It was more dangerous than I anticipated. I will need to bring a suitcase dedicated to books next time. Many people have shared how good Born a Crime is, so I’m glad I bought it on a whim! -Sierra
Kindred is so good! That Crime and Punishment cover is amazing! Before The Ever After is such an amazing book. Jacquelime Woodson is incredible. Trust is so good! I was so happy when it won the Pulitzer. Isabel Allende ❤
SOOOO many good books I just added to my TBR after watching and I’m so excited ! The Tattooist of Auschwitz is ✨incredible✨…I can’t wait to hear your thoughts AND dive into some of the books y’all mentioned that I hadn’t heard of before 🙌🏽🥳🥂
so many people have said this so far! love our comment section because, thanks to the AJ Fikry love, I'ved moved it to the top of my tbr. thanks for commenting! - jon
Amazing vid as always! My TBR already has some new additions :) LOVED Girl, Woman, Other, so great to see that on the list. Also great to see you pick up Geraldine Brooks - she's Australian! - I quite liked March, but I ADORED People of the Book, that is so beautiful. For March, it is based on a character from Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, so would recommend you read that first if you haven't already!
Awesome picks. Sierra I know you said you've had a tough year with 5 star reads, I think the Syfy you've branched into are gonna be greatly rewarded. Super solid books! Have fun in these worlds guys.
Happy Birthday Sierra! May I suggest the Bullet Swallower if you all haven't already read it. It's a Western, with some magical realism, and told from the Mexican experience of dealing with Americans most notably Texans. Tells a family history, with a dual/parallel timeline.
Sierra! I just finished If An Egyptian Cannot Speak English and had to report back immediately LOL. I loved it! I'm a library reader, but I'm adding this to my (very short) Buy list. (Trying to keep the rest vague and avoid any kind of spoilers, but iykyk 😂) At the beginning, when I realized what the overall relationship was going to be, tbh I was skeptical. I wasn't sure I'd really care to read about that, and was worried there were too many chances for the ending to "ruin it". But then all of a sudden the writing was beautiful, I was flagging every other page, the culture/class/social issues in the context of the relationship brought it to a new level. And I wasn't bothered by the formats at all. I know the ending didn't work for everyone, but I was 100% satisfied.
A dollar?! Looking up flights to Bermuda now 😂 Great finds! I LOVED Pachinko. I also want to read The Buried Giant, so curious to see what you think! Also I want to hear about the Mongolian Empire historical fiction series - I've read a book by that author set in the War of the Roses era (I think) and something I think is a strong suit is how he handles multiple perspectives. Curious! (Also happy belated birthday Sierra! 🎉)
Appreciate the comment! A Bermuda vacation is always a great idea lol - I'll be sure to let you know what I think of the Genghis Khan series when I get to it
The Bluest Eye is one of the best books I've ever read and the fact that it is a debut release is absolutely insane! Recitatif is also incredible! Kindred is sooooo good as well, very low sci-fi, Butler is a GOAT. I really need to re-read Slaughterhouse Five but I also just need to read more Vonnegut lol. Girl, Woman, Other is fantastic and should have won the Booker prize to itself, not sharing it with The Testaments.
Huzzah for used books stores! And what great finds! I loved "The Promise," a fantastic novel by a South African writer set in the post-Apartheid period. "Slaughterhouse Five" is a classic that I could read over and over again. "Girl Woman Other" is absolutely phenomenal. So many more great titles. Nice job, and Happy Birthday!
Huzzah! Is the best and only response. Too true. And I’m sooo excited for the books you mentioned in particular. I’m still stunned by how good of a haul it actually was! -Sierra
Wow, amazing haul!! I would have been losing my mind in that used bookstore, haha. I recently picked up Kindred used as well (though not for $1!!) and can’t wait to read it. Also very interested in reading The Storied Life of AJ Fikry, My Brilliant Friend, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, Station Eleven, Pachinko, and The Wager! Oh and happy birthday, Sierra! ❤️🎉
Tommy Orange’s newest book, Wandering Stars, was just longlisted for the Booker, so There, There is a good buy! I think the two books are related, so reading There There first may be a great idea.
You can't beat $1 for some great books! Born a Crime is fantastic! Trevor narrates the audio. Kindred is phenomenal! I hope you both love it! Deacon King Kong was a great book! You both got so many other awesome books, too! Happy Reading!!!
I’m excited to get to it! We got so many books, I’m not even sure where to begin lol. But it looks like Girl, Woman, Other was beloved in the comments - Tattooist of Auschwitz was also mentioned a handful of times! -Sierra
