Thank you so much for posting, how have I never seen this before! Real story, real actors - how do they manage to peddle their crap in the cinemas today.
Absolutely nohing like the book which is a masterpiece. They have completely altered the story, changed the sex of key characters and completely removed others. There are events in the moviebthat never occurred in the book. Still, I enjoyed the movie just as entertainment value but it pales into insignificance next to the book. My absolute favouriite book of all time.
What a film & what a wonderfully wicked tyrant that Brodie character was! One of the great forgotten villains in British cinema history. I was on the edge of my seat hoping this cruel bastard would get his comeuppance in the end. It was only fitting that he went down with his castle. I only came here looking for Deborah Kerr (and she was wonderful as always) and yet discovered so many delightful characters. It was also interesting to hear the comments in how the book differed from the movie too.
Yes,it is not all so like in the book.the end is another, with tragic and also happiness.I readed the book in age of 15 years, and just, the last 2 weeks,I am 64 years now!But the roman and all the other novells of Cronin are moving me,ever and ever.i am a fan, too!he must been a very generous man!
Thank you for uploading this film which I've always wanted to see! It's disappointing that there are so many changes to the original book which is much more powerful. The film is very sanitised and there are many errors in costume and how things should have been portrayed. The worst things however were leaving out one of the most important characters and completely changing the ending! Having said that, it was very absorbing and interesting to me as I am a great fan of A J Cronin's novels.
in the book, James Brodie had a daughter, Nessie, he had a moustache, he had a son, Matt, and his mother was living with him. plus, Nancy left him because he was cheating with Matt, Mary came back, 4 years after she was kicked. brodie's employee wasnt Denis, and Nessie killed herself by hanging. Oh, and James wouldnt burn down the house.
Wow, that eulogy was most cruel! The only brave and good-hearted character in the whole film was, oddly, James Mason, playing most out of character for him! And why did he look so much like Tim Daly ??? This film has left me with a sad, dark feeling :(
Robert Newton was only 36 when this was made, the same year as 'Major Barbara', where he looks totally different. Deborah Kerr also appeared in that and he had to punch her in the face in that film too. In her memoir she spoils his 'baddie' image somewhat by recalling that the 'gentle' Newton was worried he'd hurt her and had to be persuaded by Kerr to give her 'one good slug'. He ended up loosening her tooth and giving her concussion! It seems he was right.
I understand the difference between a book and a film. The original book will always be better than a film, as it is not possible to get into the mind of the author and translate it visually to everyone's satisfaction. However, that being said. A story is being relayed here and it was an enjoyable film......Maybe for the satisfaction of those who read the book....the title should read an 'An Alternative Story of the Mad Hatter's Castle....just a suggestion. A good film with lots of lessons to be learned.....ty for loading.
Wow, this is like the Hallmark Movie Channel version of the novel. That's how GRIM the novel is. HIghly recommend the novel. Definitely a film where one should consider the movie and novel as separate stories. Cronin's only compensation for this film adaptation was not artistic, it was simply CASH. ;-) But viewed just as a film melodrama... without knowing the novel, this movie is a crackingmelodrama. A movie where Newton is fabulous as a cold hearted villain with self control is "Obsession" aka "The HIdden Room". None of the wild eyed looks he often does as a villain.
Oh, you say,in the movie is no Nessie?Nessie is a very important person in the book, she was the girl, what should make Mr. Bodies dreams real! And also I don´t remember for a person named Angus.you are right!
But,Mr. Bodie did not die to the end!He stood alone in his castle with his dement old mother, after all members and friends were going away from himn, his wife died, his son was gone with Brodies love Nancy, all friends, and at last his daughter Nessie, she did die from her suicid, hanging in the ktichen.at last the doctor cames and has gone away to Edinburgh with Mary.not from the church.like here. But I want to have the movie,I would be so happy!
lol, someone must have thought the book sucked, so they have rewritten it :)) Angus?? who the hell is Angus? where was Nessie? Oh...this is the problem when you first read the book...

Fantastic! Thank you for sharing this. I also enjoyed seeing James Mason in this. Can't wait to read the book. I wish I had read it first.

Thanks for showing what happens when you reap the whirlwind...
For everyone who thinks this film is good, just go and read the original book.... And be stunned - it's magnificent.
Thank you.. an amazing film
Thank you..this was wonderful and one I had not seen!
Deborah Kerr reminds me of a young Judy Garland with those big eyes and beautiful face.

@Janeinwales
I wonder why did they even keep the name of the book if they changed everything else in it??? I hate when they do that!!!

In the last scenes, Robert looked more like Dr Jekyll or Werewolf. Certainly knew how to look like a crazy😱

My name is Brodie james mason;)
Thank you - it was spellbinding to say the least (yikes!)
The film was absolute rubbish nothing like the book, it was like lots of little sit coms, having no continuity!
