubs could profit some sort of benefit in this kind of competition, good things could come out
Hear me out 4 regional leagues with like 15 teams so it’s like 60 teams but u only play in the area and then the top team for each “Conference” goes to a 4 team playoff. That way there’s no travel problem and every nation can have a team and maybe the national leagues continue but without the teams in the caf league and then maybe sum form for pro/Rel can be worked out
Or they can actually divided to 4 group and play 15 matchdays to decide the Champions.

Personally, I do think it a good idea for the big clubs. But for some countries and leagues it wouldn't be fair for example the algerian league because it is still the 4th best league in Africa but hasn't the same clubs qualifying for the African competition. The most important question is who's gonna participate to this African super league?
Only the top team. The rest must paid $500,000 to enter the tournament and enter the qualify round.
I disagree as a Raja Casablanca supporter , it's better to play our local leagues and get qualified for Champions league or CAF cup as usual. Against Modern Football.
Exactly, it would be a shame to only put Raja and Wydad in the league when Morocco has other competitive teams like RS Berkane. I'm Congolese and I think it's a horrible idea to only put TP Mazembe and AS Vita in the league when other top teams like St Eloi Lupopo are investing for a continental spot too.

Africa and asia/ofc should have super leagues. Would bring big funding for these country's football. I think concacaf clubs should join the Copa liberdores

Good idea. It won't work unless people are actually invested in raising Africa's football standards rather than profiting from it. Profit should be secondary in the early stages
It's all connected to the economic progress of African countries; we can not have a competitive and high level in all champions leagues without pushing the African leaders for making economic reforms and propel Africa into the right path.
They should just do a super league and then a bunch of lower feeder leagues. Build the same structure as the FA but in all of Africa. Maybe that’s a bit too large of a project I’m no expert on African footy

If Africa is going ahead with this plan they should divide up the continent like they’ve done with the nba, East and West instead it would be South and North as travel times would be greatly decreased. Each country would have 1 team as theirs already 52 countries = 52 teams. Only problem we could see is South Africa as it already has a league of its own, some other countries may as well but idk. This is just an idea at 1am and now I am going off to bed 🛏

And also we don't have to pick one club from every country cuz some countries leagues are down bad , just like the European one we should pick the best clubs we don't pay attention to bring them all to it

Don't be stupid. As someone that follows African leagues and the African international competitions this wouldnt work. Some teams have tons of troubles to play a simple champions league game due to scheduling. If anything Africa should divide itself in 2 or 4 different regions and play 2/4 different champions league. It would be much better for travel and would promote more teams to international champions. The winners could then play a small African Super Cup for an absolute champion. Most big stadiums made recently for international events are already in such a bad condition it's not even funny, I've seen much older not to date stadiums in much better care. Africa has potential but it takes time, decades worth of time. A super league would be a horrible thing.

South Africa has great infrastructure but is by no means a powerhouse in African football at least the national team, we need restructuring.
Africa has the most talented footballers but only a small percentage are discovered.
This will only serve to remove the wealth from African countries and communities and put it in the hands of the rich. Like when a supermarket moves into town, provides jobs and cheap food until the area is dependent on it. Then all the local shops are forced to shut down because they can't compete, no more bakers or butchers or fishmongers. All the money generated by the community leaves the community right away instead of being spread around. It's financial exploitation and must be opposed
When European clubs start to suffer because of Saudi league spending power, and fans realize the names on their backs are leaving, the euro super league idea would be revisited.