Fantastic book haul filled with books I've read, want to read or that sound interesting. I have so many thoughts but don't want to write a long comment so will just say Octavia E. Butler has been on my tbr for years. For some reason this year I've now read three of her books with Parable of the Talents from the Earthseed series being the book I just finished. Leaving off with a favorite quote from Morrison's The Bluest Eye, "And in the night, when my coughing was dry and tough, feet padded into the room, hands repinned the flannel, readjusted the quilt and rested a moment on my forehead. So when I think of autumn, I think of somebody with hands who not want me to die." Oh and Happy Birthday Sierra!
Happy bday Sierra! Well this is the best book store ever!! Books are so expensive in America, so I bet you couldn't believe the prices 😊 and to have such great books!! I've read some of these and have loads of them on my physical tbr, so I look forward to your reviews. Good job this isn't a local store, your tbrs would be in the hundreds pretty fast!!
Great video! I don't watch many hauls, but you guys are so excited about all these new books which made me smile a lot. I loved Kindred, Recitatif, Red, White & Royal Blue and Girl, Woman, Other. My Brilliant Friend wasn't for me personally, it's very slice of life and didn't really catch me, but I'm clearly in the minority with this.
Thanks!!! Honestly, I’m still excited bc we found such good books. Good to know with My Brilliant Friend. I love slice of life, but I have to be in the mood for it. It’ll help me plan my reading - thanks! -Sierra
Oh my goodness!! It looks like Girl, Woman, Other and then Kindred essentially “won” in the comments. Looks like station eleven will be my 3rd read of august 😂 -Sierra
Kindred by Octavia Butler is AMAZING! I randomly read it last year and now it is one of my top five books of all time. It made me go check out her other work, which are also great.
First of all- I love the fact that you make long videos! And although I generally don't watch book hauls, yours are so interesting with all those anecdotes and thoughts, I enjoy them tremendously! I discovered Octavia Butler two years ago and have read and loved Kindred and the Xenogenesis-trilogy so far. Hers are the only sci-fi books that I enjoyed, besides The Sparrow by M.D. Russell. The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry I have read many years ago and I remember it as a cosy romance. Still have to read Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow ☺️. So glad you guys will read The Brilliant Friend! I also thought that I might only read the first one, but liked it so much that within the next six months I read the other three as well... I am also fascinated by Gengis Khan and my library has all the books in the series by Conn Iggulden! I will read the first one for sure and see how I like it. It says it is historical fiction and fantasy!?!? And last, Colm Toibin (Cuh-lum Toe-been)- I love all the eight books that I have read by him. He is brilliant!
Love this comment! We are happy you appreciate longer videos, we tend to talk a lot lol! Excited to get into Octavia Butler's works for sure and definitely recommend Tomorrow x3 (I loved it more than Sierra due to the video game nostalgia). Can't wait to hear your thoughts on the Genghis Khan books! Thanks for commenting! - jon
omg the dan and phil music 😭😭 my two worlds are colliding rn. i can’t wait to see what you think of station eleven!!! it’s been on my radar. also i really liked born a crime! y’all got a very good selection of books i’m kinda jealous
We were honestly so shocked by the selection. I’m excited for Born a Crime! I might do the audio book along with it based on comments! And Dan and Phil are essentially my childhood. When they dropped royalty free music this year, it felt serendipitous. -Sierra
I loved station eleven and I would actually also HIGHLY recommend the hbo miniseries of it, it has some phenomenal acting and improves on some of the weirder plot/character elements in the book The buried giant is my favorite Ishiguro. It’s definitely not for everyone but I totally vibed with having two older mcs in love and continuing Ishiguros really strong exploration of personal and cultural memory
Such a good pitch for The Buried Giant. Reading these comments have gotten me more excited about getting to it - and I might not have ever heard of it if I hadn’t seen it at the store! -Sierra
Out of all the Emily Henry books, People We Meet on Vacation seems to have the most mixed reviews. I am super curious to know how you feel about it given it creates such polarizing opinions. Can’t wait to see a review!!
I keep hearing that! People seem to rate it the lowest out of her books so I'm excited to see what I think. If it's the lowest, I can only go up from there haha - jon
I hope you read the Buried Giant-it was so atmospheric. Curious to hear your thoughts. And the Mongolian empire series sounds like such an interesting niche find.
I have this “rule” that I can only buy classics second hand so my classics shelf is a HOT mess haha I want to buy penguin but I am stuck with those old Wordsworth editions :’)

