- Sweet Serum is an amazingly versatile synth, but a little lacking in terms of FM synthesis. In today's lesson, we learn what FM means and how we can use Ableton's Operator with Serum FX to create a sweet wumpus. Let's get started.

I have a four year degree in audio production. And this was oddly the best way I've ever heard/seen FM explained.
YOU DRAW THOSE DICKS
I’m starting my major in audio production very soon. Anything you’d like to share about it?
Please don't share dicks
@@b26awesome Don't do it

This video should be used in schools to teach kids about sound design.
and dicks
Dave Lawlis 🤔 hmm
debating whether or not i should have my synthesis professor show this in class
And should be promoted for the entirety of Autism Awareness month.
Maybe cut the dick references to be less alienating
That video killed me in less than 12 seconds.

I love your videos dude!
A beautiful, family-friendly tutorial again, love you ;)
Michael Batchelor What kind of moisturizer ya using mike? You’re glowing in that picture
Holy shit. This was funnier than most of the standup I see on Netflix.
Mixing the humor in with legitimate knowledge makes for an engaging tutorial. Do a sound design series with the Wavetable and other live synths.
lol, "The Fundamental Phallus and The Secondary Dicks." great band name. (dibs?)
HARD CORE, sound design!!!!!
for the midi routing part, you could easily make an instrument rack with the operator, add a parallel "External Instrument" Device and route the midi to SerumFX, no additional messy midi track needed.
You're a very impressive educator. I really think you've found your calling in life.
Logic Live is better than FL Tools
Whaaaaaaaatttttt
@@deepakattri9094 didn't you know that? 😳
what the hell ??
i've used every daw ever created and i can confidently say Garagewalk is the best
Check out Cubase‘s Retrologue
WOWZERS, the phallus meta has modulated once again
I have never heard sound design described in "harder" terms... ;)
You, sir, have earned a new subscriber.
Welcome to the club.. Watch his older stuff.. SOOOO FUNNY
This is possibly one of the most enjoyable tutorials i've ever watched. Really hoping all the other videos are like this.
I bet you've seen more but they all are truly funny
man, every time I watch your videos, I literally understand how I suck at producing.
You're great
Next Video: Ableton's Analog is better than FM8 (For Subtractive Synthesis)
Lol from this guy's "simplicity is better" standpoint Sytrus blows Operator out of the water. But seriously, the whole point of wavetable synths is to *not* sound the same as everyone else, like using saw basses...
my thoughts exactly
Yeah he'll probably use FM8 FX to demonstrate too.
Dude, who needs fm synthesis when you pull out winky dinks…
@@soul_yt7842 however, most wavetables sound weak or muddy
This is inadvertently the best tutorial on FM that I've ever seen.
This is the single greatest tutorial I've ever seen
Bro I been binging your videos for a just week and it has already drastically upped my game (sometimes I have to rewatch bcuz I was laughing too hard). Thanks so much for the plain English, super informative and hilarious tutorials. Much respect. Wowzers.
dude, your videos always put me in a good mood. And then on top of that, your teaching skills are top class. Woot that's a solid 2 in 1. Much love
Subscribed for the phallio-centric synthesis.

SOCIAL MEDIA.
My brother isn't a producer or even a musician and he is over here dying of laughter. Thanks for this!
Finally! A video that actually explains how to synthasize sounds as opposed to just showing what knobs to tweak to generate a certain patch. Nice one!
"Run it through social media!" Brilliant! That line is gonna get a lot of traction! Great name for a distortion pedal!
Best teacher! Don’t stop posting tutorials. It’s entertaining & educational.
This is possibly the best, funniest and most well thought-out Operator tutorial in existence. I am passing this on to all my students. You sir, get a like and a new sub.
shit... i even rang that damn bell.
Very great concept man! Please do pad/ambient sound design with the Operator or anything else!
afxxxx
I second this
Yes!
Oh yeah pads !!!!!
nice aphex twin
First time watcher and you just became my favorite tutor you've got a way with words dude keep it up xD
This is by far the greatest production video I've ever watched.
Waoh man!!!... I had spend so many hours watching FM tutorials, and this is the firts one that really get me into... Excellent... Thanxs for the good vibes!!! Cheers

