We love jazz too! What a great haul! Book buying is a true obsession and I will never give it up LOL James was a fabulous book. I had read Huckleberry Finn but many decades ago.
The praise I’m hearing for James is making me so curious! It’s not on the top of my list (lol I have recently purchased books that have bumped to the top of the TBR), but now I’m so intrigued!! -Sierra
I know this is totally random, but wouldn't it be cool if for fall you had a fall-ish intro and one for the hoildays/ christmas. Idk just something I thought would be nice to see :) I love yall's channel!
To the Lighthouse and The Metamorphosis are on my tbr as well as Martyr! which I'm really looking forward to reading. Will be looking forward to your future thoughts on the book/s.
Guys i loved the episode i definately subscribed!! Loved the casual chatter and seeing your picks Jon and the clothes were great!! Cant wait to watch some more from you both 🤗
okay but i also thought jon needed his own little book haul after watching your last upload!! need to keep the book universe in balance. so cute of your guys to include a little thrift haul as well. you both have such outfits/jewelry in your vids!
Cool to see some clothes as well. So cute to call shirts button downs in the US 😊 I started listening to the audible free edition of huck finn, but the racism was so awful I stopped very quickly. I really want to read James 😊 I've read and very much enjoyed 3 Virginia Woolf books. I did not know that about Kazuo Ishiguro and song lyrics!
Lol yeah, just the ones with buttons… leaning into the stereotype of how we name things in the US 😂 but I’m exciting to jump into my 3rd Virginia Woolf! -Sierra
I read Martyr earlier this summer and absolutely loved it, possibly my favorite read of the year so far. I have a feeling you both are going to love it as well! Great haul!
i'm excited for you both to read To The Light House! I read it this summer. That edition of Bad Feminist is gorgeous. I stumbled across the title while reading Bernadine Evaristo's Girl, Woman, Other which in part explores the intersections of feminism.
Glad you both are feeling so happy with your reading journeys! I’m going to do James and then Huckleberry after to see what I think, as I don’t want to wait. Short list for Booker is released next Monday 9/16 and I think I’ll probably sample all the short list-I’ve heard James is one of the strongest contenders but may not win because it may be too much of a retelling, so I want to see how it stands on its own without being recently influenced by the inspiration source. Then I can maybe try to predict from what I’ve sampled.
Fuuun! 📚❤️ Booker shortlist announced next week and winner in November. I still need to read There There before getting to Wandering Stars. Martyr! Is so good. Pleeease make a V Woolf video special. 🙏
Ooh, I was just in Bath, so you might have gone to the bookshop I saw. I had already bought two chunky books from Waterstones at Piccadilly Circus store, so I refrained from buying a book in Bath. Plus, we only had an hour in Bath and we wanted to explore the town and get fish and chips too. Did you see the Roman Baths?
If you’re interested in Rome history you should check them out if you’re ever in that part of the world. I wish could have had more than an hour in Bath.
Absolutely!!!! Ok let’s see. 1. Thick by Tressie McMillan Cottom is a personal favorite of mine. Intersectionality, US sociology, and articulate af. 2. Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay 3. Letter to my Daughter by Maya Angelou 4. Feminist Theory: from Woman to Center by bell hooks (not an essay collection, but a seminal work) 5. Sister Outsider: essays and speeches by Audre Lorde These are the first ones that come to mind. Most of them investigate intersectional feminism. I hope these are helpful!! 🫶🏽
You guys should check out some Little Free Libraries. I found 4 of the books Jon bought in Little Free Libraries. I'm reading Hera right now and it's pretty good, especially if you liked Jennifer Saint's other book Ariadne (which was my first Greek myth re-telling and started my obsession with it). I need your help. In one of your videos, Sierra mentioned her favorite Plato book talked about feminism. I can't remember what it was so I've been searching thru old videos to find it and I can't. Then it dawned on me......I could just ask. 😏 And last, I have a request. I believe the Sierra said that she works in Education. I would love if she could give us some tips for deeper reading. I'm trying to re-read the books I read in school and other classics but I feel like I"m floundering in really understanding them. I've actually considered going back to school for literature but the thought of adding more to my student loan debt scares me. I've been trying to put together free online classes and anything free I can find online. Maybe do like a book club series where you go chapter by chapter deeper into the meanings and show how you came to that understanding. I know you guys are busy and it might be too much, and that would be understandable. Keep up the good work!
I can’t remember which Plato book I was talking about, as none of them explicitly discuss feminism. I might’ve drawn a conclusion to feminism, but I can’t remember 🫠 but yes, pls always ask! We respond 🫶🏽 As for education, I too am not educated in literature. My PhD will be in Education - Learning Sciences, so I am also making up my understanding of the books! But! If there are any classics you specifically have questions about, I’d love to hear your thoughts! We may or may not have insights, but we’re open to discussions :) -Sierra
@@andtheywerereaders Well, that explains why I haven't been able to find you talking about it. 😆 I"m probably confusing you with someone else and another philosopher. That you are struggling too, makes me feel better. 🤓 I keep trying the classics I have and deciding that it's not the right time to read them (I'm a very mood-driven reader). I will pick one and stick with it this time. I've got Tenant of Wildfell Hall and Tess of the D'Ubervilles at the top of the list. Books with strong female characters usually go with whatever mood I'm in. 😁
I appreciate Jon always matching the wall with his green shirt collection 🤩
Lol he does love green 😂
-Sierra
Sierra said “Who’s Hera?” and I felt my heart shatter 🥴🤣
my Percy Jackson ass mood
I’m working on it, I promise 😂

Jon, your phone case is so cute!
Thank you!!! I got it from Casetify
I want to read Martyr too! It was blurbed by John Green and I love him the way Jon loves Tommy Orange
And I love John Green (and soon will prob love Tommy Orange). I hope to read it, too!!
-Sierra
Excited to hear your thoughts on Martyr! Cool find with the Kazuo Ishiguro book, too 📚
You may get to hear my thoughts on Martyr very soon.....
Was waiting for this inevitable video😂
it was only a matter of time (it took literally one day)
Just found your guy's channel and I'm so happy, you are both so funny and down to earth. Loved the video, thanks for sharing :)
Welcome! We're happy you found us! Thanks for commenting
To the Lighthouse and The Metamorphosis are on my tbr as well as Martyr! which I'm really looking forward to reading. Will be looking forward to your future thoughts on the book/s.
Hoping to get to 2/3 of these by this fall!

I like the idea of doing James first, actually. I feel like I’ll never get to Huckleberry, and that was kinda stopping me for a while.

@@andtheywerereaders Do it! Huck will always be there

Super excited for the booker prize announcements and getting into Wandering Stars! Can't wait to see which book wins

I’m determined to read There There this fall so thank you for the reminder. Interested to hear your thoughts on Wandering Stars.
Me too! I forgot to put it on my TBR, but I think it’s important that I get to it.

Jon, you made good choices with the books you bought and
I love your Attack on Titan T-shirt!
Sierra, are you going to Switzerland next week?
At the time of filming, yes lol. But I just got back!! It was beautiful 😍 I had an opportunity to present my research there!
