- African Football? There's no such thing! You'll see football styles as contrasting as the Sahara Desert and the Victoria Falls, as diverse as Berber and Bantu love songs, and yes, as different as the football skills of Mohamed Salah and Édouard Mendy. But where do the best footballers come from? Which country produces the best talent? Tell us what you think in the comments...

DR Congo has one of the best leagues in Africa too, with Mazembe and Vita Club being amongst one of the most successful clubs in Africa.
@Sebastian Saam The federation not properly investing in the development of football within the country. For example last year in March, when Congolese footballers playing in Europe couldn’t get to Africa because of the transport being blocked (thanks to COVID-19), the federation didn’t bother trying to get them private transportation. Instead they called up local players, now it wouldn’t have been that bad if the competition was named CHAN, but no, it was the AFCON qualifiers and the game against Gabon was a must win game. DR Congo stood no chance against Gabon who managed to align all of their players unlike DRC. The youth system is also no good ( and never was). The federation also rather steal millions 💰💰💵 instead of investing it in stadiums, kits, equipment to help the local league, developing the youth system, and invest in women’s football. It’s to the point where even Congolese born would skip call ups to focus on their clubs.
It's probably raja

It’s regressing instead of going forward….I hope they step it up soon
Exactly. Yet his documentary focuses on the north, south and west. This is arrant nonsense.
Shaun bartlet, quenton fortune, mark fish , lucas radebe, bennie mccarthy...South African had a strong squad back in the days......it's so sad how the south african national team has gone so down...I hope they are able to rise again...I remember how they were a fearsome side in 90's and early 2000's ..love form Ghana....
Backward thinking. The big 3 haven't produced any good enough player in the last 10 years. All they do is buy buy ready made players and the youngsters aren't given a chance, some of which are way better than the senior players. At Pirates for example, you have Azola Tshobeni and Thabiso Sesane, they both better than Linda Mntambo, Djzukamanja and Tyson Hlatswayo on their respective positions, they've proved it whenever they were given a chance but they are frozen out while watching the senior players make rookie mistakes.
Thankfully the current Bafana coach selects these young stars even when they don't get much playing time with their clubs, coz he knows quality and he's here to play ball not make favours to agents.

The DR Congo has contributed a lot to football. Players like kompany, mbemba, wan bissaka, mandanda. It’s a long list I can’t name them all. They all play it top leagues around the globe. The top 3 to be exact. The problem is the Congolese football association. Look at France and Belgian teams and you will see the amount of players with ties to the DRC. The problem is no player wants to play for a country with no structure. Plus the way in which the country is looked at by western countries is not appealing. Just search any African country and say players who could play for them, you would be surprised.

I hated to see how the French flag spanned across the forehead of the Continent. At some levels, politics affect football. Political instability always impacts football negatively and it does not matter the country. Look at history!
Cameroon transcends central west Africa geographically So it is both west and Central Africa. The culture of cameroon is more of west Africa
And West African countries have been doing amazing stuff when it comes to football.West Africans are hustlers

'West Africans are hustlers"...thats egotistic thinking, hustlers are found all over the world.
In Southern Africa football as a sport is competing with many other sporting codes. As opposed to North and West Africa were the main sporting codes are football followed by basketball 🤷🏽♂️
That is an excuse. South Africans are just not as genetically athletic as the West and North Africa. West Africa only makes up 5% of the world population, but 99% of all humans to run the 100 metres under 10 seconds have been of West African heritage. 85% of the NBA are players of West African heritage, 75% of the NFL are players of West African heritage and 40% of the Premier League is players of West African. If West Africans cared about Rugby or Cricket they would dominate that too and be better than the South Africans. The West Indies when they cared about Cricket dominated it for 30 years and Caribbean people are just displaced West Africans. And while North Africans have more Arabic and Europe heritage, they also have have Black African genes too because they boarder many West African countries.
@@Delboy0 keep feeding yourself that lie, if the issue is genetics than why not win the Word Cup ? Because when it comes to physicality West Africans come second to none hahahaha 🤷🏽♂️

