Robert Newton is so menacing in this movie- awesome! David Lean said that the reason he was so good at evil characters was because he was such a 'kindly' man.
I've been looking for this movie for ages. I saw it once on the BBC in 1970! When the film was over, the announcer said, "It's great to see old Robert Newton having such a great time" The end of the fire reminds me of the end of another great film, "Rebecca," Mrs. Danvers set fire to Mandalay & is seen in the window of Rebecca's old room, first in silhouette, then closer as she shields herself from the flames. She,however, unlike Robert Newton, did not look like she was having a great time.
That's what I love about Robert Newton, he always looked as though he was enjoying himself, even in his more serious roles. He had such lively eyes, full of mischief! Apparently he was quite a naughty boy in real life. He was once having a 'long lunch' with a fellow actor when he remembered that they were appearing in a Shakespeare play that afternoon. He duly arrived at the theatre and brightly said to the rest of the company: 'If you think I look pissed, wait 'till you see the Duke of York!'