Nearly fell out of my chair laughing lmao
same man, same
In a sea of hipster bedroom producers who think they are masters at their craft when most have not got a god damn clue, this dude knows his shit, and his teaching style is both hilarious and outstanding. Well done sir. Gold star for you, and a sub well earned.
This is by far the most hilarious tutorial I have ever watched!!
Wowzerzz!!
Nice tips too!
Imma watching every single videos this guy’s doing. Right now.
Another great tutorial, I love FM synthesizers. Though my go to vst is fm8 but I may try operator.
I love these videos, great and funny tutorials :D
Dude! I've learnt more in this video than I have ever in music production! Thanks! Then you killed it at the end! Loved it!
First time on your channel.... I really wasn't expecting that! Useful, informative and entertaining. Wowsers!
The way you teach is just... so amazing even a logic pleb can learn.
Even a fl user.
Oh man i forgot this channel for a while. Wowsers. Still fun, original content.
Perhaps one of the most helpful videos I've come across.
The intro was enough for me to subscribe 👍 well played, sir.
Operator has such a specifc tone.
Pitch ramps give it away instantly in tracks.
Love it for being lite on cpu and drawing your own waveforms.
Cool channel
Subbed!
Dude, the climax had me actually laughing out loud. Or, lol for short! Excellent toot too man, thank you.
one of the best tutorials yet! learned a lot about Operator on this one.
this is the best educational video I have seen in my life
I wanna buy this guy a beer. 😅 best channel I’ve found
Very effective teaching lmao. But really, I learned a lot. Thank you brotha!
And this is how you Sir just earned a new subscriber. Keep on going, amazing job!
One of the best tutorials I’ve ever seen
I'm dying this is perfection
The Best FM tutorial I have seen, gr8 humour :D:D:D
Its Harmor.....like harmonization
Love your tutorials dude❤️❤️❤️
thanks for the reminders & put downs about production... keeps us humble.
Look man Im never gonna use operator because I dont have ableton suit but nonetheless this video gave me a better understanding of whats going on in FM and now I can Make even more wubby wubbs in serum, so thanks!
I assume it would apply to sytrus aswell if you use FL.
I'm kinda the opposite - I shelled out for Suite and can't afford Serum's exorbitant fees having done so. I wonder if there's an Ableton-only equivalent of the Serum effects setup they use here?
@@Skiamakhos there is, you can use envelope and lfo max for live devices to fire any knob on any device in the chain. search youtube for Ableton Live is a Modular Synth
When will man kind realise that toxic biohazard is the ultimate synth.
This is an insanely information dense video. Great vid man.
this is content.
i'm being entertained and educated at the same time.
i'd watch whatever you make
Thank you Underbelly I love your videos! I have a question too;
Is Serum FX separate from regular Serum? Or can I run operator through regular Serum as well? :)
*W O W Z E R S*
This is the fucking greatest Ableton tutorial I've ever seen.
Amazing tips. Lots of learning here, such a dope session !
this has been one of the most educational video ive ever watched, its equally as funny
Maybe this is really basic but I'm wondering how I can trigger LFOtool in the same way he triggers Serum FX here? I tried the same technique with LFOtool but I'm not able to get it to work.
I'm too busy laughing to watch the tutorial. Too funny.
Me too man, I'm in bits laughing here - "You're still the biggest dick in my heart Richard!" Lol!
BEST teacher I have ever seen. Really, I learned something that I can actually use.
Incredible teaching, what a great laugh this has been! Thankyou 😂😇

Very clever moves btw. The best quality guides over here!

The next time I mix for my church, I'm going to have to pause for a long time before I say the word "harmonics"
Underbelly, I come to you as a humble student. I use Ableton to record live instruments primarily. I’m in the market for a diverse synth plugin to use for auxiliary keyboards and interesting textures for my music. Should I get serum? What do you recommend to blend live instruments with midi? Thanks!
You can try Serum in a rent-to-own thing from Splice.com
Wowzers! I’ll check that out, thanks!
To be honest I was so bothered by your act and catchphrases at first... Now you have grown on me. You are in my head and I think I am a fan.
this is the best sound design tutorial i've ever seen in my life
I think Image-Line's sytrus is Better than Ableton's Operator (for FM)

+Reaction
Sytrus murders operator in fm and as a bonus in rm, as an a priori ableton user.
Fax
Sytrus has really great FM, RM matrix, true that
12:22 is all you need
the humor kept me engaged and wanting to watch it again to absorb everything I missed the first time around. "Wowsers"!!!!!! lol 🙂
You are a gift that keeps on giving.

Let’s calm down a bit 🤣🤣🤣
This tutorial is awesome I learnt a lot of useful things while laughing my ass off
Love the soothing commercial in the beginning
Awsome tut broo!!
This video made me bought abelton the next day.
How much was it?
_Let's take another waveform and run it through Richard_
First video of yours I’ve watched, your channel was recommended in a random Ableton article, I was in two minds about checking you out as it’s super early and I want to go back to bed. Anyway, I did, and I’m glad! So fucking funny and super educational! Great fucking effort man, I’ve liked and subscribed, I’ll be checking all your vids out now. Keep up the good work dude, have a good day!
this is the type of tutorial video i needed
the language in this :O
what's the difference between Operator and Wavetable?
wavetables sample minute instances of a waveform(any sound of thy choice) and with fm, you have continual control of how a carrier manipulates an output. ( ps: in serum and such, a wavetable can be manipulated by a wave or waveform/tableof thy choices via fm too)
Sorry for much basic info. Both are are kick ass to surprise thy selfy.... Duckface.click
Nw lemmewatch video.mpg
XD
XD
Think of a wavetable as a wav or mp3 file. If you fast foward or rewind you will hear different parts of the song. Just as if you sweep through the wavetable you will hear different sounds. an operator is a static wave that can't be swept through but can be modulated tonally by other waveforms.
you've done it, you've found the best explanation of FM synthesis! 💪⚡
incredible tutorial, more of this please
Awesome video and u got a funny phallus. Those same things can be done within Serum tho 😊
Yo he called the EQ phallus Richard.
I'm done. 😂😂😂
I’m glad that my first ever video from you is about Richard 😃
This is my favorite tutorial of all time.