@@Delboy0 So why is South Africa a big player in rugby? This should be impossible, if they are physically not strong enough 🤔
@@flyingsquirrel2620 Because they are the only nation with a big black population that takes Rugby seriously. They are essentially doing well in a white sport. Do you think if the USA, and West Africa cared about Rugby and played their best athletes played Rugby, South Africa would be as good as them? Of course not. Just look at France and England in Rugby with just a small number of West African heritage players and they are just as strong as South Africa, a team of West Africans would blow South Africa off the park.
First of all great piece. It really tried to give an elaborate explanation as to why certain regions don't excell in football while others do. I'm a Kenyan and I'll try as much as possible to debunk some of the myths why Kenya is currently not reffered to as an African Powerhouse. Well first and foremost Kenya has always been and still is a sporting Nation with Kenya being represented in almost all sports. Rugby, Athletics, Cricket, Volleyball, Basketball, Football, Tennis etc. However, lets stick to football. Kenya has qualified for AFCON 6 times 1972, 1988, 1990, 1992, 2004, 2019. The first 4 times only 8 nations used to qualify. So we were a big team if we consider the number of teams that qualified. Now there's a reason for that. And just by the way Uganda reached the final of Afcon 1978 and lost to Ghana 2-0.There was a period East Africa was dominant.
Gor Mahia which is the most successful club in Kenya with 19 titles is the only team in East Africa to have won a continental title in 1987 and was also the first in East and Central Africa to do so against Esperance de Tunis and in that year two Kenyans Peter Dawo and Ambrose Ayoyi were named in the top 10 best players, in fact, Dawo scored 10 goals in that campaign. Other teams such as Tusker FC formerly known as The Kenya Breweries, reached the final of the CAF Cup winners Cup in 1994 but lost to DC Motemba Pembe and if you look at the history of the continental club competitions in the 80s and early 90s, Kenyan teams regularly featured in the latter stages of the competitions. In the 70s up till the 90s, regional club football was taken seriously in this part of the continent with the CECAFA club championship being the creme dela dreme of club football and between 1977-1987 Kenyan teams won all but one regional club title which was dubbed the Cecafa Club Championship and in 1988, CAF Cup Winners Cup could have potentially have had an all Kenyan final were it not for African politics where Gor Mahia was denied a training pitch for 3 days when they face Inter Club of Congo and AFC Leopards, Kenya's 2nd most dominant club, were knocked out in controvesial circumstances against Diamant of Cameroon.
The reason why Kenya was strong in the 80s and 90s is because the government had established centres of excellence in various regions in the country and the players from those centres were really talented and skilled and hence why Kenya was dominant up till 1992. However, systems grow when you inject new ideas and that is what Kenya failed to do and the centres were eventually closed. Albeit, Kenya still produced good players and teams in the 90s and this was witnessed when the Kenya Breweries reached the final of the Cup winners cup in 1994 but lost. What absolutely impeded the growth of football was the 1996 AFCON. Kenya was slated to host that edition but due to politics in the country the rights were snatched away from us by CAF and handed to SA and Kenya was subsequently handed a two year ban which resulted in us missing the 96 and 98 AFCON editions only to make a comeback in 2004.
From that period, no concrete investment has been made in football and sports in general with many parents discouraging their children from pursuing any sports as a profession. In fact sports is only regarded as a hobby and is seldom taken seriously in Kenya. We don't have proper youth structures in Kenya across all sports and if Athletics was a team sport, there's a high possibility that we wouldn't be as good as we are at the moment. Lack of investment, poor leadership in the early 2000s to 2010 ocassioned by wrangles within the federation stunted our growth and even after the wrangles, the subsequent leaders have not provided visionary leadership to take us back to our glory days.
The few individuals who have made it from Kenya for example Wanyama, Mariga, Oliech, Olunga just to name a few, have been extremely disciplined because it was all down to sheer luck. They did not get the best preparations but due to their passion and love for football, they managed to progress their careers and rub shoulders with the best in the European continent. If sports was economically viable and promising in the country, we would invest our time, money and effort into it but it really isn't. Kenya has a vibrant economy and other sectors are more lucrative than sports so hence the reason why we don't invest in sports. The notion Sports is a hobby or a pass time engagement has massively hindered the growth of sports and football in this case and until we get rid of that notion, we will continue sinking in the depths of despair when it comes to football.
Where were you when we did this? :) Thanks for the great comment.

