UA-cam ROCKS! You have no idea how many things I have fixed and how much money I have saved by DIY-ing as a result of learning how to do it on UA-cam....and your vid is one of them. Thanks a lot man!! Cheers from Canada!
HLSupply…Thanks for the Video. I tried the Rope trick. It held at first and then gave way. I pulled the rope out and only had 2 Knots! Then I tried fishing out the other two. Tried blowing it out with air, no luck. So I removed the muffler cover, and there was my piece of rope in the Muffler. I noticed the exhaust port was sort of rectangular and I could see the piston going up and down. So I stuck a piece or 1/8” x ¾” Aluminum flat stock in the port to the top of the piston. And that worked with just a 25” breaker Bar. No Jumping required.
This was a big help! I recently replaced the clutch drum on my 039 and since then it has quit oiling. I didn’t know about the worm gear. Now I know why and it’s an easy fix.
Nice video. I would recommend using a longer pipe for leverage. Say, something in the 10 to 12 foot length range. Have a helper hold the wrench and pipe in place, and then jump from a table onto the end of the pipe. This will produce the desired result easily and quickly.
Finally I found a video where someone showed the interaction of the worm gear with the notch in the clutch drum. I'm putting a clone MS660 together and no one addresses this. I had no idea how it was supposed to work.
so for anyone reading this down the road, i wanted to tell u what happened w/ my stihl chainsaw so maybe it would provide u with a clue. the local chainsaw repair "pro" got my chainsaw oil lube flowing again - all he did was take the oil cap off and put it on its side for 20 mins. said it was "air locked" which i guess happens when u take it all apart to figure out why it wasn't oiling the bar/chain in the 1st place. sounds like i fixed the original problem but in doing so, created this odd secondary "air lock" problem that none of the youtubers nor anyone online mentioned could happen when u introduce air into the oil's pathway. i'm a little confused why this wouldn't happen anytime u're out cutting wood and run out of oil in your reserve tank. maybe someone can explain that.....
I wonder what the oil pump looks like and how it connects to the oil reservoir and the lubrication "tube".... I barely saw the oil pump... what was wrong with the old one? This video had too much emphasis on the guy having a clean shirt and not getting dirty with the details. But I appreciate the tip on the piston stop.
All those muscles and I still thin Stihl is deleting all the useful videos of their product repair. You can find anything on Whirlpool, Kenmore, Maytag, etc. Squat on Stihl.
Technically you can grease it after the fact. There is a path leading from the center of the axle to the bearing. Most people don't know it exists though.
Kelsey, this exact thing happened to me today. After much searching I removed the muffler to find the piece of the rope which was sheared off. Then I put the new worm gear in ( i wasn't changing the pump, just the worm gear). This is when I realized that my rope wouldn't come out. Leaving the rope in, since I had no other choice, I tightened the clutch back on and when it was tight enough the piston backed off which allowed me to get the rest of my rope out. Maybe you already discovered this solution, but hopefully it helps if you didn't.
Dont forget to check the wee oil feed o ring is still in good order or u may have lost it when the pump comes out.....if in doubt replace its a 10 cent part .
you make a big deal about removing the clutch with the 10 ft. breaker bar and say nothing about reversing the piston against the stop and locking the nut back down.....i know it's common sense but maybe not to everybody........if you're supposed to be teaching you need to show more detail.............sometimes you can teach just enough to get somebody into trouble..,,,,,,,,,,,,it might seem too basic to you but that's not the case with everybody
Don’t put the rope where the spark plug goes, one thing can go wrong and your fishing out a piece of rope that got cut or snapped. I know from experience, just use an impact, and make sure if you’re taking it off to remember it’s reverse thread. Yeah pull the spark plug, but don’t put any damn rope in your engine.
Don’t put a rope inside your saw engine. Order a piston stop for $10. Also, buy a 1/2 inch drive wrench and socket set like any normal person would have. Perhaps there would be other uses for it like any given bolt you may encounter. What?!!!!!?! Never!!! Right, break you saw wrench and get some rope caught in your engine.

LOL
I burst out laughing when I read this! Good job on the dry humor.
Yes, the Tim Taylor approach always works best. lol
very funny, i love comments like this...........
Exactly how I do it but I jump from my roof while holding an 80 pound bag of concrete. Works like a champ.

thanks you. now i can follow the step to service my 044 stihl chainsaw oil pump. very helpful

Your video was very helpful and thank you so much👍
Dont you think you should have put some white lithium grease or some type of lube on the needle cage bearing

Can you do it without the piston stop?
Lovely content! Keep it up!
What do I do if the piston shears off part of my rope when I’m trying to take the clutch off? 😅😭