“One dollar paperbacks” is SUCH a dangerous thing to say to me 😂 also Born a Crime was fabulous!
It was more dangerous than I anticipated. I will need to bring a suitcase dedicated to books next time.
Many people have shared how good Born a Crime is, so I’m glad I bought it on a whim!
-Sierra
Long Story Short is such a cute name for a bookstore !!
Right?! And they have the cutest things there, too!
Kindred is so good! That Crime and Punishment cover is amazing! Before The Ever After is such an amazing book. Jacquelime Woodson is incredible.
Trust is so good! I was so happy when it won the Pulitzer. Isabel Allende ❤
Excited to get to Trust and Kindred. And thank you for validating my purchase of Crime and Punishment haha

The Storied Life of AJ Fikry is one of my all time favorites.

-Sierra
Great haul. Born a Crime is a good read.
I’m excited to get to it!! I’ve heard only great things.
happy birthday Sierra !🎉 I love nothing more than bookstore hopping on my birthday so this was so satisfying to watch. Great haul guys 🌸
Thank you for the birthday wishes!! Honestly, same. It’s my favorite thing to do!
-Sierra
Awesome picks. Sierra I know you said you've had a tough year with 5 star reads, I think the Syfy you've branched into are gonna be greatly rewarded. Super solid books! Have fun in these worlds guys.
Thank you!! Any in particular you think would be good to start with?
Happy Birthday Sierra! May I suggest the Bullet Swallower if you all haven't already read it. It's a Western, with some magical realism, and told from the Mexican experience of dealing with Americans most notably Texans. Tells a family history, with a dual/parallel timeline.

Sierra! I just finished If An Egyptian Cannot Speak English and had to report back immediately LOL.
I loved it! I'm a library reader, but I'm adding this to my (very short) Buy list.
(Trying to keep the rest vague and avoid any kind of spoilers, but iykyk 😂)
At the beginning, when I realized what the overall relationship was going to be, tbh I was skeptical. I wasn't sure I'd really care to read about that, and was worried there were too many chances for the ending to "ruin it".

That was so similar to my experience!!! I was def skeptical at first, and then I fell in love with it! Glad you enjoyed 🫶🏽
-Sierra

I love you two!! Can't wait to hear some of the wrap-up videos for these books. You found some treasures for sure!
and we love you! can't wait to dig into all these books
“Did Merlin exist?” *shrugs* has me 🤣🤣🤣
The Storied Life is the MOST cozy - excited for you both to read that one ✨
Lol. I literally thought of you in that moment, and I was like, I can’t get into my entire train of thought here 😂
The Bluest Eye is one of the best books I've ever read and the fact that it is a debut release is absolutely insane! Recitatif is also incredible! Before the Ever After is INCREDIBLE!
100% - I just finished it and completely agree. It will be in next week's video
Tommy Orange’s newest book, Wandering Stars, was just longlisted for the Booker, so There, There is a good buy! I think the two books are related, so reading There There first may be a great idea.
I saw that it got longlisted - made me even more pumped to read it.
I am deeply impressed by your self-control! 😇 Do you know "The Personal Librarian" by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray? Recommendation!
Lol it was so hard. I still feel like I bought too much 😂 haven’t heard of it!! Excited to learn more :)
-Sierra
Reminds me of a book I’ve seen! “The Secret History of the Mongol Queens: How the Daughters of Genghis Khan Rescued His Empire”
Added to the list for my non-fiction reads (hopefully around the same time he reads his new book)
-Sierra
You can't beat $1 for some great books! Born a Crime is fantastic! Trevor narrates the audio. Kindred is phenomenal! I hope you both love it! Deacon King Kong was a great book! You both got so many other awesome books, too! Happy Reading!!!
Such good choices!!! Trevor Noah’s book has been mentioned a lot, so it looks like it’ll be my next non-fiction read!
-Sierra
First video here and I’m stoked! Really like your guys’ vibes and book tastes 🙌😁
Super excited to have you here! Thanks for commenting!
A fabulous haul!! I just added to my TBR LOL!! Tattooist of Auschwitz is a definite great read.