@@dwkickoff this is indeed a great comment! But sorry DW, in the Video, i find it pretty sad that you let some people, who call themselves journalist or scientist, express a couple of times that nigerian Players are more successfull at football than kenyan players because nigerians in general are more ambitious than kenyans!? And kenyans are lazy? That's pretty racist. I think you should've dived deeper into the subject on this point. And if you didn't find some good answers, than rather say nothing about it instead of racist tendences. I know, you acknowledged that kenyan long distance runners won a lot of olympic medals, but at least because of that you should've let fall the argument with ambitions and stuff. Doesn't matter if this guy you quoted is kenyan himself. Besides that, i really liked the video and also your other docs, keep up the good work
'This is All Ahly fans while their team is just training"
But I can see people hanging on others shoulders
Kenya is not about ambition as the Nigerian said. here, its an issue of systems. there is no established youth system and the good players we used to see in high school decide to drop out of the sport as there are better career options than football in Kenya. add to that the mismanagement of funds by the football bodies in Kenya, it makes football nothing but a last ditch career option unless they can secure their way out of Kenya while young. We have talented footballers but the football body only cares about the money they get from FIFA and enriching themselves.
Very true
Now the ambition that Nigerian guy is talking about comes in here : while the Kenyan drops out and gives up, the Nigerian works saves money and travel out of Nigeria to find a club to play in there are Nigerians playing in Azerbaijan, Saudi Arabia, Oman, south Africa, Ghana, USA, France, Italy, turkey, Seychelles, even Afghanistan or Iraq I can't remember which a guy some years ago used to write to Nigerians back home on a social media site about his experience living in the country as a footballer.
Many who don't have enough money to make the trip use the more dangerous Sahara desert through and through Libya to Europe.
It's like this I'd rather d!e than not succeed mentality west Africans Especially Nigerians have. Kenyans wouldn't attempt any of these even if you paid them and assured them they would not die.
And we see this attitude not just in football but in music, movies, business, religious organizations and other works of life. I don't know where you are but I can assure you there is either a Nigerian bank, church, school or Nigerian owned business within 500meters from where you are Now. Not because Nigerians are very very rich but just that Ambition. If things don't work out for me as a Nigerian instead of feeling like it's over or I have failed I'll say no way this place must be the problem and I will move or this business must be the problem and I will change business but I will NEVER give up. I will NEVER Feel or be hopeless even when it's obvious there is no hope, no help is coming from anywhere I will still have that ambition that drive to succeed no matter what.
And unfortunately this attitude although has it's many good parts also has bad aspects in that some will turn to crime all in a bid to want to succeed no matter what.

Great Documentary Dw. From a Kenyan Perspective, I would say that their is talent in abundance in our country but the main issues are lack of structure ( scouting, football pitch), too much football politics be it in management ,team selection and running of our almost dying league there is also an issue of sports as hobbies and not serious careers leading to a blaise' attitude moreso in football where there is close to no success story for inspiration. Lastly their is a saying amongst football fans in my country...If you want to see serious football go to the village and grassroots there is something serious there unfortunately there has never been any serious scouting done to tap these individual they end up hanging their playing boots quite early to feed their families.
There is talent thats true but if you go to west and north Africa you will see alot more than we can offer

Great piece at chasing shadows. All arguments made do not make sense. Each region in Africa has a sport they excel in. East Africa excels in athletics, volleyball, hockey and rugby. East African teams especially from Kenya dominate these fields. South Africans have excelled in Rugby and cricket. My point is, lack of motivation cannot be a factor why Kenya does not excel in football and Nigeria does. That would also means that a lack of ambition makes West Africa not excel in Rugby or athletics. As I said, this piece was very excellent at explaining nothing and chasing shadows.
It's classic divide and conquer...but will Africans ever learn?

generally west Africans are bigger that is fact not necessarily stronger in all respects...what is a complete joke is the 'ambition' part...Kenya dominates in a broader range of sports than any west African country .The reason is Kenya and in extension East Africa ismuch more phenotypically diverse than west Africa....western Kenyans for example are just as big and strong as west Africans whereas peoplefrom other regions of Kenya are somewhat in the middle.Different sports have different physical demands....by the way physicality is not that important in football as much as say rugby.

As a Kenyan and football lover I would say Culture, Mentality and Politics are the big issues here. Technique and skill is everything. In Kenya, culture is the biggest impediment; generally people don't value it as much--hence the low investments and mismanagement.

