I have had my 6-spd Performance Blue N for 24hrs and say what you will about polarizing looks, I just found both the GTi and WRX driving experiences positively bland by comparison. This thing is just wildly entertaining. "Nice" enough to impress some passengers, or at least need no apologies lol-- "Hardcore" enough to have me shaking my head and smiling constantly. Steering feel, brake feel, diff, throttle response, shifter AND sound--- every element has a true enthusiasts touch. Fantastic..........
wdym nice enough to impress passengers? it has the most hard plastic in its class(more then a base model civic, but also not including the spartan WRX interior which is the worst). It's not bad but it's a cheap interior, that's known, not soft touch like a gti, but that's fine they had to make compromises somewhere, it's an AMAZING car, even the kia forte GT has a good exhaust sound vs rivals, hyundai KNOWS how to make a brilliant exhaust!
@@roboticvenom1935 lol... The "no buttons" climate and infotainment system makes the GTI a no-go for me. Plus I can only imagine the cost to replace that unit if something fails beyond the warranty--basically the whole dash will need to come out.
Everything going touch is keeping me away from a lot of current vehicles. I can't wrap my head around how anyone decided making everything "touch" was safe.
Honestly the style of the new gti is fugly. Yes the Elantra is polarizing but it stands out and it’s different in a good way. Also with a better interior and better track time it’s a winner. Can’t believe this dude chose the gti

The E-N has already been proven it can beat the (washed up, neutered) WRX. The GTI is also easily in its sights. Not all things should be base on speed alone.
@@RossBradleyAudio...that's great...curious to what tires were on each...the development of the DSG box wasn't just for outright speed (although it is faster). Drivers have been moving away from three pedals and manufacturers saw sales of automatics dominate the market. VAG needed a way to sell high performance cars to ppl who can't/don't drive manuals and the DSG/PDK boxes were born. Look at racecars; they seldom have a manual these days and opt for a sequential/direct shift box for that extra tenth/hundredth. A change in owner preference is the main reason for the rise of autos. Subaru has a good car in the WRX; howevwr, Subaru has had no real competition to keep developing the car (on a world stage). The car lacks overall refinement and relies too much on "Symmetrical AWD" as the saving grace. Interior refinement needs work and could stand to be quieter. FWD cars have made leaps and bounds in recent years and now, with electronics, give AWD cars a run for their money. I would love to see the same test on wet pavement. AWD are nice, but they don't provide the advantages they used to do in the past.
I don't know if I'd call the wrx washed up as much as a car with a different purpose. No question the GTI and E-N are better street cars, but the WRX is the only one of the 3 to still be a well performing perfomance car during canadian winters. I know for myself I'm torn between the Veloster N and the WRX because despite being a huge fan of hatchbacks, the fwd of the N just will not come anywhere close the AWD performance of the WRX when that snow starts to fall.
If you are in a fairly sunny spot all year round, no question though that the wrx falls behind basically every other car in it's bracket, but I feel like that's kind of the trade off for AWD.
@@AK-ZL1 And also people act like they're going to drive the shit out of those cars on the track while most of them will not even push the car. I owned old WRX, a 2020 WRX, Golf GTI, Golf R, Integra Type-S, etc and honestly most people bragging for a car will not even push it to really see that limit beside a street 0-60. Like you said, the WRX is AWD and is a huge plus if your the type of guy to do some off-road or live in a snowy place. Each car has it's advantages and while some are definitively better, people saying things like "the N destroy the washed WRX" or "The WRX smokes whatever" make me laugh.
@@lesgrosgainz agreed man. It's a car with a different purpose. On gas usage alone, I wouldnt recommend it to anyone who lives in somewhere sunny all year long, but for someone who lives in the northern prairies, I'd 10/10 recommend the WRX as it's basically the only viable performance car in that scenario. The fun you'd get out of any FWD or RWD car will be incredibly short lived if it snows more often that not.

