The octane learning thing is going to be every Elantra N owners excuse for anytime they get beat now. I can see it already based on most comments in here. 😂😂
What some are also failing to realize/admit, the MK8 GTI is underrated as hell. The GTI makes its advertised crank horsepower to the wheels and it weighs less than the Elantra.

When octane learned, the EN also makes its advertised hp to the wheels… Go look up the Car and Driver data. When octane learned, the EN has a faster 0-60, quarter mile, and 0-130. The EN also has a better power-to-weight ratio when octane learned. It’s not an excuse if it’s just straight facts… I love the GTI as much as you do but I’m not gonna stick my head in the sand pretending the GTI is faster than the EN. Now, if you wanna say you prefer the GTI because you get great power all the time on 87 and don’t need to do some dumb ritual to unlock extra power, I agree with you!

EN owner here. So for people who get confused on this, a NON octane learned EN makes the advertised HP of crank 276 which makes it about 240-250 whp. The GTI is about the HP is makes advertised to the wheel and with it being a little under 100lbs less than the EN. A LEARNED EN makes about 280 whp and somewhere around 310-315 crank. Makes the car annoying to have but that advertised 276 is right no matter what whether its from the crank or to the wheels. Rematch coming soon when learned💪🏼

Super fun races! People definitely sleep on the DSG GTI. EN definitely needs good gas and octane learning to compete. It’s kinda stupid that Hyundai even gave it that feature. It’s legitimately the difference between pulling mid to high 13s (not learned) and pulling high 12s to low 13s (learned) in the quarter mile. I can link videos of the EN hitting high 12s and low 13s with official time slips if anyone is interested.

I thought some more about these results and did some analysis.
Car and Driver results give the EN a decisive edge over the Mk8 GTI in 0-60, quarter mile, and 0-130. Based on their times, they almost certainly octane learned their EN. If we look at power to weight ratio alone, the EN octane learned has a CLEAR advantage, so the C&D numbers make sense.
The only way for the results in this video to make sense is if the EN has a lower power-to-weight ratio. So how do we figure that? Well, some have said (and some dyno results back this up) that the EN makes the advertised 276hp at the crank when NOT octane learned (instead of the 280 at the wheel when octane learned) which could translate to being somewhere in the 240s to the wheel without OL. THAT would lower the EN’s power-to-weight ratio enough for the GTI to pull on the EN-but to THIS degree…? Still doesn’t add up. Factoring in the weight of the entire additional person the EN had in the first couple runs kinda makes sense, but the solo runs just straight up don’t seem right. I mean, it just doesn’t pass the eye test imho, but maybe this really is how it shakes out.

I often wonder how much more power an engine makes by switching from say 91 octane to say 100 octane? Can an engine adapt to and make more power on 100 octane or is it overkill as cars probably don’t adapt much over 93 octane? When I had my E92 M3, someone on the forums dynoed 91 octane vs 100 octane on an E92 M2 and the car made 35 hp more and about 40 lb-ft more rear wheel power. I ran my E92 M3 at Thunderhill Raceway in California and the car came alive on 100 octane. The downside was 100 octane was $9/gallon at the track and the car was averaging 5-6 mpg on the track.

@@mapletree4283 Stock EN is not going neck and neck with a Mk8 Golf R.. I already did this video, and he was octane learned during it. If you'd like to create your own video with your Elantra N racing a Golf R and beating it, feel free. I'd love to watch.

Octane learning is a real thing… Is it dumb? Yes. Does it have a significant impact on the car’s performance? Also yes. Your bizarre attitude about it is just unnecessary and provides zero value to the conversation

@@Symphoniics he repeated damn near 10 times that it needs to octane learn and that he doesn’t plan to tune it lol so everytime he races and gets beat that is literally gonna be the same excuse everytime . Which is why i said then get a different car that doesn’t have that octane learning nonsense