Good to know with My Brilliant Friend. I love slice of life, but I have to be in the mood for it. It’ll help me plan my reading - thanks!
-Sierra
I enjoy Strout’s writing but my favorite of hers is My Name is a Lucy Barton!
As someone who hasn’t heard of Strout until last week, I’m excited to try her! Good to know there are other great novels by her.
-Sierra
I just bought The Overstory at a used book shop too this past weekend, but “jelly” because I paid $4.00 😂
Lol. I feel like buying books this summer ruined ever buying another used book at another location again 😂
What great hauls! I read Station Eleven this year and it is my new absolute favorite book please do yourself a favor Sierra and read immediately
Oh my goodness!! It looks like Girl, Woman, Other and then Kindred essentially “won” in the comments. Looks like station eleven will be my 3rd read of august 😂

Kindred by Octavia Butler is AMAZING! I randomly read it last year and now it is one of my top five books of all time. It made me go check out her other work, which are also great.

HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY 🥳 Sierra
Thanks!!
🎊🎁🌟🎂Happy Birthday Sierra 🎊 🎁🌟🎂
Aw thank you!
Paradise and The Bluest Eye are two of my favorite Morrison’s!!
Okay this haul is so good - Kindred is truly one of the best books every written
No way!!! So exciting - didn’t even know and I picked them both up 🤷🏽♀️you see a Morrison, you buy a Morrison.
So many people have said this, and I can’t wait to get to it!!

I agree about the covers of Farrante's Neapolitan series. I personally find them to be so ugly and off-putting. lol
I feel so seen.
-Sierra
I loved station eleven and I would actually also HIGHLY recommend the hbo miniseries of it, it has some phenomenal acting and improves on some of the weirder plot/character elements in the book

I’m excited to get into The Buried Giant based on these comments! Atmospheric is what I’m looking for half the time tbh
-Sierra

I have this “rule” that I can only buy classics second hand so my classics shelf is a HOT mess haha I want to buy penguin but I am stuck with those old Wordsworth editions :’)
Lol. I have a similar rule and will usually buy them off thrift stores online. But you never know which edition you’re gonna get 🫠

If you read Neil Gaiman, you have to do audio! He’s a fabulous narrator!
Haven’t gotten to it yet! Will def consider it 🤍
-Sierra
"everyone loves neil gaiman"😬 well they certainly did until recently
Oh no! I clearly haven’t been on the internet in a minute, and I was going off of what people said about a year ago. But you’re so right. Thanks for bringing to my attention!
@@andtheywerereadersI figured, no shade at all! It’s just a shame to see our heroes fall so far!
@@momo_brobro so real.
a dollar!!?? booking flight right now
honestly lol
Lol I def had a friend bring my books back in a separate suitcase 😂
-Sierra
I read Trevor Noah's memoir earlier this year and it will probably be one of my top 10 books by the end of this year. I would recommend listening to the audiobook if you can or immersion reading with the audio. Trevor is a great narrator and a there are big chunks of the story that talk about his skill with language and it's cool to hear him talking in the various South African languages.
Putting myself on the waitlist as we speak. So many of the comments have praised this book!
-Sierra