Great video! Love this format, and would like to see y'all continue to test cars on this same setup so we can see how other cars compare to these times. As a 2-gen WRX owner (2002 and 2015), I'm really disappointed in the lack of performance that was added for the new gen WRX. The only model I was interested in was the GT for the adaptive dampers, but would never get one because of the CVT.
A year later have you seen modifications people are doing with the new WRX? People are pushing 350WHP+ with exhaust, intake, tune. Its insane what this FA24 can do now
Elantra N.. too serious? Wait what? It looks really good. Perfect, cause they could of done way more and thankfully they didn’t. It’s perfect the way it is!
Not sure how you can give a 'A' for the GTi for ergonomics when it has touch for everything? Would have been better if you said 'originally an A, but due to lack of buttons, goes down to B'. I'm nitpicking sure..
I have a 2016 WRX and I have to say that the entertainment centre display is ENORMOUS compared to my current one! The outside looks are growing on me I have to admit, will have to see one to give final judgement
I think the Elantra N will look really good in Black! Does it come in that color? Or is are the N models only with the sky blue color with red accents I was against All Hyundai and Kia styling but rather than tone down they doubled down on their styling and it kinda has started to grow on me.
It’s comes in black! And no not just performance blue (sky blue). Clearly the car in the video is grey, not blue. In USA you get white, black, grey, baby blue and a regular deep blue
I had a black veloster n and while I will say the black looked aggressive with the red accents, the performance blue (baby blue) is a superior color and you should really see it in person. I plan on getting an Elantra N (trading my camaro ss) and am waiting for a performance blue one that’s not marked up insanely (they all are). Also not sure if I’d want a dct or manual. Narrow gymkhana and low-speed slalom. There is advantage in the car with the light body weight. AWD is more disadvantageous. GTI 1430kg, Elantra N 1445kg, WRX 1600kg. For WRX, penalty game. If the test is made a canyon load or Nurburgring, it'll be a contrary result.
Great review. To the point and giving us most important info. and I loved the driving segments with your first reactions included all in one take. As a mk6 GTI owner I think I would buy an Elantra/sonata/veloster over the mk8 GTI. Obviously GTI are very tunable but the fact Hyundai have made their cars so performance oriented right from the factory really makes me love them. Kinda like the mk8 Type R or focus RS. But for cheaper than a GTI. can’t really go wrong there if you ask me
I owned an MK7 GTI and couldn’t wait for the MK8. As soon as I saw the interior of the MK8 I bought a Sonata N Line. Loved it. Ended up trading it for the EN and couldn’t be any happier. Most fun car I’ve ever owned by a long shot
Nice man! I love this segment. I've owned a MK6, WRX, and now the Elantra N. All great cars. You really can't go wrong. That said, the N is by far the most fun. Maybe not the most refined, but it's not bad there either.

The Elantra N may have won either way. But slightly unfair to have the DCT against 2 other manuals. But I get you can't control what press versions you get
yeah and it has pilot sport 4s, the GTI has cheap all season skinny tires, tow different worlds. savageese compared them properly and had pro drivers drive each one around VIR, he said the GTI would only be around 1.5 seconds slower then elantra N which is impressive
I have a Kona N and I have to say Hyundai knows what they are doing with the N models. I have had the most fun driving in this car compared to anything else I have driven.
I have the Kona N traded in my Veloster N for it and love the Kona N. I’m a hatchback guy and the Kona N checked all the boxes. couldn’t do the new GTI infotainment so awful. The Elantra I like but to long and not a hatch. Great video.

Would’ve preferred an “All Manual” comparison or “All Auto” but I get it, great vid still 🔥 but I traded my Focus ST3 for a Mk7 GTi PP few months back and now the Elantra N is callin me 😭🔥
focus ST to mk7 is BIG upgrade, also all GTI's above/at 2017 have PP standard and a nice exterior update, they look brilliant. Tou need to tune your GTI, unlike the focus ST the GTI gains an absurd amount of power, talking 300WHP 320WTQ after a basic tune and downpipe.
@@roboticvenom1935 funny thing is I actually wanted a Mk6 GTI 3-door before I copped the ST, had to make quick decision since my bday was a few days before purchase, it took a while for me to like 5-door Mk7s, I got a ride in one stage 1 tuned, and knew I needed it especially SneekyTuned, I had tabs for parts opened months before I even knew if I was actually coppin the GTI 😂 it’s still stock but will be doin only mods that don’t require tuning to avoid voiding warranty

The Korean Avante N usually has 280 horsepower and 290 horsepower when NGS is operating, but the export version Avante N usually has 276 horsepower and 286 horsepower when NGS is operated. Why does it make a difference?
The EN is good for the community. Koreans have been coming up lately with this and the stinger and such. It’s nice to see healthy competition. I’m bias toward the GTI because… well I bought a Mk8 R :P. The interior is just much nicer and has wayyyyyy more features than the others. It’s the best daily by a large margin. But that EN truly is a nice car if you can get past the looks of it. I’m happy it exists.
I don't think the N will beat them, but I'm sure it'll keep up, and prove that for less than GTI money, it has near Type R performance. That is what I've seen at my local track.
The big red button is N Grin Shift. It is not how you activate launch control. N Grin Shift starts a 20 second timer of increased boost for an extra 10hp. It is a function that is completely independent of launch control and can operate with our without it while in N mode.
Love it! Normal reviews are too plain Jane and I think that there is too much bias towards what grade the factory tires and cooling ability when CarandDriver do their annual laps around VIR. Way too intense to not modify the car to have a more suitable intercooler, brake, and tire set up. Perfect intensity to see what these cars are about from the factory. Have you guys done the Veloster N on an autocross? I think it might be the best choice to blend a shorter wheelbase of the GTI and the power of the Elantra N.
My 2020 GTI Autobahn has launch control. Kind of a hidden feature, have to hold the traction control button until it says ESC Sport and then put foot on break and accelerator and it will display launch control on the screen.