Rugby demands alot of physique. The African Rugby scene is dominated by South Africa teams; South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia etc and East Africa Teams; Kenya and Uganda. South Africans concentrate more on Cricket and Rugby rather than Football. However there has been talent from South Africa. Steven Pienaar managed to make it to the premier league.
East Africans concentrate more on athletics, primarily long distance running. They also keep their bodies very light so their legs won't give up on them when they run for 2 hours+. As the video suggested Wanyama was an exception
@@velox5598 also true
There are 9 traditional dominant countries in African football. Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, and Cameroon. A similar number to Europe who have England, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, and Italy.
North and west are top 2 when it comes to football
Yes
West Africans are naturally bigger, stronger, and faster. North Africans are technical and skillful
Westafricans produce better players.
That's not true

That's a stupid argument. East Europeans are bigger and stronger so why is West Europe better at football? East Africans are better at athletics.

The journalist did a shoddy of reporting from naive commentators who don't know even what is happening in Kenya
Hao mafala ndo maana wanachinjwa kila mahali wanaenda.
It was so cringey I vomited. Just because one region is more successful at football than another doesn't mean they're superior or have better genes. Bc then East Africans could argue they're superior and have better genes since they're better at Olympics. It's a stupid analogy. Several factors influence success and genes is usually never one of them. Even European and american regions don't have same level of success despite having similar ethnicities. It's like saying Brazil and Argentina have different genes to colombia do they're superior. Stupid argument

Waiting for a similar video about Asia or Concacaf football
Colonialism is something as Africans we need to overtly address. Systems and trauma.
We need everyone together as 1.💙
West African football is more focused on physical attributes and expression similar to the South Americans while North Africans are more akin to the European with tactics and focus on technical ability.
Agree and disagree
I’ve never seen a west African side or player play with what you describe “Physical attributions and expressions” west African players of the current time who are playing in Europe’s top leagues play with European flare and tactics and are physically one of the weakest players on the pitch. The last west African player who played in Europe comfortably with his own style of play is okocha, the rest are some European b u m licks but looking at North Africa, they are the real ballers and finish any situation in style and never play with European tactics(that’s why there isn’t much North African players in the top European leagues, because they don’t easily adapt.) they play their own mind on the pitch so don’t start this debate here
You cannot rely just on physical attributes to win a football game. You need tactics, strong mentality group of players, and at least some technical ability otherwise you cannot be a pro. Having a good coach is also important to go further in competition.
Disagree completely. North Africans have the similar physical attributes and show expression on the ball. Salah and Hakimi are two of the most fast players itw. And Ziyech and Mahrez are outstanding dribblers.
@@peanutbutterchocolatecake6182 there are more westafrikans player with talent than North Africans hence why there more of them being famous.

The truth is that, there is colonial legacy implicated in most of the issues and things happening in Africa and the African diaspora. It all comes to national commitment to football. Fair analysis. Thank you.
What a wonderful program thanks to you guys.
I have been looking for what's wrong with east Africa football now I got answer
East Africa is dominant in other sports...look at track for example.
I think one important thing that wasn't considered is the fact that most players playing for west African nations were developed in Europe, this would explain why the Congolese national team is not that good(most of the players who grew up in Europe are reluctant to represent the country because of of organizational issue) despite the fact that they have one of the most decent leagues in sub Saharan Africa and the best local national team.
When it comes to countries like Kenya (where I live right now)football is still very much king but it is always interesting to me how people seem to be disinterested in local football compared to the English premier league. On sport news, they often talk about European football and won't even report on the result of games in the local league. Football is very much a business today and need investments and if nationals are not willing to watch local games and support these teams, no one is going to invest in them. This is changing in Tanzania with the recent rise of Simba.
The Kenyan national football league is struggling because of the poor organisational structure and corruption. You see, the athletics team does exceptionally well despite these same challenges. I genuinely think Kenyan football has a lot to offer but things on the ground need to change first.
Anyway, I'm supporting The Pharaohs this tournament, go Salah
Thank you my friend 😃😁 all love from the land of Pharaohs to our beloved Kenyan brothers
First of, there is nothing like Eastern Africa. It is East Africa short and simple, and come to Cameroon and see how much undiscovered talents we have in the hinterlands

