Newton's greatest role, and among the best pictures in any top 100 list. It's awful it's not available on DVD.

Totally agree with Adrian P , the book is absolutely stunning, - I've watched only 10 minutes of this movie and they've SO totally altered it, it can never come anywhere near the impact of the book. How do you put a person's thoughts into film? And so much of the book is about the thoughts of all the different characters, esp Brodie.

Sadly, when you have enjoyed a book as much as I did this one, the film is never going to be as good as the descriptions you make up of the characters in your head (as for the story ..... no where near.

I'm reading the book and I kind of expected Brodie to be scarier... But it's still a great movie!

"You cant call a guy who made more than a 130 movies a jerk, when all you can do is watch."

A jerk, meaning a villain role I think. Mason did play many adversary roles but I have seen him in some heroic parts also. A great actor no matter what role he portrays. I think that it was meant as a compliment, though, not an insult, by the jerk remark.

Are you saying Scottish authors are rare to non-existent? You can't be saying that, it's impossible, much of the world's most treasured and prolific writing was done in Scotland by Scots. (Buy not by the "scotch." So I realize you might be talking not about the Scots of Scotland, but another people entirely. If so, my apologies.)

This is *not* an adaptation of AJ Cronin's novel! It is an absolute travesty of his first and possibly finest work. I have only watched 20 minutes and every single thing from the beginning chapters of the novel are twisted, turned, altered and generally given the "Hollywood treatment" which I did not know happened in those days. This film begins with Brodie portrayed as a lecher chasing the barmaid. Doctor Renwick "visits" Mrs Brodie. Some wee naff speaks to the barmaid to get a job from Brodie. Not one of those single things happen in the novel and I'm afraid I gave up after 20 minutes viewing. I obviously need to rethink my thoughts about Hollywood's treatment of classic novels which I thought was a modern phenomenon. It obviously started more than 70 years ago!

Congratulations on seeing twenty minutes of a movie that's only 10 minutes long.