MK8 GOLF Gti with DSG on a short track was about a 1 sec faster than MK8 Gti with manual transmission. If you compare MK8 DSG and Elantra N DCT there will be no more than half a sec difference in favor of VN. I like what Hyundai did with ELantra , but overall GTi is a better car all around and for every day.
Hyundai has to though. They need to stand out because nobody is going to buy a Hyundai unless it stands out a little more. The GTI has history. So does the WRX, so they don’t need to add all these weird lines, colors, and big wings, GeForce people to want to buy them, because people buy them for their history. Hyundai has zero history, so they need to “pop” on design and features.
Then it would look like any other car again... seriously, I am glad they do something else, I want cars that look different again and not like every single one comes from the same friggin factory.
Elantra N for sure. Don't want German reliability to be a nagging issue and I was pretty disappointed when I drove my friends WRX. Love the Elantras style and if the ride is anything like the Veloster N that I test drove a few years back then it's going to be so much fun.
I really like my MK7 GTI. It’s practical, economical, light, nimble, and takes very well to mods, but it’s biggest downfall is it being FWD. I’ve owned RWD sports cars, and they’re just so much better at putting power down, as well as cornering. I plan on keeping the GTI for a while, but I don’t think I’m ever going to buy another FWD car if I plan on modifying it.
I have an Elantra N manual. It's too bad you couldn't test the manual for this video. It's not exactly a fair comparison. Also, it was insinuated that since the Elantra N is a auto, it has launch control. But, it should be known that the manual also has launch control.
I wanted to test drive an EN before I bought my mk8 GTI but no one had one anywhere. WRX is just hideous so it wasn’t even an option. I’m really happy with the GTI!
Coming from every GTI since the MK5 I went w the Elantra N. It’s much more engaging than the new GTI but to be honest down low they are just as fast so 0-60 times are similar with both models being dual clutch. Top end the Elantra N is closer to the GTI clubsport that’s only sold in Europe.
@@legatus9081 omg. That’s pretty funny. The GTI is the best hatchback for decades… the Hyundai is decent… but it doesn’t compare to the GTI… enjoy your Korean car… I will look for you in my rear view mirror
Of all the info in the video, I got hung up on that you were by the Dulles International Airport. You guys were literally over where I work and I missed it.
The only reason I wouldn't choose the Elantra is because I'm not too fond of the front. Looks mean a lot to me just as much as power and reliability. If I were to get an N model, I'd either go for the Kona or Veloster.
@rishi4828 do people, such as you, that weren't a fan of the first gen Elantra N front end enjoy the brand new face-lift front end more? Idk how I feel about it. I want an elantra N but refuse to buy one unless it's new for the warranty
I think this comparison would have been more appropriate if all of the cars tested had the same style of transmission. An auto transmission could definitely make the difference in times.
I would've liked to see the manual Elantra N in this comparison, I think it could've shaved a few tenths of a second on that time since the manual is lighter.
Yeah, I agree. I think it would have been a more "fair" comparison as well, since the first two were manual. I went with the manual Elantra N (in white) myself, so I was disappointed they went auto in this comparison.

There is no where to go with the elantra though. No closed deck short block no forged internal parts no brembo kit no transmission or engine mounts. No j or downpipe available. Subaru's aren't fast but they have potential. Elantras do not.
@@CharacterZero89 the fact you need to do any of that just to keep up with a Hyundai is pathetic. One bad part, bad tune, on a tuners bad day, and the modded shitbox wrx engine is toast. The margin for error with that pile of shit is narrower then the minds of it's fanboys.

The "no buttons" climate and infotainment system makes the GTI a no-go for me. Plus I can only imagine the cost to replace that unit if something fails beyond the warranty--basically the whole dash will need to come out.

If you compare MK8 DSG and Elantra N DCT there will be no more than half a sec difference in favor of VN. If Hyundai could just give the N a better looking exterior without all the excessive creases and angles it would have a winner.
I was thinking just the same as you but tbh it's growing on me especially with this grey color and the black color as well it stands out so well
Hyundai has to though.

The gti is my pick! Not only is it the only real hot hatch. It’s the best looking one and the one that will retain value the best. It also has a great history!
For the rest, well it’s a Volkswagen so quality will be present.
