@@MichaelTurner856 because he probably hasnt watched any other vid from Underbelly so he cant undertsand the vibe. and by clever he probably meant genius but whatever
That's actually a horrible way to mix your kick and bass. All you had to do was tune your kick and bass together and side chain you lost a great deal of power from the Kick by cutting it the way you did. Another thing you could have done was cut most of the low end from the bass and add a separate sub bass and do what I said previously. You'll get that nice deep rumble effect to really shake the building up.
What he's trying to drive home is that the VERY first part of your signal chain, the very first tool you should be employing in mixing is your choice of samples/instruments. He also should have tried to get people to realize, if shits clashing that means you suck at A: sound design B: selection of samples C: song writing and arrangement, but more than likely, all of the above. If your mentality is to side chain every thing and eq everything, then i'm sorry you're not going to get very good at production, because you're not going to get very good at song writing/arranging.
If you do that you get that ducking effect from sidechaining, that is not always wanted, especially in non EDM tracks. This is just another form of mix Kick & Bass.
In my 10 years history on youtube, this is the first channel I am hitting that like button before watching the video.Because I know I'm going to like it...Ok so check it!:)
Can you pitch up the 1st kick to a 3rd or 5th of the bass note? And then do the EQ? And, is sidechaine comp basically a more intense version of this? It never dawned on me to clean the kicks sub! Much appreciated! :D
Following along with you video, i intially cut the low freqs from the kick but it didn't sound right. So i swapped it, took the filter off the kick and filtered the freqs in question from the bass line and it sounded much better to me. Now im a rookie so i have to ask, is the way i did not a good idea?
Great vid! Thanks, hilarious psycho producer. So how do you choose which one to cut the sub from - is it for technical reasons or aesthetic ones? E.g. would you EQ the sub to let the bass through because the bass has strong melody and character (aesthetic reason)?
yes! In fact I did a video on it. Definitely a valid technique when it comes to making room for the kick, however it can sometimes feel like a bandaid over a underlying mixing issue.
You Suck at Producing ok thanks mate. Sorry only watched a few of your videos yet. So it is common to use both techniques or It just depends on the samples and so on the hertz used?
No, you still need to eq. Sidechain doesn't remove frequencies it make one instrument quiter when other plays at the same time (i.e. kick and bass), you can make that unnoticable or have that "pumping" effect from dance music
hey underbelly, I watched this video, your side chain compression video, and your warmth video but my bass/kick combo just isn't swaggy enough. Should I sign up for private lessons or is there a simpler solution?

Should the bassline still be side chained to the kick or does this technique eliminate the need to side chain the bassline to the kick?
Wow, I can’t believe allows for this smut filthy language.

Great vid! Thanks, hilarious psycho producer. So how do you choose which one to cut the sub from - is it for technical reasons or aesthetic ones? E.g. would you EQ the sub to let the bass through because the bass has strong melody and character (aesthetic reason)?
aesthetic reason. All about the dynamic between the kick and the bass and which you think plays a stronger role in the track.
Cheers!
Ever heard of sidechain?
yes! In fact I did a video on it. Definitely a valid technique when it comes to making room for the kick, however it can sometimes feel like a bandaid over a underlying mixing issue.
You Suck at Producing ok thanks mate. Sorry only watched a few of your videos yet. So it is common to use both techniques or It just depends on the samples and so on the hertz used?
yeah really depends on the case.
Yeah, I'd sidechain + Eq. But it's whatever makes it sound better, so no right or wrong way.
I think a sidechain and a low shelf on the bass should have worked better here
So by rolling off sub frequencies in the kick you don't have to sidechain them?
No, you still need to eq. Sidechain doesn't remove frequencies it make one instrument quiter when other plays at the same time (i.e. kick and bass), you can make that unnoticable or have that "pumping" effect from dance music

a good technique for mixing kick an bass is to use sidechain eq