In Cameroon football is all we live for. Without football in Cameroon 🇨🇲 I think they will be no Cameroon. Cameroonian love football more than anything else in the world. I think west African history are more ambitious than east African and the southern African. Western African are so much ambitious than east and southern Africans. I have lived with friends from east Africa most of them are so not ambitious at all. But I think it could be culturally also because look at a country like INDIA 🇮🇳 and CHINA who have more than 3 billion people but have never produced a good player.
India has produced players like, IM Vijayan, Sunil Chhetri, Bhaichung Bhatia, PK Bannerjee, Tulsidas Balaram, Chuni Goswami, Krishanu Dey and many more. It's just that they aren't known to the world
@@hulk8384 lol keep telling yourself that
It's not a matter of ambition you are totally getting it wrong....
I'm Nigerian but I disagree with what he said about Kenyans are not as ambitious @ 9:33. What about the Olympics and Racing then? Aren't Kenyans the best in the world, would you say Nigerians aren't ambitious in that aspect. Would you say for example Indians are not ambitious because they don't make it to the world cup?
The fact is that Every people have what they are more naturally good at in terms of sports. Indians - Cricket, US - Basketball, West Africa - Football, China - Martial Arts, etc.
Bro please before saying such arrogant words with no standing point, but just emotions, please put our pays (Cameroon) out of it. Who told you that others are not that ambitious. The only thing that makes the difference with our brothers from the eastern and southern parts of the continent is our big mouths. We just make a lot of noise on our achievements (which are worthy) as compared to them. Because going of football and looking at other aspects, you’ll understand that we are very little too in others domains as compared to them. So please, mind your language and try to know facts before saying out such statements
Loved this one!
you didn't talk about many Congolese players who are playing in Europe in doing well 🙄
In South Africa 🇿🇦 the is a civil war between SAFA and the PSL led by 2 politicians hence the League and the National team are two different stories. Apartied also played a huge role in that cause during the golden years of South African football, South Africa was not affiliated with FIFA to create the culture of South Africa and Cosafa excellence in the Continent like in North African nations which would bring more culture and winning mentality which would bring investors. Now Cosafa is playing catch up with the rest of Africa
SA did have a pretty good team in the 90s and early 2000s after apartheid ended. I honestly don't know why the national team became so bad after that generation.
@@theultimatesharpshooter6734 probably the in flux of European coaches and South Africa trying to be something it's not. South African grown coaches are the only ones who understand how South Africans play. Each country or race of people have their own rhythm of movement, hence why there is different styles of play. But now with them trying to be Europeans(thinking that they're better) South African football has regressed. SAFA is a mess that will take years to be fixed.
The 90s and early 2000s still had the remaining talent who were taught our style of play. It is no coincidence that the more foreign in our appointments we were, the less we were. And there are countless other problems as well, you would think that after the 2010 WC that we'd be dominant in international football. The main improvement though has been in CAF Competitions, because team have now started to take them seriously.
Can’t blame that on apartheid. SA was very strong coming out of apartheid. Get politics out of sports. They are destroying cricket and will also destroy the springboks.
@@lamintouray7386 but South Africa had a stronger team during Apartied
@@theultimatesharpshooter6734 South Africa has a football Identity crisis. The most successful South African teams were coached by locals. Yet, the ruling football body undermines these coaches and prefers international coaches instead. Hence, our continuing inconsistency on the world stage.

About to watch the video. But the answer is, the best African Footballers come from the West.
Hey DW your analysis is messed up. Please focus on only football. If it comes to Sportsmanship East Africa and South Africa are ahead of the world. Talk about Olympics Athletics Boxing Rugby. Cricket. How many world records does West Africa have
Eastern, Central and Southern Africa are predominantly made up of the Bantu people. Maybe football is not in our DNA. Then Again majority of west African players were born and groomed in Europe where they accessed better football facilities from a tender age.
THANK YOU!!! West Africans keep trying to claim us in Cameroon when we know that we’re Bantu people, and we’re closer to central and South Africans. Yes there are a minority of west African ethnic groups that are indegenous to Cameroon but the Cameroonian national team is dominated by Bantu ethnic groups.
West Africa actually has 1 less afcon than central Africa. Central Africa has 9 west has 8

What if this documentary is completely one hour instead of 15mins...I have never watched a fairly good short documentary on African soccer like this one.
Yes, the documentary has touched all aspects of African football but not in-depth, that's was the reason I mentioned in my previous comment. what if the film goes beyond 15 mins, perhaps would be great if you can widen the scope by bringing more on merit and demerit of African football as it impacts European football.
Because African football has its unique specialty passionate by its fans. It has been under highlighted from the global scene, that's the reason all such belittling comments emerged by highly rated Liverpool coach. This type of documentary is timely for the growth of African football. More of this DW.👏👏👍👍
